Gmail app getting irritating - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

So Gmail started this thing (not sure when), where it uses a built in browser to handle all links and URL. I assume this is based off chrome, and that's fine if it worked.... BUT IT DONT!
Half the time I get this (see pics) when trying to open a link, and when it does manage to load a page, objects/links all over the page refuse to work. This sucks as I use my Gmail for ALOT of things.
I've tried long holding the links and selecting "open in browser" but I get this stupid built in thing again. Sometimes I can copy the link and open and paste in chrome, but sometime it will just copy the image instead of the link so I end up downloading a picture of the link I want to visit.
I've tried disabling the browser option in Google settings for Google search, but it seems to not affect gmail.
For example today I got an email saying a bill was due, it had a "click here to pay" link. I click on the link, but only get this continuous loading screen. I tried to "open in browser" same thing. So I tried coping URL and pasting in chrome, but only managed to download "xxxx/xx/x/payment.jpg" I wasn't able to actually visit the link hours later when I was near a PC.
So In short my question is.....
How can I disable Gmail's useless built in browser.
Sorry for repeating a bunch of things.

Sadly I don't have this option. Attached is a screenshot of my available options.
** Running the latest image, and all apps are updated. It is not a modifed Gmail app, it's just themed with substratum

have you tried eating cache from Gmail and chrome ?

This is strange. I don't have the option to uncheck, but none of my links open with a built in browser. They all open with full fledged Chrome.

I wonder if this has to do with the default handling of links? As in, under Android Settings, Apps, App Settings, "Browser App".

So I have found out it's a chrome thing, not Gmail. Noticed this when I went to open a link in an app and I got the same window.
I cleared all data from chrome, went to Gmail and tried to open a link, and it presented me with full screen chrome, but after logging back in to chrome and reopening the link in gmail again it gave me that bull crap floating windows thing. It reminds me of paranoid androids halo feature.
Anyways, I can't find anything in chrome regarding this.

Do you use Chrome as your browser, or are you using something else for browsing the web?

OK I think I found what might be causing this issue. Make sure your settings under Developer Settings are the same as mine here:

Chrome is the only browser type application I have installed, and my settings are the exact same as pictured. Sadly I'm still having the problem. I guess I'm going to swap out chrome for another application. Possibly yubrowser or some "Qualcomm optimized browser" to see if it persist.

Is "Android System WebView" frozen in titanium backup for you?

Something interesting. I was browsing this thread and noticed this...
If I scroll down and select the link to download the latest version, I get the windowed thing (see attached pic), but if I select the changelog link or the link to the stable releases, it opens normally.

No it is not. I only use titanium to freeze and defrost my smart watch apps (pebble, martian notifier) so I don't have persistent notifications. Thanks for the help but this is getting irritating.

Correction, it is!
However it's weird because I personally didn't freeze it, and it's not allowing me to defrost it. I can see the option "enable web view" in the play store, but when I select it nothing happens and it remains frozen/disabled.

OK I didn't freeze it either, the system does. That's why I'm asking... if it is NOT frozen, then try freezing it and see what happens.

Check my edit above. Titanium is reporting as frozen, and when I attempt to defrost it, it throws a toast notification saying "app was defrosted" but it remains frozen

OK. You want that to remain frozen. I'm pretty sure you need to change the Developer Options I posted earlier in order to actually defrost it, but it wouldn't help you in this situation anyway. I can find a few other threads of people having a similar issue, but with no fix listed.

Looks like I'm just going to flash a factory image.

Yeah that was one of the websites I came across which is why I was asking if your Chrome app was up to date. It's odd that people are experiencing this and not getting it fixed. The thread just dies... I wonder if anyone has figured this out yet.

Doesn't look like it. Well I'm going to keep this updated with any info i find. I may try rolling back chrome a few versions.

It seems I'm also no longer able to open play store links through the play store either, This stupid browser implementation takes it over without asking a thing. No defualts are set, this is taking away some real functionality from my device.

Just received an update in the play store for chrome, taking it and I'll report back.

I am using Google Chrome 16.0.912.63 beta-m (the latest beta version) on Windows 7. Even after logging off and logging back on, the portal sidebar still asks me to log in to access the widget. I have even tried this in an incognito browser (so that all the cookies are cleared), but it still won't show content after logging in.
At the top right, the Google +1 text isn't a hyperlink, whereas all the other links next to it (FB, twitter, YT) have clickable text. Seems inconsistent.

Yea, same here. it's not even clickable.

I think an improvement would be to remove the featured/popular posts thing. This may be me, but it looks a little too much like engadget now.

Google text still not hyperlinked for me.
Tried logging out, wiping cache and logging back in. Widget still doesn't work. This is in Chrome / W7 x64.
Also tried on IE, which I have never used for xda, so it's a fresh start. Logged in, widget still doesn't work.
On IE9, I also get this gap on the right above the ad:
http://i.imgur.com/LypIE.jpg (a little too big to display here)
Another one (sorry )...
The Twitter, Facebook and Google+ links at the bottom of each post on the main portal page are just images. They're not linked to anything.
And when viewing an individual article, Google+ is missing completely from the bottom of the post.
Chrome 16 / Win7 x64 and verified on IE9.

On the main Portal page, clicking on "xx comments" for any of the articles only takes you to the article itself, and doesn't take you directly to the comments section of the article, as it should.

this WORKS fine for me on the ones i tried, make sure the link has /#comments BROKEN LINKS (top 2 posts) are /#respond
but tweet/+1/fb arent hyperlinked as posted above,
I get the feeling there are some very inconsistant rendering results.
The first time i logged on all i saw was adverts, there maybe the same number but they where much more in your face and apeared larger, it really did look terrible which might explain some of the comments you've had
I then reset my IE9 settings an i now cant comment on any portal posts, just doesnt let me type any more screen is there, all the buttons etc but it wont physically let me type, very odd. but on the plus side the adverts seem to have shrunk a bit. However there are some large gaps, namely below the widget that also doesnt work
There are 5 adverts on the portal, and although they appear larger and more in your face its not as bad as it was the first time i loaded the website and before i reset my browser, which to be fair, i shouldnt need to do. However when you click on the comments button for the article it brings up the list of comments and comments box (which i cant use) but also a couple of adverts right next to each other, that looks terrible, ill see if i can get a pic
oh, you might want to change the first article in the portal, the one with the pic of the new portal, your looking at the new portal, so you see what the pic is showing, except its like picture in picture, which might be a reason some folk think it looks messy, sounds silly, but youd be surprised how our minds work
oh an finally, will the new buttons frame be consistant through XDA, looks better if the buttons stay the same on all pages.

The widget doesn't work here, either.
Also, I clicked on the "Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab Will Probably Get ICS" article at the top of the page but it is taking me to the HTC unlocked bootloaders article.

My tablet will no longer download PDFs through chrome.

Hey guys. Super annoying issue here. When I click on a PDF link, my tablet refuses to download it. Usually, you click on the PDF and it will download and ask which app to open it with. Now, however, it tries to open it in the browser, but fails to do so. It also tries to download it, but fails doing that as well. This functionality still works with Firefox. I have uninstalled adobe reader, adobe flash, and uninstalled chrome updates but still no dice. Anyone know what's going on? I'm non rooted stock. Please help!
Same problem here. Long click and click save link as. O

Chrome isn't selected for any defaults. I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled it. I'm now thinking it's not chrome. When I click on a link for PDF, the web page will redirect to a black screen will pop up quick with an adobe PDF symbol and a status meter bar. The page will then redirect back to the original page and I'll get a notification in the notification pull down that says "error downloading file." Seriously don't want to factory wipe, but this is driving me mad. If I long press the link and save it, it saves it as HTML, not PDF. Wtf!!!

Looks like there is an app assigned as the default app to open your PDFs and is acting up. You got to figure out what app was that.
When I open a PDF from a browser on my 10.1, it asks me whether to open it using Acrobat, Polaris, HP Eprint or any other apps capable of reading PDFs.
You can try identifying what apps you got who can open a PDF and clear their defaults.
So I went through literally every single app on the device looking for defaults. Not one app is set as default. I finally deleted data, cleared cache, uninstalled updates and disabled the app. This finally did it. By disabling the app, it somehow reset it where uninstalling updates did not. This has worked for now, hopefully it sticks...

Chrome always asks about default apps

Hi, I have a stock HTC M8. After the latest chrome update, I always get asked to choose my default app, or links in this case, even though I have chosen "always".
Links launch the default app if they are normal links. But if the link is shortened or a redirect, such as the links launched from tapatalk, chrome has to be launched first to resolve those links and then I get asked about which app to use for the links. This is where I have my problem. Chrome always asks me to choose my default app even if I click on "always".
Any help is appreciated.
Did you try to "clear defaults" for Chrome?

Clear defaults for chrome did not do anything. But I thought let me clear the cache and data. Now it seems fine, it does not ask me for app confirmation everytime I click a link.
Thank you.

Links not opening in Chrome

I just got my Pixel XL yesterday since I've set it up I've had this problem. When I open links, regardless of the app I open them from, they do not open in Chrome or whatever I have set for my default browser. Instead they open a sort of overlay WebView window. To clarify, these are not opening in the apps internal browsers (Like what is available in Twitter or Facebook). I have cleared all the default handlers, changed default browsers, tried from multiple apps, but this continues. I even did a chat with Google support and they claim this is supposed to happen. I have a video below of what I'm talking about. In the video I am clicking a link and instead of Chrome coming up, a window appears on top of Twitter and the link is rendered there.
Does anyone have any idea what would be causing this?

I do not. Chrome is the only installed browser. Every app I have was also on my S7 before I switched and it did not have anything like this going on, even on the Nougat beta. I have never seen anything like this before.
Gotcha, and what app are you using to show the links to begin with? Sorry if I missed it in the OP.
EDIT: It has to be the originating app?

This happens regardless of the originating app. It happens in Gmail, Inbox, Facebook, Twitter, my Reddit client, everywhere that has links that would normally be handled by the default browser.
This is part of nougat.. kind of.
Previously in android apps could use something called web view. Basically it was a built in generic mini browser that the app developer could customize to their liking and make it look however they wanted.
Now with Nougat they are trying to keep everything looking similar so apps can now use the mini browser thing which is part of Google chrome. Sounds like those apps your using might be using the old web view still

This is not a WebView window like I've ever seen. Nor is it a Chrome Custom Tab. I have never seen anything like what my video shows.
I guess I'm just going to have to do a screen share support call with Google and hope they have a solution, even if it is a factory reset.
Have you tried opening your Google app from the app drawer, going into settings > accounts and privacy, and disabling "open web pages in app"?
Ya, this is a confusing one.

I watched your video. Yes that's different from what I get. Looks kinda cool. Looking forward to hearing what Google tells you.
A factory reset did the job. The only explanation I can think of is that for some reason my phone couldn't set a default browser. Anything that had an open to go from internal to external browsers (such as Twitter or Facebook) showed "Open in" instead of "Open in Chrome" even though my system settings showed Chrome as my default. Also, one of my default browsers listed was the Setup Wizard. I am thinking this is shenanigans from doing a USB transfer setup from an S7 on the Nougat beta.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

The good news is you got it straight! :good:
Sorry to necro, but I have this problem now and I'm really not trying to factory reset after all the work I've done making this phone mine. Are there any developments on this? The WebView thing doesn't support YouTube which is killing me the most. A Google product that doesn't support YouTube...madness....
If anyone else finds this, disabling the Setup Wizard app resolves the issue. That app just tries to open all links rather than letting the default browser do the job.
I went through this exact situation, and couldn't figure it out. Here is a link to the thread i had started going through the entire process, its about 3 pages. It started with gmail, then got widespread. My end result was a reset also.

Google Inbox opens links in Custom Tabs

Hey everyone,
I had to factory reset my Nexus 5X and before that Google Inbox used to open external links directly in Chrome, but now only in Custom Tabs (I know I can then open it in Chrome but I find that tedious). I just can't find a switch to change that, can somebody help me with that?

Interesting. I don't see that happening for me nor do I see a setting for that. You're definitely opening Inbox and now Gmail right? I don't even know if Gmail has that option as I've disabled the app.

Yes, I'm definitely talking about Inbox. I just now realized that this problem also applies to other Apps like Gmail or Facebook, all apps opening external links in Custom Tabs, so apparently it's a system-wide problem. I've never had this problem before.

I know apps like Google, Facebook, and Feedly all have an option in the settings to open externally or within the app.

I know, I've explicitly changed the switch for that in Facebook for instance, but still the same.

This isn't technically a "problem". It's how Google is making things flow smoother in apps. As mentioned, most apps let you choose how to open it but Inbox doesn't appear to have that option. Not yet anyway. If you need the full Chrome browser, you can tap the three dot menu at the top and select "open in chrome" as you mentioned. But the custom tab is basically the same thing as Chrome.

Well, that's not correct.
First I flashed the last March Factory Image with the wipe command removed from the flash-all.bat file. Then I ran into a problem and did the aforementioned factory reset which I thought is supposedly the same as flashing the image including wiping. Now I finally gave up and flashed the image again including the wipe-command. Now it's back to normal again and links are being opnened again in the browser directly. I know the Custom Tab is basically the same as a normal tab, but I don't like them just alone for the fact that I can't open a link in a separate tab within the Custom Tab. Of course I know that I can open Custom Tabs in Chrome afterwards but like I said I find that tedious, for me that's just another unnecessary step that I'd like to avoid.
