[UPDATED] Android Market Apps I bought for my Hero: Are they "paid for" on my Desire?

Now I get it. See Post #6 below. Google's dragging their ass on "fingerprint" approval. They need to be SHAMED virally across the web for sheer incompetence -- or intentional malice toward purchasers of a phone that competes with their Nexus One. "Do No Evil" my ass.

I bought maybe 6-7 apps for my hero -- 2 different keyboards, "Executive Assistant", some kind of alarm clock... When on my Hero, even after factory reset and resetting up my phone, when I went to MARKET and "My Downloads", those paid for apps showed up as available to install again on my Hero.
I have been using my Desire -- but thus far only for Wifi as I set it up and get acquainted with the phone. Perhaps stupidly (!) I am still using the Hero as my "phone" til I have all my apps and widgets and layouts replicated on my Desire.
Though I do not have my carrier's SIM card installed in my Desire, 90% of the device works fine, especially all wifi usages, Market downloads, email, web, etc... I did set up my Gmail account as well.
It's one's Gmail account which is your linkage to PAID FOR apps, via Google Checkout. So, I am surprised that when I select "My downloads" i don't see any indication of paid for apps.
Is this tied to a SIM card? (if so seems ridiculous)
RELATED: I can't even find BETTER KEYBOARD app in the Market now, nor "SMART KEYBOARD" ... Does the market auto-filter out apps that do not run on Android 2.1 ?

From what I read, some paid and free apps should appear as soon as google finishes some signature thing related to that! so it's a matter of time.
By the way, do you see paid apps in general? For me, I always had to use Market Enabaler on the Hero to open Market to paid apps.
A temporary solution, you can use your Hero to extract the paid applications (apk files) using Root Explorer, copy them to the Desire SD card and install them using any file manager. The only limitation here is that you have to keep checking for updates on the Hero.

as far as I know, and experts correct me if wrong, the ability to get access are directly connected to the sim from which you connect.
which is why market enabler used to spoof the apn's from which paid apps were available.
with no sim card you should only be able to get free apps or nothing at all.
I live in Sweden, no paid apps.
was at friends last night who has an old UK sim card, popped that in and I got access to some paid apps. but still with the limitations as previously discussed in this forum. (waiting for Google to get it straightened out)
so, yes & no, the apps are tied to your sim, cuz it tells the phone which apn/ network your phone is connecting from...

Second: salahag, thanks for your reply. I didn't respond initially because I didn't understand it at all. Paid apps showed up in my Hero from day 1 and that was for me October 2009. I was baffled because I had no context for even thinking "is everything that's available showing here?" because by default my brain had no reason to pose that question. I just assumed the Market worked one way, and I was seeing everything the way everyone else sees it.
I'm suddenly quite baffled by this emerging mystery now that I can't find a bunch of apps for my DESIRE. But now the mystery of "where are my paid apps that I bought on my Hero?" is solved, replaced by "why are hundreds of apps that were available on my Hero not available on my Desire?"

I'm an Android developer from the XDA forum & VillainROM.co.uk. I've primarily worked on the Hero, but I received my Desire yesterday.
I can confirm that I too am missing several apps from the market. I also have an answer to your question.
First things first, it's protected apps that are missing from the market. There are generally two reasons why apps will be missing from the market.
(1) When a new ROM/Phone is released, the manufacturer, in this case HTC, sends the build to Google, which includes a 'Fingerprint' (a unique line of text which governs its market access) in the build.prop file. Generally, it states the name of the phone and Android version in the fingerprint. With Root & system write access, this fingerprint can easily be changed... but we don't have that luxury right now.
Once Google approve the build, the fingerprint will be added to their allowed database to view protected apps on the market.
(2) The other cause for apps missing from the market in builds (such as twidroid, layar, barcode scanner etc) is that these apps require permissions to use the camera/auto focus. They are NOT protected apps. If the XML permission files are missing from system/etc/permissions, then Google Market will simply block these apps from showing.
So again... to answer your question... we'll see the protected apps as soon as either:
a) HTC chase up Google
b) Google get around to activating the fingerprint

Un-frikkin-believable.
It's like the equivalence of a dumb low-IQ bureaucrat holding up a long line for Drivers' License renewals at the "Department of Motor Vehicles". No reason at all for the stupid delay other than some asshole letting some work order sit on his desktop til he feels like getting to it.
No wonder the author (gogol) of that other related thread recommends consumer activism or we just stand in line each time and just wait to get ****'d in the ass by beaurocratic process that sounds WAY more like Microsoft than "the smartest guys in the room" at Google -- who pride themselves on only hiring Ivy-league grads and equivalents, like from Stanford. They ought to be ridiculed out of town with this.

Can you clarify this further. Thank you for information related to SIM card needing to be in use in order to access paid apps -- god only knows why -- it's retarded to me.
But is it correct that I have read other places that there are LOCALIZATION ISSUES? where some apps are only available to certain regions? (Like YouTube does) -- Or can you shoot that one down as rumor. I don't get this. Open source OS. Google's entire revenue model based on ads. More phones = more ad impressions = more money to Google. What possible motivation is there to block access to apps in a marketplace that I am willing to pay for -- where Google gets % of all sales, as well as transactional revenue thru Google Checkout? -- Something doesn't make sense. And usually when that's the case, SOMEONE IS BEING PROTECTED in some corporate deal.
What's the story. Is this another CARRIER-TAINTED example of holding customers hostage? If so, I can't wait til the day we can blow up that Carrier-driven model that strangles the free marketplace. They should make it or break it based on direct delivery of services at competitive pricing. I am so tired of Boardroom Protectionist Policies agreed to by major competitors, to ensure a baseline profit well above anything deserved if there was open competition. ... Many thanks - I never even thought to do this. Rooted my Hero, copied the apks (they're in /data/app-private) to the Desire and installed. I now have National Rail and Locale Lockscreen back again

I meant to ask: Is Root Explorer an app from the Market (I'll check of course), and does it only work on rooted Heroes? Mine is unrooted. But I have used Astro app many times for moving stuff from my computer to Hero, and now my Desire. So, it would just be a matter of my knowing which folder/directory to look in on my Hero to access the .apk files.
(EDIT: I see now from daern above: they're in /data/app-private ... well Astro Explorer shows me root folder and data folder but both say "directory is empty", so I am guessing unless I root my Hero i can't access this stuff... right?)

Easy. Install "InstantRook.apk" on the Hero (Google for it, download directly to the device and run from Astro).
Once installed, it will announce "your device is rooted". Now fire up Root Explorer and note that you can see the /data folder. Copy the private apk files to /sdcard and away you go.
It really is as easy as that. It may stuff your Hero (it didn't affect mine in the slightest) but as I'm assuming that you're replacing it anyway, the worst it would require would be a hard-boot anyway.

I found solution for LiveView connection issues and had it posted in Sony Ericsson LiveView™ Issues Thread on xda-forum.com . Unfortunately it hasn't been noticed by users untill now that it has been ripped from this forum and posted on www.robot-home.it on 30th December(http://www.robot-home.it/blog/2010/...i-comunicazione-e-al-blocco-dello-smartphone/) but as their own invention what made me really furious (Luckly it was corrected). It took me time to figure it out.

First of all delete LiveWare Manager, which causes our phones to crash all the time, and gives only one feature in return (shows all available liveview plugins which you can find manualy in the market). Then remove any kind
of Task Killer etc. Next step is to instal MinfreeManager (keep in mind that it requires root premissions). I recommend using Mild/Agressive preset but you have to change Secondary Server values very low (for example 6mb). By setting Secondary Server values to very low LiveView Application and all of the plugins will be kept alive all the time, which will prevent any disconnections. After this I used this solution http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=493 posted by adolfotregosa. Now my LiveView works pretty fine with my SGS running CM 6.1 Nightly. Even if you'll go out of the bluetooth range and then want to reconnect it will happen more or less instantly.
Optional:
Instead of removing Advanced Task Killer you can leave it just set Security Level in Options to Low and then set following processes to ignore:
1. com.android.providers.drm
2. LiveViewApplication
3. OpenWatch
4. com.android.bluetooth
AND all of the processes from plugins you have (they have "liveview" in their name)
For me better option is with Advanced Task Killer enabled but everyone can decide for themselves.
I hope all of LiveView Users will now be able enjoy using this device.

omg ive been ready to though this thing out of the window, after a google search this post came up.
I had to downgrade then root my htc desire hd then ran that little program, and so far the machine is working as it was advertised!!!

Fantastic find! I just did all as described and it has been connected for a good 30mins so far and no disconnects and/or reboots! LOVE IT!

I wrote you an email and wrote you two posts but you ignored me. I'm happy to help people writing solutions on my blog. I wrote something by myself and sometimes I take, solutions on other sites (normally in english) and I translate into Italian to diffuse them.
Every time I take a solution on other sites I put a link to the source, as in your case... there are also thanks to you and Fregosa... did you read it again? I never said it was an invention of mine... I'm not used to take works made by other people and pass them as mine.
I'm sorry you do not understand it, but it is not my fault... maybe italian to english translations do not work very well.
WHat if I dont use any taskkiller? would I have a problem with Liveview?

There is no need to use takskiller, it is just an option because some people are using that.

This evening I tried "Task Killer" configuration on my Galaxy Tab and I need to say that works a lot better than "minfreemanager".
I'm writing another post on my blog to allow italian user to get it, I'm also making a few screenshoot to allow a better understand of the configuration step, feel free to take them (when the article is ready) and put them here
Now I'm sure that the only problem on no-sonyericsson device is the managing of the memory and of the apps in background
what i mean is what step above i need to do if I dont use task killer
I never use one
in case i want to buy Live View, would i have a problem with the disconnection? or not?

I do not use any task killers. But to answer your question the connectivity issue still remains, even with this fix. You'll need to live with this issue for now until Sony Ericsson addresses the issue or some dev here can come up with a permanent fix.

Acctualy I think You got me wrong. The optional configuration with Task Killer contains everything that the regular option does so:
1. Delete LiveWare Manager
2. Instal MinfreeManager (keep in mind that it requires root premissions). I recommend using Mild/Agressive preset but you have to change Secondary Server values very low (for example 6mb).
3. Use this solution http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=493 posted by adolfotregosa.
AND:
4. Install Advanced Task Killer, set Security Level in Options to Low and then set following processes to ignore:
a) com.android.providers.drm
b) LiveViewApplication
c) OpenWatch
d) com.android.bluetooth
+ all of the processes from plugins you have (they have "liveview" in their name)
So as You can see in both configurations MinFreeManager is used, but the optional configuration is enriched with Advanced Task Killer.

It sad but it's true. This is just a PARTIAL fix, which makes LiveView more or less usable (sometimes it is great, sometimes You just want to threw it out) it will not make all of connection issues dissapear. But I have to say that with the newest firmware update vie SE Service Update and with this fix it is really good.

Shoot I didn't even know they released a new firmware update. I have my unit at work so I won't be able to update and test until next week. Lockeon, is the update pretty straightforward? D/L the update software, select x10 mini, connect usb, press both top buttons and that should connect it right?

Yup, just do everything You mentioned and it will update the device, at the end it will give You "Instalation failed" message, but don't worry next time You connect liveview and run service update it will display that You have the newest firmware.
Task manager is to be used because when Android goes down of memory it kills background processes, included bluetooth manager and LV plugin applications. This is why LiveView Application loses connection, it does not find bluetooth process until you do not try to connect LV again and Android re-activate it.
To be sure that memory is not managed by Android I set Auto kill frequency to 30' and at Crazy level... then I do not have disconnections

Acctualy that is not entirely true, because if You open some kind of game or use flash in browser it will eat your memory faster than Advanced Task Killer can free it, and You will lose connection with LiveView. To reconnect You would have to start LiveView Application once again. To prevent Android from killing bluetooth manager and LiveView stuff it is important to set Secondary Server values to very low (that is why MinFreeManager is needed). Advanced Task Killer helps keeping high RAM level better than MinFreeManager which prevents phone and liveview from lagging but it won't protect LiveView and bluetooth stuff from beeing killed by Android.

Yes, you are right. As you can read in my last blog post I say to make your first procedure as first step (not real, first step is LV update ).
The secondo step on my post says:

I have a doubt: when I open MinfreeManager I always get default values instead of the one I set. Is it right or is there something wrong in my "root"?

After a lot of investigation and searching, I eliminated connection problems with LiveView, but it still remains almost unusable, because its damn "LiveView Application" crashes the whole phone randomly. Where is that famous "linux stability" if one small app can easily crash the whole OS...
I've found out already, that this happens if the application's process gets killed by Android (thanks to XDA forum, I managed to correctly setup task killers). I googled for solutions, and found these:
1 - "There isn't a way to prevent this directly, without a rooted device." - SO! There IS a way to prevent this on a rooted devise! Does anyone know about it?
2 - "The app needs to put itself in the Notifications bar in order to keep from getting killed when it's in the background. This is what apps like Music or Pandora do in order to keep playing music and not get killed when they are backgrounded" - well, is there some tool to selectively "give" some running app the notification bar icon? Because if we wait for SE to implement this, we may as well wait for Apple to produce iPhone watch
3 - "HOWTO: Change Process Priority Using the Nice Command" - I'm not quite sure if this applies to Android, but I've found it on Motorola Droid forum...
Well, is there a developer ready to look into this? After all, ALMOST everything is working fine, the only thing that needs to be fixed - keeping process alive no mattaer what...

Is the builtin app named "Storagemanager" a hidden system administrator in LineageOS 19.1?
I ask this because in LineageOS 14.1 Storagemanager is a systemadministrator app.
In LineageOS 14.1 under > settings > apps > special app access > deviceadministrators, nothing showed up by default, but then i pressed the three dots on the top right and selected "show system", then storage manager was shown as active system administrator app.
I had the option to disable it, which i did, as i dont want ANY app to be administrator as i consider myself as the device owner being the administrator in place, no need for an app to have any such administrative permissions.
Now in LineageOS 19.1 when you navigate to > settings > apps > special app access > deviceadministrators > the three dots on the top right corner to show system apps ARE GONE.
This makes me think storage manager is a secret/hidden system administrator that cannot be disabled in lineageOS 19.1 because the three dots at the top right have been removed in 19.1 basically making it IMPOSSIBLE to the device owner to remove unwanted systemadministrator apps.
If infact storagemanager is a secret systemadministrator app, why is that so, why was the option to disable this app from being a system administrator removed??

Another question, in LineageOS 14.1 when i tried to open the calendar app, there was a prompt/popup saying "to use the calendar app you must add atleast one google account to your phone".
To be honest that scared me... considering that i use LineageOS purely for privacy and Google is the opposite of privacy.
That being said please keep in mind (this is very important), in LineageOS 14.1 when i opened the calendar app i was asked to add a Google account...
Here comes the things, in LineageOS 19.1 when i open the calendar app the prompt/popup says this: "before you can use the calendar app you must add atleast one calendar account".
That sounds very suspicious to me, because in 14.1 it was called google account and now in 19.1 its called callendar account, obviously my question is now... is the callendar account a google account just being called out in another way...?? If yes this is obviously a major manipulation because not naming google here will trick most likely any LineageOS user to creating a callendar account without even knowing that in reality what they just did was to create a goolge account on their privacy phone...... what sort of manipulative person would make such a nightmare come true? At this point i must ask if LineageOS even is a privacy option anymore... or has it been inflitrated by google already...
Another suspicous change i detected after switching from LineageOS 14.1 to 19.1 is that under > settings > apps > special app access > useage access, zero apps are listed, but once i pressed the three dots in the top right corner, bluetooth, media storage, nfc service, package installer, permissions controller, phone services, shell, storage manager, and systemui where ALL shown as "access to useage data = allowed". This really makes me woonder what is going on with LineageOS, what reason is there to grant all these apps access to useage data by default?? In LineageOS 14.1 there was not a single app even the system ones, that had useage data access set to allowed, infact in 14.1 all apps where set to be not allowed to access useage data. What is going on here and why??
Another change i noticed from LineageOS 14.1 to 19.1 is that under > settings > privacy, in 14.1 i was able to edit individual app permissions and enable or disable the privacy mode, in 19.1 there seems to be a new service so called "trust" which is responsible for privacy, im fine with that, however i am missing a very important privacy setting that was present in 14.1 but is not in 19.1 and that is "start on boot". On 14.1 i was able to select any specific app and deny or allow it's access to start itself on boot. Why is this important setting not present in 19.1?
In 19.1 under > settings > privacy > permissions manager, there is no option to deny apps to "start on boot".
My guess is, either 19.1 blocks all apps from starting on boot by default, or it allows it by default for all apps and there is simply no option to stop that which would be a major privacy downgrade compared to older versions...

Hmmm. I don't have answers to your specific questions. In another thread, you posted, generally, that most people don't care about your concerns. Very true. I wholeheartedly support you advocating your views; however encourage you to tread lightly if you want people to reply to you.
The only sure answer to your situation, and for me, also, is to grab the source of the rom which suits you, one without gapps, and then hire a dev to help go through the source to answer your questions. Then edit as needed and re-compile.
I am familiar enough with the process in general however don't have the skills to do it myself. LOS and its variants are probably a good place to start. I am using a vanilla build of RROS on A10 on a Oneplus8 pro. Since we have tools for A11 that is good but the tools generally aren't available for some time after a new Android release.
Your question might be asked of the Lineage devs, though I am sure they are busy and they are not forcing you to use their (free) product. There are also Linux phones available, although so far the hardware I have seen is not great.

This would be expensive. I, for one, would contribute. If we found 10 or 20 like minded people a crowdfunding page could be set up. To tell the truth, G keeps putting more obstacles in the way of modders and I am getting to the point where its not worth the trouble. Hopefully the hardware for Linux phones will improve.

My knownledge on programming is very limited, i would not be able to contribute to any meaningful software really. Indeed my language can quickly become not so nice when it comes to privacy, i don't like how the masses throw away their freedom.
Think about it, google chrome holds around 60% market share, then combine all chromium browsers and we are at around 90% while Firefox is at around 4%. Then think about how many people use Gmail and how many use privacy alternatives like Protonmail. Think about how many people use the standard google android os on their phone and how many have iphones and compare that to how many people use a linux phone or a custom os like lineage or graphene...

I use yewtu.be over youtube.com to avoid google.
See, google chrome and google search know all of your browsing history, there is no privacy, they make a profile of everyone who uses any of their services. Even if you use google without an account chances are they can identify you and your device. Same with gmail... it reads (scans) all of your emails and sell the content to adverstisers. I don't know how people can be ****** enough to use these services when you can simply switch to alternatives that are working perfectly flawless and don't spy on you.
Privacy can be easy.
Instead of google chrome > Firefox or even better Librewolf
Instead of google search > brave search or duckduckgo

Nobody forced me to use lineageos obviously i installed it on my own, i don't like the changes from 14.1 to 19.1 as they seem very suspicious to me, but i will still preffer LOS at any time over the standard google crap.
Before using a google phone id rather not use a phone at all.
Speaking about phones, people who buy iphones have lost their mind, i mean it.
My phone is a samsung S7, as long as it is functional i will not buy a new phone, besides i don't have the money now... your suggestion sounds interesting but i'm not into that really.
In the mean time i will repeat what you said, we can only wait for linux phones to support modern hardware and get one of those in the future.
GrapheneOS seems like the best choice as of now but it's really ironic that it works only on google pixel phones...
Most people don't care that they are been spied on. They are after the they easy life. Want all the mod cons to make things easier. Unfortunately you can't change peoples habits. Have started seen a lot of custom rooms with suspicious files, that makes a person wonder if google is paying the devs to include their software.

The librem 5 has outdated hardware and is expensive, but that's not the problem... the shipping times are totally ******. Can take years for you to ever recive that phone.
Besides, that doesn't anser any of my above questions about LOS, guess that wasn't your intention anyways.

about your privacy related inquiries, i recon that Lineage, while it used to stand for privacy in the first years, it started to be seen more as a way to get updates on no longer supported devices. and given that almost every user that uses lineage also had flashed gapps, makes sense for them to add gapps in their everyday custom rom as well. Google has its sets of downsides and upsides. Privacy is good, but functionality is more important. a lot of good apps rely on google implemented functionality. Say that i would need to drive around the country. Privacy is my preference, but i need a fully functional bugless waze. Waze without google play services is a mess, if you get it working. Android Auto without gapps isnt possible.
For my devices, at least, Lineage did not have gapps baked in. For me, a good thing. There are a few vanilla roms left out there. Even without gapps, there are still leaks to google (the captive portal connectivity check, for one) but the footprint is much smaller.
For me, I have found open source alternatives to ALL of googles bloat and spyware. Not as convienient, sure. Pain in the a** sometimes, yes. Wayze? Host your own cameras, use openstreetmap (osmand) instead. google has made it very convienient with their ecosystem. I, for one, do not wish to share my life with them.

No idea why people use gapps or microg, it's anti privacy so i do not ever use any of that.
I do not use any google services in my life and i don't miss them or need them for anything, i have alternatives.
I have to disagree on this phrase "Privacy is good, but functionality is more important".
If you are forced to give up privacy to use a service or product then the service or product is not worth being used.
Privacy is way more important than functionality, besides 90% of the time you can find perfectly working privacy friendly alternatives for almost anything.
Instead of google maps for example i use these:

My lineage version also doesn't have gapps in it, atleast nothing that is visible or accessable to me..
Not sure about the calendar thing described above..

I beleve LOS uses Googls SUPL Server's too.

Every time your device makes a network connection (wifi or cellular) it pings "connectivitycheck.gstatic.com". Not really a ping, its a http request to check for internet connectivity. Successful completion will remove the "x" by the wifi and/or cell data icon. Although if the address is blocked on your router the "x" will remain, and your device will complain about not having internet access....but it does! (so long as your wifi router/cell net has access). But wifi calling won't work.

I have all google domains blocked on my wifi so to keep my wife happy I disable the check on her phone also so she does not get the "no internet" notification.
Another hole is the agps (assisted gps) database downloaded from google or your phone carrier regardless of enabled location. I believe you can edit the server which is contacted, again, will require root.

Rob Braxman is great, watching all of his content. But i couldn't find any instructions to disable googles SUPL.

From my experience with his videos he acts as if degoogled phones with lineage are 90% better than normal phones, so i guess the other 10% are things like SUPL and captive portal connectivity check which are not that easy to disable..? If google knows my locations on a degoogled device with lineageos by using captive portal connectivity check then hell, that#äs really disturbing i had no idea that they still know where my phone is / where i am, very scary...

Yes, the command needs root. Also there are some differences based on your version of Android.

1. Editing (removing) the supl entry in the APN file, what affect, if any;

3. the big question, which GPS radio chips may or may not have SUPL on the hardware level and therefore, if so, we are unable to fix.

I just tried using your solution for the onnectivitycheck.gstatic.com issue by using the provided command
:/ # settings put global captive_portal_mode 0
Before i that i rooted the phone with magisk, the command did not work (i attempted executing the command on cmd in windows inside the adb/fastboot folder, usb drivers are also installed.
I was able to start the daemon by using adb devices but the command you provided didn't work.
The phone was booted normally during the test, maybe i should instead go to downloadmode or recovery mode? The link you send for more instructions says we should use a cmd app on the phone to exectue this command (a pc is not mentioned), however i don't find any cmd app on the phone (lineageos 19.1).

No, the command is made from a root shell on the phone directly, or through an adb shell.
First:
open a cmd window on your pc, cd to your adb folder. Do you have "minimal adb and fastboot" installed on your pc? Its on the forums here.
Plug in your phone to USB, do not boot to recovery or download mode. Just the normal system.
From the open cmd window, issue "adb devices". What appears?
If "unauthorized", you have to enable adb debugging in developer options. You have that enabled, right? If you do you will get a prompt on the phone to allow adb debugging access when you connect over USB.
If you get "device XXXXX", I do not recall the number of characters, then you can proceed.
issue "adb shell"
you should get a shell prompt (your phone cmd shell)
Issue "su"
If you are rooted magisk may prompt you to allow root
issue "whoami", this has to return "root".
Then issue the command I gave you. " settings put global captive_portal_mode 0"
The second string "settings list global | grep portal" is only to verify the success of the first command.
You don't need adb for this, you can also enable the "local terminal" in developer options. Or use your favorite terminal. I like Termux.
Open the terminal from your app drawer
issue "su"
Again, you should get a magisk prompt requesting permissions, allow it

then issue the same two commands.
