KnockON (''double tap'') and Glance View not working properly - LG G4 H815 - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I have an LG G4 H815 model, upgraded to Marshmallow six months ago. Last month, the device started to have a boring problem with the KnockON function. Basically I can't wake up the display while the device is locked: the double tap is not working properly, it works every 6-7 times I try the double tap. Neither the Glance View is working, and when I try to do it, rarely It unlocks the screen: seems that the device in that case sees the Glance View gesture as a double tap.
I've already tried everything: hard reset, downgrade to Lollipop, another hard reset, proximity sensor test with multiple app. Everything works fine, also the double tap to lock, the touchscreen works perfectly. The only problem is the KnockON and Glance View while the G4 is locked. I don't have any kind of case and screen protector.
Any ideas about how can I solve this?

i have the same issue,some solve ?

Well another victim suffering from the same problem here. Really getting sick of this device man.

I've tried with the Always On app from the Play Store, which allows to double tap to unlock. And it works perfectly with this application. Now I'm sure that we're talking about a software problem

That is the feature of the application if you look carefully at the details on its google play page. When you use the app, your display will always be on. It is not related to the original double tap to wake already which is supposed to work when the screen is off. So I would assume it's still a hardware problem. Goshhh why are there so many hardware problems with LG?

You're right...Didn't assume that problem.

Hardware issue
I may be wrong, but I feel that this may be a screen/connector issue. I have two G4s, one has the KnockON issue described in this thread, and the other one doesn't have the issue. I recently had to put the mainboard of the G4 with functioning KnockON into the chassis of the G4 with the malfunctioning KnockON. When I did the switch, KnockON was problematic even though it it worked perfectly when in the other chassis. I switched the boards again to make sure I didn't break something, and sure enough, KnockON was working as it should when the mainboard was put back into it's original chassis. KnockON even worked with the mainboard from the problematic phone, when it was put into the other chassis which didn't have KnockON problems.
This leads me to thinking that there's a problem with either the screen or the mainboard connector. I could be wrong though...

I know there is a little rubber plug in the prox sensor a lot of people forget to put in theyre new lcds. And it causes knockon not to work very good

Hello,
I had the same problem as well, it seems that I loose the setting from time to time...
I found the solution already in the forum but cannot find it again.
Here it is :
1) Install quickshortcutmaker from the playstore
2) select "normal search"
3) search for "knock on"
4) launch the setting with the "try" option
5) see if the box for knock on is ticked (if not tick)
that's it, I hope it helps

The screen protector.
Make sure its nt envolving the proximity sensor

I've already tried with the shortcut app, but it wasn't useful because KnonON was ticked. I don't have the screen protector, so I suppose that the problem is related to the screen or the proximity sensor itself. Today i'm gonna open the phone and check if there is something wrong, or maybe I'll take it back to the customer service at the shop

It doesn´t matter what you tried, I talked to an LG tech lately, it´s a hardware issue. The proximity sensor is partly defective, so all these software workarounds don´t work. Period.

Missing option

Since I have problems that I cannot manage to solve with the KNOCK ON function (sometimes it doesn't work while most of the time a simple slide is enough to wake up the screen, turning it on while in my pocket) I wanted to turn it off with the quickshortcutmaker app, but it seems like I simply do not have the knock on setting. If I search "knock on" it gives me no results, while typing "knock" only the knock code wizard is found. I have done a factory reset last week, but I still have the same problem.
How is it possible that I cannot find the Knock On option even though I can still turn on the phone with the double tap? Anyone had the same issue?

I have the opposite problem. Mine is too sensitive; when I tap once and then again a few minutes later, this is registered as double tap! This means that the screen turns on itself in my pocket all the time. If I blow on it, it can turn on!
I'm not using a screen protector and the screen is clean. I think this started after I left the phone in the sun for a long time while hiking. The proximity sensor, light sensor and touch are fine.
I have not found a fix so just disabled KnockOn as @marcge 63 suggested.

Same problem h815
Phone calls(whatsapp call) working perfectly. And screen turning off Itself, proximity sensor working but double tab unlock Or knockCode not working properly.this is lcd screen problem or Kernel Problem? Now im using imperium rom.sometimes screen opening itself And i try 1-2-3-~ tap and opening 5 -10 second later.this is a NEW PROBLEM

Wow so many in here with this bug i hate this double tap to wake not working im trying to downgrade to lollipop to see if the problem will go away but too bad nougat have an anti rollback i guess i will use my power button now lol

[Q] sometimes screen won't turn on when I double tap to wake.

Hello,
I just bought LG G4 for a week . It perfect in every way, I love camera so much.
But I have one problem ,sometimes double tap to wake is not work properly no matter I try to knock ( knock slow or fast)
Until I need to press the button at the back, and then screen is turn on and I can use knock on again.
Is my G4 is normal ?
Thank you for your answer
Jo
It happens. For many it's rare and others it's more common. Mainly it's because of the touchscreen issues the g4 has.
Happens occasionally for me. Just tap a little harder.

If you have a knock code set up, try tapping the knock code instead of double tap. Occasionally, even when the phone should be unlocked, it'll wake up from the knock code but not the double tap. I discovered this when I got frustrated and double tapped repeatedly, then the screen came on and said if I entered the knock code incorrectly one more time I would be locked out.

Same problem here, my phone looks like is deeply sleeping
i have to try tapping at least 3-4 times in order to wake it up,
it begins to be frustrating! If it helps i have a 10B fw
Mine can work even with a very light touch, almost like a normal finger press to select an icon when the phone is on. Usually I would tap somewhat harder, but out of curiosity I tried a very light touch and it still worked to wake the phone.
Try tapping on the upper half of the screen. Sometimes the Smart lock is activated after 4 hours of un use.

it doesn't matter if you tap lightly or harder
this is not a resistive type of screen (like in the old days where you have to tap harder for the screen to register touches), but capactive
capactive screens don't differentiate between taps - every tap is the same
the issue is with LG - this is a known bug where some taps do not register and thats why double tap to wake doesn't work properly
this has been a number 1 problem for me with this phone
I have to tap like a maniac most of the time, before phone will wake up..
For awhile the G2 had a similar issue. One trick that helped me: on your last tap, hold it for a bit longer. So if you you have it set to unlock when you double tap, instead of a quick tap, tap you would go tap, taaap. I know that sounds weird, but by holding the last tap it seemed to register the code better, for whatever reason.
Good luck! As always, YMMV.
Mine does this, especially when charging. Tapping on the top left works almost always.

I have found that if you have any type of security lock on the phone it doesn't work when tapping in the area of the lock (knock code area or pin). Even when smart lock is enabled I have noticed only tapping in the upper third of the screen will the phone wake up.
I have more success with knock code when screen is off than double tap, but I don't like having the code so I deal with the missed taps. Can anybody with the latest firmwares chime in here? I haven't updated ls991 to zv5 yet cause I don't want to deal with the "1" bootloader thing
Guys its not a bug dont double tap the corners of your phone it will not work just tap middle of the screen. Always work for me

Glad this helped!
I've discovered that Smart Lock doesn't always unlock the phone when connected to a trusted bluetooth device (especially if the device isn't in use but just connected), or when using a trusted place but not enabling High Accuracy for location. In these cases, the knock screen is waiting on the blank screen and it won't take double tap to unlock.
I turned on High Accuracy locations and double tap almost always works at home. If the bluetooth device is in use (streaming media, etc.) double tap also almost always works too.
Hi all, i also have a tap issue on my lg g4, the lg service repairman said they would replace my front cover, is this the proper way to solve the tap/touchscreen issue? Please help me as i am really frustrated with my g4. Thanks and God Bless! John Aleta

FWIW, If you are on Verizon, a new update has been released which is supposed to help with the touch issues.
Is this covered by the new LG warranty announcement?

Screen refuses to turn off

Display is set to turn off after 30 seconds but it refuses to turn off whatsoever. Manually pressing the power button causes the screen to turn off but a moment after it will turn back on. The screen does not turn off!! I'm suspecting a possible wake lock issue because Wake Lock Detector reports lid_suspend_blocker (under Kernel wakelock) triggered 6000 times...

I would suggest either doing a factory reset or flashing a different ROM to see if the problem persists. If so, you might have a hardware problem on your hands.
I just switched to LineageOS few days ago. Before this, I was on stock ROM. On both ROMs, I had to disable the flip cover functionality because the flip cover overlay would constantly pop up and close randomly even though I have never used a flip cover before.

understood. factory reset not going to help. that is an issue with sim flex.. have you ever opened your device? try to tighten all the screws. else the only solution is to replace sim flex and some times bottom pcb too.

Hi, how do you know it is due to sim flex problem? I have the same problem and it happens after a while after I change my battery. Not sure if it is related. Also, I have problem with 4g. The 4g signal is full but I have a cross below and there is no internet.
Last time I had this screen problem and it resolves itself after I changed a cover but now it doesn't work.

yes it is issue with design. some time opened devices report that issue. remover the battery and remove the bottom charging port PCB. install again and tighten the every screw firmly. if does't work and you do not want to use cover view. simply turn off cover view from settings
Tightening the bottom screws worked for me.. Thanks

Alternative to "tap to wake": "wave to wake"

I've seen lots of people complaining that Mi A1 does not have "tap to wake" feature. I personally don't miss it since i'm using the fingerprint reader to wake and unlock in one go.
However, I've seen and tested that small free and open source app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jarsilio.android.waveup
With this, you can wake phone by "waving" your hand above the proximity sensor.
I've put it on my A1 for 1,5 day now, and have seen no battery drain Developer explains:
Unfortunately, some smartphones let the CPU on while listening to the proximity sensor. This is called a wake lock and causes considerable battery drain. This isn't my fault and I cannot do anything to change this. Other phones will "go to sleep" when the screen is turned off while still listening to the proximity sensor. In this case, the battery drain is practically zero.

But it seems on A1 we are good to go.
I know it's not exact same feature than "tap to wake", but you might still want to give it a try if you're looking for a way to wake phone without using hardware button. As well it can wake the phone when taken out of pocket!

First of all, thank you for the recommendation. This app is working flawlessly for now but I'm just curious about a feature. I have enabled the feature that allows to cover the proximity sensor to lock the screen. It needed device admin permission for that. Now, when I wave to wake it up, it takes me to the enter pin screen instead of fully unlocking so I have to enter the pin to unlock the device because it says that the device is locked by admin. Is there a workaround to bypass this one extra step?

This looks like the Nova's "double tap to lock" feature. If you're not rooted you need to grant admin permission to lock the screen, which requires PIN everytime you log back in.
Exactly, if you're not root, the "lock" feature is no good if you use fingerprint, I have disabled it, anyway phone goes to sleep on its own.
You should also check out KinScreen (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teqtic.kinscreen), it does wave to wake and also has many options to control when the screen stays on. For example, you can set it to stay on when your phone is at more than a 45° angle (like most times you're on your phone, reading something).

You can basically use double tap to wake with this, just enable it and tap your proximity sensor to wake.

Double tap to wake issue

Hello, I have 2 Nokia 6.1 in my family, one has the double tap to wake and it works perfectly, but the other one dosen't work... even if I unchek and check again the setting in display settings, when I try it it never works. But it's working if I tap like 3 or 4 times without stop it will wake up. but 2 tap never work. ( i DON'T have a screen protector or case, nothing (on both))
Do you know why? Do you have this problem? My Nokia 6.1 doesn't have a double-tap but a triple-tap (or more) to wake lol... :crying:
the real question is, is it a hardware issue?
Thanks guys!
I have experienced it too, when the phone is inactive for longer times it's harder to wake it up that way, but when notification comes it wakes up instantly with 2 taps.
It's very weird, I hope it's not a hardware tuchscreen issue!
I just tested tap to wake on my previous phone (Xperia Z3) and the 2 tap to wake world perfectly anytime, but with my 6.1 it's like there is an issue...
Yes, something is definitely wrong, but maybe it has to be that way so battery lasts longer or something, because it works fine when you tap it right after using it,
but when it's not being used for a while then it starts to disobey.
Maybe its related to the fingerprint sensor or unlock patern
the phone seems to go into a deep sleep if it's been locked for a while, I guess this is why the battery life is good - I found when this happens double tap doesn't work and certain apps effectively close themselves if they're not actively doing anything.
Guys, I don't speak with just my Nokia 6.1, I have 2 Nokia 6.1 in front of me.
Both have fingerprint for unlock, both 100%, both are the same, both with tap to wake enabled...
When I double tap together there is one who NEVER wake up... except when I X tap like a dumb, like "taptaptaptaptap..." and then it understand that someone double tap after 5-10 times lol... but the other one works everytime (EVERY) prefect...
I will maybe make a video

Same problem here. If the phone is sleeping for like 10+ mibutes, the first double tap does absolutely nothing, I have to redo it a 2nd time. If it sleeps a minute or two it is working first try.

Weird, inconsistent touch screen behaviour after screen replacement

So I've recently replaced my screen and I'm getting some strange behaviour with the touch interactivity. I have turned on tap visibility in the developer options and will try and descibe what is happening...
It seems to really dislike some apps, for example on the home screen it is the worst - It sees my fingertip contact when i tap, but its as if i'm holding my fingers down. This is the kind of behaviour in the lock screen too.
The weird thing is though, that I can get to the settings menu through holding the power key > "Side key settings" - and everything works perfectly. In other apps it its also pretty usable - though maybe slightly more laggy sometimes and can hang for a few moments.
I am wondering whether this sounds like a software or a hardware issue to anyone with more expertise? (relatively new to this repair/modding stuff). I have tried downgrading it to a younger version of android with odin but that didn't work. I am also wondering whether rooting might open some possibilities?
Thanks
