root - Sprint LG G5 Questions & Answers

Will this phone get root ? Or should I sell it??
Thanks

People who use root to cheat the system and get free wifi hotspot and other services are the reason they don't really want us to get rooted. I'm switching carriers because Sprint locks good people out of their phones. T-Mobile and the others are better about letting customers root their phones.

Your premise makes no sense. There are no carriers who "let" you root your phone. It's all on the manufacturer. What other carriers do anything less to hinder you from rooting?
I have an HTC phone. My wife has a G5. We are both on the same Sprint plan. But HTC allows me to unlock my bootloader which makes rooting a trivial process. LG has done a great job of locking the the G5 down so very few models have been exploited. This is great from a security standpoint. But Sprint has nothing to do with it. My previous phone was a G3, and I had it rooted and BL unlocked 6 ways from Sunday. Sprint didn't make that process any easier or harder.
Switch carriers if you want, but don't think it's because TMo will give you the green light to root your phone. They don't control it.

[Q] Locked bootloader

I see the developer addition of the Note 4 is available. I do not want a Verizon sucks conversation, but iI am interested in why Verizon locks the bootloader. Does Verizon have an official answer? Does it have something to fo with lost revenue from taking Verizon completely out of my OS? How about those reading this with much more knowledge then I. What are some legitimate benefits to a locked bootloader?
BTW....I do agree....its my phone and I should be able to do what I want with it.
they locked to keep our XDA members from messup the phone from flashing and tweaking then return for exchange when bricked the device ...lol

Officially? It's hard to get Verizon to address any of their customer concerns "officially."
There is some rather reasonable supposition. 1) Verizon sees enterprise customers as their bread and butter. Enterprise customers demand security. Unlocked bootlockers are not secure. 2) Verizon and other carriers are concerned about excessive warranty claims. There's a thread somewhere here where someone tried to root their brand new Note 4. Most people don't even know why they want to root, but they'll do it anyway without the necessary knowledge beforehand.
Was that VZ Note 4 they tried t root bricked?

Should I ROOT?

Hello everyone I just got the lg g4 coming from the droid turbo what a great change it was. Worth it in every way except battery life. Thing is I wanted to see if it is worth rooting? Anyone have been for a bit and willing to share any improvements? What method is best to root and if so a way to unroot as well for future reasons? Thanks so much for your help.
Root has been achieved, but isn't available yet. Gotta wait.
I get great battery life. It gets better after a few charge cycles.
Even when root comes out I would wait a bit if you have a leased plan. I would not be surprised if some of the carriers start putting in a phone home that will immediately inform them when you root and then they send you a bill for the full amount of the phone right away.
A lot of these carriers switched to this leased phone way of doing business and people need to realize you don't own your phone! The carrier owns it.
Root is always a must for me. I like root explorer and Data Sync and Titanium backup.
I am rooting ASAP is comes out. This phone needs some work under the hood.

Not saying they did anything like that for this phone... although with the carrier IQ on some of the carriers who knows! I am just saying this is something to look out for in the future.
Listen... this whole leased phone thing that most of the carriers are trying is a fairly new concept. If you lease you do not own your phone. PERIOD. It isn't yours. The carrier technically owns the phone till you choose to pay it off(if they allow that and most do). What is to say that they won't want to detect if you root your phone. If they can tell you did then what? Since it isn't technically your phone what will they do? Will they care? Well, I'm sure they will see it that all those people can now tether without paying an addon charge and they are losing X amount in money since they are getting something for free. You or any other logical person may not see it as them losing money but that is not how companies view things.
Again, not saying this is something that will popup with the LG G4 and surprise everyone. I'm just saying watch out. There is a reason they won't unlock any of the US carrier bootloaders.
I doubt that carriers will be implementing that technique of being notifed right away when the phone gets rooted. If they do then one can sue or take to court because they are invading privacy.

You also don't own your phone with the subsidized model either, until you finish your 2 year contract or pay your ETF
As a side note, I really wish you can unthank people on tapatalk.

Nobody has confirmed this. Untill we have root and zero out the laf partition and check in fastboot if its locked we will know. T-Mobile G2 n G3 have all been factory unlocked.

I thought I read that LG confirmed that the only edition that was BL unlocked was the 815 for Europe or did I read that wrong?
I just saw a post where only the 815 variant was able to get twrp recovery

T-mobile released BOH6 firmware today!!

It was not a very big download, but it did mention things like stability improvements and speed enhancements.
I have a question to ask you. Does the T-Mobile version has any kind of bootloader unlocking issues, root or any kind of development issues? Because I've always bought factory unlocked Android devices in the past and this is the first time I'm buying it from a carrier. So wanted to make sure. Also, I've seen in the past like people giving bounties to users who find a root exploit (T-Mo Xperia Z1s) as it was pretty hard to achieve. So I don't want to get a device which is pretty locked by a carrier.
Tmobile bootloaders have usually been unlocked the past few years. At least for tmobile samsung phones. They have never had a problem geeting them rooted in no time.
At&t and Verizon are the worst when it comes to getting root access on phones now days.

I thought the OEM Unlock in the developer settings toggles the bootloader lock. I may be wrong... sometimes I am.

Generallly Speaking: Is generic unlocked phone easier to root than carrier's phone?

I have a 3 yr old Galaxy S5 I'm about to retire. It was acquired from AT&T. This model has been notoriously difficult to root.
With whatever I get I don't want to be as stuck in no-root hell as I have been with this S5. (The phone itself has been great, I have just wanted to get in and mess with it.)
Generally speaking, if I buy an unlocked phone off of Amazon, for example, are these easier to root than versions that come from the carriers? In my periodic research on rooting the S5, for example, I've found that versions from other carriers are rootable but AT&T's has not been. So that's leading me to believe that the carrier's software is either 1/ more secure or 2/ more vulnerable, depending on the degree to which the carrier invests in making it bullet proof.
I've been so happy with the Samsung, buying an S8 seems quite logical. But like I said, I don't want to be stuck in no-root hell for the forseeable future.
Thanks.
Jim
Essential phone..... cheaper...... mod heaven

Verizon says mobile hotspot might not work on unlocked S9

I just called and the rep was very kind. She put me on hold and asked a tech person, then gave a detailed explanation (even referring to Verizon versions "bloatware") saying mobile hotspot might not work.
I'd like to think I could use Pdanet/Foxfi, but Verizon has continually taken steps to block that.
Any thought? Trying to decide between unlocked and Verizon version.
Least in my perspective with between going unlocked and locked... If you really want to use the carriers features, fully (VoLTE/VoWifi/Hotspot/etc) you probably should go with the carrier version. Just disable the crap you don't want. After looking into more and more it is easier to get the carrier version since I want to reliably use the features the network provides.

The thing is, I'd prefer to use Pdanet/Foxfi for hotspot, but I don't know what the chances are that Verizon could disable it on an unlocked (non-rooted) phone.
