Satisfaction with Nougat update - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Looks like today majority of Europe is getting Nougat update on HTC 10.
How is update working for you, regarding bugs and stability? I'm kinda scared of updating it, since the Nougat update ruined my Oneplus 3.

just do it. its great

I actually got my new HTC 10 yesterday, and Nougat today, in the Netherlands.
So far no issues at all.

Does it have any affect on battery life?

for me battery life is a little better on N

I think it's a good improvement, but I have had the occasional issue with screen touch sensitivity, for example, on page scrolling - sometimes if I scroll and hold my finger still, the page flickers up and down, and sometimes it scrolls to the start or end hyperfast. Also when using Swype, it sometimes completely misreads the initial finger movements, inserting more characters than I've passed over . These don't happen often enough to be a problem, but they didn't happen before and make me wonder if the screen sensitivity has been tweaked up a bit in some way.

Have been on N for a good 3 weeks already? Generally, the phone is performing admirably, day to day performance is faster, snappier.
However, with all the improvements being made, there are still some bugs that have yet to be quashed, mainly the in built camera app.
Right now, with the camera in Pro mode, whenever I am adjusting more than 1 variable ie; shutter speed & iso, the tap to focus refuse vehemently to work.. Also, live preview for shutter speed never goes past 3-5 seconds. In the past, when I max out the shutter speed (@16 secs) I will most definitely get a blown out image, for now, 5 seconds onwards doesnt seem to make any difference, until you actually take a shot... As a frequent user of the phone's awesome camera to take low lit shots, this is rather disastrous.
My phone is a Taiwan set, so I dunno if these issues are exclusive. Do chime in if you encounter similar problems with the camera app too!
PS: am using another photography app that does manual and RAW (manual camera) works pretty sweet!

exactly. that page flickers up and down. Scrolling in Stock rom is not as smooth as it is in LOS rom. This issue alone makes me sad every time I use my phone. HTC why you do this. No idea if it is good in MM rom. After seeing your post.. I would downgrade to 6.0 just to see how it works.

It's good, definitely more efficient but you'll not have xposed and from what I've read the likelihood is Slim that well get it, I think it's because the base has changed so much and continues to change meaning it has to be modified greatly, this is the only thing I miss. Certain devs also haven't updated their apps. For example Kodi wasn't updated, might be now but wasn't a little while ago.
Personally I think the trade off for performance and stability is worth it.. I wouldn't go back. Plus with the pixel launcher and a decent theme the phone really flies.

So far so good
No problems here, updated on Tuesday.

[Q] What kind of lag/issues, if any, have you been experiencing?

As this is my first Windows Phone and I wasn't really sure what to expect when it came to fluidity, I was pleased with how smooth everything is. However I've begun noticing a decent (read: annoying) bit of lag when I open up the messaging app and begin typing. The letters take a second to appear and autocorrect is slow if it comes up at all. The lag only last maybe 3-5 seconds but annoying none the less. I've also had some rather bad experience with laggy apps, with Skype being the worst culprit. I read good things about the recent refresh, but it's pretty much unusable for me. I've also been having issues with losing LTE and having it drop down to "4G". A simple toggle of airplane mode fixes it, but it's gone from happening rarely to happening once or twice a day now. When I do have LTE though, I have 4-5 bars constantly.
Anywho, bit of a wall of text but I just wanted to see if anyone else is having similar issues and if it's worth going to AT&T and seeing if they'll replace the phone for me as I'm still within my 30 day return window.
EDIT- Just remembered 2 more issues. Had it reboot on my when adjusting the volume and there's a weird clicking noise that happens when I swipe from the first picture in the camera roll. The phone is on silent, and it only happens going from the first to second picture. Little odd but not a big deal.

The only problem i have seen is:
When i switch off my phone and turn it on sometimes it freezes and i have to turn it of an on 2 or 3 times in order to get it working. this has been happening recently i dono whthere it is to do with some apps or firmware issue.
sometimes the touch screen also give hiccups specially on facebook app.
No other problem. coming from samsung galaxy s 2, i only miss the ability to change my homescreen every week with a different launcher and layout. The apps that i miss are Tweetdeck, 100% working Pulse, Youtube and Facebook App.
My Lumia 900 playing Angry birds is so much faster and smoother compared to SGS2.
Overall i am happy with the looks and performance of my phone.
I get that messaging problem as well sometimes where the keyboard lags and the typing noise doesn't keep pace with my inputs.
Mildly annoying and it's not constant so no big deal for me.
Sometimes, multitasking stops working and I have to do a quick power-off.
Actually, all issues are resolved with a quick reboot as opposed to a reset with my Lumia 900 which is something I can't say about my HD7.
I agree with above. The only lag I get is the occasional facebook load time lag. Some apps take longer to load than others, it's perfectly reasonable. As for overall lag, I had one experience yesterday where everything just slowed to a standstill. It was the first time I had to restart the phone, but after that, I've seen no problems. I can imagine it was a corrupt app as I had been downloading quite a bit of them that day. Coming from android for 2 years, the experience here is much much smoother. My advice, as i learned from the past 2 years, is to retrace your steps and find out when exactly it started to lag. When you find the beginning see if you downloaded any poorly rated or laggy third party app, or if you changed a seeting on your phone. If it continues to lag for no reason, you might just have a bad device. Best of luck.

I just upgraded from a Samsung Focus. My very first reaction was that the screen was slightly less responsive than the Focus, which was buttery smooth and instantaneous. It felt slightly, but noticeably less responsive. After using it for a day, I don't notice it anymore. I am sure it is there, but my memory of the Focus is not as near. As far as true lag goes, I have not experienced any after 2 weeks use, and no reboots or freezes.

I'm glad you are enjoying it but I came from the original focus myself and had the exact opposite reaction. That it was much faster and smoother than my old focus... I still have it and my kids play the old games on it so I can compare regularly and still feel the same.
Does anybody have lag when they are pinching and zooming on heavy desktops websites? i am getting a lot of lag here where my htc titan did not get that lag.
The only issue I seem to be having is when playing any kind of music or watching videos. If I touch any of the capacitive buttons, it's as if I long press them. Not a huge deal since I usually only touch the back arrow anyway, but that's all I get.
i was wondering if anyone else had this problem. My lumia has consistently not displayed maps in nokia maps or the maps app. It will show my location on a blank black or patterned screen (depending on the app). It's not a wifi or data issue because it's happened on both. It's happened five times in 3 days. Each time i've had to shut the phone off and restart it and it works again. Is this just a problem with mine? Thanks.e

Pixel 2 XL - Touch sensitivity issues?

Hi there,
So I finally got my beautiful panda Pixel 2 XL and I absolutely love it, except for one thing - touch latency or sensitivity.
UPDATE
If you're having similar issues, be sure to "+1" the following thread on Google forum and also comment: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/phone-by-google/3XDqX3LgpvQ;context-place=topicsearchin/phone-by-google/category$3Agoogle-pixel-2%7Csort:relevance%7Cspell:false
I took off the glass screen protector and I'm now using it naked. I feel some improvement BUT this is still far from perfect. I was expecting such phone coming straight from Google to blow me away in terms of touch latency and such, but for now it feels like my Oneplus 3 is actually more responsive. Super strange.
I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but basically I feel like I'm having a hard time registering a touch on the first try TOO OFTEN. Sometimes I would even try to scroll up or down a web page and it wouldn't register for a few tries.
Things to note I'm NOT using the screen naked, I'm rocking an AmFilm tempered glass screen protector, it's a dot matrix kind of screen protector, one that doesn't actually stick to the screen entirely, only at the edges. Could this be the issue?
Is anyone else having similar issues with or without a screen protector?
Again, other than that, the device is perfect. Also very minimal blue shift that doesn't bother me at all.
Thanks for your help
How is the sensitivity with the screen protector off?

I know it's silly, but I don't want to take off the screen protector because I got it aligned perfectly and the only replacement I have is a different type - a tpu film.
The thing is, I didn't even have a chance to try out the phone without a protector since this was the first thing I did when I unboxed it :/
Was mainly wondering if anyone else is having touch screen issues with a tempered glass screen protector of any kind?

You on latest 8.1?
I notice some touch sensitivity issues in the far edges of the screen. I'm not using any screen protection at the moment.

Yep, I'm on the stable 8.1 all stock not rooted or anything.
This is mostly apparent when scrolling, I would sometimes scroll down and the page would move downward and sideways altogether, as if it is registered as a swipe to the side with a scroll down. Same when scrolling up. Very annoying.

Yeah, definitely. I'm already on 0.5 scale unfortunately so this can't be it. Thanks for your help anyways! Appreciate it
Same problem after the 8.1 update answering a call is so hard. even unlocking my phone with a swipe up is very difficult. Swiping away notification takes 3 tries. I'm actually regretting the 128gb with google protect! So much money with so many problems. I came from a GS7 edge and it was way better performance wise then this phone. Feels like I'm just a beta tester for google. Seems like every update fixes one thing and breaks 4 more.

Agreed. I actually miss my Oneplus 3 in terms of performance and fluidity. I can't type or browse with this phone without having weird glitches. Sometimes the tap wouldn't register, sometimes it's the scrolling acting up.. Very annoying as I said
I'm having similar issues. Randomly my phone decides I touched somewhere in the middle of the screen I didn't at all, or when scrolling down a list eg. YouTube or Twitter, it suddenly jumps me back to the top as if I swiped down at super human speed.
More over the most consistent issues I'm having is tapping on the edge. Eg. The elipsis (3 vertical dots) when looking at 'my channel' or a playlist such as my attached screenshot. I cannot touch the elipsis at all even with a stylist.
My device is Google Pixel 2 XL, 8.1.0, build OPM 1.171019.011
P.S I'm using the phone 'naked', no case, no screen protector.
Damn. Looks like we've got an actual issue here.
For me it is most consistent when I'm scrolling up or down a list that can also go sideways, like Instagram Stories stickers for example, or an email on Gmail where you can swipe left to get to the next message. It will randomly go right/left when I'm actually swiping up/down.
It also happens to me, sometimes, while scrolling up or down, 5 or 6 times successively, it doesn't recognizes one of the touches.

Nimrodiny, would you mind trying to go on the YouTube app, and either on your 'my channel' list or a playlist try to tap on the ellipse?
It's completely impossible for me, every time either nothing happens or it decides I touched the video itself to play it. I'd like to know if my issue is not unique.
Addendum: I tried viewing this page in desktop view mode in Chrome and zoomed in. I was able to scroll up and down over and over without any side scrolling happening at least.
I have noticed sometimes it freezes when loadng a web page thought it was chrome but updated to the beta.
Same effect, something is off with the touch sensitivity but not always.

Yep. I can definitely tap on the ellipse on YouTube via my channel.
BTW, just made a scrolling comparison - same website, same browser, on my Pixel 2 XL vs the OP3 and... The OP3 absolutely killed it. It was way smoother and never stuttered while the Pixel had tons of stutters and misreading of my swipes
Thanks for testing Nimrodiny. In that case I best go back to the store and exchange my phone, as edge tapping is definitely broken for me.
Ya. Happens to me.. not acurate touch.. try touching that 3 dots on YouTube app on full screen ( where u change resolution of youtube play back)
Ufff fed up with this.. display, speaker, touch.. how many more
I came from OnePlus 3 n got panda pixel 2 xl. I faced some touch sensitive issue while typing n sometimes browsing. M using my pixel with iq shield screen protector film. I did a factory reset it did helped with swipe issues to some extent. Also I disabled vibration n sound for touch and feel bit better while typing. Mostly while typing I had hard time pressing space bar , most of the time I had to press twice to register a space. lts like phone is unable to keep up with my typing speed(m not that fast though). It doesn't feel like using a flagship phone . I would say touch is good but definitely not great.
Other than that I face no display issues like screen burn in or weird sound issues . Ya blue tint is there but it's part of the display not an issue.
I would suggest try factory reset once n disable sound and vibration on touch and see if it does help some how.

POLL: How is Oreo working for you now that it's released?

Just curious to see how people are finding the new Oreo for the S7/S7 edge. For me, it's great. Definitely I do see an improvement in performance. Sluggishness is definitely reduced from what I was experiencing in Nougat. Battery life appears to be the same, if not a bit better, but it's hard to tell.
Only issue I've seen is some apps I have are not Oreo ready (such as the previous Power Amp beta, but there is an Alpha out right now that works but is very incomplete in things such as Playlists).
I have noticed that some apps no longer give notifications at all (mainly games with in-app notifications). Not sure if it's because they're not up-to-snuff with Oreo, but the important apps (such as Messenger+) do work just fine in regards to notifications.
Overall, I'm very pleased with this release which in all honesty will probably be the last upgrade for this phone. I still love my S7 and hope it lasts a long time for me.
This update is fantastic as far as I'm concerned. My phone seems to be more responsive and doesn't lag as much as it did on Nougat. Battery life has been better since the update. Somehow my fingerprint scan to unlock is 1,000 times better. Was always having issue with it before this update. I am also getting slightly better reception. I get slightly better reception in my office area where I previously had little to no reception. I like how some of the items in the pull down notification shade are compacted like your Wi-Fi connection, so they don't take up as much room. Feels like I have a new phone, and I also hope this last major update we will get will help my S7 last for a long time.
I agree, much snappier. I not having to keep putting down apps and restarting to keep it that way either. It makes my s7 a keeper for another year at least. None of the new features really apply to the way I use my device, so no difference there for me.

Adaptive icons suck. Had to download an icon pack to return all of the Google apps to "normal". Bright white circles in my dark theme....
Other than that, I'll have to mess around more before I see if there's been much change. Haven't really noticed more responsiveness.
one word. HORRIBLE! Battery life has literally been cut by 40-60% with the exact same use as before even with power saver on, weird lag issues when I'm trying to multitask, incoming calls wont take precedence over whatever else is currently on screen, screen wont light up on incoming calls when idle, VZW caller id no longer works on unknown calls, fingerprint unlock no longer works just keeps saying "wipe home key and try again", while talking on the phone if the other person gets another call i now hear it ringing on my side and this is just after 2 days...... worst update ever to what was a flawlessly performing device. Wondering if I need to do a factory reset and start fresh

A factory reset would be a good place to start, especially after a major update.
I did the full reset with the Odin package and it is very smooth with better battery life, even with battery saver off.

it took 5 tries but I was finally able to get it to wipe/reset, kept giving me a "system update failed, no recovery package found" error. Resetting it seems to have cured the battery, heat and lag issues and is running smoothly again, only issue I still have is a slight delay in waking the phone on incoming calls but I can live with that

Glad it's working now. Were you rooted and/or modified any of the default system apps? That can cause issues as well. I haven't rooted the S7 ever since I first got it over 1.5 years ago because I never had the need to. It's always been pretty good and stable except Nougat. It started out fine, but as time went on it got progressively worse. I didn't have to do a factory reset and so far, Oreo has been a dream come true.
People's mileage will vary depending on their use and any mods they may have done to their phones. Also, remember that not all apps are written to Oreo specs. Whenever there is a major upgrade, certain APIs and other programming techniques that might have worked (or been allowed to happen) under older versions of Android may now be no longer allowed. That can result in apps misbehaving under Oreo and thereby causing the symptoms you see (battery drain, sluggishness, etc). That's why it's always best to see if any apps you have installed have been updated to work correctly with Oreo.
Another option would have been to uninstall apps one by one to see if things improved after they were removed. At that point, you have found your culprit.
I usually do an update of all apps before doing an upgrade because a lot of devs will push out updates to make their apps conform to the next Android version's standards. That has usually allowed me to avoid any issues. Problem is, not all apps are kept up-to-date because the developer has moved on to other things, etc. But, if any apps that haven't been updated in a long time are still on after I upgrade, I usually would remove those first and that usually cured my ills. But, it is rare that I have the problem because I usually don't keep old, stale apps around. I'm a stickler for that for some reason.
In any case, glad you got it working!

I had no problem at all updating. Went real smooth. My battery has better life and the heat/battery/lag/slow boot are so much betterer. The only things I miss is dolby and viper for sound quality being non rooted. I listen to a lot of music and now have to use an old rooted S5 for my music. Thank you for the release. I've only had it installed for a day and if I notice any issues I will post

Awful, but to be fair, the phone has been horrible for several months now. Did the update to Oreo first, but phone was slow. Decided to do a factory data reset and start fresh with Oreo. It was a little bit better, but not great. Then I installed the g930vvrs4crg2 update and it got worse. Last try before smashing this phone is to Odin back to fresh Oreo, then install the latest update. Hopefully that helps.

The Verizon firmware is awful. Flashing the unlocked firmware (930U) is miles better. Very little bloat (most can be disabled or uninstalled)

No major issues for me thankfully. Only minor ones I've experienced is that the "1" and "0" keys on the keyboard have a small delay before they appear. I'm guessing edge detection is a little aggressive to make sure I wanted to tap those keys?
And taking video sometimes has this weird wobble effect in the video with occasional brightness flickering on walls for instance.
Other than this, everything is great. It will be fixed in software updates. I still haven't downloaded the latest one which said it improved video so maybe this is already solved.
I have not had any problems. Not sure if matters but I always set the phone from scratch, no copy apps or backups. The most I do is export settings and import setting for some apps.
For me, it has proven to avoid a lot of "weird" things...
Not sure if this is the same issue OP is having but I've noticed since day 1 that there is a noticeable delay when pressing or long pressing the keys on the edge of the keyboard. For example, there's about a split second to full second delay when pressing the backspace key. So that means, I have to wait for that delay and then wait again for the original delay if I want to delete whole words at once. It is super frustrating.
I did some testing to see if maybe it's because I'm using gestures and the delay may be caused by the phone detecting the edge touch and waiting for a swipe inward to go back, but that's not the case as it happens with the button navigations too.
Looks like my issue is known and has been around for a while, even though it was not present in my OP7 Pro as of last week when I switch to the 9 Pro.

I've been using SwiftKey and haven't had any issues at all. It's the opposite actually, typing feels very fast and smooth, keyboard always appears instantly and the haptics when typing are very satisfying. Hope it gets fixed for you guys.

Glad to know it doesn't seem to be a universal thing, thanks for letting us know. I'm hesitant to restore to factory settings due to the time it'll take to get everything set up again, but I may have to bite the bullet soon.

I've never once encountered the problem you're referring to.
I Use gboard beta (this is better anyway because it has all the cutting edge sh1t), and turn off all system animations.
Problem fixed. You're welcome.
Update: This problem seems to have went away after the latest update

Sadly I can't update just yet as the install fails, likely due to me flashing the EU boot image on my global variant. When I update I hope my issue is fixed. I also just realized that my issue is a tad bit different than OP's. I decided to make a short video for you all to see, link at the bottom.
I started typing in the center of the keyboard so you can see how quick and responsive it is. Then I go to the edges and you'll see there's like a full second delay until the phone picks up the touch for the key. For the scrolling, I tested along the entire edge and it was the same which leads me to believe my issue is not a keyboard typing issue, but a full screen edge touch delay detection issue. You'll see that when I start the scrolling in the center of the screen, it's quick and smooth. When starting the scroll from the edge of the screen, it initially jumps before scrolling smoothly.
I swear it almost feels like the phone detects the touch on the edge but does not register it right away and instead waits a second to see if I will then slide in from the edge to go back since I'm using gestures. But I tried using the button navigation instead of gesture and the delay is still there so idk at this point. I can confirm that this issue never happened on the OP7 Pro that I'm coming from.

Same here. The 1 and 0 keys have a delay. I assume this has to do with edge touch rejection and it's be nice to have some settings to change this behavior, like Samsung has done (if that is the issue). Could be gestures as well with the OS wondering if you'll do a gesture, but it should not be this much of a delay. It is annoying for sure.

I'm pretty sure it's due to the gestures. I just tested it on my regular 9, same problem, it takes a fraction of a second to realize I'm scrolling and not trying to do a gesture if I'm at the edge of the screen. Does it happen with button navigation?

Question What the hell is wrong with this phone, Random stuttering and fps drop

The software in 6 pro is buggy as hell, Now I'm getting random refresh rate drop in everything, Gmail, Play store google now all apps, Just whenever it feels like it.
Nothings changed app wise but now randomly when I wake the phone or just scrolling around it's stuttering like it's at 30hz not 60hz, Even with forced 120hz in dev settings it still does it makes 0 difference.
And do not disturb mode wow do not disturb means do not disturb not waking my screen at every notification while I'm asleep, I've tried custom options here as well nothing works there either, It's either no notifications at all on lock screen or status and no screen wake or everything together.
Honestly this is the worst phone I've had for bugs, I'm on November so they have already done 1 update.

That's the exect same as me!! Exectly! Even on the play store it's defo below 60fps seems to be moving into other apps, and on the YouTube app I'm getting purple lines going through my screen like it's a screen fault

I had to flash proton aosp ROM so I can have a smooth experience, and my god the apps open like lightning, no lags or jitters

I'm seriously getting fed up with it, If this January update doesn't drop before my return window it's going back, The worst Pixel experience I have encountered to date with Android 12 it's still beta imo, Shoddy, So many software issues disgusting from Google to be honest.

I may try that at some point, I mean what's the purpose of having forced highest refresh rate in dev settings when it does jack **** not to mention it shouldn't do this full stop, This is my third 120hz phone and by far the worst in terms of smoothness and refresh rate all over the damn place.

If defo does not run at 120 all the time even forced, something's making it drop, I made a post like yours before, lots of others having the same issue. I'm not sure on what to do, I don't really want to have to run custom ROMs tbh, yeah if Jan's update doesn't fix it then I can't possibly stay with this device

To be clear, it's likely not Android 12 itself that seems like it's still in beta, it's Android 12 on the Tensor CPU. After all, no previous Pixel phones running Android 12 beta would be able to test how it ran on Tensor.
I will say that Google should've done more internal testing of Android 12 on Tensor before the release of the P6P, since they couldn't possibly receive feedback from the public about it.

Try it before your window. Unlock the bootloader, flash stock ProtonAOSP 12.2 and play around. Safetynet passes right out of the box and everything save one or 2 things work. Plus tweaks. Then if you don't like it Android Flash Tool back to stock and send 'er home. Stock Android 12 on this device is simply awful all the way around.
Easily the worst performance on a 120hz phone I've used this year. Google for whatever reason seem to be really struggling getting this thing to work as it should. I really don't want to root because I just haven't got the time anymore to be doing all that stuff and I really shouldn't have to but in its current state the phone is so disappointing.

I'm on Dec update and the jitter and smoothness has improved but it's still not like other flagships around today. I'm praying the Jan update fixes a lot of it.
After a while of using proton it still has a little bit of jitterness about it, not sure what's causing it

Yeah I agree it could be Android 12 itself but then Google should have tested more and not releasing just for the sake of it, I mean look at OP they had to pull the 12 update, I am getting constant refresh rate drops now when I unlock my phone and start scrolling in apps even after restarting the phone it is ok until I lock the screen and then unlock and bang 30hz it looks like, Terrible just terrible.

I may do cheers but as one other posted it is still jittering in proton but I am not sure whether that is the same refresh rate drop, I cannot believe this wasn't picked up in testing it is basically rendering my phone useless at scrolling because of the massive refresh drop at the min, I wouldn't mind it was all good for a couple of days and I haven't changed anything just started doing it on it's own as many others have reported.
Simple they released the phone with rushed out Android 12

It is definitely curious why so many folks are having so many problems and then there are those like me who don't have any issues. Maybe it was a quality control issue where not all components were closely enough alike.
Internal testing lmao. No way Google did. They had to of had prototypes of these phones, no? Preorder day was a disaster and next year it will be exactly the same. It's been a trainwreck from the start for many of us but not all with this phone. Imagine the average user, not an xda user, who have so many issues. Think they'll buy another Google phone? Nope
Those having refresh rate problems better make sure it's not a installed app. I used an app called Kinscreen and it forced 60hz. I read others here saying they had the same issue with other apps.
It's definitely not component parts because I just flashed the updated November update from Google web installer and it's smooth again, btw the November firmware has all the December fixes as I haven't come across any of the old November bugs, some little we jitters here and there but no where near as bad as I had on the December build, revert back to November and then wait on Jan build

I don't think that's conclusive that it isn't (or is) component parts. All it confirms is we don't know what the root cause of the difference in experience is. I never had any problems on October, November, or my current December update.
I've had random drops in frames when scrolling web pages on chrome and other areas of the phone, and you can easily see how it'll jitter a bit. Idk what causes it but I don't think I've seen it recently.
One bug that drives me nuts, is if I go into the messages app and open a conversation, the keyboard will not be on screen but the app thinks it is, so I'll have this giant open space where the keyboard is supposed to be. I have to swipe right to "lower the keyboard" then tap inside the text box to bring it up again.
I'll be installing proton tonight and see if I notice a difference with anything, as I'm always thankful for custom roms that do a better job than stock.
