HTC One m8 hide root - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
First of all I'm new here. I have recently rooted and installed Lineage OS on my HTC One m8. I have noticed that one of my apps (Adidas Confirmed) does not support rooted devices. Therefore I just tried (15 min ago) to flash SUhide on my phone. This resulted in a boot-loop and I therefore had to restore my device. Is there any other way to hide the fact that my device is rooted? As far as I know Xposed framework isn't out yet for Android 7.0 and I can't get Cydia substrate to work with root cloak. Btw I have S-off (not sure if this makes a difference to why the methods I have tried didn't work or not. Just wanted to mention)
Thanks in advance!

There's no Xposed Framework for Nougat. Maybe he can try to use Magisk. Magisk has option to hide the root.

Thanks! I'll try it out. Btw I can see you have S-off. Should I do that too for my m8?

No, you don't need to. S-OFF is giving you more permissions, like to flash h/k mod on sense rom or to flash firmware easily.

I cannot give you a definative answer concerning your ROM mut I too have a rooted HTC One (M8). Post rooting I tried various ROMs from Cyanogen mod but none of these were very up-to-date for long and Android has been quite vulnerable since most manufacturers take an expediant and cynical view when it comes to supporting non-cutting edge hardware (HTC was one of the worst) and supplying security patches. I should add I try to avoid Google and the big social media platforms because I am not prepared to trade privacy (hand over personal data) for the sake of functionality. So, I have been using Moke ROM - MK60.1 Android security patch 1 April 2017. I tried usin MK71 Nightly OTA release but found them unstable - they lost dialer and network functionality after 24 hours. This is where my comments become more relevant. I have several proprietry UK banking apps installed including FinTek ones. None of them is supposed to instal on a rooted device, not at least without saying 'rooted - no go'. Under settings, developer options root access is controlled. The options are: Disabled Apps only ADB only Apps and ADB. None of the Fintek apps function but the main legacy bank app does even though it is not supposed to. In conclusion it seems to be that the app has code capable of interrogating the phone OS and detecting rooted status. Depending on the quality of the program it may correctly determin rooted status, or not. It is highly unlikely there is any intervention available to the rooter to combat this.

Thanks for the reply! In the meantime, I have bought a Samsung galaxy s8 and put my HTC One m8 on a shelf. However, I remember that I managed to solve the issue somehow through Magisk and their "hide root function". It may have been because of an update to the Adidas app or a Magisk update, I am not sure. Hope this was somewhat helpful

Magisk is indeed a solution. It's been updated to (currently) hide root successfully from Safety Net. Although Google may update it again, and break the hide function. So the cat and mouse game goes on. But so far topjohnwu is aggressively keeping Magisk updated to bypass Safety Net.
Apps may use other methods to detect root besides Safety Net. But Safety Net is probably the most common method. Magisk works for me, in hiding root from Netflix and banking apps on my current device (OnePlus 3T).
More recent versions of SuperSU also have a function to hide root (current version is 2.82). I personally haven't tried it. But reports I've read are positive.
Xposed is a no-go, as far as I know. It inherently breaks SafetyNet. So whatever means the Xposed module used before to hide root, won't work now. Again, AFAIK (haven't personally tried, and not really an xposed user).
Also note that some custom ROMs may also trip Safety Net. And if so, there is nothing the Magisk Hide and SuperSU hide function can do about that. But I think this does not apply to Lineage (hide still works).

Hey Guys,
Thank you for any help you may provide in advance, and please know I did a proper search before posting this.
I am currently using Malaysk firmware (April release) and have I am very happy with such a dev.
However there is one thing I would like to do; I would like to completely remove the Xposed framework and any trace remaining of it. (I already uninstalled the framework using the app)
This is due to the fact that the current app of my tv provider gets blocked when it discovers this and I would love to have this functionality back.
Could someone point me in the right direction on this topic?
Thx Again,
Gtrz Ecniv
Did it work before on an older version of Malaysk ROM? There are xposed apps that can prevent apps from seeing a modified system like Root Cloak there was one that you could type in specific modifications not sure the name though. Does a rooted device have a conflict with your app? there are apps that disable certain features or all if root is detected. I'm not sure where Xposed is located on the storage but a simple search in ES File Explorer might find it for you.
Hey bsavoir22,
Thx for the input, to be honest I can`t remember if I ever had it working on a Malaysk ROM however I do know what you are talking about; The Irdetto fix. Unfortunately I have tried and tested that and it won`t work I did have it running on a rooted previous firmware though (Non-Malaysk, rooted Stock GS firmware) in combination with root cloak that`s why I`m suspecting the Xposed framework.
That`s why I am interested in trying to remove the framework entirely as I love the ROMs made by Malaysk really would like all functionality back that I had on my old firmware.:good:

I've been a member since my first ever android device, HTC Wildfire Mini. I've rooted and installed custom ROMs since back then. Ever since grabbing my self a Pixel device I felt all my needs were catered for, until now.
I miss managing my standby time battery using Greenify and a custom kernel. Not that I don't get great standby time on my phone currently but I feel the itch to get tweaking again. haha oh I miss Viper4Android
I was wondering:
1. Can I still have root access and use Google Pay/mobile banking apps?
2. Xposed framework, is that still a thing? haha I used to love those little tweaks.
3. ROMs, what's everyone using?
4. I've not used Magisk before, can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,

Welcome Back!
1. Yes, google pay and most banking apps work but I believe it depends on what bank you use. (I use Chase)
2. Xposed is questionable at best for the moment, at least for Pie. It's still in beta for 8.1 and, as far as I know, Rovo89 hasn't mentioned any development in that regard
3. Personally, I prefer stock. I use elemental kernel, magisk modules and substratum.
4. Magisk is simple enough to use, but some have had issues since Pie. To get a general idea of how magisk works, start here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/development/2017-11-6-root-pixel-2-xl-t3701176

1. I personally don't use any banking apps for making payments but from doing some reading it seems most will work as long as you don't have the Xposed framework installed.
2. It is a thing up to Oreo. It is still in beta for Oreo, however when I used it I had no issues. It felt stable as far as I'm concerned. However, it did slow down my device a bit and I also found alternate apps for the Xposed mods I used.
3. I'm on Liquid Remix and I love it! HavocOS is really great too. I've been a long time Flash kernel user, but now that is EOL. I have now switched to Kirisakura.
4. You just need to download the Magisk zip from the official thread and flash it in recovery. After you reboot you'll see the Magisk Manager app and it's pretty straightforward and self-explanatory at that point!

Possible to get an Ambient Display working on the Oneplus 3?

Back before i came back to Oxygen OS for the release of Pie, i used various other roms that had supported a Always On Display. since coming back i have missed that feature. i was wondering if theres a way to get a Always On Display working with or without root as i am currently rooted.
- I am both rooted and have magisk installed so feel free to reply with rooted methods/magisk modules. -

Always On AMOLED is probably your best bet:

This question has already been answered in the OP forums:

Yeah i have tried it, however it does have a issue which at least for me is a deal breaker
-Unlocking the phone using my fingerprint instead results in what seems to be the app closing

What apps do I lose on root?

I couldn`t find some kind of list of which apps I lose access to if I root the Note 10/10+.
The last android fone i had was in android 4.4, so its been a long time.
I want to root, but it would be nice to know the apps that i can't use if i rooted.
Thanks.
Secure folder, Samsung pay and any app that makes use of knox
Most other apps can be made to work with tweaks

Most important question you should ask , What do i gain by rooting ? ad blocking ? system ui theming ? all of these things can done without rooting but if you are using exynos version you will get most of lost functionality by going custom rom route.

If you want just root + Stock ROM
- Secure folder
- Samsung Pay
- Samsung Pass
- Samsung Health
- Google Pay - There are some workaroun, search XDA
- Many banking and other app but should be fixed with magisk hide
but I believe those app can be run if you reboot to device without root.
From above many things can be fixed with some patch like
- Secure folder can work
- Samsung health can work
- Samsung Pay can be used with Gear watch
only samsung pass won't work but you can use Google's auto fill option instead.
Good to know all these things. I decided to root it when it arrives. Thank you.

Is rooting difficult and is it really worth rooting? Isnt it possible to mess up your phone / void warranty? Seems like a big risk just for a little customization

Yes it is worth rooting in any aspect.
Rooting is not "little customization" rather then deep changes "under the hub" and "risk" is only for those who doesn't know why and what to do with rooted device.
And warranty ?...Really, due to "effective" Samsung "support"...who cares about warranty...

Anyone still using the Pixel 2XL?

The forums here seem dead with very little activity. Understandable as most people have moved on from an old phone.
But this phone IMO still holds up very well. Would be great to see more people here.
I’ve never used a 2XL personally, but those older Pixels seem to be great (even as daily drivers). There are also custom ROMs (PixelExperience) that are pretty good.
Very satisfied with taimen as my daily driver.
I think the activity on XDA has declined in general. Both because fewer people play with custom roms. And because they use other ways to communicate e.g. Telegram.
I rooted and used custom rom's on almost every phone I owned including Nexus line, but stopped that when I bought a Pixel as it just didn't seem needed.
So my 2XL is still on Android 11. When 12/13 came out I didn't bother. But now I'd like to install a custom rom and get 13 and 14, as I looked at new phones and realized not much has changed except software.
But there's so much less traffic here now, and things have changed and I'm confused - slot a/b, much more complicated steps to flash, no custom kernels etc.

I'm using ArrowOS (Android 12), but it hasn't been updated since November, so it's not really worth installing it now. I plan to try crDroid once I overcome my laziness...

does safetynet/google pay work?
No. It used to work, but then Google updated SafetyNet, so all old roms fail. It should work on most new roms, though. Or if you install Magisk and extra hiding.
BTW, most new roms require repartitioning, so more complicated installation (and you lose ~5 GB). I believe LineageOS is without repartitioning, even the unofficial one that passes SafetyNet.

Yes, Lineage OS 20 Official with Android 13 works very well on my Pixel 2XL which I have rooted with Magisk allowing me to tightly control battery charging. This has greatly extended battery life.

interesting.
Do you mean stopping the charge when it reaches 80% etc? is that why you rooted?
I thought root wasnt really needed and you have to use complicated steps like hide etc to pass safetynet. So without root Lineage will not pass right?

My P2XL is no longer my daily driver. However, I don't use anything complicated to pass safetynet on it. Root is required as passing the safetynet checks is not possible otherwise. Outside of that I only need the Displax (sp?) mod version of Kdragon's Universal Safetynet Fix to pass the device and basic integrity checks so I could use Google Pay. Note that passing strong integrity is not possible at all, even if you don't root and lock the bootloader. From my testing only a stock ROM can pass strong integrity.
Used it until I upgraded to a Samsung galaxy S9 a few weeks ago.
Using Crdroid on both devices

What I was told in the other custom rom threads is that SafetyNet will pass without root? I'm not sure now as I also read that root is needed.

I think SafetyNet is still supported for another year at least which is when they will deprecate it.

To pass SafetyNet, the bootloader must appear to be locked. The "fix" module makes it look that way. Probably fakes other stats as well.
To run the fix module, root using Magisk is needed. However, it is possible for the rom developer to include the same mechanisms directly in the rom, and in that case, you don't need Magisk or the module.
You are correct that SafetyNet is going away, though it will happen already in June. It is replaced by Play Integrity. However, that is just a new API for the apps that want to check the phone. The underlying detection is the same, and the same workarounds apply.
The thing that will make faking SafetyNet/Play Integrity impossible is hardware attestation.
Currently, the "fix" module makes the phone claim that hardware attestation isn't possible, just as it isn't possible on phones with too old hardware.
AFAIK, no app yet requires that, because it would also make it unable to run on old phones. But that is likely to change gradually in the future.
