Any way to test if my NFC reader is working properly? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I think the NFC reader on my phone might not be working. I tried scanning some NFC toys on it, and no matter where I placed them all over the back and front of the phone, absolutely nothing happened. NFC IS on and enabled, but I get no response.
Is there any way I can check to see if the NFC hardware in my phone is working properly? Or has anyone else had this issue?

NFC is working usually but it does have a small zone where is working. Is the area of the headphone jack, in that small zone between the camera and headphone jack, maybe a little bit of center to the left.
I also use the NFC for various things and I discovered there is working good, the worst part is when you want to do payments to find where is working

You are not alone with this problem.
Check this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/nfc-reading-cards-t3372168
For me it never worked, too. But I don't need it, so it's not that important for me.
I already sent it to repair. They replaced some parts and it worked one time for me, but never again.

Yeah, I was looking through that post, but it seemed inconclusive. I do need NFC, but really want to make sure if it's a hardware problem first before I send it in for repair. I am not sure how to properly restore everything to a new phone exactly like it was if I do. Which is why I wanted to know if there was any decent way to test it first. Maybe a place I can get a cheap NFC sticker or some app that can test the hardware or something?

The "hardware" will be another phone with NFC, and the sticker can be an electronic passport or a credit card with "contactless" "(paywave)" option.

Thanks for this I was moving my yubi key all over but somehow didn't discover this spot, but you're right it does work near the camera as you describe. Previously I thought it was my OS Lineage, or hardware.

i drop my DHD and its wifi dead

yesterday i dropped my DHD, and i realized the wifi stop working. when i turn on the wifi at settings, it just said "error", and wont detect mac address.
thingkng it just rom acting abnormally, i just reflashed over, aaand.. it still the same. so i factory reset, and it still the same. so i came with a conclusion that the wifi hardware must be broken, so i gave a try to 'knock' it and it works!
so after a small knock again my wifi dead again..
i wonder if it possible to nudge the wifi module, but i dont know where the module located,
the service centre said, they had to replace the main board and cost $145, duh!
anybody had tried to work with wifi antenae?
happened to me two days ago
Check to make sure your battery cover is on properly and not loose. I'm pretty sure that is the wifi antenna.

i'm not sure the battery cap has anything to do with this, but i'm pretty sure the battery cap was snap properly.
yeah, i hope someone had the clue how to nudge the antena,
The wifi antenna sits in the battery door, it's the little metal clip you can see in the door when taking out the battery.
You can try to fix yours if it's broken, or buy a new one on Ebay.
Hope it helped.

It happened the same to me, I repalced the battery cover and still no WIFI.
I tried using an APK named "FXR WIFI Fix and rescue" it fixed it, but after a day it was unable to connect again.
Looks like it's time to change my dear DHD
Duh, is it so hard to try for yourselves before giving an useless advice?
I just tried wifi with removed battery cover and it's scanning without giving any error.
gampangingats, if you are using Sabsa, it's still possible that this is a ROM issue, happened to me a couple of times, but system restart (full) always fixed it.
Right. This is a royal mess here, with everyone giving different ideas.
First ensure that both covers (battery door & bottom SIM/SD Card cover).
Then try a rock stable ROM (BlackICE, or something CM7 based is always good)
Then try the rooted stock ROM (search for it, its here somewhere)
Report back once you've done all that..

[Q] water damage, no sim card but *all* else works

Hi everybody,
(TL;DR at the bottom)
I would like to know what your experiences are with the following scenario:
I dropped my phone in a pond, left it to dry, did the rice thing, waited a whopping two weeks, very lightly scrubbed the reachable electrical contacts with a small tool to clean off dirt (did not cause damage to the connectors).
What I'm seeing now is quite strange:
Everything works, down to the compass, the gyro-stuff (I know, not a gyro but you get my drift), touchscreen, lighting, wifi, bluetooth, gps, the battery, the microSD card, basically everything you'd expect to break is working like a charm... except for the recognition of a SIM card. I can type the special commands in the dialer to obtain the test menu (and in doing so, using logcat, seeing no errors whatsoever while testing it, other than 'no sim card detected'), the phone still reports the same IMEI number, etc. It just says no SIM-card.
I tried to clean it up real nice on the inside (not the in-inside but the visible parts when you remove the antenna cover and battery cover) and saw no visible water damage even though it was completely submerged for well above 3 seconds. There was no visible residue as a typical drying process would normally show. I used a clean cloth and a host of very small tools to make sure I could clean all the small contacts and such. Remember, the SIM-card issue existed before the semi-more-than-thorough cleaning too.
I then proceeded to flash a new ROM, full wipe et al, formatted the sdcard just to be sure, I basically redid it as if someone would ask me to do it for them: in the most clean and surefire way possible. (no forgetting to full wipe, etc). I retested everything but came up with the very same issue. So I'm pretty sure it is hardware-related, I'm just not sure in which way.
Is it possible that I am looking at a physical deformation of some contacts which make the card 'not connected' when inserted? I saw a post in the forums about someone having the same issue, stating it was deemed to be the SIM slot being enlarged which was fixed using a small piece of paper, but I want to know if anybody has any experience with this kind of thing or happened to have come across the same situation.
For those of you with fewer time (aka TL;DR): phone dropped in water, dried it, cleaned it, booted it, all works except sim card detection, is that likely to be hw issue and if so any ideas?
Many thanks in advance for your opinions on this matter,
sstm

Seems to me that on a DHD there is an actual gap in the simcard cover & its the most likely place for water to enter the workings its extremely likely that the sim contacts were shorted & caused hardware damage.

Hi,
Yes, I forgot to mention that. I have tried with SIM-cards that work in other phones. None get detected.
Kind regards,

When you say that the SIM contacts were shorted, can you tell me if there would be a solution for that, other than turning it in for repairs?
If the only thing I can do is turn it in for repairs I should change my question:
How much will this cost me? (on average) Am I looking at 50$ or more like 100$ or even more?
Kind regards,
sstm
Without a circuit diagram i would just be guessing which parts would need replacing & repairers will likely immediately turn away fluid damage as a non starter.
I think the phone is most likely not going to be financially viable as I'm fairly sure next stop after the sim holder is the mainboard.
Hi Pat,
Thanks for your reply, unfortunately for me, I believe it is in the line of what I was thinking too
Would it be a good idea to sell it for parts? Or maybe to sell the parts separately?
I never did that, but I'd like to at least get some money for this device, even if it isn't that much
Kind regards,
sstm
Well its a coincidence because i have a mother of 84yrs who has an old Nokia & no computer. She doesn't want a complex phone & likes her old Nokia push button phone but it has no sd memory.
But she asked me about a camera that she could take family pics & video & digitally store them. Something like your phone might be ideal.
A new main board is about $50. You could try replacing it yourself or have a reputable company replace it for you for about an additional $100 dollars maybe. Not sure exactly what someone will charge.

Here's the part you need on eBay.
Check out this item I found on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=270946674338
It's a very easy repair. I had the same problem your experiencing about 18 months ago. I repaired it myself and my phone is still working fine. Just be careful not to damage the volume flex cable (part of the main board) when you take the back housing off. Also, when you remove the damaged sim/sd tray you have to pull forcefully (but carefully) as it is lightly glued on.
Don't be daunted, it really is an easy repair.
Good luck.

[Q] I dropped my phone in a toilet, peed on it, and flushed it. She works, but...

I know, I know... there are plenty of threads regarding dropping your phone in the loo/water/rain, but none of them address the issue I'm having.
I put 'er in rice for over 24 hours and she does work, but with a few quirks:
The vibrate function barely works (it's weak and inconsistent)
The speaker randomly pops and makes a "shhhhh" noise when the phone is being used
The camera does not work
Now what I really only care about here is the camera. The first time I tried to use the camera it DID work, but then I tried the front-facing camera and... nada. Nothing. She's dead, Jim.
I'm wondering if there's a way to change it so either a) all camera apps default to the back camera, b) all camera apps do not recognize that there is a front-facing camera, or c) attempting to utilize the front-facing camera does not cause the app to crash and make reaching the back camera impossible. I figured doing a factory reset would accomplish this, and I am open to that if no other option is available, but I'd like to see what else I can do.
Thank you in advance!

Well I have a cousin that ran into the same problem. Since insurance didn't cover water damage, he bought a replacement off Craigslist that had a cracked screen. It was cheap but he was able to use it for replacement parts.

I got an S3 in January that got ran over by like 400 cars a couple weeks ago (I'm so good at keeping my devices safe, aren't I?) so I just bought this replacement. I can't find any broken ones on CL, and my destroyed S3 sold for $122.50 on eBay. I'm not willing to shell out that much just to have a working camera. Perhaps I could sell this one as-is and just buy a replacement on CL? I'm not sure I care that much about it to go through the hassle, hah.
I do have an S2 that isn't working, so maybe I could swap the camera out of that one? I don't know much regarding the hardware differences between the two devices.
You can buy a new *speaker* from amazon. The are like $20-$30 and easy to install (no soldering and only 2 screws). Also I'd pull the bat out and rub the phone up and down with rubbing alcohol.
The speaker comes with a new modem and headphone socket.

[Q] NFC not working

A few months back, NFC stopped working on my Note II. I have programmed a number of NFC tags in the past and used them on a daily basis. There's an NFC tag on my car phone mount that automatically starts up Car Home Ultra, turns on Bluetooth, turns off WiFi, etc. Just suddenly stopped working. NFC is, of course, enabled in the settings.
At the time, I was running a stock 4.3 MK4 ROM, rooted. I've since used CM11 and just a few days ago installed Community ROM 3.2+ (4.4.2, NE2 modem). Neither of them worked, which leads me to believe it's a hardware, not software, problem. It's my understanding that the NFC chip on this device is embedded in the battery cover, and is connected via the two round copper conductors. I've ensured that they are clean, etc., still no joy.
Can anyone offer any words of wisdom?

Well if it is not working on any rom then it is most likely a hardware issue. The chip is in the back cover. If you know anyone who has a N2 maybe they will let you try using their back to test. If it turns out to be the nfc chip then it is not very expensive to replace.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I DO know someone that's near the Jersey Village area of Houston, and I owe that gentleman a few beers (hint, hint).
I found this on eBay. Judging from the 3M logo I see in the second photo, I would assume that the NFC antenna is simply held onto the back cover with adhesive. So replacing it is simply heat, pry, peel, and stick? I'd pay $4.29 to try it out. I'm nearly certain that's my problem.
I will be back Tuesday and available Wednesday.

Zenfone 3 Deluixe 5.7 owners - please confirm?

Conflicting reports in regards to NFC on the higher-end Deluxe models. GSM Arena reports it's available, PDAdb, which i believe is more reliable doesn't even mention 'NFC'.
I believe this VERY common feature has been 'avoided' in this phone, absolutely foolish by ASUS as it's keeping me away from this phone. Can someone please confirm? Anyone know why this decision was made despite the fact they have the 5.5", 5.7" deluxe variants and the ULTRA, which isn't much better?
Thanks
RoOSTA
It is available BUT it is in the very top of the phone.
Most phones use the battery and have NFC centered around the middle of the back. The ASUS Zenfone 3 deluxe, and the ZTE Axon 7, have it at the top of the phone, around where the speaker is located.
I don't know WHY it was put there but I eventually found it with a bit of hair pulling...
Somethings need to be the top part of the back but you can also use the very top of the phone too. A little annoying as this isn't very well explained...
NFC sensor is on the front near the top of the screen.
Yes, it have NFC, in te top of the phone near the call's speaker
I used it all days with some nfc tags.
An awkward location to put the NFC. You cannot see the screen when it is contacting the other device.

Hey, so I sometimes get the NFC to work (unlike my zenfone 2) bit when I tap to send / beam a picture it goes to Google play and tries to install the gallery app. Anyone know how to send the picture instead?

I get NCF to work.. Did not realize the chip was in a different location than model 2. Model 2 is rooted and can send pics via beam with no problem. Version 3 when I try to beam tries to install the app. Don't need wise ass comments. Joined XDA for "real" advice. If I need bull**** comments, remarks, etc I would have just posted on ****ty websites. Real question for real answers. If you have nothing else to do shut the **** up

The NFC is located at the top of the phone. You could "image" it's using the 3.5mm jack as the center of antenna. (Although it's actually there..)
I use the NFC function almost daily for payment (for convenience store purchase as well as subway ride) and it works 100% of time. (never second time touch) The way I use it is screen facing me, only the very top of phone (basically where the 3.5mm jack is located) is touching the payment terminal reception pad.
Most of the payment terminal will even accept the phone lying flat, LCD up as long as the 3.5mm jack is located near center of the payment terminal's reception pad.
The reason why NFC is located at top of phone is that the back of this phone is made by one piece of metal. NFC signal will have trouble pass this metal barrier. Beside, I found it's easier to use as NFC is at top since can hold the phone 45 degrees (LCD facing me) instead stick the back of the phone flat to the payment terminal when making payment.
Also, the screen is not needed to be on when making payment (YMMV, may depend on APP). The sensitivity of NFC is even better then my cashless credit card. (I tested both at same terminal).

Thanks for the info. One of the downsides of the body design I guess... Good to see its working for you and there's a way around it. I would've gone for this phone had root been available on it by now. Lack of IR is something I don't use all the time, but still find it important and am using on my V20...
