[Unlocking Verizon Bootloader] Can I still do this?? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I just got my Pixel XL and it's already updated to Android 7.1.1 so does this mean I cannot unlock the bootloader anymore? I read somewhere that once you have done the update you can no longer unlock the bootloader and it doesn't matter if I revert back to 7.1 or 7.0 once the updates done it's been patched.. I didn't read that here it was on another android website i was just browsing around and decided I'd come here and ask and see if I can get a definitive answer.

If you are on 7.1.1 you are SOL for unlocking/rooting.

If you want to unlock your boot loader and your on 7.1.1 you might want to take back your VZ sourced Pixel and get one direct from Google. I'm not saying it can't be unlocked, I just don't think there is enough of an audience to make it worth a Developer's time.

My 7.1.1 pixel is unlocked bootloader.

Yes but you unlocked prior to 7.1.1 or bought directly from Google. If your phone comes from VZ with 7.1.1 you can't unlock it as far as I know.

It's cool I will just either wait for a new exploit to be found or something or just forever be stuck with a locked bootloader it's so dumb too ALLL i wanted to do was change the default system emojis but can't even do that w/o root.. it really makes me wonder why they lock all the customization behind root access or the developers @ Android are hella stupid.. should be able to make changes to icons, UI in general and anything else that doesn't directly affect the phone..
I understand Verizon doesn't want people modding their phones and possibly doing something malicious on or to their network or having to deal with someone calling about how their phone doesn't work correctly when they arn't even using the same version of Android as the phone is suppose to have or what ever other reasons they have for not wanting people to be able to flash their phones etc.. but you'd think being able to change default system emojis or something else super basic/simple like why?? why can't they just allow for total customization and it'd fix a lot of these problems of people wanting to root their devices..

So, I just got off the phone with Google and they are sending me RMA label so I can ship them my Verizon Pixel and they'll send me a Pixel directly from Google.. Unfortunately it'll be refurbished though.. But as long as it comes directly from Google it doesn't matter which Android version... I can still unlock right?

Yes, if you buy from Google the phone can be unlocked no matter what version of Android it comes with.

Thanks.. Although it sucks I have to give up my brand new for a refurbished device.

Got a 7.1.1 directly from verizon. Man this sucks. I get my phones through work and I want to use titanium backup on it for all my work-related program data. Necessary and impossible at the same time.

I got mine a week ago and still had 7.1 . There's hope!

So you were able to just boot with no sim, skip the wifi, enable usb debugging, and then follow the steps at http://theroot.ninja/depixel8.html? I'm crossing my fingers, I've been stuck with an LG G4 for about two years and it's been killing me not having bootloader access

Why didn't you buy a Google edition in the first place? Why do you think they will send you a new device? Nice has nothing to do with this.

Well unless he calls and says the truth. That he wants to unlock the bootloader and can't with Verizon. Somehow I think they will get a good laugh out of that one. But I've heard much crazier things.

I bought it through Verizon to trade in my phone. I was under the impression that I could unlock the bootloader, provided my phone came with 7.1.0. However it took them like two and a half months to ship, so it came with 7.1.1

Disappointed : /

Hi,
Just bought my Galaxy Nexus today, i'm coming from a Xperia Arc, best phone i ever had, but outdated specs for nowadays (except for the camera).
Just 15 minutes using the phone i noticed the gray bands on the screen. First i thought it was a problem with my device and i even called the shop to ask for a replacement, but searching later i saw it was a general problem, related to the S amoled screen. I was shocked, how a flagship and expensive phone could have so primary problem ?
Anyway, i already sold my Arc, so i started to look for workarounds ; if the problem is only in gray colors, i will try to avoid. Unfortunately, ICS plague G. Nexus owners with ALL google apps with the infamous gray background, so now everytime i open any google app, i remember my device has a faulty screen.
So i searched in settings to change the background color to a dark theme ; in my Arc with Android 2.3.3 this was simple. Again i've been frustrated : no option to change it and searching in this forum now i know that simply change google app's background needs to root, unlock bootloader and flash a new rom ; i've done this before in other devices but i know it's not an easy task , often leading to problems.
So far, i'm VERY disappointed. If i could go back in time, i would sticky with my Arc until another really good option shows up. I live in Brazil and flagships phones take a long time to be available here and are VERY expensive.
Anyway, SHAME on you google and Samsung. Being a Android fan since i left my N97, i'm really disappointed now.

try screen adjuster from pstore or install a custom rom/kernel and use the color control
you own a google phone, you can do anything with it
adb backup - backup your data, if you care about it (unlock erases everything)
fastboot unlock
fastboot boot path-to-insecure-boot.img
fastboot flash recovery path-to-clockworkmod.img
adb restore - if you did backup anything
There. Or use the GNex toolkit, does all of this for you expect backup.
@thefunkyjoint. Do what the guys are telling you and root the phone. Run aokp , liquid ics , gummy or any of the popular custom roms. Your opinion of this phone will change a lot. Plain and simple the phone becomes flawless .

Yeah Bro the Xperia arc was a piece of crap the specs were outdated when it came out. I had it for 3 weeks and then I sold it for the sgs2. Actually the only good thing the Xperia arc had was a good camera that I'll admit. I have no idea what gray lines you're talking about but there is a colour control function in franco kernel, combine it with AOKP and you got a lean mean android machine.

Off topic, but I found this kind of funny. On my Eris I downloaded an app from the market and was rooted in one click. On my nexus I had to hook it up to my computer, install a ton of software, spend a bunch of time searching the Internet for the steps people left out, edit some configuration files, and wipe the phone.
Easy, maybe for the devs, but for your average user, no.

Translation:
On my Eris, someone held my hand and packaged an exploit for me.
On my Nexus I had to learn how to do it the right way.
Side note: For those of us who took the time to learn the right way all along, rooting this took as much time as it did for you to download an apk on your Eris.

Install PdaNet for drivers
Run a batch file to unlock bootloader (I concede you have to do a backup if you decided to root way after getting the phone, otherwise you can just accept it since market will auto redownload all your apps and your contacts are stored in the cloud anyway). There's countless sites describing how to unlock your g-nex, which if you look at the command(s), is very simple to understand even if you are technologically retarded...
Double click the batch file in Paul's superboot package
I managed to do this when I didn't really have a clue about my phone or Android. I'm sure anyone who can find their way here has the mental capacity to root their phone without a hitch.
And if by "your average user" you mean the people that don't understand that their phone runs Android -- well, they're not going to root their phone anyway so it doesn't matter.

Who's getting one and why?

Hey Guys and Gals
So, we all know what the Oppo N3's main feature is, the motorized swivel camera! The high quality optics involved should give great quality snaps, plus with the swivel feature, selfies will never look so good (results may vary with operator:laugh So will this rather niche feature attract anybody? Or is the fear of the mechanism failing more of a concern?
Who's going to be picking up the Oppo N3, and why?

Very much interested and think available through Oppomart
As someone who has gone back and forth between android and iPhones over the years, although the iPhone 6 Plus has become my go-to phone since its release, I want to pack an Android phone as well as I still miss the sharing between apps that works so much better on Android despite Apple's attempts to catch up. That being said, there is no doubt after having an HTC One and Moto Droid Maxx, that the iPhone 6 Plus still has a better camera than most. That's why this Oppo intrigues me...a chance for a solidly built phone with what SOUNDS like a great or at least intriguing camera. Other intriguing features for me are that it has the option to have two SIM cards (or one SIM and an SD Card if willing to give up the nanoSIM slot) and the rapid charge to 75% in 30 minutes. My hold off is knowing whether it will work on Verizon in the US...it LOOKS like it has the right bands for that but I've noticed other world unlocked phones that can't do both voice and data.
So, my decision is down to this Oppo N3 or seeing if the Nexus 6 in 64Gb ever appears again in the Google Play store for the pure Google experience...though not sure how key that is given that we can custom ROM almost any phone.
Anyone else thinking of the Oppo N3?
Got one in China. Camera is pretty good at the first glance. 2 SIM-Cards. ColorOS working pretty fast and smooth. But no Google Apps in Chinese verison, and only Chinese and English languages. Many preinstalled apps chinese only. Good grip. Speakers are loud enough. 39k+ points in AnTuTu.
But can Google Play services be installed?
Are you able to install Google Play services and then install all your Google apps? Or is Color like Amazon's Fire OS and a closed system?

I can install Google Play .apk but it doesn't start. And I can't flash GApps because there is currently no custom recovery for N3. But I don't have much understanding of flashing so maybe I'm doing something wrong. People was able to flash it on N1 with ColorOS, so I am just waiting for international ROM or custom recovery or cyanogen mod to do it.
Thinking that it's a North American version that is shipping now
Perhaps it's a different ROM shipping with this to North America and maybe it's Play Services compatible? You said you bought yours in China? Hoping someone else might know the answer but might need to post in a different thread since this one is just an "are you buying this or not" thread and not a technical one.

It must be Chinese variant only, because they have their own apps market. I just bought it because it was cheap and available.
Sorry, I don't know if this is correct thread to post it, just want to share my photo impressions. I did a comparison between Oppo N3 and LG G2 cameras. Overall I think N3 is a somewhat better camera. Here is one pair of photo in low-light conditions.
LG G2
Oppo N3
Definitely interested in getting this phone as soon as it becomes available to the UK, need something to replace my aging Droid 4. Things that attracted me:
The camera, obviously:
The dual-SIM feature, meaning I can stop using the bloody awful Blackberry Curve that work gave me, a phone so terrible I'd rather have a Nokia dumbphone from the 90s.
Concerns I have:
The comments in this thread about no GApps - though I'm guessing this is for the Chinese version due to local app stores, government censorship etc.
Will they do it in any colours other than white, or do I have to paint it? (I hate white phones)
Will a "selfie phone" attract many developers and get root and decent ROMs
Lollipop upgrade?
Availability of accessories - I really need a keyboard slider case.
And I still hope for an official CyanogenMod release like with N1.
There is a new review http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Oppo-N3-review_id3883 and they have Google Play on their phone.

General rule is if it looks too good to be true, it probably is, though I'm still curious.
Only way this is likely to be real is if it were a secondhand Chinese model that someone doesn't want. That would mean no GApps until the International ROM turns up.
I believe the N3 is easy to root (literally just flash SuperSU.zip with ADB) so you could sideload all your other apps, but not aware of anyone getting GApps to work yet (so no Maps, GMail, Play Store, Calendar etc.)
I still remain doubtful of Oppo and OPO. I had gotten the OPO a few months after its release but the touch screen issues threw me off. I know its unfair to judge Oppo by the same standards, but I doubt they could implement the quality of the Apples, Samsungs, HTCs and LGs of today. But this on Cyanogenmod would def look appealing.

Can someone tell me if I can upgrade by odin?
I'd take that reps word with a very large grain of salt...
They notoriously lie. It reads like they are a not a native English speaker, so I'm going to assume offshore tech support and I doubt that they'd have exact time frames.
I'll be pleasantly surprised if it rolls out then, but I'm not holding my breath.
Well supposedly on the r/galaxynote4 subreddit, someone talked to an ATT rep and they said May 16th.
(Sauce: https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxynote4/comments/4gri24/marshmallow_is_coming_to_att_note4_on/)
Anything between the 8th and 16th would be fantastic.

You'll have to wait until someone can get the files together... Not really sure where/how they do that though...
That somebody better get the files tho #tempted
Yea an Odin flashable MM update for the note 4 would be cool. Shame we still dont have root....
My need for root disappears with Marshmallow... My only concern is being able to sandbox apps from accessing contacts, personal info, etc. This functionality is baked into Marshmallow. Know others want it for other reasons, but for me, at least they are giving me the functionality I need. Used to not be able to back up calls, sms, mms, etc. but that functionality is available too... Used to need to backup apps, but all my apps now backup to the cloud... At least Google is giving us functionality. I read somewhere, they are trying to give people the functionality most root their devices for.
I talked to another rep and she said the MM update already went out on 3/4/16, and that the MM update slides just the Note 4's into an alternate dimension, which is probably why we haven't seen it update yet. LOL
Seriously though I would be interested to see what the MM update actually does with this device... so I guess I'll keep trying to update starting next week... or the next... or the next... or after Obama leaves offfice next year...

I know that works if the update is actually available at that time, but I didn't think that worked if the update hasn't been "officially" released yet. Either way, it would be the first time they released an update on a Sunday (Mothers Day no less) wouldn't it? I don't think it's legit. I've had dozens of reps tell me they aren't informed "until a few days before an update is released usually." I think we'll be without Marshmallow until I upgrade to the Note 6. Then I'll be dying to know when Nougat (whatever Android N is called) is coming. And I'll be disappointed somehow LOL.

Im finding it kinda odd that i have not taken either of the security updates but now that i reenabled the updater it shows no update and that my phone is current.... did at&t pull the security update? Or is it a prelude to mm hitting their server soon?? I have all but given up on root for the at&t variant. So i will gladly move on to the mm update and maybe it will gix some overheating issues with the oculus galaxy vr inovators edition (doubtful) but still worth a try.

Yes i have the innovators edition the first unit to publicly come out and yes it is 1000% worth it the 360 stills are so realistic its like you are there. And the ammount of free video content is awesome. I can also switch it into developers mode and use all the google cardboard apps as well like roller coaster simulators. There are a few games available for it as well my favorite types of those are similar to a roller coaster except you are a pilot of a ship and u use the side touch pannel to shoot in the direction you are looking. There is also a built in vr cinima where it feels and looks like you are setting in a full fledged movie theater here you can watch 3d movies, your personal video files. There is also milk vr by samsung that has a decent content library including a little vr cartoon about a but her and a rabbit. There is a app from oculus home that jas a cool ride thru an insane aasylum called catatonic and it scares the crap outa most people i tried it on one went as far as to rip the b ead gear off and throw it luckily i cought it lol.
But to sum it up. It is awesome. You can literally go any where in the world almost like being there while standing in your living room or setting in a a swivel chair.

Will we see Root or Bootloader unlock?

Will this phone get rooted and or it's Bootloader unlocked? My vote is no considering the lack of success the devs had with the Note 5.

its tough to say, as you mentioned, even the previous iteration of the note isn't rooted on Verizon (did not confirm that, just trusting you know what you're talking about lol) . However i believe the note 4 on Verizon did it root eventually (on retail that is, the dev version had root since day one for it) . Maybe some time in the note 7 being out the note 5 will get a reliable root method. Best thing to do is the hope for the best and expect the worst.
on a side note, when i had my dev edition note 4 it was upsetting due to the lack of Roms variety. I would look at the note 4 T-mobile forums and see it rooted and booming with choices of Roms. does anyone know, lets say in that case, if i had bought an unlocked T-mobile note 4 and activated it on verizon ( or if thats even possible), would i have been able to root and use those roms from the T-mobile forums?
** i dont mean to make little of the work Devs put in on Verizon roms (the ones i knew about before switching to a nexus 6p)

I myself had the dev edition and though there was a lack of Roms I enjoyed the cm rom from hsbadr.. I myself prefer vanilla android over TW but have not found a replacement for the stylus of the spen to use with the nexus 6's

I've always heard that Samsung was doing a lot better with TW in the note 5 , but the lack of SD card and removable battery left me salty. so it was the first time i deviated from the note line and decided to give pure stock a try. It very good but a little too boring for me at times. but the thing i will absolutely miss from the 6p is the fingerprint wake and unlock, it was so nice to be able to unlock and turn on the screen with just one gesture. Though on the flip side.. i've always wanted a phone that could survive water. though as i found out with wear watches, touchscreens dont respond well underwater lol. but in the note 7's case thats where the spen comes in handy.
anyways, im looking forward getting the note 7 in my hands and will be hoping theres a root method available in under 4 months lol.
I tested the note 5 for 14 days before I returned it. I threw on nova launcher and got the stock feel I was looking for I had android pay working which because of root never worked before. It was a solid device but I myself can't wait for next Thursday if it does come a day early.....

I would think that the S7 Edge is a good barometer as to how likely root is for the Note 7. I see that they recently found a semblance of root with the Verizon S7 E, although without an unlocked bootloader. Given how popular the N7 is certain to be, you can bet that there will be very serious efforts devoted to rooting it.

On the s7 edge. Is the user able to run twrp or any other custom recovery and Xposed framework. Im on note 3 rooted but locked bootloader. Hoping to get note 7 and being able to run twrp and xposed framework and other great things.
No unlocked bootloader or TWRP on the Verizon S7E yet, but they are working on it. Xposed apparently can be flashed through Flashfire. I know from experience with a Samsung tablet that Knox presents problems with bootloader unlocks. I am now on the Nexus 6P and new innovative ways are in place now to allow root and Xposed without touching the system, so as to preserve Android Pay. One of the problems with tripping Knox that I see on the VS7E discussions is that it breaks Samsung Pay, so hopefully, work arounds similar to the system-less root on the 6P will be developed.
As time goes on and I get newer phones I lose interest in root capabilities. Honestly there is very little on my Nexus 6 that requires root. Many developers have gone to the trouble to make most of the good apps work without root. I give no cares about custom firmware anymore. It's always an exercise in patience as something is always broken, or you have to maintain the kernel and custom recovery and OS all separately. Make sure not to update your kernel version XXX unless you are on baseband YYY...... it's really exhausting..... I have had cell phones since cell phones existed. My first computer ran 4.7Mhz..... I'm really tired of chasing the next new thing. I've owned every Note except the Note 2 and Note 5 and on those years I had a Galaxy S model. Honestly the stock Samsung experience is good. Also most of the really useful SPen features and other features get broken once you root and rom and custom kernel and recovery and all that.... so, root or not. Whatever.

Root maybe, bootloader doubtful.
Either way if we get a U firmware, like we got with the S7 edge, and adaway, I'll be pretty happy with the device.

Yeah thats what I was wondering also, "expected ship date" does that mean we get it on that day or it ships from factory on that day. Gonna be a long week either way.

You may get it and will lose Samsung Pay once rooted. Sure you want it? The only reason I want it is for non-provisioned tethering off my UDP but even then it'll be hard to sacrifice Samsung Pay. Guess that's why I keep my OG Droid Turbo around

Any way at all to unlock the bootloader of the Verizon Pixel XL?

Is there a way to flash the stock Google firmware and then unlock the bootloader that way?
If not I'll just have to wait until someone makes a depixel 8 for oreo

There is only one way, from now until the end of time, to unlock the bl of a Verizon Pixel. Sell it and buy a Google version.

:'(
However my wife is on Fi so I'll probably buy another from Google and swap with her. :good:
If you managed to get a Pixel with an older security update you would be able to. If you bought it NEW one, most likely it comes with the updated version.
I would suggest taking it back and buying it through the Google website.
