Wifi and GPS? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Hello. Is Wifi good in this phone fast and stable? What about gps? Is it accurate? Have you encountered any issues? I'm not confident making a move, i hear there are many complaints about signal issues in this phone

Hello,
Some suffer issues others don't...
I have seen several people suffering of slow speeds on WiFi.
Also someone having a GPS which doesn't lock here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/help/gps-locking-available-satellites-t3602047
Mine locks in a few seconds and really accurate.
Talking about cell reception, i have a bad signal in my town. My provider doesn't have much cell towers here. But it performs just like my previous Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, HTC ONE, etc...
I have none of the issues you are talking about by the way. I used to have a Bluetooth battery drain while connected to my Volkswagen mk6 Golf, which seems to be solved since 7.1.2.
Cheers...

Wifi is good. GPS is good. Phone is still fast but meh.

Zero connectivity issues for me with WiFi, GPS, and cellular. All have been stellar.
Bluetooth is the only thing that has trouble sometimes, and is the most common connectivity complaint among Pixel/XL users. Seems to be external device dependent in my experience as it works fine with most bluetooth devices I've tried, but cuts in and out from time to time with others (my car bluetooth and 1 pair of old headphones).

No issues here.

WiFi reception - Radio issue?

My new Rhodium/HTC Touch Pro 2 is a truly lovely experience ... except that the WiFi reception is significantly worse than it was with my previous phone (a Touch Pro). On the TP I am getting rock solid WiFi connectivity and good signal strength; in exactly the same spot, the TP2 is repeatedly dropping the connection and then having trouble reconnecting.
Is anyone else having the same problem?
I guess it's an issue with the Radio software. So far, there aren't a whole load of Radio versions out there (or at least there aren't any mentioned on the wiki) ... but does anyone have any suggestions, or ideas about which Radio versions work better, or worse?
Thanks for any responses,
Jim
Yes, I also can confirm wifi strength for Touch Pro (Raphael) is stronger.
At this time we only can set the wifi setting to best performance until further official updates

WiFi Signal level

If I don't miss remember upon upgrade to JB on my yakyu device, my GN experiences a very low signal from any wifi APs, testing with different android devices from friends, my GN measures the weakest wifi signal of them all, is this a problem with the device itself, had anyone experience anything similar?
Thanks in advance
For me, the measured signal _seems_ to be worse then on ICS (it shows less bars). Would need to check with WiFi Analyzer or similiar but TBH, I didn't notice connectivity problems compared to ICS.
I do here, and the problem as I see it is not the wifi signal/power itself is the quality/sensitivity on the GN receiver, since other devices measures at least one or two bars where mine don't.
And to this date, I keep noticing more and more problems in the JB GN, shouldn't the so-called Google flagship device have more updates/corrections/support from google itself? I'm starting to regret having bought this device.

Not everyone has this issue. My WiFi signal strength, connection quality, connection stability, and speeds all remained the same on 4.1.1.

Improve GPS signal strenght

Is there any way to improve GPS signal once it's locked in to sattelites? Lately it has been happening to me that Nexus randomly drops signal when I run under trees and it's really annoying.

gps signal is weak when there are clouds , specially in overcast its weak, since our gnex doesnt have GLONASS , its weaker compared to the newer devices
to me gnex is weaker then any of my older GPS equipped devices.
I've tried every tweak to improve lock up speed, but it still sucks badly

lol what you talking about ? i get a gps lock in less than 12 seconds ,when you turn of Agps ,its a different story , it takes a bout 3 minutes
Sygic Locks with me instantly if the weather is clear and mobile data "3G" is enabled ,but takes 2 to 4 min. if offline
I think any tweak i used affects only when i have internet and doesn't make any difference when offline
My GNEX takes a whole lot longer to find satellites compared to my iPad 2 with all location aids turned on. And while driving, it would occasionaly lose the GPS signal. Which is frustrating and makes me lose a turn..
Does the GPS have issues connecting even after a reboot? I remember way back in my HTC Evo 4G days, if I had up time of nearly 3-4 weeks, I would start having issues connecting to satellites. A reboot would clear it right up. I usually reboot my Galaxy Nexus every other day, and I never have GPS issues, unless I'm in a concrete/rebar building..

How's XL's GPS?

Hows the GPS performance on the XL. Post on the pixel mentions issues in waze.
Concerns me, as I am an avid GPS user, especially when searching locations via Google Now.
On my v10 Id have to reboot sometimes, as it wouldnt get a lock or loose gps signal too often to be reliable. So far its been better once I disabled the Qualcomm IZat low power location estimation feature.
Please chime in, thanks
I used Google Maps every day going to work and I've had it since the 20th. Has worked every day with 0 issues.
Fantastic glad to hear

Dude GPS is amazing on the xl. I had to get my v10 replaced FOUR times because the GPS failed on every one of them. Just stopped working completely.
Works fine here, seems to be very accurate
GPS seems to be working fine on Maps, but sometimes its a bit jumpy while using Waze. It tries to recalculate my route every so often, even if im simply cruising on the freeway. It gets pretty annoying especially since it keeps doing the recalculation noise. Think it may just be a bug with Waze.
I use waze for 70+ miles a day some days. Seems to work fine.
This has been my biggest issue with Android phones. Every Android phone I've ever had has had GPS issues. Mind you they were all Samsung phones though. First was the S4 which I exchanged once for another S4 because of GPS not working, and the replacement eventually had GPS problems too. After that I had a Note 4. This was basically a repeat of the S4. Exchanged it once for another Note 4 and the GPS never worked right in any of them. After the Note 4 I went to an iPhone 6s+. Don't really care for iOS in general compared to Android, but the GPS never let me down on the iPhone.
Although I haven't used the GPS in my Pixel XL much yet, I feel confident that it will work. Mostly because back when I had all those crap Samsung phones I would end up using my Nexus 7 tethered to the phone for my GPS needs. It always worked. So the Pixel basically has the same DNA as the Nexus line of devices and conventional wisdom tells me that the GPS should work ok.
GPS is about the same as any other phone for me.
I haven't used it much though, not yet.
Pull myself up on maps.google and I can see it wandering around my neighborhood like all other phones do.
Eventually, like all other phones, it settles down as it contacts more GPS satellites and pinpoints my location.
And just like every other phone, it gets my location wrong by about 30' or so.
So.... the GPS is nothing special.
Same as every other phone I've had so far.
Ive been having severe issues on my XL.
Losing my GPS signal every 20 seconds. Now it wont lock on at all.
Tried factory reset and reimaging
Might have to replace the phone... Need to call Google support and see what they say
Hmm coming from my LG g5 that had an awful GPS similar to what the post above me is describing. I have loved the GPS on this phone it works perfectly.

I had the issue with Waze and maps not getting a lock and intstall GPS status seemed to fix it. I recalibrated and let it get a lock and it's worked since.
Insanely, unbelievably good. Quickest fix (in device-only mode, which is the only mode I ever use) and best indoor performance of any Android device I've ever owned.
gps
hi,
is working fine at me
To answer my own query, since I got my xl I've been running navigation home without an issue, taking alternate routes and purposely not following recommended routes it works great so far.

Android 10 Signal Strength

Didn't see a thread covering this, so I figured I'd start one.
One issue that has plagued my Pixel 2XL is severely diminished LTE signal strength on Android 10. I first encountered this on beta 5, and again on beta 6. My signal dbm's were 10-15 less than on Pie, and the signal indicator was rarely, if ever, above 1 bar. My signal would fluctuate wildly based on location, and would rarely hold steady. Speed tests confirmed things. Extremely frustrating. It was such a problem that I eventually opted out of the beta program and rolled back to Pie before the official release of Android 10. Since then my signal strength has returned to normal and been steady and solid. I have not updated to official Android 10 yet, and keep hoping that this issue will be resolved through a monthly security patch. So far, from what I have been able to gather, this issue has not been fixed. There are several different threads covering this issue, as well as official issue tracker threads with Google:

https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixe...el_3_weak_signal_on_verizon_after_android_10/
I am having this issue on my 2XL, on AT&T, however this issue persists across devices and carriers, and doesn't seem to discriminate. As with most things though, there are plenty of folks who say they are not effected by this in the least.
So my question here is this:
Has anyone noticed a decrease in signal strength on Android 10 on the Pixel 2XL?
LTE? 3G? WiFi?
Fluctuating signal? Dropped calls? Poor data speeds?
I'd really love to update to 10, and the latest December patch, but am extremely hesitant to do so, based on what I have personally experienced and read in the above threads.
Any input, opinions, personal anecdotes are welcome. Thanks in advance.
I haven't had any issues with LTE signal as you described, but I have had problems with WiFi signal regularly dropping. After some research, I found that the issue was with Android and my router which puts out a 5ghz and 2.4ghz signal - Android 10 would drop the signal when switching between the two. My solution for home was to turn off the 5ghz channel on my router and my issues with WiFi went away.
I don't use WiFi away from home frequently enough to see if this signal issue has persisted on other connections, hoping for a fix in the December security patch.
I am running Android 10, rooted with Magisk. Clean installed about two weeks ago and the issue was apparent from the get-go. Never had anything like this in Pie.
I can't say for sure on the LTE side as I never checked numbers prior to updating to A10B5, however signal strength barely shows on the indicator. Tower is 4 blocks away. My wifi is terrible and there appear many variations across Pixels. No solutions here but appears to be a widespread problem. FYI.

UPDATE:
Last night, I received and flashed the OTA update. I went into my home route and turned on the 5ghz channel again and the WiFi issue immediately returned for me. So, sadly no fix in the December patch and at least in my experience, this is limited to 5ghz connections. For now, I've reverted by home WiFi back to 2.4ghz and it's working fine.

Thanks for the update on the WiFi side of things. Sucks that that hasn't been fixed yet, after months of it being a known issue.
Just out of curiosity, how is your LTE signal strength on the December update? Dbm's and signal bars appear to be normal? Any dropped calls or slower than usual data speeds?
The WiFi issue sucks, but at least it can be worked around for now. There is no substituting for poor signal and connectivity though, and that is still a deal breaker for me moving forward.
Thanks in advance for any input, I appreciate it.

If there has been a change with my LTE signal strength, I certainly don't notice it. I haven't had any dropped calls or slow data speeds.

Thanks, good to know. Not to beat a dead horse here, but in general, do you notice less signal bars on 10 than previously on Pie? On the betas, I rarely showed more than 1 bar at any given time, and dbm's were less across the board as well. Frustrating. I realize bars don't mean everything, obviously, and the only way to truly measure signal strength is by looking at the actual dbm's. Maybe something in the Android 10 code changed the way signal bars are calculated relative to dbm's?

No, I haven't noticed a change in bars or dbm's since the update. I live in the city and so my service signal has always been strong - no change since upgrading to 10. I should note that I didn't update to 10 until about a week or so ago and when I did, I did a clean flash and then rooted with Magisk. I have since updated to the December security patch, again with no change to my cellular signal.

Thanks, appreciate the responses. It's actually good to hear that things are normal on your end. Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the complaints, and in the process not hear about those who have no issues at all. So strange how this bug seems to randomly effect people, across carriers and various Pixel devices. Some are majorly effected, some not at all. Would love to update, but it's a roll of the dice that I'm not sure I'm willing to take.
I’m wondering, why can’t/don’t you merely update to 10, try it out and see how things go for about a week, and if it’s not a good experience for you, merely roll-back using the Full Factory Pie/9 image?
In any case, I am under Verizon and haven’t noticed any lowering of network signal or performance. I do experience some need to re-initialize the wifi – but, to be fair, I had that issue in Pie – but maybe not as frequent.
Either way, many/most have a good enough positive experience that it’s simply at least worth a try; at least on a temporary basis. But, again either way, good luck and hope this helps…

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it. I am probably one of the few Pixel owners out there who are still running completely stock and unrooted, and I also never bothered to unlock the bootloader. So needless to say, having the ability/option to flash back to the factory image for PIe, should things go sideways, would take some work. I'll probably update at some point, but I have had literally zero issues on PIe. It runs flawlessly for me, and always has, so the thought of introducing potential problems makes me a bit hesitant. Just wanted to try to see how widespread this signal issue was., that's all.
