Stuck in TWRP after attempting to root - Pixel C Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been following this guide:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pi...p-flashable-monthly-update-zip-pixel-t3375591
to try and root my Pixel C. I was initially following a different guide, but I believe I now have:
bootloader-dragon-google_smaug.7900.50.0.img and TWRP_dragon_3.1.0-2.img, loaded through fastboot
I was then able to push
Update.ZIP_PixelC_Ryu_system-vendor-boot_OPP1.zip and SuperSU-v2.79-201612051815.zip to /sdcard/ via adb in TWRP. I then tried to install both, as per the guide.
I was a bit confused when the "flashing system.img... this will take some time" part took no time at all, but it had taken a while to get to that point so I figured maybe the messages were in the wrong order or something. Both said they were successful.
Tried booting to system - just came back to TWRP.
So I thought I'd try to flash the system image back on. But I can't push any files now. Everytime I try, it creates the files then fails and I start getting read-only file system errors
If I try to install update.zip again (the one above), I now get "failed to mount '/data-full' (Device or resource busy)"
So I'm quite stuck at this point. Can't revert to stock image, can't install the new image... any help would be much appreciated!

I would do the following:
Download the full factory image from here. If you want to keep all of your data extract the zip and remove "-w" from flash_all.bat or flash_all.sh (depending on your OS).
If you keep -w it wipes your settings.
Boot into fastboot and run flash_all.
It will write all data from the factory image to your device and it should boot into android again.
If your tablet is up and running you can download twrp and flash it again on your tablet.
I always flash twrp like this:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
fastboot boot twrp.img
if i boot into twrp it asks for a decryption-pass. I skip this and go directly to reboot and reboot into recovery. Now i will not be asked for a password and can go on flashing the latest supersu.

I second this ^ except for the fastboot boot twrp.img part. Why do you do that? The first line should be enough.

Reverting to stock issue

Hey ,I have been around the forum and not only for trying to find a way to get back to stock. What I did was I used my Nandroids boot.img and recovery.img and the phone started normally on 4.1.1 as it was when I backed it up. But when I downloaded OTA and tried to install I had the internalstorage issue ,I tried extracting it manually from Downloads app and at it stucks with the note that "This file is corrupted". I then installed another recovery named -endeavoru.recovery.signed.img and when I try to get into recovery a red exlamation mark appears .And checking for software updated says that I am running newest version of android.. Help will be much appreciated
Thanks

You can try downloading latest ruu and extracting boot.img and system.img from there, here's the instructions https: //sites.google.com/site/ androidbyyorzua/home/tutorials/extracting-rom-files-from-htc-ruu (remove spaces)
You have to flash them with fastboot

Full stock!
But within the boot loader you will always see the Information "RELOCKED"
Currently it is not possible to remove this because there would be S-OFF required.

Do not listen to this guy, wrong guide. This will soft brick your phone (stuck at bootloop). After flashing rom.zip you have to flash unlocktocken in order to flash recovery and wipe cache and factory reset. AND DO NOT flash CWM or TWRP recovery as they will soft brick your phone giving you error while reverting system while restoring nandroid backup, instead flash the recovery located in the nandroid back up!

[Q] How to restore back to factory settings after using towel root

I have rooted my device using towel root which doesn't unlock the boot loader. I then used the twrp manager to install custom recovery. I am wondering how to restore everything back to factory as all the tutorials I have seen so far require an unlocked boot loader. Any help will be appreciated, thank you.

If I download a stock image from google and flash it from my nexus 7 using twrp will everything be restored to factory settings?
If the boot loader is locked does that mean I can just do a normal factory reset on the device and it will remove the recovery and root?

Would you mind finding a link for me ? I have never encountered this before as I have always unlocked the bootloader to root but this time I used towel root which was different as explained above.
Doesn't the boot loader have to be unlocked to flash a ROM via adb?
try this and press thanks

nope,
Step 1: Download the ADB/Fastboot files and the
USB drivers for Windows based PC first. The the
latest factory image for your Nexus device can be
downloaded directly from Google’s website .
ADB/Fastboot – Mac , Windows
USB drivers for Windows
Extract the contents of the ADB/Fastboot ZIP file
inside a new folder called ‘google’ on your desktop.
Extract and transfer the contents of the factory
image inside this folder as well. The list of files will
include a ZIP file containing the codename of your
Android device, two files with “flash-all” names, and
a bootloader image file. All the extracted contents of
the factory image should be inside the same folder
as the ADB and Fastboot file, otherwise you will get
a file not found error.
Make sure to install the ADB drivers as well if you
are running a Windows based PC.
Step 2: Now, reboot your Nexus device in bootloader
mode. This is usually done by switching off the
device, and pressing the Volume down + Volume Up
+ Power button simultaneously. If that does not
work, try the Volume down + Power button
combination.
After the device has booted into bootloader mode,
connect it to your PC.
Step 3: Open a new Terminal or Command Prompt
window, and navigate to the ‘google’ folder that you
created in Step 1. Before we start flashing the
factory image, we need to make sure that your
Nexus device is being detected by the PC.
fastboot devices
If you are using a Mac, then you need to prefix a “./”
before every Fastboot command. So, the above
command will look something like this on a Mac -:
./fastboot devices
The above command should confirm if your device is
indeed being detected by your PC or not. If it is,
then proceed to the steps below. If not, repeat the
steps above again. Make sure that you have properly
installed the drivers and are inside the correct
folder.
If you are running Windows, copy-paste the following
command in the command prompt window -:
flash-all.bat
On a Mac, copy-paste the following command -:
./flash-all.sh
The script will then automatically flash the full
factory image on your Nexus device. Once the
factory image has been flashed, your device will
automatically reboot. Keep in mind that the first boot
might take some time so please be patient.
If the flash-all.sh script gives you a fastboot not
found error on your Mac, open up the file in Text Edit
and add a “./” before every fastboot command.
The flash-all script included in the factory image
might not work for all. It has always been pretty
unreliable and has only worked once for me in the
last 2 years. If you are in the same boat as me, you
will have to flash each partition manually on your
device. This is slightly cumbersome though.
The command to manually flash a partition via
fastboot is “fastboot flash partition filename.img”. In
the factory image that you extracted in Step 1, you
will notice there is another ZIP file. Extract the
contents of that ZIP file inside the ‘google’ folder.
Now, its time to manually flash the partitions to your
Nexus device. We will first begin with the bootloader.
fastboot flash bootloader filename.img
Then, we will flash all other partitions. They don’t
necessarily need to be in the same order as I have
listed them below. The names of the image files in
the factory image will clearly indicate the partition
they are intended for as well.
fastboot flash boot filename.img
fastboot flash radio filename.img
fastboot flash recovery filename.img
fastboot flash userdata filename.img
fastboot flash system filename.img
Thank you very much I will try this today.
I couldn't flash all and when I flashed the bootloader it came up with failed bootloader is locked?
Enter this command to unlock the bootloader:
fastboot oem unlock
After unlocking, you can run flash-all.bat (or run manual fastboot commands to flash).

Attempting to root and install a custom ROM (DU), where am I going wrong?

Hey guys, as the title states, I'm struggling to install a custom ROM on my Nexus 5X, and I was hoping you guys could read what I did and tell me where I'm going wrong. This is my first time rooting via fastboot commands as whenever I try to root via NRT, SuperSU doesn't flash.
I've had a few failed attempts where my phone has been stuck in bootloop and I've flashed stock using Nexus Root Toolkit. I'll list what I do when trying to root, and if you could tell me where I'm going wrong, that'd be brilliant.
- My first step was to install stock (build number: MTC19T) via NRT
- Connect to the device via fastboot
- Bootloader is already unlocked so I don't bother with that
- Download SuperSU 2.74 in the phone
- Flash over a modified boot.img (found one for my build number on XDA by Tigerstown) via the fastboot commands
***I did this because when I tried to install the SuperSU zip from TWRP 3.0.2, my phone would reboot halfway through the flash and not root***
- Flash over the custom recovery (TWRP 3.0.2 for bullhead)
- Enter recovery from the bootloader
- Install SuperSU via TWRP
- Reboot the phone
- Check if I have root via a Root Checker app in the Play Store
***This part usually goes fine, I've tried it without the boot.img, but TWRP keeps rebooting the system when I try flashing SuperSU***
- Once my phone is rooted, I download Dirty Unicorns 6.0.1 and Banks Dynamic GApps to my phone (I've got these 2 downloaded to my laptop and I just transfer them over to my phone)
- I go back into recovery, I wipe the system (but not internal storage)
- Go to install in TWRP and try to install DU 6.0.1
***My problem here is that TWRP reboots halfway through the installation. I can't flash GApps after the ROM. My phone takes a while to boot up, but when it does, I have DU 6.0.1 even though the installation in TWRP didn't finish***
- I then go back into recovery to install GApps, but the same thing happens to TWRP, it freezes for a second and then reboots my phone.
***However, unlike DU, my GApps won't install. I've tried different a GApps package (Opengapps) but TWRP does the same thing every time***
To summarize, after I root and flash my ROM, I'm left with DU with no GApps. The issue I seem to be having is with TWRP not flashing GApps and I've tried a different version of it but the same thing ends up happening, it freezes for a second and then reboots my phone. I've also tried using SuperSU 2.65 but the same thing happens.
I know this is a long read, but any help would be seriously appreciated!
I haven't heard of twrp rebooting halfway through a flashing sequence before so I'm going to guess that something is corrupted.
I'll try to help you out as much as I can here but if twrp continues to reboot during a flashing sequence I would try to RMA the device and get a new 5X.
Based off what you have typed it sounds like you already have adb access on your computer so I'm going to suggest that you completely wipe the device with these commands:
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase vendor
fastboot erase userdata
Reboot the device into bootloader mode and use this command:
fastboot format userdata <--- This is a must do so that twrp will mount data
Re-download the latest TWRP to make sure the one you have isn't corrupted and then flash it to the device using this command: fastboot flash recovery (name of twrp.img here)
Then flash the Cache.img and Vendor.img that is needed for the DU rom with these commands:
fastboot flash cache cache.img
fastboot flash vendor vendor.img
After the flashing is done boot into recovery mode and wipe the device using twrp. Reboot into recovery mode again. <---- this is a must do so that the other partitions will mount
Transfer the DU rom, Gapps, and SuperSU to the device and flash them while in twrp in this order:
1.) DU rom
2.) SuperSU
3.) Gapps
Reboot the device and you will have the DU with your choice of Gapps and root. Guaranteed.

First of all, just wanted to say thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I have a few questions (because I'm pretty new at rooting without NRT, so sorry for all these questions)
1) When I fastboot erase everything, is that basically getting rid of the Android OS from my device? If so, would I be able to recover it all by reflashing stock via NRT? (Just in case this goes horribly wrong)
2) What do you mean by adb access? Is that the terminal where you enter commands like "fastboot flash boot <boot.img>" after shift + right clicking on the explorer in windows? (I've been calling that fastboot access)
3) Where would I find the cache.img and vendor.img for DU? I've looked on the DU bullhead page but can't seem to find it.
4) When transferring files after I've flashed TWRP, would I have to sideload the ROM, SuperSU and GApps? I haven't been able to get the hang of that yet, they way I'm doing this is:
- opening the console command
- "adb usb"
- "adb devices"
- going into TWRP, advanced, sideload adb and swiping right
- "adb push <file>" ***not sure if this line is correct
My problem here is that when I swipe in my recovery, I seem to lose adb access. Am I doing this in the wrong order? Are there any other ways of sideloading?
Again, sorry for all the questions but I'm new at all of this and I really want root on my Nexus 5X.

1) yes

3) factory image zip found here
4) no, when you are in TWRP connect the phone to the computer you will get a window pop up that allows you to brows the internal storage of your device (sd card) you can freely move files back and fourth.
If you didn't execute "Fast boot Flash System 'system.img" not erase System Partition vis Recovery then no, it will not erase the system partition of the device.

Tried this method this morning, no luck though
Same thing kept happening, TWRP freezes for a second halfway through installing SuperSU (at extracting files) and then rebooting without root.
Gutted I can't get root on my phone
Since TWRP continues to reboot halfway through the flashing sequence I would recommend that you RMA the device and get a new 5X. There could possibly be a hardware failure occurring and with those it's best to try not to fix them yourself.

Are you accepting when TWRP offers to root the phone for you? Don't! That feature does not work on MM and I think they took it out in 3.0x
Download SuperSU from Chainfire's website, flash the zip in Twrp and then install the SuperSU app from Play

No, I can't even get to that stage. TWRP reboots whilst I'm trying to install SuperSU.
And by flashing the SuperSU zip, wouldn't I already have SuperSU on my phone? Why would I have to install it form the Play Store?
Anyways, I've given up on trying to root my 5X, like HesThatGuy said, my phone probably has some hardware issues and seeing as I bought my phone second hand, I can't replace it. So I'm just sticking with stock.
Thanks for the reply though mate :good:
Why in Matias Duarte's name are you rooting your phone before flashing a custom ROM? That is a massive waste of time and effort. DU is rooted. You dont need to root the stock ROM first.
First, redownload and fastboot flash TWRP. Redownload DU and the recommended GAPPS while you are at it. If you want to be unencrypted go to WIPE and select Format Data (this will nuke all photos, video, music, whatever on your phone. Back it up first). Don't reboot. Now plug your phone into your computer. Move DU and the GAPPS package you redownloaded to your phone. Wipe everything but internal storage. Add both DU and GAPPS to the flash queue. Flash those buggers. Enjoy.

Help, possibly bricked phone

Hello, I am currently rooted and on stock on pixel xl. I am trying to flash the pure nexus rom. I downloaded through the link in the op, factory reset and flashed through twrp (3.0.2rc1). When I went to reboot, it said OS not installed. Can anyone offer any assistance with this? Needless to say, I didn't reboot with that. I did however do a backup (of stock) prior to this. I decided to restore my backup but when it rebooted it said something about the vender image is not right with this system and to flash the correct image. This is exactly what its saying : Your vendor image does not match the system. Please flash the NOF27C vendor image for your device. I have managed to move the correct image file to the internal storage but from what i read, can only install through twrp.
And when it finished rebooting, now 90% of my apps are crashing, no fingerprint hardware, developer options are not available and I had to reboot back into recovery but its like twrp is gone, it looks like the stock recovery. Somehow it appears there are parts of my stock rom and pure nexus rom combined which is understandbly causing my issues. Right now I am trying to get back to having twrp but am stuck.
I have since tried to reinstall twrp but when I plug my xl into my pc, the pc recognizes it but no storage. I cant move a file from pc to xl because its saying disconnected or not responding. Tried to get a command prompt and when I shift/right click, there is no option. I don't know what else to do.
If anyone has any suggestions, please help. I am freaking over this. Can't use my phone in the state its in.
Sounds far from bricked.
Just entirely screwed up.
FASTboot the latest factory image and then refrain from tinkering for the weekend.
These are the steps i use.
I think a new ADB/FastBoot package was released yesterday you might want to install that.
Execute fastboot commands (assuming the bin is on your PATH)
fastboot flash bootloader c:\_PIXEL_XL_\bootloader.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio c:\_PIXEL_XL_\radio.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash boot_a c:\_PIXEL_XL_\boot.img
fastboot flash boot_b c:\_PIXEL_XL_\boot.img
fastboot flash system c:\_PIXEL_XL_\system.img
fastboot flash system_b c:\_PIXEL_XL_\system_other.img
fastboot flash vendor c:\_PIXEL_XL_\vendor.img
fastboot flash modem c:\_PIXEL_XL_\modem.img
fastboot reboot
To add TWRP and Root:

Reboot into the installed recovery

So today is the day (at least for me) that I want to try applying the Jan OTA to my Pixel 2 XL. I am currently using Magisk and ElementalX kernel and was wondering if anyone has tried this yet (I know, the OTA just came out)?
If someone has an idea on the process to do this please let me know.
Thanks!

Kernel, TWRP and Magisk get overwritten by the OTA. You need to reinstall.
Also I'd recommend to disable all Substratum themes before flashing - for me this led to a Bootpool...

I recommend using the full image (not OTA) downloaded from Google. Extract the files from the zip into your ADB folder, open up flash-all.bat with a text editor and remove the -w (wipe) switch from the script. Save. Then just execute that file from a fastboot prompt. You will not lose data or settings, but you will lose TWRP, kernel & Magisk. When the script finishes running, boot back into fastboot mode (bootloader) and from your PC, fastboot boot twrp. When it loads queue up (add zips) TWRP.zip, Kernel.zip, Magisk.zip and let her rip. Reboot to system and everything will be normal. Just make sure you have those three files (latest versions) on your phone AND the twrp.img on your PC so you can boot to it. Takes about 3 minutes if you have all the files in place before starting.

What's the difference between this step and sideloading the OTA?
Edit: nevermind. Realized you'd flash-all without the -w if you have TWRP.

Yes, OTA's fail to execute if you have modified the boot or system partition. An OTA is an incremental only update that selectively writes certain files and is (usually) much, much smaller. This is appropriate for a stock, unmodified device. Lots of people get tired of waiting for the OTA to come, and so they just update manually by sideloading the OTA through the stock recovery (over adb). Nothing wrong with that, and it this will sometimes bring a phone back from bootlooping or other serious problems like FC's and crashing.
A full image contains the full partition images and they are written to the device fully and unconditionally via fastboot. You can only flash a full image if your bootloader is unlocked. It essentially erases the partitions by overwriting the entire contents from beginning to end. Some would argue this more "complete" method is less likely to result in errors, or corrupt files. Removing the -w switch from the batch file script prevents the script from overwriting the userdata partition where all your media, user apps and settings are. Some call this "dirty" flashing.

Interesting that Google seems to claim that updating with the OTA should create less problems with this January update:

That article is quite dubious with no source about google confirming the issue :silly:

REALLY dumb question, but how do you execute a .bat from fastboot? Or do you mean with the phone in bootloader/fastboot mode, run the modified .bat?
EDIT: Never mind... put the phone in Bootloader/fastboot mode. Ran the modified .BAT from command prompt within the Platform-tools folder.
I did it last night with no issues. The process is pretty simple.
1) adb reboot bootloader
2) fastboot flash boot /location/of/december/boot.img
3) fastboot flash dtbo /location/of/december/dtbo.img
4) reboot
5) allow the OTA to install
6) adb reboot bootloader
7) fastboot boot twrp
8) install TWRP then custom kernel then Magisk
7) reboot

I like this idea better than the flash all, but forgive me as I haven't flashed any Android 8.1 devices yet.
Is dtbo the new name for what used to be called system?
