Going from RR to MODest & GearVR Support - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently using the latest version of ResurrectionRemix and it's a bit too unstable for me so I'd like to go back to something stock-ish. I'm currently on CQB2, so should I do anything more than flash CQC1 and then MODest? (I'm going to do a clean flash.)
Also, I've had a lot of trouble getting anything GearVR-related to work ever since I first started flashing custom roms on this phone. (Even after completely reverting to unrooted/locked stock more than once.) Is there anything I can do to get that functionality back?

I was looking at RR, myself. I'm glad I came across your post. Thank you. With to hsbadr's other 7.1 ROMs, it looked as if you needed to flash a special version of TWRP, but not with RR. Did you do this by accident? It doesn't appear that RR needs this. I wouldn't know for sure, not would I know if flashing this special version of TWRP would cause the instabilities you speak of.
I'm on the second most latest version of MODest (v6). There were problems with v7. First, the wifi didn't work, and that got fixed with an update (v7.1). I believe there's another issue with it, regarding a method to unlock your phone. It wouldn't affect me, since I use a PIN. Read the thread on it, maybe just glance through the last couple of pages.
Anyway, I THINK all you need to do, is flash CQC1 in Odin, then the ROM in TWRP, which includes a kernel. He's also got a separate post for the kernel, as well. Not sure why. Since I'm on MODest, I don't need it.
I'm waiting until everything is ironed out to upgrade to v7.x. v6 is running just fine, for me, but I'm a glutton for punishment and upgrading my phone, going through the backup and restore process over and over again.

[Q] CWRM / TWRP Charging?

Hello,
I've read through the Everything thread on Development, as well as searched using the xda search and google site search, but come up with nothing.
The Everything thread mentions that the current version of CWRM won't charge when the phone is off or in recovery, but I can't find anything about which version is the 'latest' (6.0.1.2, 5.0.2.7), nor if this also affects the TWRP recoveries (2.6.3, 2.4.1)? For that matter, I can't find anything that even mentions the charging problems at all aside from the Everything thread!
If there is a charging problem with all of the third party ROMs, is there a method to go back to the stock recovery after flashing in a ROM and backing up /efs/? I'm basically shooting for a fully functional phone and I don't plan on changing ROMs all over the place, just root and ICS.
Help?
Thanks!

I think something like 6.0.4 the latest CWMR. ( you can build with http://builder.clockworkmod.com/ , Existing Device option doesnt work)
It charges in latest TWRP, you can see "+" char when on charge next to the battery level.
Stock uses recovery for official upgrade, and factory reset. We have only offline charge issue, but recovery has no effect on it. Offline charger works with a limitation. I wouldnt bother you with the explanation, since you said you would like to use stock ICS.
You can backup efs in rooted rom without recovery. You can always flash recovery with odin phone in download mode.
Thanks.
I guess I had assumed the comment was referring to the builds in the Development forum, not the overall CWMR project! Is there a currently recommended recovery, or is it a toss up to personal preference? I'm not so much tied to ICS as tied to a completely working ROM - especially as I see all the bluetooth and skype issues with the JB ROMs, which (as far as I can tell) are still unresolved / unknown?

I make TWRP for i927, we dont have other up to date, but you can build yourself.
Dont you have issue with stock ICS? I made up to date issue list in me CM 10.2, you could decide it suit for you or not, you may know stock limitation already.
I hope voip issue would be resolved soon.

My only real requirement in a phone is that it be reliable - I don't want to have to pop out batteries or have no audio on calls if I get stranded in the middle of nowhere. At this point, my phone is still in the mail - got a used one from a friend, but it hasn't arrived, so I haven't had much ability to experiment yet.
My Android experience is exclusively with a Transformer TF101, which had 4.0.4 ICS stock and is currently running Katkiss JB 4.2.2_226 (Katkiss 4.3 isn't stable enough for me yet, was getting daily crashes last time I tried). All of the phone components are new to me - and the Glide seems to have a more fragmented recovery scene than the TF101, which is pretty much TWRP or nothin'
Thanks again for your help!

[Q] need some help with this

ok, i just got a captivate glide from my gf, ive been looking into flashing and rooting for about 3 months, but i JUST got an android (ik so behind) but originally i was looking into sidekick 4g for keyboard but this worked too in my eyes and it was free so i figured why not, but either way i wanted to root and flash, but now im at a barricade that im not sure if to continue or not, i rooted using one of the threads directions
this one to be exact
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378082
i ran into a barricade here at first, the initial set up wouldnt run, i fixed that by doing the Vol. Down plus Power recovery mode i think its called, and clearing memory then rebooting and it worked fine, i was rooted and had the super user app as well (some boxes from widgets were invosible like accuweather and the android assistant thing but, thats ok).
ok next step i knew if i was supposed to try to flash a rom i should back up EFS which i did with some difficulty (such as figuring out i needed busybox lol)
ok now my next step was installing ROM manager by clockworkmods
NOW onto the actual part i need help with that i couldnt figure out myself (and excuse me for being newbish here too as i dont know much but im not bad with tech either but i felt i damn near bricked the phone in the process already so i WANT to continue with guidance before i do anything else)
now that im rooted, now that everythings backed up on my computer and ive got rommanager and everything
what now
will i still be rooted once i flash a rom? will i still have busy box, super user, all of that stuff? (as the thread i rooted with clearly said that was flashing a rooted rom)
and theres some other personalization questions i need help with too but thats more towards once ik what direction im going in
and uh.. not sure if it matters but im on metropcs service, so occasionally i get issues if i have to reset the phone at all as i have to change the ANP or ADP cant remember the acronym but ive got to change it from some t-mobile one to the metropcs one, i dont see why that would matter but, its a just in case emasure, also im using the ATT one not rodgers (not even sure what rodgers is tbh)
EDIT: OH one last thing. the rooted rom is gingerbread.. thats my main reason for wanting to change it.. i want kitkat, or would prefer kitkat, but id like some opinions as well on what perhaps the best ROM would be, im not sure between omni-rom and cyanogynmod which are the main ones im looking into, but, again, get more into that later
ok now
now im looking through the Rom info.. and.. im starting to wonder.. is it even worth it?
what sacrifices am i going to be making if i flash a custom? what all can i change without flashing a custom? and can i still get kitkat without screwing up my root (KIES?? or ODIN??) its just the things like this that make me wonder... i want the root, that much i DO know, theres so much i can do with rooting im seeing this and enjoying this, but i just need some type of guidance as to what to do, and if theres a better place for this thread please feel free to move it as i do see that it might be ok to have under general ndroid questions, but, i wasnt all too sure on it as this isthe phone im using so any issues deriving from the phone type might screw someone up
Most of the custom roms are rooted already.
There is only 4.0 official, no kitkat. We dont have odin custom images, nor KIES. You must wipe your data, system, boot parition, install KK means clean phone for you.
I think KK is better then official, but it has some limitation.

ok.. im confused then, cause i had kitkat on it when i used kies to update firmware, or atleast i thought i did, perhaps because both had 4 and i was sleepy i was confused lol, and sorry but if KK doesnt mean KitKat then what does it mean. and how high will a custom Rom take me in terms of lining up with official, just to ice cream sandwich?. and.. cyanogenmod, ive been tempted to get it but.. im not sure exactly which one to get because when i was on the site i only found captivate in the devices not captivate glide
EDIT: one more thing, as far as wiping the phone clean and starting over, what do i use.
and of course if you say the rest are rooted, then whats one of the best kernels and roms to use then, its true i want atleast ICS on here, so.. if im right i looked up KK, do you mean KKlauncher the app?
well...
ok i soft bricked my phone, it just shut down in middle of installing some fonts, and for some reason i cant restore it even tho i created a back up as it advised me to do so, i get errors in CWM recovery,
now im about to just do this
using this as a sort of reference so people can keep track of me if something else happens that i mess up..

I mean KK is kitkat. I dont know what did you read, but there is ICS the last official.
Cyanogenmod and other custom roms has own official support, that what you can download rom their site. We dont have official support from them, you cant download those roms from there. You can found download link in rom's threads.

I preffer CM11, but yon can found many other KK roms.
If you brick you randroid, just reinstall same you had.

hell i got it back on default ICS now lol, i screwed it up XD and yea ik you guys dont have the downloads your selves but the links and guidance of what i should be doing is basically what i was after ill look at the link you gave me, i think im going to chill out with the flashing right this second, but ill pick it back up later im sure, i atleast liked the cpu setting apps. made my battery last much longer and for what time it lasted i loved it
ok another thing im concerned with is alot have bugs that are deal breakers for me, such as messing up the keyboard (the whole reason i have this phone)
and looking through it i do like CM11 too
but looking at your post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588304
can you explain what you mean by the fixed rotation and skype issues,
and perhaps is there a full feature list somewhere? thats one big thing i want to look at if possible, i usually just keep seeing bug fixes on any ROM
Voip apps (skype, vibert etc) have strange sound, only temporaly fix exists.
When you take a picture with camera, it has fix rotation, I dont remember witch position is the fixed one, but you make photos with different rotation, the picture will be rotate 90/180/270, and you must fix the image.
Most importan bug are: phone call sound doesnt work with BT devices, and voip sound is buggy.

Stock Lolipop vs CM12 and Kernel woe's

I got a Nexus 7 2013 (32GB wifi) off of reddit.com/r/hardwareswap for $80, and absolutely love it.
Naturally I applied the 5.0 OTA update, rooted it, and installed ClockworkMod Touch first chance I got.
Frustrated by not being able to apply the 5.0.2, I realized that Cyanogenmod 12 was based on 5.0.2 (or at least the latest nightly was) so I figured that was the best way to get the newest version, and would make updating easy after that (cyanogenmod's update tool works great, much easier than flashing updates individually, or hoping a stock ota update will play nice with your custom recovery)
After that my nexus 7 was almost perfect, but I had to get the stock boot animation back because it's way cooler than CM12's.
Finally, I REALLY wanted the ability to double tap the screen to wake it. This is something that I've gotten so used to on my Xperia Z3, and there was a nice way to do it that required Xposed framework, which doesn't work on ART, so that is out. It seems that getting a custom kernel that will play nice with the TouchControl root app is the only way I've been able to find that will let you do the double tap to wake thing.
Anyway I flashed the lastest Franco Kernel and it totally jacked up my Nexus. I had anticipated that and made a backup, and restored to that backup, but that didn't fix the problem and now it just bootloops the splash screen, although I can get into recovery and the bootloader.
So now, I figure I can either try flashing the original CM12 kernel over the broken franco kernel, or I can just re-flash the ROM and start from scratch. I'd really rather not do that, but I may have to. I can't get into the filesystem or get adb to find the device because of drivers, so I'm not sure which will be more of a headache: figuring out getting drivers to work in recovery/bootloader, or setting up android from scratch.
I just realized that it might be easiest to do a factory reset THEN restore from the backup, so I'll give that a try.
All of this got me thinking, is CM12 better than stock Lolipop 5.0.2? I just flashed it for easy updates and to get to the latest version, but what is everyone elses experiences between the two?
Also I'd love to hear of other ways to get the double tap to wake on Lolipop that might not involved flashing custom Kernels. Though I think I might give the ElementalX Kernel a shot, and it looks like that one won't break everything.
Franco's L kernel works with CM12, but if you have problems, just reflash the CM zip. Nothing else required.
I wouldn't use CM12 atm unless you like to test drive stuff, it's too early in development you can encounter quite a few bugs.
ElementalX kernel has the double tap to wake and a few other features. The only issue which is minor IMO is that is you update to the newest nightly you'll go back to CM kernel, and have to flash the ElementalX again. There may be a way around this, but I've only been on that kernel for a couple days now and haven't really looked in to a solution.

I can't say that I have encountered any real bugs, it seems very stable. Early on there seemed to be a battery drain and data connection seemed exceptionally slow at times, these may have been just due to my setup. I haven't had any of those problems for the last two weeks or so. Have you used it? If not why would you discourage someone when you have no personal experience?

Help, plz? (nandroid stuff)

working on a sprint note 2 (of course). Rooted, flashed twrp with Odin, clean flashed CM 13 nightly (2016.12.18). Worked well, but no LTE. Tried flashing the newest radio, lost APN access. Flashed a Sprint APN fix, no change.
So, after all that failed, I did a full wipe and format /data and /data/storage or whatev, and went to restore the nandroid backup of the stock JB. Restore went fine, no errors, but upon booting the phone, I'm hit with a never ending barrage of "this thing stopped, that thing stopped"; seemingly every process on the phone just crashed over and over and over.
As i'm typing, i'm wondering: is it the radio flash, being as the latest available was for KK, and now i'm back trying to run JB? I wouldn't think that would cause the ui to implode, logic seems to me that only the cellular service would be affected by that, but it's just now the one thing i realized that is definitely different.
Right now i'm about to push the cm 12.1 (2015.11.17) and see what happens, but I know pretty much everyone here knows volumes more about this kinda stuff than I, so I'm making a post to see what kinda options someone else could come up with for me to try.
It's not really a big deal to have the stock rom or a custom one (of course i'd prefer something newer, this device should be plenty able to handle anything I can throw at it, but...), Just need that LTE coverage. So, any and all recommendations or solutions welcome!

TWRP Help

It's been awhile since I've been on any Android forum. But recently I got a Redmi Note 8, and I looked up the whole process on Unlocking, Unlocking the Bootloader, and Rooting. I usually use a Galaxy phone and due to certain features possible being unusable, I refrain some doing any type of mod to it. SO i was excited to mod the gingko. I followed all the steps on the guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...de-unlocking-bootloader-twrp-rooting-t4031831
Did everything succesfully, although I cant get the phone to pass ctsProfile in Magisk, but thats another unrelated problem. Anyway, I am new to using TWRP, previous phones I used to flash mods used CWM so I'm bit unfamiliar with TWRP troubleshooting. I tried searching for this already but couldnt find anything. Im tying to create a backup but whenever it tried to backup the system image, it fails. I tried backing up the boot, data, and system image. System Image fails. I tried backing up all partitions and it still fails on the System Image. I'm excited to flash the roms on here but dont want to revert to full stock everytime something comes up and have to re-configure the phone. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
im like you, im used to flashing samsungs htc's etc, seems like new phone roms are different, to say marshmallow lollipop kitkat etc, im reluctant as you
i used to backup in twrp, system, data(excl storage)cache, boot, modem, efs, now its all different, i have found no definitive answer as to what to backup and not, i read destroyed system etc bricked etc etc, i have never bricked a device, but this new system confuses me, no do's or dont's, or this will happen... it would be nice to have, dont so this or x will happen, flashing homebrew vs xiaomi roms, this will happen, do this for homebrew, this for xiaomi roms seem convoluted compared to the past.

I definitely believe the earlier days were easier. This was back during the GingerBread days, then HoneyComb was skipped by my device at the time and ICS became the big bad boy on the playground. Less security measures, easier exploits, etc. A lot of stuff has remain the same. I think the hardest part with Xiaomi was waiting the 168 hours to unlock the phone.
Also I think I answered my original question. i had my backup set to go to the sd card and when I changed it to internal storage, it finally backed up all. I did a little research and from what I saw you should be backing up boot, data, and system. I saw system image and not system so I was confused. Looked up a couple more things and just like backing up a computer, it doesnt hurt to backup everything. So I backed up every single partition.
I also know I can backup using adb, just wanna make sure I have a backup on my phone in case I'm nowhere near my computer. 1 backup on phone, 1 backup on computer. Not really worried about bricking my little gingko since it's not the actual phone I used.

Oh man, CWM recovery, the good old days lol
Which TWRP version are you using? Official? Try unofficial one https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...ecovery-unofficial-twrp-xiaomi-redmi-t3997267
If still no luck, try PB recovery or OrangeFox, its based on TWRP with theme and more features.

haha cwm vs twrp tried both over the years, different phones etc, twrp imho had a better interface, and updates..but it had one glitch, sometimes on versions it would not save region and time, but thats all the by and by now, i assume..we have orangefox now, nad has that fixed the time error?
im still reluctant to root my note 8t, probably sell it, as it has not led notification sadly, probably get the note 8 pro.

I was using the official one, I think its version 3.3.1.0 or something like that. I think I'm gonna try the unofficial cause I want to flash CrDroid. Seems like the ROM which the least amount of issues but I'll probably flash a new rom every week to see which one is best.
Telegram? Is that like discord? I'll have to look more into this. But yeah good old CWM days. I think the last time I did any flashing was back in like 2013-14.

Unoffical one is 3.3.1.10, just give it a try.
Yeah, like a discord, messanger app basicly.
There is custom roms and kernel which you can only find in telegram group
Oh, every Android 10 custom rom had issue with camera. Yellow tint and aux camera. So, if camera is important to you just stick in miui roms for the moment, xiaomi eu for example.
But, if you just want some adventure for your phone, go for it. Try GSI too, there is alot of it.

Camera isnt a big deal. I've seen that all AOSP roms have that camera issues from reading the reads. Kinda sucky for people that want to use daily drivers.
