i have the g3 vigor sprint (ls885) is there any way to get this phone to lollipop? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have tried to do some research already but i am not an expert at searching or this stuff in general and could not find any good info
would it be safe to try a cyanogen or lineage os made for the regular g3, or should i not bother?
i actually was messing around with some other stuff, and bricked my phone and already had to unbrick it. it is now factory reset and working fine. this is a backup phone and i really dont care if it gets bricked, i really want to try to get it to 5.0 or greater if at all possible.
ty for any help!

[Q] Preparing to root

Hello everyone, I am very new to all of this so please have patience with my noobness. I have heard of people rooting their devices, and flashing custom ROMs and what not. I really like the look of cyanogenmod, and the functionality it would bring to my locked up AT&T HTC One M8. I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708628 thread that seems like a pretty promising and easy method to achieve root, S-off, and an unlocked boot loader. I almost went through with it today, but I really wanted to be more prepared. I am most scared about bricking my phone while it is still on contract and being stuck without a phone until march when my contract expires.
Basically what I want to know is is it possible to brick your device just by chance? Say I followed a trusted guide, did everything down to the dot, is there still a chance that my device could get bricked just by chance?
Also what are things that I should avoid to prevent getting bricked? Any veteran tips for a newbie? Anyway, thank you for your patience and help!

I would spend more time searching and understanding the phone first...Yes you can have a $600 bricked phone. Rooting is not hard, but there are always risks. Educate yourself thoroughly first, then make a decision.

I agree with GalaxyNotes, though it is rare to brick your phone just from rooting, its possible. You are more likely to brick it trying to flash an incompatible rom or kernal. Also there is ALMOST always a way to repair your phone should you hard/soft brick it. Spend a little more time researching and if you have questions a long the way there are people here who will help you out.
That first root/unlock/flash is always to most agonizing. Like everyone said take your time. If you don't understand something just a little bit, ask. Also the best thing to do is get your system unlocked and custom recovery installed so you can get your current image backed up. That way you have a known good working copy of your current system and pretty much makes you brick-proof. I've downloaded and have all necessary files etc. to root my device but I'm waiting on my warranty period to end. I just don't want to deal with customer service if something happens to my phone and I'm unlocked. I've seen people have no problems and others all kinds of problems trying to get service after unlocking.
Good luck.
I would recommend not going to CM. Not that CM isn't great, it's just not that great on our phones. The general concensus is Sense > GPE > CM/AOSP. Of course it's not like this for all devices... It's just that HTC does a VERY good job with Sense. You just can't beat it's features and stability. I've gone the route of switching to AOSP and GPE, but always ended up going back because it just felt like it was lacking something. To each their own of course, but I just wanted to share my 2ยข.

[Q] Picking up the G3 Tomorrow (D852) How does one root and install TWRP on d852?

i can't seem to find much info on root/recovery for g3. i found a little bit about bump and stump.... saying that twrp is possible but not much hard reliable facts on the topic.
Can someone who knows what they are talking about or knows a link to someone who knows what they're talking about help me get informed?
Basically i just want to know the procedure, how reliable it is (what are the chances of bricking the device), and any other relevant info that may be available. Any help is greatly appreciated and i'll be looking forward to developing some themes for this phone .
Thanks,
KS
*edit* also wondering if anyone has tried backing up a rooted version of the stock rom and restoring it. Does this work? Or do you have to flash kdz to return to stock after trying out some custom roms?

Question Concerning LG G4

Hey guy, sorry if this is going to be a bit of a noob question but please try and bear with me. In lieu of the recent nexus 5x which i found to be a huge disappointment I decided to pick myself up an lg g4. I'm not the biggest fan of the stock lg Rom and immediately looked for Cyanaogenmod.
I know that no stable build has yet been release for this phone yet and that i just need to have some patience, but I have some questions regardless. I'm wondering if there is a difference between root and an install of cyanogenmod. By this i mean that there are certain installer which will complete the process for you without you having to do any rooting yourself. If i understand correctly the phone is still being rooted but just by a program. My question is, is it only this latter feature that is not yet available for my phone. Like, if I were to root it myself would I then be able to install a cyanogenmod ROM. Or is it that there is not yet any compatible ROM for my device. If it is of any help I have the LG-H812 version of the phone.
Also, I recently saw a video on the XDA developers YouTube channel where it was discussed how TWRP is now available for the G4. what exactly does this mean and is it something that I would want.
Thank you very much for putting up with me.
Sounds like you need to do a bit more research before you do anything. I don't think TWRP is available for your model at the moment, which rules out custom roms/cyanogenmod. You just have to be patient and hope TWRP becomes available, then wait for a stable rom to come along. Or trade/sell your H812 for the international H815 (careful there are a few variants of the H815).

He's right man you Really should start hammering google especially with a more technically involved root with our g4s. No matter what anyone tells you TWRP or another custom recovery is the number one absolute most important thing to do with any root and immediately after you root before you make any modifications beyond normal app installs whatsoever. Custom recovery is what is going to save your ass in a bootloop or brick situation where you cannot get to the OS or even get a response from the device. As long as you have a backup in storage, you can use hardware key combos to enter TWRP and wipe the system and the problem and reflash the backup. Recovery is completely separate from the Rom that's how you can get around a total Rom disaster when nothing else works. The main reason there's no Roms for them yet is cuz only that one variant's bootloader can be unlocked which is required in most devices to flash a Rom or recovery and the reason that even with my capabilities I won't even bother rooting my expensive ass main important phone I'm still paying for every month lol I just fulfill my flash addiction on an l70 on a daily basis and daily I get outta bootloop and bricks thanks to TWRP... The g3 is perfect for playing with and I'm considering buying a used one and o I recommend the same until the g4 is fully cracked......also CM only comes pretty rooted because it does the same thing as normal just by flashing supersu which is a breeze with TWRP also

Phone is not hard bricked otherwise it would not turn on at all, sounds like soft-brick and needs factory resetting.

It will wipe your phone as factory, so hopefully you have things backed up before this occurred

Help Installing Custom Recovery on LG G Pad 8.3

So i just got this tablet out of the blue, didnt realy expect it and its not something thats really needed but it could come in handy. I figured id mod the hell out of it so it would be ready to go when i did decide to use it. I figured it being a name brand that doing all this would be easy. I havnt even looked into ROMs yet id figured id start with some custom recovery TWRP. Everything has been a complete disaster tho.
I had the thing for less than a few hours and done had it bricked and then about 10 more times after that. Ive been able to unbrick each time using the LG Flash Tool 2014 and a stock android 4.2.2 rom. I have the newer stock roms up to 5.?.? whitch is what i think was oroginal on it when i got it, but i figured downgrading would make everything easier. I still cant get anything to work right ive watched dozens of videos and posted and there so much crap out there its kinda hard to know what to use and to try, Were my particular tablet works into this time line.
Ive tried simple one click stuff that i think was the original tools. Ive tried the apps on the device. Ive tried hooking up to the pc. Using the command line on pc and on phone. Ive tried a million and one diffrent tools, programs, and files. My whole desktop is filled up with crap. The one thing i am able to do is root the drvice using kingroot but i beleave thats the one app you guys dont realy aprove of, but its so easy to use. I tried using some other root methods to see if that would help, but it didnt.
I read some were about the bootloader being locked and that being the problem, So i tried different things to unlock that but no luck. Then there was something about needing to downgrade the bootloader to the 4.?.? version or something, IDK. I am so lost any more idk were to go from here. I only get a new android device every few years because as long as it makes call i dont care and i dont tend on modding it all that much because theres the possibility i could be with out a phone for a few days. ive always been pretty good at modding stuff over the years but it just seems like android stuff just gets harder and harder over the years. Its starting to be more trouble then its worth but i guess thats the point. Ive always love doing this stuff but i just dont have the time like i use to spend all day looking this stuff up and getting stuff done but i just dont have the time to do that anymore. My eyes and back cant handle the hours starring down the keybored like they use to. Sometimes taking brakes screws up my concentration and it takes me a minute to get back on track.
Anywase like i said im kinda lost not sure were to go from here and i just figured id post and see if anybody would through me a line. If not well its cool ill figure it out eventually or just use it the way it is.
Dont have original info - I know I should have wrote everyhting down before diving in, but i didnt. This info is from the current stock ROM installed

Did i post this in the wrong place.
I encountered the same problem but i've solved it by downgrading the stock ROM because the recovery is locked with last version of stock ROM.
