Alcatel Idol 4S with Windows 10 Development and Hacking Thread - Windows 10 Mobile

Hey Everyone,
I just picked up a shiny new Alcatel Idol 4S with Windows 10 for $288 from T-Mobile US.
Some interesting things out of the gate:
1. I was browsing the ROM, and it has a "Field test" app that uses InteropServices.
2. It uses the Lightning bolt and Gear screen to flash with WDRT.
3. There are two PROVXML files baked in the ROM to remove "Nokia Glance Screen" and "Nokia Feedback App". They don't appear to be present in the rom though.
4. From looking in the "Device Platform ID", there is no difference between the T-Mobile-Branded one and the unlocked one. It is "ALCATEL.8996.IDOL4S".
5. the partition layout is "Different" than the non SD820 phones.
6. perhaps most interestingly, the phone appears to be 100% identical to the TCL 950 Android phone. right down to the supported bands! http://www.tclmobile.com.cn/index.php?g=Content&m=Products&a=detail&tp=TCL950_overview
I'll update with more after I unbox it.
*Update 1*
1. Now that I have the phone, they have a rather extensive testmode app. It can be launched from the dialer via ##2886#
2. I was able to install Interop Tools and follow the process outlined under "For All Other OEM Devices" to get full reg access. I then changed my MTP root to C:\

I need the open market FFU. Any sign of that yet or anywhere?

HD2 again?!! I would buy this phone right now!

I tried to pull it from WDRT, but it says that it doesn't exist yet...Hopefully they will post it soon.

Yes. Same here. So interestingly just for kicks I tested the t-mobile ffu. FYI: It flashed no problem on my unlocked model.

If you can log the updates can be very helpful .
for example update log from 10586 to 14393

@compu829
As far as the prov xml goes. Glance being removed, does that mean it removes all drivers. dll files, packages, registry entries, etc..?
Do you see any reason the screen hardware would not be capable to run glance? Before I returned my last 6071w I had glance installed, but obviously not working...but I had not spent more than a day working on it. I re-ordered one off Amazon since they were cheaper there, and it should arrive today some time.
Can you share any other findings you have come across?...thanks.

I've been wanting to try a few things on the unlocked model, but the FFU file for it is still not up. Any news?

It comes pre-installed with 14393. Why is logging updates helpful or are you referring to when jumping to another version?

You may have discovered this already and I beleive you mentioned something like it in your original post. ##2886# enables the built-in diag tool (oem-tool-sft).

Any updates on the idol 4s windows phone? I want to ditch windows mobile and get android on here but it looks like there hasnt been much on that front anywhere from what Ive found

Ok. @ngame What's the best way to capture that information, field medic or through system file access? Point me to where I can find that out. With the next release coming in a couple of months I would like to log the info.

I was wondering if any of you gifted modders might be able to enhance the camera software/firmware? Being able to produce RAW images would be nice, for a start.
Thanks

The camera hw is more than capable, but needs tons of tuning. We would only be limited to regedits for now, which do not add up to much. It really needs a fw tweak or update to improve most of the areas. RAW images though can be generated with out much mods like that. I believe the camera app Proshot allows images produced/saved in raw mode.

I was able to find one tweak for the Default Camera app. Let me know if you see any other changes from this tweak besides the obvious Capture Living Images being enabled.
After adding the below keys and values I enabled the Capture Living Images option in my default camera for the Idol 4s
Add Key:
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\Nokia\Camera]
Name: Barc
Added these values:
BarcVersion String=101.1
DNGDisabled Dword=0
IsEnabled Dword=1

support still?
would like to know if this is still supported and if your working on this at all ? i bought this phone almost a month ago and looking foward to anything new that you guys might put out

It is able to be pulled down now. For some reason I am having issues flashing it with the default app. Not sure if it has to do with something I did or not. Anyone else try flashing the Open Market FFU yet?

This has led to an issue for flashing the open market FFU btw. Since the current PLAT ID of both phones are the same, and the Open market FFU is identifiable by PLAT ID ALCATEL.8996.IDOL4S.NA

In my spare time I found out a way to enable AT&T VoLTE Services for this phone. Been testing it out the past couple of days...But I am not officially working on this...
In fact, the method I used should work for any current Windows 10 mobile phone, but I only have a 950XL and IDOL4s to test on.

Can you please share the steps regarding how to enable VOLTE on IDOL 4S?
Thanks a lot.

How do I create custom Accent themes?

The 10 colors on WP7 Mango just aren't doing it for me. I'm pretty new so could anyone give me a few pointers on how to change these colors to ones of my own liking?
My info:
HTC Trophy
Verizon Wireless
Mango 7712
Edit: I probably should have posted this in Q&A I'm sorry!
If you are unlocked and running anything other than Mango 7661 than you want to install Advanced Config. This allows you to set custom themes, custom ring tones, etc.
I'm trying to unlock my device, but I'm finding it impossible since I can't send an .exe file to my phone via any email service and you cannot unzip on WP7 so how do I go about doing this?
the exe is run from the computer
read the guide before you start
the .cer is run from the phone

ChevLab unlock, then use Heathcliff74's tool. Then you can put anything on your phone.
Well worth the $9 IMO. Only took me 30-45 minutes to go from stock mango to interop-unlocked with internet sharing, advance config, customed out.
My Mozart is unlocked and the Advanced Config tool keeps giving me a win32exception error
When will i ever get that orange accent on the Windows Phone 7.5 commercials?

Actually this was also the case for me, however after flashing with Ansar's 5.01 Trophy ROM, Advanced Config no longer do the trick for me.. Also Registry Editor no longer changes anything. But I've got IS working, so I'll live without Accent Color changing for a while until a new ROM gets released (DFT v2).
@Seed 2.0: You're instructing the owner of an HTC phone to use a tool that only runs on Samsung phones. Think about that one for a sec.
@e_rl: The Chevron Labs unlock will let you sideload "most" apps to your phone, but doesn't allow apps that can access high permissions (ID_CAP_INTEROPSERVICES). This includes anything like Advanced Config. For that you need "interop-unlock" which is difficult to get on HTC phones - you pretty much have to roll back to NoDo to get it right now (yes, it's a pain). You also need to have the Connection Setup app from HTC's marketplace, so don't bother rolling back if you don't. Then look up the threads on "U2M7720". It will also get you on the release build, which is a good thing - still running 7712 by now is just pointless.
Oh, by the way, the color shown in the ads is actually on the phone already, or t least on all the ones I've seen so far. It used to be called "orange" and was renamed to "mango" for this version release. Still, it's nice to be able to use truly custom colors.

Hey man i see you mention HTC phones rolling back to NODO to get interop unlocked . I was under the impression that you would have to be Pre nodo , which is impossible on the Verizon Trophy .. i think . I was led to believe that Interop unlock on the Verizon trophy at all is impossible ... are you saying that it is ? Because i still have a nodo backup and have no issue with going back to it if it means interop .
Or maybe i am misunderstanding you .. thanks for any light you can shed on the situation !
No, you only have to roll back to *some* pre-Mango build (7403, the intermediate build between NoDo and Mango, even works; it doesn't have interop-lock).
The reason for rolling back to pre-NoDo is if you needed to use the original ChevronWP7 Unlocker, which doesn't work on NoDo or newer. If you have a developer (AppHub) account, or if you use the new ChevronWP7 Labs unlocker, you can dev-unlock the phone on NoDo and then install U2M7720.
Sorry for being a pain , but im relatively new to WP7 and you just made my entire week by saying interop is possible . Could you maybe lay out a step by step ? I am currently unlocked via Chevronlabs (new one) .
Word around the Trophy section is grim and this would bring some excitement to everyone if it works .
I do not have HTC connection settings in my HTC market ... does that mean its no good now ?
Yeah, sorry - if you don't have Connection Setup then you won't be able to interop-unlock on Mango right now. It's possible another app can be used the same way, but that will require more investigation. To be honest, I've not actually used U2M7720 myself - I interop-unlocked my HD7 by upgrading to Mango during its pre-release period, and using Connection Setup - but there have been multiple reports of it working.
The trick is that Connection Setup is an interopservices app that can be run on Mango anyhow, because it's marketplace signed, but it reads a file on the device that can contain additional operations to perform while setting up your connection (the \Windows\CustClear.provxml file). Prior to Mango, you use an interop app to place that file there (numerous apps exist, U2M7720 is one such but hardly the only - you can even do it manually using TouchXplorer). Then after upgrading, you run Connection Setup and it processes the registry change instructions in the provxml file for you. This makes the required changes to interop-unlock your phone.
The catch is that the official upgrade straight from NoDo to Mango also installs an HTC update that breaks the ability of Connection Setup to use the CustClear.provxml file. U2M7720 works around this by using the beta-upgrade path, putting your phone on retail Mango but without the HTC update (it can still be installed, but installs separately). Because I upgraded my phone from the pre-release anyhow, I didn't need U2M7720. Connection Setup isn't optional, though.
EDIT: Connection Setup is now back in the Marketplace! Much rejoicing to be had.
hmmm .. so would it work if you (or some other fine xda member) uploaded the xap for connection setup? Also , I upgraded to mango during the beta prerelease as well , but then did the official update .
So even if i roll back to NODO , since i did the official update , it will still be broken ? Thats terribly disappointing .
I guess it is impossible after all .

umm.... Advanced Config originally started on HTC devices am i wrong? Samsung Focus has some mishandled exception error when launching.
@goldenpipes: It's totally possible that it did. This fact is even remotely relevant why? It's been available for, and functional on, HTC, Samsung, and LG phones for many months now, since well before Mango.

Unfortunately, after the Win32Exception error, the apps UI works, but in terms of functionality it doesnt (for me at least), it throws a whole bunch of error codes at me when I try to apply the custom accent changes...

The WindowBreak Project

"What am I doing, why am I here, what is this about, and where am I going with this."
Hello all. After dealing with rumors, rumors of rumors, and the like, I've finally managed to disclose something I hold very dear to me: the WindowBreak project.
As the name suggests, this is a jailbreak project for Windows Phone 7. I started something a while back that had little success, but through the months, I've managed to figure out something that should bring light into the Windows Phone jailbreaking scene.
Real quick, though:
What this is: A project, with information about some interesting exploits I found, and a call for the community to dive in.
What this isn't: A full fledged jailbreak. Please don't post replies such as "when will XXXX device be supported". It just wastes time, and I assure you, I want every device included.
It also is not a full unlock. Just interop.
The details
So here's the sitch. We all know how Heathcliff74's interop unlock works. XAP files are just ZIP files, and ZIP files can have entries that allow extracting in parent directories.
Interesting thing is, this can be done using the ZipView application, which normally stores data in \Application Data\Volatile\Zipview\<random id>
Thus, creating a directory in a ZIP file called ../../../../provxml will copy all those files into the \provxml\ folder upon extraction.
See what I did there?
Limitations
Of course, there are limitations.
1) We cannot extract into \Windows\. There's a policy that prevents it.
2) The bad one: We can only extract known MIME types, at least to my knowledge. This is because the files are only extracted when they are clicked on in ZipView. And clicking on a .dbz file, for example, will just say the file type is not supported. Bummer.
What we can do...
As mentioned above, this can be used for a fresh out of the box jailbreak for Samsung devices, using provxml. Here's a video of that:
Try it yourself: with a Samsung device, go to http://windowsphonehacker.com/windowbreak and press WindowBreak Me.
In theory, this would be all we need to jailbreak most Windows Phone devices. Unfortunately, Nokia and HTC devices block the registry entries in provisioning files. I'm not sure what the extent of this "whitelist" (or is it a blacklist?) is, and details/tests on this would be appreciated.
What needs to be done...
Nokia: I don't have a Nokia device, but I've been working a great deal on figuring out how to crack it's shell, and have a couple of ideas. If I'm able to get my hands on a Nokia device soon, I'll try some of these unorthodox exploits out, otherwise I'll need some daring volunteers.
HTC: I do have an HTC device, but I can't figure out how to extract the files for the Connection Setup program. If someone can give me details on what the password encryption is on it, etc, for the HTC interop unlock, that would be much appreciated.
Other devices: Not a lot of demand for these (and LG needs no jailbreak, since it has MFG), but if something comes up, feel free to share where the provisioning files exist and I'll see about "windowbreaking" them.
So this is my little project, and I hope the details I'm sharing will lead to further development. My personal device (Samsung Focus) is easily interop unlocked now, without costing me a cent. I'd really like this to be the case for everyone; I'm not saying the $9 unlock for Chevron Labs is bad, in fact, it's greatly supported homebrew. What I am saying, though, is that freedom is still possible, and regardless, any developments made here will further support interop unlocking on Chevron/apphub unlocked devices. With that in mind...
Merry Christmas.
Special thanks to: Heathcliff74 for much of the research and idea behind the exploit
All the supporting members of XDA, who bring appreciation for what we do. Thank you.
Cool! Ridiculous that I didn't think of this myself
I will send you the password of the dbz files when I get home. I don't have it here.
But the real problem for HTC and NOKIA are the whitelists. I've been working on this for the past time. And today I made more progress. I developed a new way of debugging native 3rd party dll's/drivers. U can isolate functions and call them from a test app for unit-testing. This makes testing a lot easier. This will help me find exploits much faster. I can even call the whitelist functions of HTC and NOKIA on my Samsung now Working on it right now.
Good find!!

Both brands have very similar mechanisms. They both have a driver dedicated to provisioning. The whitelists are implemented in those drivers. HTC has whitelisted only specific registry keys for APN's and stuff. NOKIA does not have the registry on the whitelist at all.

yea I can't wait for this. I have a HTC HD7.
Well done man, exactly what worked also with calling provxml files from the iso storage in DiagProvXML. Just do "../the entire path to iso storage/provxml.ext" this worked also on htc. Although of course your mechanism is different as you have to copy it to the correct folders while we just needed to change the default paths of the drivers to a custom folder.
Well done and nice creative solution. It would be great if you manage to get this working for more devices.
Maybe somebody can somehow find the exact provisioning the Developer Registration Tool makes, so you can use that one as that should be white listed I assume.
The Registration tool actually uses a socket connection to send a partly modified cookie string to the phone. The phone then goes and checks that against microsoft's servers and goes OK.
hey ii was just wonderiing, as nobody rarely mentions the dell venue pro, if something was going to be actually done for it. I know you said dont post stuff liike this but its just that ive never heard something like this or anything done about the Dell Venue Pro.
Thanks
Is the point of this for it to go from out of the box to interop unlocked, or from chevron/dev unlock to interop?
In /Classes Root/ registry part you can add the file type so it's known...

Adding apps to WP7 (HTC Arrive)

I'm not used to this so it may have already been posted, but I'd like to know how to install apps onto my HTC Arrive. I just switched from Android and all you have to do is drag and drop the apps.
Thanks for your patience.
you mean homebrew apps? or the apps on the marketplace?
if it's apps on the marketplace, there should be a tile on your home screen that says "Marketplace"
if it's homebrew apps, you have to register as a developer on msdn.microsoft.com, (dev license is $100, but they are giving away lots of dev accounts)
Lol no, I meant like where we don't have to pay...like you jailbreak on iphone and android you just download the apk.
You simply can't. XAP's have to be deployed via developer tools. For this your device has to be developer unlocked. WP7 is a heavily sandboxed system so it doesn't allow direct execution of XAP's via a fileexplorer etc. Maybe with a fully unlocked custom ROM.
google "chevronwp7", (cant post links cos i'm new here), they do dev unlock for you, but they have a limited number of devices they could unlock per month
or, if you are student you can get it unlocked for free.

if you want to "adding"(we call it deploy) app to your phone ,you should unlock you phone as first
there is 3 way to unlock your device but you can only use develop unlock on HTC Arrive at this moment(as far as i know)
it;s complicated ,some how like to jailbreak your iphone, and jailbreak is much more easier
you can use search to learn it ...
then ,you should install wp7.1 sdk(you might have already installed it when you unlocking you phone)
and you should have a deploy tool to deploy apps on your phone....
and ZUNE is required as well

You can discuss unlocking, of course. But not where/how to download cracked apps.

[Q] How to Enable Multiple User Profiles in Jelly Bean 4.2?

Searched high and low for this but have not found a guide for setting this up.
1. I need this as a way to use two Google Voice accounts on the same Android device. One GV number for work and one personal. (Ironically this is the only reason I still use my iPhone as my primary cell phone.)
2. I would love to setup a third profile for my 10 month old daughter so she can play with the phone and not have me worry that she is accessing/modifying/deleting sensitive information.

is it the PA 2.99+1??
Code:
/frameworks/base/core/res/res/values/config.xml
<!-- Maximum number of supported users -->
<integer name="config_multiuserMaximumUsers">[COLOR="Red"]1[/COLOR]</integer>
Change the number to whichever you like.
Code:
/frameworks/base/core/java/android/os/UserManager.java
public static int getMaxSupportedUsers() {
// Don't allow multiple users on certain builds
if (android.os.Build.ID.startsWith("[COLOR="Red"]JVP[/COLOR]")) return [COLOR="Red"]1[/COLOR];
return SystemProperties.getInt("fw.max_users",
Resources.getSystem().getInteger(R.integer.config_multiuserMaximumUsers));
}
Either change JVP to something else, or change the number.
Good luck.
Go vote up the feature request (cause I'd love to have it on my phone as well for my baby to play with):
https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/CYAN-139
I also took tristan202's post and commented on the ticket as well.
There are mods that enable it. But there are also apps. Try this one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5hcHBhaG9saWNzLnVtIl0.
Or this one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.sferadev.multipleuser
Thanks. The first one looks like a hack for 4.1, then again I just skipped 4.1 and went straight to 4.2 from 4.0.
I wonder how he did the 2nd one, since it is java code than needs to change and be recompiled. Then again, I am not an Android developer (yet - this may make me pull the branch and patch it myself). So this may be compiled in the Java VM on-boot-if-changed and cached for reuse. That would allow anyone to change it via ADB.
Think I'll try that myself.
I wonder why it was disabled for devices with phones.
People on tablets report a perfect user experience switching between users on 4.2 and keeping everything separate, including the apps and settings.
So if that was the case, and a phone call was received when User B was using User A (aka "Primary User" for 4.2 multi user setups), what do u think would happen?
What about an SMS or even MMS that allows saving of attachments?
Clearly those are intended for the "primary user" account on that phone. But the saving of user data gets changed under multi-user mode to those virtual aliases like:
/storage/emulated/0/
/storage/emulated/1/
Etc.
Clearly this may have issues when devices with cellular radios in them and receiving calls and SMS/MMS.
Maybe that is why?

Also, if logged into one account and "switching" to another, it can take 3-8 seconds. And that is on the tablets with faster ram and cpus than our phones.
The idea of "switching" when ur phone is ringing might not be viable.

So what's new in 7.8?

Hey all,
Thank to your help I was able to update my Lumia 900 to 7.8 yesterday.
So far, here's what's new:
- New start screen (which we are all aware of {which I love by the way})
- More Accent colors
- Ability to use Bing as Wallpaper
- Bluetooth Transfer and Ringtone maker now work (it didn't work on 7.5 for me)
- Ability to make google as your default search engine in Internet Explorer
So far this is all I noticed... If there's more please feel free to add
they need background voip, otherwise i am dumping wp and going back to android. MS already has 2 strikes against them, current lumias will not get wp8 and we have not gotten 7.8 before Christmas.

Background VoIP isn't (and never was) coming to WP7.8. So, make your departure before wasting any time.

Yeah, unfortunately, both apps can't be downloaded for 7.8 anymore.
I'm not sure why... my guess is they will be available when 7.8 will be official.
