How stupid LG can be?! - LG K10 Questions & Answers

This is something I read from the LG V10 forum:
The netizen asked LG Electronics USA branch online for the answer, and said that they are "preparing to update Android 7.0 for both models." In fact, the US mobile carrier T-Mobile homepage on the V10 will be about to update Android 7.0 soon.
*
However, this happened because LG Electronics' decision was not passed on to the US subsidiary.
*
"Both of these products are technologically optimized for Android 6.0 from the production stage, so we decided to keep software stability at its best," an official at LG Electronics said.
*
In addition, regarding the point that the Android 6.0 version comes out after the G4 release, "I will make the trend considering the future version of the smartphone manufacturing, considering the next version." If there is any part of the new OS that does not fit, I made this decision considering that, "he said.

So LG just builds phones for a particular Android version? Optimize it for that version and leave it? LG V10 was released last year with LG K series.
What if LG takes the same decision for K10? What if they say "LG K10 is technologically optimized for Android 5.1.1 & 6.0 from the production stage, so we decided to keep software stability at its best"?

They are so AWFUL. I'd just like an update list at this point. Samsung is worse about updates, and even they have a list out now.

Well this is sad, very sad. I think in the end they will push nougat to V10. However V10 will have nougat from lineage os or other way. Trouble is with mid range phones I understand why they don't develope new versions for one series because they want to sell future one with new version of android, but what the hell shoul I do with mediatek device how to make custom rom, or worse we can't flash recovery without playing with bootloader and possiblly hard brick device

They don't allow unlocking the device officially (atleast we did it unofficially on XDA) and don't release any updates for their devices.

Maybe they'll get it together. I doubt it, seeming as how they don't have to rely on sales of phones to keep the company in good standings (as long as they make those sweet AMOLED TV's that is). I think lg is content with just churning out garbage. Idk. Maybe im just against them due to the fact that my first phone was an LG Xpression 2 ( and you haven't seen that junkfest, look into it. It's a nightmare)

Didn't the AT&T variant release like 6 months after the rest? If that's so, the phone is barely a year old at this point. And it's seems like lg did agree to that whole 2 year upgrade policy that Google wanted. Nonetheless, AT&T may push for an update.

We have a better after sales support here than any other country. I talked to many people who have bricked their K10's. They had to pay to send it through post.
Well here I just had to go to the service center and tell them the problem. They never asked me any question on how it happened. They just repaired it then and there and gave it to me. That's how I started loving LG more and more.

T-Mobile supports phones even if LG doesn't support them for upgrading to newer version. So there is a 50-50 chance.

Quick question about LG and Android updates!

Hi, I just wondered how LG is at upgrading the Android versions. Like do they come quick? Are they good and mostly bug-free? Etc etc. Thinking about buying the glorious G4 because it's beautiful and I need a new phone. Probably going to run custom roms tho, but if I choose not to I'd like to know how LG is at android-updates

I switched from Sammy note 1 to G2 then G3 and now have both G3 & G4. Never need run custom ROM B4. Only Stock ROM and Cloudyfa's Stock ROM. I just love the LG UX.
Now with G4 's UX 4.0 simply awesome. No lagging for me for I only have G4 for 2 days and no root. IDK what to tell you try it don't like it just return it xD. Even my 1 year old low end LG Gpad 7.0 V400 got Lollipop OTA update in April. What to complain when LG USA MOBILE send me a Brand New LG G4 H815 to keep.
Great story, but can you answer the question the Op asked? How quickly do LG put out updates, eg. how quickly did they update from kitkat to lollipop?
Yeah, I'm wondering because it took my Z3 about an eon to update from 4.4.2 to 5.0.1, and that I really did not like. But hopefully this is an easier device to fiddle with when it comes to root and recovery than my old Z3, which was a pain in the butt sometimes. Had a good experience with my previous LG Optimus 4X HD when it came to getting it rooted with custom recovery, but man that phone is so old that it just lags when you barely look at it.

True, but also keep in mind (stock) Lollipop for some devices is still FUBAR. For example t-mobile G3.
OP: In the end 90% of the delay in a device getting an update is not the manufacturer, Its the carrier. That's why things like Nexus phones and GE phones were able to get updates fairly rapidly. The manufacturer takes the source, compiles with/against their own custom code and a bit of testing and its done. This should likely take less than 2 weeks after source drop.
What takes so long is carriers with all their bloat (getting it to work) and also making sure they have locked you down enough to make them happy and to keep any lucrative government contracts they have that require a certain immutability of the phones core OS for security reasons. This part can take months. My kids LG Stylo is T-mo branded and the T-mo my account app still crashes all the time.

That's exactly why I always go for sim-free phones and avoid the networks/carriers - much better chance of getting updates sooner (although I appreciate the short-term expense makes this unavailable to some).
Unless you have a Nexus device, I wouldn't even hope to get updates. The G2 was slow as hell, and only received 1 update ever with TMO.
Updates from LG are really good and fast. I have G3 and I can not complain.
Great story
hopefully lg goes straight to android m
Depends on the device. In the UK no G2s have Lollipop yet. Not even SIM free ones.

How is the LG Dev community? Is LG modder-friendly?

The G6 seems to have a really active dev community. Is that a one off or is that constant? Is it easy to root LG devices? I have a choice between this of the S9+ and I can't decide on what to go for.

I can't speak on behalf of the LG community as of late but the last time I had one, the G4, there was plenty of people wanting to mod/create ROM's but couldn't due to LG's restrictive bootloader unlock nature.
If it means anything, I wouldn't grab the Snapdragon 845 version of the S9+ either. If you want to root/flash ROM's, you need to get the Exynos version of the S9+. I wouldn't, as there is reportedly severe battery issues with the Exynos chipset. Getting root on the S8+ with the Snapdragon version took a very very long time whereas there was virtually no wait for the Exynos version.
I really hope there's some development for the G7!
I think it died after the G4. Just the for traffic alone in these G7 forums, should show that not many are interested in LG anymore. If it weren't for the free phones promo, I prolly wouldn't even get an LG.
The V20 had a pretty nice community for T-Mobile at least and even somewhat still does. The reason I got the Note 8 over the V30 was it had and still currently has root which I need in order to even use a phone to my liking. If the G7 or V40 has a nice root community I might get the V40. However at this point I'm likely just getting a Oneplus 6. As at this point I doubt we'll have root on the Note 9 Snapdragon version or T-Mobile devices as a whole. They used to be really root friendly like Sprint then once they became big they became pretty bad from a customer standpoint. They definitely are better than the other big two but not the carrier I fled to years ago.

This is the damned truth. I wouldn't have purchased the G7 has it not been for the buy one get one free thing..
Use to be the go to dev friendly brand...not anymore. I really wish a mainstream brand would allow for this stuff, but it seems the carriers won.
Seems like OnePlus is the way to go. Or perhaps Xiaomi. None of the mainstream brands unfortunately.

We're supposed to get Pie in Q1 of 2019 according to LG.

Where does LG say that? They never give a timeline or date prediction that I've seen. Don't trust various sites stating when they predict LG will give Pie.
Also, first ones to get PIE we'll be Korean carrier variants -- yeah, possibly Q1 2019... But everyone else will be months after that. Will be at least Q2 for rest of us, just like Oreo earlier this year.

Just like I said -- by end of 2nd quarter for V30. I KNEW that was the plan! See here:
https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/...dule-for-south-korea-v35-and-v40-are-up-next/
Android 9 Pie started rolling out to the Korean G7 today, but other models will have to wait longer. LG's schedule says the V35 will also get Pie in Q1 2019 (which ends March 31), but the V40, V30, and V30S will have to wait until Q2 2019 (ends on June 30). The G6, V20, and Q8 are expected to receive Pie in Q3, and the Q9 and X5 will get it by the end of the year.

G7, V35 and V40 are soooooo similiar, hardware wise, software probably isnt that different either...
You can use the V40 vendor partition on a G7... (just camera and so will have problems)

It's about time LG should realise that just stamping out new phones with 10 different variants isn't gonna do anything for them. With the G8 coming out soon I doubt the V30 will even be getting any security updates after the pie rollout. No cutting edge hardware is any good if it's running 2 year old software. It's one thing to treat mid tier or budget devices this way but even to your flagships, that's like axing your own foot. With the 90day security update criteria to be in the so called 'android enterprise recommended' program, LG is just doing the bare minimum so that they don't lose a marketing opportunity.

Yeah but V30 was launched in sept'17 and completes it's 3 years sept'20. Since LG takes about an year to rollout the updates(pie released aug'18 and it'll positively be Q3'19 before all V30 variants receive the update) even if the next android version releases in Q3 this year I highly doubt we'll get another software upgrade release within that 3 year time frame.

Yes, Pie will be the last letter upgrade and will start arriving Q2 2019 and continue into Q3 2019. Security updates will continue for at least a full year after that.

Security updates will continue to Q3 2020 and possibly Q2 2021 -- depending on definition of the starting line. Oreo was needed to even be in the Enterprise Recommended program, and we didn't get Oreo and the 90-day updates until Q2 2018.

Crap, Some forum say that the update was supposed to happen by the end of april.
We will see but I hope so.
Do you know some bugless and good pie rom for the LG G7 ?
Some of the branded models in eu got a update with April patch only. So likely no pie on his way. I try to hold out this year and I go back to sony or oneplus. I wanted to last for sure 2 years with this phone but not on this way. Some thing still not even fixed. Now even other flag ship support wide angle camera it's easy to leave lg.

They even move the production to Vietnam to reduce cost. That's how bad lg do. The g8 got tripple camera in Korea and dual in europe. Can't name any other brand who works like lg. Who ever upgrade is not aware of the money you trow away because if you want to get rid of it its lower than half price worth. Good device but what a shame

Since the Kernal sources for Pie for EU versions are already out.. It won't take too long to be rolled out as OTA .. May be this week itself..

Does sources were published sometime at the end of March, or beginning of April if I'm not mistaken I had them on my computer for awhile now...
I'll never buy an LG smartphone ever again

Why would they write source code just for fun? it will arrive
Official response from LG Spain. They say that the update for the LG G710EM will come in June but they are not 100% because it depends on the software update center in Korea. So the real problem is the LG center update in Korea.
Well at least lg is the second last behind htc to update 9.0 after any other company updated there flagships. What I read about other phones that have software issues like oneplus 7 pro I must say I don't even want to trade this phone because the G7 still great for what it is and reliable to me. LG could be the best in the market if they put some effort in it.

You are from the lucky ones, but of course AT&T locked i suppose.
Many others, myself included, that we use AT&T unlocked and ULM versions, are still waiting for LG to keep its promise, but i am absolutely sure that this will remain a dream.
There is no chance i think, that LG will give us this promised android 10 update, after 1 year since its release.
LG left our V35. We will not get new updates
We need LineageOS and someone who will support our phones.
The V35 is a great piece of hardware. It is sad that LG has abandonned it. Shabby software IMHO explains the dire state of LG's mobile division. The odds are good it will be shuttered, sold, or otherwise entirely different in the near future.
Getting LOS support going would be nice. Much of the foundation is in place with work on the sibling V40 and G7 phones. The prospects for it happening are low. The phone is dated so not attracting developers. To make matters worse, LOS is not a viable path forward for LG owners in USA. Carriers are shutting down 3G and redeploying the spectrum. LG's radio implementation is proprietary. Without reverse engineering or a change of heart by LG, the phones will not have VoLTE capability with LOS roms.
As for me, I keeping an eye on Sony's offerings. To LG ThinQ products I say no ThanQ.

Unfortunately i agree with you..LG abandoned V35 in its fake, except the Korean models.
Its been a few months since i put aside this wonderful device,as a back up.
I moved on with 1+7,as my daily driver, which is a really great device, got android 10 almost 1 year ago,and android 11 is on its way.
As a second device for professional reasons,i recently got a V50,which is a great device too,and even though it's a Sprint version,i use it in Europe where i live.
Immediately updated to android 10 from 9 and is going very strong.
Of course someone could say,why do you choose an LG device from the moment that the company announced its withdrawal from the smartphone industry?
I know the risks of my choice, mainly if something goes wrong and need repair, but till today, all my LG devices served me really well, despite the fact of luck of quick updates,in addition to other companies.

I didn't know that, I don't keep up much with tech news anymore. I get a phone that works for me, do the customizations I care about and forget about it. Anyways, sad to see their shutting down their phones unit without releasing 10 for us. And happy that I followed @cmrntnnr Korean Q guide a while ago.
i was looking to buy a V35 because price related to specs is awesome, but iirc, i could unlock bootloader but there is no custom ROM ?
GSI not supported on this phone ?
Sorry for theses dumbs questions
The phone is awesome hardware and android 9 isn't that bad. It's a trade-off.
I stuffed the Korean v350N android 10 in my US unlocked v35awm. All good and dandy, wifi calling working, 4G working just fine. But my car won't recognize its android auto link anymore. I get a black screen after plugging the phone to the car, even with all paired and stuff. Guess I'll back to android 9, even though the Korean 10 worked fine. But had no majors gains with Android 10, was just a test. Won't feel the downgrade much...
I also installed the Korean 10 ROM, and all is well except my mobile speed test has gone from 150/50 to 33/2 on TELUS in Canada. Any suggestions to fix this?
