Concern over 32bit stock OS not 64bit OS on 64bit compatible processor. - Moto G5 Plus Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello friends,
I know many of you are OK with the fact that the stock OS is 32bit OS not 64bit OS ,but there may be guys like me who are not happy with this fact. FOA I wanna tell you that I really wanna use some apps which are only 64bit compatible(if u want name i can PM u) and due to the OS limitation I am unable to install and use these apps. I was new to moto g series and had a blind faith in Motorola thats y i purchased the device on first day of launch. Think yourself guys 4gb RAM nd snapdragon 625 are not enough to run a 64 bit OS? Yes it is infact it is more than capable to run 64 bit OS. Current OS is doing nothing more than limiting the functionality of snapdragon 625. Motorola people say 32 bit OS provide more power than 64 bit OS on 64bit chip, but thats not true qualcomm saying 625 is 64bit because it IS capable enough to run 64bit apps smoothly. Also you can visit here and here to see the performance comparison with redmi note 4, u will find that redmi note 4 is ahead in benchmarks even having heavily skinned MIUI and redmi note 4 uses a 64 bit OS. I even talked to a recognized developer here at XDA and he says ,"it's really unfortunate that motorola decided to go with 32bit OS. Snap 625 is more than capable of running 64bit OS".
Guys u can add weight here to my request for asking a real reason of not using 64 bit OS in g5 plus. Also i don't this RS 17000 is a small price.
Thanks

Again this question? Sorry, but I don't know why you're so obsessed with 64 OS

Yes it's possible but only if Motorola wants, No developer can make a full working 64bit rom for g5 plus because device specific binaries aren't available in 64 bit . ?

I believe they have done it so that 2gb versions won't get issues regarding low ram, and they didn't wanna build separate 64bit build for 3/4gb versions.
i think they could have gone with 3gb as minimum with 64bit os. 2gb is kinda low for a device like this.

2gb works fine on a device like this.

It's a budget device from a second tier (at best!) manufacturer. Yes, the SoC could handle it; yes, it'd probably be faster; yes, 64-bit longs/pointers wouldn't make a big difference in RAM usage when you have 4GB, but Lenovo just doesn't care. I own one too and would also prefer a 64-bit ROM, but...such is life.

The phone isn't fast enough to emulate GameCube anyway. The Galaxy S8 barely manages.

If it wasn't for this thread then I wouldn't have noticed this, all I can say is that it did mattered me till now as everything I use to install is supported and everything is snappy too. But I do understand that having a 32bit os is a letdown, those of you who are saying "it's okay" "why u need 64bit", just keep your mouth shut, I paid for the 64bit cpu for obviously running a 64bit os. There might be everything working fine till now but we do have a reason for an app to be unsupported on our devices. I had a device(yureka) with sd615 which I bought in 2014, it was amongst the first chipset to support 64bit yet it was on 32bit os as android 4.4 was the latest then and it was 32bit only, then with lollipop Android got full 64bit os and so our devices got an ota which updated our devices from 32bit to 64bit. This is just to point out that it's totally possible to upgrade this to 64bit if Lenovo thinks so. Thanks Lenovo for proving me that Motorola is dead as Motorola wouldn't have fooled it's customers like u Chinese company do, scammers.

No need to whine. Moto has always been an entry to mid level phone and you should have known that. If you want 64 bit OS then you need to set your sights higher. After owning 4 previous Moto G models I probably won't buy another. No just because of the OS but because I think the company is now run by a bunch of idiots that only looks to push out a sub-standard piece of hardware to the masses. Lenovo will eventually kill the Moto line and that's a shame.

I agree with everything u said except "If you want 64bit os then you need to set your sights higher". There's n number of devices(Redmi note 4/yureka) than cost half the price of Moto g5 plus and run 64bit android. It's just a matter of choice for manufacturers and going with the 64bit version doesn't add up the cost of device

I love when people who know nothing about what their talking about open their mouths. It makes zero difference if this phone is running a 32 or 64-bit OS. Seriously, ZERO difference. Every app on Android runs as it's own user and can address a 32-bit space of memory. So even if the phone had 6GB of ram, you could still use it all on a 32-bit OS. Just not all in one app. (And let's face it, you're not going to do that on your phone.) The maximum addressable memory chunk in 32-bit mode is 4GB. (2^32 = 4,294,967,296 bytes = 4,294,967,296 / (1,024 x 1,024) = 4,096 MB = 4GB)
Also, the build quality on this phone is great. It's $229 - $299. The **** do you people want?

Oh, the contradictions...
If you know that the Moto G series is a mid level phone, then why whine about it's supossedly sub-standard hardware and buy one? Makes no sense.
The phone has an excellent SoC with 4GB of ram and a great camera. Everything for a great price. You get android 7.0 out of the box with high chances that you'll get even Android 9.
I don't know why we complain about a phone that never pretended to be a flagship.

[Q] Do you think the Zenfone 2 will receive attention from third-party devs and ROMs?

I was about to buy a OnePlus One, but on finding out about the Asus Zenfone 2, decided to hold until concrete pricing and reviews of the Zenfone 2 (the 1080p, 4 GB RAM, higher-clock CPU version) come in.
My main concern is about the Intel CPU inside the Zenfone 2. While its raw performance apparently beats the Snapdragon 801 in the OnePlus One (comparisons at fool.com/investing/general/2014/06/05/how-does-intels-atom-z3580-hold-up-against-qualcom.aspx), I'm worried about how much third-party devs and ROM-makers care about non-ARM/Qualcomm chipsets. I'm not sure about how quick and diligent Asus is with OS updates, and I'm not sure I'd be happy enough with their ZenUI ROM. I'd definitely like the option of alternative custom ROMs like CM, for example.
Do you think the Zenfone 2 will attract considerable dev interest to have a decent community of custom ROMs behind it? Or will a user probably be stuck with the manufacturer ROM and be at the mercy of Asus for OS updates?

Probably will not because of the intel chip but the good news is the custom lolipop rom is awesome!!!! No need for a custom rom
will will have root but thats about it
Asus is generally pretty good with updates, and with so much riding on this flagship, it won't lose the spotlight for a while. Developmentally, I'm expecting something along the lines of how the Xperia Z3 went, slow but steady. The LG and HTC will probably have more out of the gate, but considering their price tags, and the fact that it's nothing new, the ZF2 is what I'll be working with for the time being.
I think we will get some good custom roms like PA and CM. Only time will tell, and fortunately the processor. The previous zenfone had some custom roms, just with some complicated issues (likewise) but yeah we should get some custom roms

I don't know, ASUS always shares kernel source, there is x86, x64 AOSP source, the intel specs are mostly known. So it wouldn't be impossible to make a rom boot on the phone, but for full functionality we would need compatible binary blobs or more open documentation. But I'm more and more inclined to try it.

I see, well it's good to know Asus is open enough and the Intel support isn't locked away or anything. I trust that the highly capable persons and the ones like you who want to give it a shot will find ways to getting things off the ground once the time comes.
Fingers-crossed for readily available Intel chip support so even if everything starts slow, we'd still have the chance to bring out the device's best potential!
I'm very, very keen on the Zenfone 2, but if the Intel architecture will mean unavailability of complete, fully functional custom ROMs like CyanogenMod, I might think twice and opt for the OnePlus One, instead.
One of my greatest regrets with my last phone purchase (the Sony Xperia SL) was the low developer interest. The Xperia S had some, but the SL was far less popular, and using a ROM designed for the S meant losing out on the extra 200 MHz of processor speed, primarily.
I'm taking a look at the stuff here, and I think I can work with it. I do take some exception to the somewhat costly tools, however.
I think the Zenfone 2 will have a decent backing in terms of ROMs and such, considering the price range and what the phone is capable of.
Probably going to be one of the best value phones this year.

I'm happy to hear that you'll at least be one of the persons willing to take up the challenge, since any effort made is better than none. I myself wouldn't mind being a rom builder or at least assist with with the process since I have prior experience with my current Moto Atrix 2. I'm still a novice so I can't do any level of coding or kanging.
Along those lines, I do hope Asus is cooperative enough to enable as open rom development as possible to ensure they that they will maintain our loyalty to the Zenfone 2 line. They absolutely need to avoid OTA update fragmentation, locked bootloaders and poor software update support to any issues we all face. If they really play their cards right, they'll definitely make this their and our year for a revolutionary device worth working with!

I am not that techy but just felt as a miss match which could hamper performance maybe... please someone let me know... will highly appreciate it!.. its kinda good and ok. ** And I did the antutu test, it came lesser(59k) than what came on marshmallow(62k) sadly
Before someone jumps down your throat, I'll let you know this has been covered in multiple threads. The chip is capable of 64. However, 64 is for hardware running larger RAM than we are. So we are at 32. It doesn't affect performance.

sorry i havn't checked other threads, though thank you. But doze looks great and much better on nougat

The CPU has a different instruction set when it is running 64 bit. If the app is optimized for 64 bit, it may profit. Optimized Chess engines in average run about 15-20% faster on arm64 than on arm. Not optimized apps may run a bit faster on 32 bit, because the overhead is smaller. In average you probably will not notice the difference. Memory consumption per app is higher using 64 bit, this may be a bigger disadvantage than a few percentage performance gain for special use cases.

Noob question: How long a device is supported by lineage?

Hello,
I'm new to cyanogen/lineage, and I become interested because so far the only experience I got with android is a phone that wasn't updated even once by the company (bq) and a tablet that will get stuck on 6.0 (motorola).
Therefore my main concern is to have updates for as long as possible.
I can see that many devices I'm interested in don't list any maintainer:
wiki.lineageos.org/devices/ (can't post links)
Does this mean that those phones won't get any new lineage version?
Is there a way to know if a phone will be abandoned sooner than others?
Is it better to buy well known device than a more rare brand?
Is it better to buy a high end phone used than a basic model new?
Any recommendations? I need a pretty simple thing, 4G is a must and dual SIM would be a nice feature. I'm not that interested in power screen resolution or camera.
Thanks a lot for your answers.
I have seen devices getting removed due to inactive maintainers. So hard to say any time.
I use a Moto Z. It's getting it's first build soon [emoji2]

As far as I know, android 7 cannot be installed in any 32 bit processor. Will be the same with lineage? The equivalent version only will be compatible with 64 bit processors?

I was sure that I read it somewhere, but it may be that this was comment from a particular brand.
If there is no limitation in this regard I feel more comfortable buying a used device with an older processor.

LG (V30) Signature Edition

I just found this
A signature edition of the V30 (very limited), appearantly comes with Oreo preinstalled.... (and 6GB of RAM, and also 256GB internal storage, and other case)
Not planning to buy it, but im wondering, as it ships with Oreo, but still is kinda a V30, if it has to support Treble or not ? (as googles policy only counts for completly new devices i think, and not "new" but rebranded phones)

How would you order this...?!

Oh friends don't you worry, I already know a few koreans who would get this just to have something limited edition and custom made with their name on it

I wont get this, but im considering a normal V30 as my next phone ?
But i wonder if LG has to go through all licensing and so again for this model (as it ships with Oreo, that would mean it HAS treble support, otherwise no gapps), or if its considered the same, and is just "updated"....

At this point there's no promise on treble which worries me, hope this signature edition means we will get treble

I wrote the US and the Austrian support a few days ago, about this, as treble would be a huge bonus in my consideration of which phone i want to buy.
The austrian support couldnt say anything. The US support told me, if they will support it, they will put it big on their website, will attach a screenshot of their answer.
I have a feeling it's going to be heavier. So it's a no from me. I've only used 26GB on my 256GB iPhone 7 Plus, so storage is not a big deal. I like these LG headphones so the B&O ones don't appeal to me. Engraving? Yeah, I flip technology a lot so no point at all. 6GB RAM, meh I've had literally no app crashes or refreshes on 4GB. So that's not essential. The screen is the same. So no obvious upgrade there.
Most will probably still use a case so it'll look the same as the rest of ours. They left the 5MP front camera. LOL!

Moto G5 (XT1676) in 2020

Hello everybody.
I'm looking to buy this phone (new) as a daily driver. I know its kinda old, so I would like to ask is it still worth it to buy this phone? I don't use much apps and use my phone for texting, browsing, reddit, calls etc...
I see that there are a lot of roms for this phone, so i would like to ask are they reliable and up-to-date? Or have they been abandoned? I would like to buy a phone and be set with it for next 5+ years.
I would like to buy a phone with removable battery so my other option is Samsung xcover 4s.
Thanks in advance.

If you buy an 3GB RAM model, I think you're OK.

Custom 64bit roms for this device currently have a bug with the camera
If you can get your hands on one look at the Moto g7 play on ebay
It's updatable to stock android 10 and probably just as cheap as this device second hand or refurbished

If I may ask. Does this bug affect 3rd party cameras?

Effects any camera app
May have slight green tint in photos
May only be be able to take a certain amount of photos before phone/app needs restarting
Video recording may not work in some apps or may not save file correctly
QR code scanning may not work correctly
The above list is a rough bug list and may vary on a device by device basis & rom version & apps being used

Thank you for the excellent reply. I'm quite happy at the moment with the Stock Oreo on my G5 which I recently got A-grade refurbished at a decent price as my old Moto G3 is getting a bit tatty. It seems that my old G3 is better supported at the moment as I'm running 3 different Android 10 Custom roms all working good(Floko/crDroid/Havoc).
It's a shame that crDroid seem to only cover the G5 Potter and Sanders

Thank you guys. Moto G7 is a bit too large for me as i would like something below 5.5. All the other phones that i've looked at are upgradeable to Oreo or Pie at best. Xcover 4s is upgreadable to Android 10, so i think ill go with that one. And all of the custom roms for other smartphones i've looked at, like LG G3 or G5 seem to have some bugs, or they are not up to date. I don't know is there a point in installing something like LineageOS 14, if that rom is out dated and has security holes in it.

Moto g7 play screen is 5.7 Inch but probably worth the extra screen size compared with other options
LineageOS 14.1 for this device (along with stock rom) is only 32bit so you are limited to only arm-eabi armv7 apps as apposed to later devices which are armv8 and support arm64 (64 bit) out the box

I've done some research and G7 for European market does not have removable battery, and there aren't any i can buy locally. I would like to buy locally because the shipping adds to the price. What about LG G5, would you recomend it if i put some stable and official rom on it?
Thanks in advance.
