Will the Verizon LG G4 VS986 work with Straight Talk sim? (the At&t one) - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I have been having some issues with networking on my LG G4. It is supposed to be unlocked, as I verified with Verizon, so I was hoping to be able to get off the Verizon towers. I am currently on Verizon's prepaid plan because I felt like it was a good deal, but in the past two or three months my phone is not working reliably. I had no issues with it before then but I haven't had it long, and even after talking to multiple people from Verizon, they have not been able to fix the service errors. Everyone else around me that I've talked to do not use the prepaid plan so I can't get advice from them.
I am an avid Pokemon GO player, and it pretty much needs a consistent internet. When I am walking through my town, I will hit a lot of areas where my network will jump from 4g LTE to 3g, sometimes to 1x. This stalls out whatever I am in the middle of doing. I've also tested to make sure it is affecting the browser, etc, and sure enough it causes it to time out. I also have constant call drops or the flat out inability to send or receive texts or calls. I have to leave my phone on speaker and sit it in one specific spot in my house for example to be able to talk on it. There are quite a few spots in my town where I get no internet access at all. My father has a Samsung Galaxy S5 that he just bought from Straight Talk, and it doesn't have any issues like my is having. His shows the Verizon logo when the phone starts, but I'm not sure that means it is using Verizon's towers.
What I am really curious about is if I can use Straight Talk, or anyone else really, to get better service. I know when I tried to talk to Straight Talk, they could not guarantee me any service details, so it was not helpful. I had asked them if there was a way to get my phone on straight talk using towers that aren't specifically the ones I am on now, but they had no information on that. After talking to a few of those representatives I tried to get up with AT&T about it, and they also could not give me any insight. I live in a pretty rural town. If the information helps I live in Columbia, North Carolina. If there is anyone that can offer advice I'd really appreciate it. Its gotten to the point where I am thinking about flat out replacing the phone and I haven't even had it 6 months yet. Thank you.

dont know about the g4 but my history with verizon phones on att is long most of the ones i have had do not support verizonz lte band
2g and 3g only google the specs on both models look in the lte bands and see if they are compatible just because one says for say 800mhrtz in 3g dosnt meant if the others 800mhrtz lte will see it both have to use the same 3g and lte bands

Sending back my Tmobile TP2

not because i dont like the phone, but because i found tmobile's service to be vastly inferior compared to ATT. I have a way to get unlimited minutes via google voice, so i need fave 5, so i think i'll be switching to verizon.
Any eta on when the verizon TP2 comes out?
What exactly do you mean by vastly inferior? I think T-Mobiles serive is great and very cheap but it's all about the area you are in. You should always go with the carrier who has the best coverage in your area.
i'm in the MD/DC/VA area.
i'm driving through areas that tmobile reports Great coverage, but i'm still experiencing dropped calls, breaking up of reception, no 3g service (it drops to edge, or G). sometimes i can't transmit ANY data
when it works, it works great, but as i'm on the road quite a bit (realtor), i need something that i can talk on reliably. ATT isn't supposed to be that great, but i definitely value their service over what i got with tmobile. i'll have to wait for verizon
i thought tmobile would be a great option just because of their costs, but the service degradation isn't worth the savings to me.
Ever since one of my old jobs, something became quite obvious to me. No matter what service you have, if you are getting **** service, the price is of no relevance. **** is **** at any price.
I have no problems with it here in Southern California, but I do understand your needs. The one on Verizon won't be out till I think they were saying Oct or something like that.

Did it help? I don't know anyone that has had to do this, so no experience with it.
I am in the same situation, I am trying out the TMobile but here in Puerto Rico is not 3g yet but I really like the phone and Att doesnt look that are going to release it soon, if they actually are going to do it... ???
They're only focusing on more densly populated areas at the moment.

Thanks for the info. Do they consider Puerto Rico a populated area? Do you know when they are going to launch it here?
According to T-mo I should be getting 3 bars (NOT) in my house but if I even pick up the TP2 I have no signal. I have repeatedly called to complain and all my neighbors also called with T-Mo to complain so after 4 months of *****ing they claim they are buying space on a tower close to me in 120 days (we shall see)...Tj
petitioning for better service isnt an option for me as i am within my trial period, and by the time they would act on it (if at all) the tp2 will be out on all the other carriers

Wow that is quite awesome. I should do the same in my area by my home. Signal is usually 1-2 bars, with it hovering around 1 bar more often than not.
I played with the TP2 on the T-Mobile 14 day trial. It was terrible! T-Mobile not the TP2! The phone is AWESOME!
Dropped calls, garbled calls, and the data is so slow you can’t get a connection half the time (browser timing out) and with Google maps the page refresh/update was so slow you would drive right off the page onto a blank screen even at moderate speeds around town. I travel around the country and it was no better anywhere. Even with 3G showing!
I’m with Verizon (not had hardly any issues with service) and plan to wait until they offer it, PLEASE DON’T START THE Verizon Vis …. Thing. Just stating an asked for opinion.

Sprint is going to release the tp2 on Sept 8th so I don't think Verizon is going to release it no later than Sept.
Guess your mileage will vary...
Here in s fl, tmo works great for me. Had att some years ago, also good here. Tmo price and cs seems better to me. Got the unlimited loyal customer plan for $49.99month. Hard to beat that.
No dropped calls, ever, and the ph seems to ring for ever if I don't answer.
Web pages open fast.
I seem to get 3-4 bars H3g service most of the time around here. Never seen 5 bars though.
Here is a screen shot at my office showing 4 bars H3g.
Same thing here. I live in Tampa and I always have full bars with 3g. but then again I think Tampa is the 11th largest city in US so it would make sense we all have pretty good service over here. Most people here, that I know or come across have t-mobile. The only thing verizon is good for around here is Fios. what;s sprint? ;p; and at&t are for rich preppy kids who think theyre cool with their iphones. At least...thats the trend over here

thanks for the confirmation rich! i feel really bad because the customer service at tmobile is GREAT! unfortunately, the actual phone service wasn't good enough for my needs. i hate having to go back to at&t, but i guess i'm enslaved to them. i'm waiting for either verizon to get it, or att now as i know i will NEVER use sprint. i really wanted to use tmobile and hoped they would meet my needs

You went to the Google I/O?! I wanted to go so bad man. Ugh. xD Btw, why don't you have Qik, you can set it up from the phone itself. Its very very easy. If you need any help let me know.
Where do you buy I/O tickets? I want to go next year.
Im FROM Puerto Rico, not living there though.
I'm from PR, living there atm, just switched over to Sprint... Any of you guys been w/them for long?
To be honest, I haven't even opened Quik yet! I got my phone on Monday (ordered online to take advantage of a StudentRate discount) and I really haven't had much time to play with it. Will post back when I've messed around w/Quik, might try rooting it as well tonight or tomorrow... New to Android, been trying to read up on stuff here and there and catch up.
EVO in bayamon. The phone is very good but the Sprint network not so much. With a 3G usb modem from AT&T I get close to 2Mbps in most places but with Sprint it stays around 200-300Kbps. Only in some places I have hit what seems to be a cap of 1Mbps. During the 4th weekend I saw the phone roaming a couple times while in the south-west area and DATA was almost unusable.
Hows the network behaving for the rest of you?
Evo from Bayamon! Too!
my Qik is NeoDark
It's behaved fine for me, I haven't had any signal issues around the metro area 'cept at home and AT&T had weak reception here as well. I live close to Bayamon, behind Buchanan, in Tintillo... At the front end of the house reception's fine, at the back end (in my room) it's borderline (data's unusable, but I can just use WiFi so it don't bother me).
I've seen it roam (I'm guessing on Claro's network?) ocasionally, when at home or at Plaza Las Americas (where everyone gets spotty reception) but it's been solid otherwise.
I haven't really bothered testing my 3G speeds... I wouldn't be surprised at all if AT&T had better peak speeds tho, that's usually the case in the US, and I'm guessing that just like over there, they have a better built-out network here as well... I've heard over in the US they can be more inconsistent tho, or have more blacked out areas compared to VZW/Sprint (and then there's all the issues they've had in dense places like NYC and SF).
I'm happy with the service overall, and I haven't even accepted the OTA patch w/the new radio updates... I wanted to root and get it via an updated ROM but I haven't had the time to do it. Looking forward to vising a friend in Aguadilla to see how the EVO and Sprint behaves elsewhere around the island.
Oh and btw, if you're comparing the AT&T modem speeds to tests done on the EVO itself, that's kind of a skewed comparison... The modem's always gonna win out. Try tethering the EVO and see what you get, you don't need to root it to do so, you can use PDANet.
I think Sprint might do some mayor upgrades in the next year in PR. Maybe even roll out wimax/4g. As far as I understand they dont have that good coverage right now and depend on other CDMA providers for roaming. They can use claro or centennial for roaming but that can change in the near future.
Claro is already running on GSM and I dont see much benefit on keeping the old CDMA network up. Running both CDMA and GSM must have costs and Sprint must consider that claro might decide to shutdown their CDMA network in the future.
Centenial runs on CDMA but now that they were sold to AT&T its not clear whats going to happen with their network. One of the conditions imposed by the FCC/JuntaReglamentadora is that AT&T must keep the CDMA network for at least 26 months before merging or shutting it down.
With all this happening I would expect Sprint to play it safe and upgrade their network all around.
anyone knows more about this?
I have no clue, but it's possible Sprint could end up buying some of Claro/Centennial's CDMA towers and equipment if they're gonna transition to GSM 100%... Would only make sense. Doesn't matter much to me, it's not like I've got many other national carrier options besides AT&T and Sprint, 'least not until T-Mobile finally decides to deploy 3G down here (it's taking them waayyy too long). So I'm alright w/Sprint as long as the service doesn't start outright sucking... I switched to Sprint from AT&T mostly for the EVO, got tired of waiting for AT&T to release a decent Android phone, and after they capped their data plans at 2GB there's no way I'd go back to them and start paying more for less minutes and less flexibility.
I used up 1GB of data on my first month with Sprint and I wasn't even doing anything particularly fancy, no video chat, no big downloads, no music streaming at all, no tethering, nada; just web browsing and viewing maybe half a dozen YouTube clips a week. I've also been using WiFi religiously while I'm at home (to preserve battery life). I could easily see myself blasting right past 2GB of usage once I start doing any (or all) of those things
exact same situation here. got tired of AT&T and their half-assed attempts at offering good phones and their customer service leaves you feeling they do the minimum required to get by. I switched for Sprint for the EVO and many references from people saying Sprint's customer service is good. So far I have no complaints besides the "$10 premium data charge" scam:
explainthefee.com
I was just told by a sprint rep today that we will not be getting 4G for sprint it will be a while before we receive 4G so people start complaining

Does your m8 get good signal reception on at&t ????

I have issues getting good signal with my m8 on at&t, anyone else ? Actually I"am on straight talk which uses at&t service.
Not sure if the bad signal is just my area or if its my phone.
I can get LTE when I"am out and about, and it shows good signal, but my data speeds are not really that great for LTE being maybe 8 to 15 mbps yeah its good but should be more according to most users.
I live in Ohio and have absolutely no signal indoors and if I go out to the road I can pick up some weak edge signal which is like scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as data.
I have heard from people at a local at&t store that at&t took over the last of the alltel towers and something about July, but no one seems to be able to tell me anything about my area, and at&t maps show I"am supposed to have good service here so I dont know if its their service or my phone.
And being on straight talk its not like they will be able to help me with signal issues as you might as well be talking to yourself than call their customer service, as they cant even help you with how to set up call forwarding as they say its not listed as a feature with straight talk, pretty sad yes lol.
Does anyone work for at&t that can tell me if I will be getting alltel towers working in my area ?
In Ohio from zip 44830 Fostoria starting a few miles north going out of town on state route 199 basically all the way to state route 6 there is basically no service on my m8 as all I show is edge this is like a 10 to 15 mile stretch of nothing. Now if you turn west on state route 6 then you get a little better then a few miles you get LTE coverage.
Hoping someone from at&t can clue me in on this area because my m8 just sucks for service and I"am supposed to have good coverage here according to the at&t coverage maps.

I have a T-Mobile M8 I have unlocked on Straight Talk AT&T and voice service is fine. My problem is that where my Nexus 5 kept 4g service I only have H+ or 3g. I have a feeling it's to do with the metal body of three phone, but I could be wrong.

Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Clevelander here, i do have similar slow connection issues as well with at&t in downtown. they told me that there is a problem in some towers

[Q] Sprint service with M8 - no voice or data with poor coverage

I'm having major problems with my new M8, my home is in a area were I receive fairly good signal were I get 3-4 bars but I'm unable to make calls or get data. I contacted Sprint and they sent me an Airrave for my home which appears to help but basically when ever I get into an area with poor coverage (2-3 antenna bars) thisM8 just craps out! Now the clincher is that in the same areas, my son's iPhone works fine, for example last week I was camping and while my M8 was useless as while it would pick up a signal, it couldn't text, make or receive calls while my son's iPhone (5s) had no problems so basically I just used his phone and stowed the M8 away.
I had the very same issue a year or two ago with my HTC EVO LTE, after complaining to Sprint they reprovisioned it and suddenly it worked fine until last month upgraded to the m8.
Is there any better rom or firmware that can help me with this? As long as it has a good strong signal, it's fine but unfortunately we're I live and travel to, Sprint's coverage is poor but still it's frustrating that it doesn't even seem to work roaming when it picks up other service towers as it warns me I'm roaming and addtional charges may be encurred. I have called Sprint and they deny there is any issue with their service yet all the Sprint stores in my area and the Sprint vendors strongly urged me to upgrade to the iPhone instead of an android phone as they all repeated the same story that in my area, Android phones don't work well and from what I have seen the are right.
Any words of advice or suggestions? I'm still in my grace period were I can return the phone, Sprint technical support is suggesting I return the phone as it might be defective which I might believe expect this one is doing the same as my prior until Sprint did something "special" to the old one which fixed it but now they claim it's not their problem.
In a nutshell, it comes to be a issue with the Android phone type as when this M8 won't work, other Sprint phones do such as iPhone and an older Kyocera flip phone which the Kyocera phone was the one I had to use to call Sprint as my M8 couldn't maintain a voice call connection longer than 10 to 20 seconds before it would drop the call.
I'm totally frustrated, any suggestions?

No one?
In searching I found reference in the Sprint user's forums about a issue of multi-band support causing this problem esp in areas were 4g LTE and 3G signal is marginal. The only solution held to any account is to turn off 4G LTE and reprovision the M8 which IMO is rather lame considering it's the top of the line HTC phone but given Sprint's marginal network that might be all that I can do.
Are there any ROM's that radio offer any relief from such?
Sprint's solution at least to provide some help was to send me Airrave which has helped at least at home in that I can at least make phone calls and texts.
Same problem
I'd like some insight on this issue too. I switched from a Galaxy note 3 to the M8 about a month ago, and ever since, my data and cell service is horrible. I never really had any issues with the Note. I have had to turn LTE off and just use 3g to be able to use it at all if I'm not on WIFI. It's pretty frustrating considering that I really like this phone, but I might have to go a different route if I can't get it fixed. My phone is rooted and has viper ROM on it and it didn't change a thing with the custom rom. I don't know what to do, but I'm about ready to jump ship. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Poor signal ?

Hey guys,
I have had a couple people complain that when I was talking with them with my Note 4, I was breaking up several times. I think I was home every time someone complained that I was breaking up.
This is my first phone ever with Verizon and so far the data signal has been flawless, always super fast. I am worried though that my radio signal on the phone isn't good, possibly a defective phone?
When I got into work this morning I left myself a 2 minute voicemail on my work phone and played it back to see if it was breaking up. I played it back and it was perfect.
Could my house just be a "bad spot" in the area? I'm in West Bend, about 30 minutes north of Milwaukee. My signal at home was about -101dbm and its about the same at work. If my signal/service is going to suck at home thats going to be pretty annoying.
Is there a number that I can call to update the towers? I know this helped on occasion when I still was with US Cellular.
PS. My wife got the exact same phone, I'll have to check to see what her signal strength is.
Thoughts?

Hello, I've moved your thread to Q&A as it's pretty clearly a question.
Thanks.
Do you have a case of any kind on your phone? If so, which one.
No case on my phone. So my wife just called me from home who also has a white note 4 and sure enough, the call dropped twice from her. When she is in the living room, it appears to be fine (I called from my work land line phone) but if she moves into our kitchen, the call starts breaking up.
My brother said my voice was breaking up too when I called him yesterday, also from my kitchen.
This makes it sound like its not the phone, but the signal in my area. This is troubling to me because we are in a town of 30k+ just 20 miles north of Milwaukee. We have never had a single call issue with US cellular or straight talk.
What should I do at this point?

When I first joined with Verizon, I was having a lot of issue with poor signal and dropped calls. I called them to complain, and they told me that I could either get out of my contract, or they'd give me a network extender. Because at home was the only place where I was having issues with the service, I opted for the network extender. The one that they gave me was refurbished, but it has worked fine for over two years.
Your mileage may vary, but calling them to complain is definitely worth a try.

That's exactly what I did. I told them that my 14 days is almost up and I want them to make a note on my account that if my signal doesn't improve at home, then I can cancel my service.
She did bring up a network extender but I said there is no way I'm paying for that. If they would be willing to give me one to use at home I would be ok with that.
So far I'm not happy with Verizon's coverage, which is funny, because that is what they are known for.
We have never had a single call reception issue when we had US cellular and Straight talk.

So they didn't give you the extender? They were very accommodating a couple of years ago when I called. They acted like they actually wanted to keep me. They were going to let me cancel AND keep the two S3s that I had just gotten. Before that, I had Sprint, and I'd have gone to two tin cans and string before I'd have spent another day with Sprint.
I used to live in Illinois, and aside from the area right near my house, the signal was pretty good. I'm in Colorado now, and Verizon out here is an entirely different story. LTE is a joke where I live. I get a decent signal, but download speeds are sometimes worse than 3g. There are only four communities out here with XLTE. I was considering going to TMob or ATT, so I asked some of my neighbors. They all said to stick with Verizon, so here I am.
They are going to have technical support first check the towers or something to that extent. She started a ticket for my complaint and are going to get back to me within 24-48 hours. If it doesn't improve, then we are going to talk about an extender. So far the only reception issues that I appear to be having is in my house.
Whats weird is the signal strength is the same at home as it is at work. I called my land line from my cell phone at work and left a 3 minute message of me babbling and not once did it ever break up. If the strength is the same, why is it cutting in and out and dropping calls at home?
Hopefully they can resolve this. They are going to give me an extender for free or I'm dropping them.
Sounds like a problem tower, or a tower that's too far away. Or a tower that's overly congested.
Well I hope they can fix it. Kind of ridiculous that I can't get a reliable signal in my own house in a town of 30k people.
Signal on mine is a little better than the S4. Call and text range is great.
I am happy with the signal overall.
I have noticed that people tend to not hear me at all when I have a call open to them
Alot of the times as I'm talking the opposite side keeps talking back words like "Hello, hello.. are you still there?" and all the while I can hear them perfectly. I swapped my Note 4 for a new one at the store and for a while I was good until today the samw thing happened again. Im beginning to worry that the antenna reception on this phone is not as good my old Galaxy S4.
Really hope it is just a software problem that can be corrected. I live in Finland and I have a non branded and non sim-locked Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
