Upgrade broke the GPS - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I have a note 2 shg-i317 that was originally on Bell in Canada. It was unlocked and the aws mod done to it, I use freedom mobile, aka T-mobile in the states.
I was running a Rom for the past 3 years Slimfast 4.4 and liked it. I had tried Nugat on another phone, thought I would try the [ROM][7.1.2][OFFICIAL] LineageOS for N7105
I did the upgrade, broke the root, could not get a few things working, so I decided to restore the Slimfast backup I had just made (complete including modem etc) and everything works except the GPS.
GPS for me is huge, I use it a lot. I cannot lock on to 1 satellite now. Before i was able to lock onto a minimum of 16 in about 30-45 seconds, if outside.
I really dont care if I can get to 7.1 at the moment. I need my GPS back - any troublshooting for getting GPS to work on this phone?
James

I would try to flash the original stock for your phone and country from sammobile. com
Gps should work normaly then. If not your hardware is broken. If it works you can always flash your data back from your Slimfast rom.

Crap, I am posting here, because I did it again. Again not sure how. I tried to run Reserection, and I guess that messed up the GPS.
To put the original stock rom on.. I have to do that through ODIN? I dont remember how I fixed this last year.. Sorry.
Hope somone can help I need the GPS.
James
ps. Used odin 3.09 to flash the original rom... still no GPS

You flashed the latest 4.4.2 room?

The Rom that I flashed to try and restore the GPS was I317MVLUDNF1_I317MOYADNF1_BMC (mine was an originally BELL phone)
But that did not repair the GPS from me flashing resurection.. I THINK did it. I flashed an android 6 and an android 7 rom. (Mokee) but tried to go back to my Slimfast.. and the GPS was now broken.
Basically what I did a year ago.. somehow I fixed it then.. but cannot remember at all how I did it.
James

The note 2 sold by Rogers, Bell, and Telus are exactly the same model and stock roms from these carriers can be cross flashed.
Try flashing the stock ROM twice in Odin with a factory reset in between each flash.

Do you mean boot up the rom.. run the reset in the rom? or flash.. - load TWRP back in.. WIPE.. then FLASH again with odin?
Thanks for helping btw.
James

I have backups (complete all partitions) of my rom.. Slimfast 4.4 from 2-3 days ago.. when I tried this. SO.. if I can get the Factory rom to restore the GPS.. how can I restore the backup.. I saw somewhere that the EFS partition could be left out and that might help? dont restore the modem? how??
James

I meant flash with Odin, boot into stock recovery, factory reset, flash again with Odin, boot into stock recovery, factory reset, and boot into the stock ROM.

Nope, still no GPS lock.. I have the flashing circle (always had) and it will not lock.. I read about where people go into a service mode and rebuild the NV? .. I assume this is something that Mokee or Reserection did.. not sure how.
Any other ideas?
James

what about using Odin or TWRP to put different modems in? does the modem effect the GPS?
tried this.. does not seem to. grrrrr wish I knew how I fixed this.
James

I assume there are no loose wires. Does it get a lock when using wifi? Not sure what else to suggest.
Not sure about rebuilding NV.

No.. I broke it with playing with custom roms.. Liniage was last year.. I did not try that this year.. but tried both android 6 reserection and android 7 Mokee.. and I am pretty sure they messed it up.. I am also pretty sure there was something I did .. easy like load an old STOCK rom and it fixed it.. I was then able to put my slimfast 4.4 back over it and it was fine. Unfortunatly .. not enough people still using this device.. I will have to have patience I guess.
James

So I have tried differenct stock roms, but I think the issue is ODIN will not restore code from a rom image that is HARDWARE based. I wanted to use Samsung smartswitch but they disabled the part of it that allowed you to factory reset the phone, this seemed to work for several people. Many have also reported entering a code and going into a service mode.. there you can do to a menu that will rebuild hardware modules back to default. But I have not been able to get into that mode because it seems to be a touchwiz only option, and I cannot find a factory rom that is touchwiz based for this model.
What needs to be done is a true FACTORY ROM image.. that would revert all software and hardware back to original, but I cannot seem to find that anywhere.
James

The only factory roms that I know of come from places like sammobile.com and they are all based on TouchWiz which is Samsung's launcher.

So guess what? put Ressurection back on.. and the GPS is back.
I cannot get it to work in any KitKat based rom.. but now anything Marshmellow up.. works.. HMMMMMM

Lost GPS ? And how to get it working again.

I have seen a variety of posts in various threads about people not being able to get GPS connections and blaming the ROM they were on the for the problem - I imagine that sometimes that could be the reason but something happened to me recently that makes me wonder...
I am a flashaholic - often going back and forth between various ROMS via Nandroid back ups - all was good - then recently I noticed my GPS wasn't working. I thouht it was the rom - but no matter what I did I could not fix it. I tried installing other roms - totally clean install - I tried flashing back to rooted stock and no matter what I tried, GPS did not work.
I don't know where I saw it, but I finally saw a post from someone who suggested fixing it by going back to stock via odin - I tried that and it didnt work either - digging a little deeper someone suggested using odin to going back to pure stock then go into settings and do a factory restore.
I tried it - and it worked - took me virtually all day to figure it out - but it is working better than ever now - I wish I knew what caused it in the first place - but at least I found a somewhat reasonable solution.
If you have lost your GPS and can't get it working again - give it a shot -
Does anyone else have any other suggestiions that might work?
This is correct. I had this exact same issue and this worked for me as well.

Do you know why it happend in the first place? Was it the result of a specific Rom or just flashing in general?
Thats what i found that worked for me too. It only worked after i went into settings and reset the phone after odin.

I recently lost my GPS after flashing a Sprint-based ROM. Unfortunately, ODIN back to stock and factory reset from the Settings menu (and from recovery) did not bring back my GPS.
However, I followed a suggestion from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923067
I used ODIN to go back to a rooted stock ROM, installed CWM, installed the Sprint-based ROM that seemed to have been the source of the trouble. My GPS started working again. I then used CWM to restore a stock nandroid backup I had from earlier and GPS continued to work thereafter in any ROM I flashed.
There may be a simpler process, but that's what worked for me.

Now that I thnk of it, I also had flashed a Sprint Based rom - that must have triggered my original issue - I explained what I did to restore my GPS at the start of this thread _ and it is similar to what you described - execept I did not odin to a SPRINT rom - I used ODIN to bak to pure stock - then did a factory restore - (and this second step is what seemed to do the trick) then I re-rooted and went backto my happy days of flashing roms - I haven't had an issue since.

Well...that may not be the cause but it's a common denominator. I did and I had to flash back to stock and factory wipe to get mine back.

It definitely seems to be a common element to most of these GPS issues. I'm not sure why, in some cases, all it takes is a factory reset in stock to fix it, while others have to re-install the Sprint ROM first. Either way, though, it seems like in most cases, it's user-fixable.
Got the GPS death syndrome today. Flashed a ton of stock ICS nandroid backups without any luck. Finally fixed it after flashing a Sprint JB ROM nandroid then back to ICS. Such a werid issue.

I have the same issue. Now to flash a stock rom using Odin, do you have to use the toolkit? Also where can I download a Rogers stock rom from?
finally after losing gps and reading thread after thread got it to work , thank you to the guys that personally try to help , dont know why it struck this time but it did , now i will try to bring it back to stock , again thanks , by the way the rom i was using to bring it back was serenity 1.1 which i use before but wouldn't stick...:good:

If your problem started after installing a Sprint-based ROM, then root your phone, install CWM and then install that same Sprint ROM. Your GPS will probably work after that. You can then restore a Nandroid backup of another ROM. That's how a lot of us were able to fix our GPS.

Wifi issue on AOSP Roms

Hi guys,
I have had the s2,s3,galaxy nexus, original note and i am used to flashing and modifying, but i have a serious issue with the note 2.
The problem is whenever i flash AOSP rom(cm,aokp,pa) my wifi would not connect. It shows the name of the network and when i click conenct nothing happens.Flashing back TW rom fixes it,wifi works like a charm. I've done full wipes but it doesn't seem to resolve the issue.I tried different kernels, but that doesn't help either.
So I am stuck at TW roms and i hate that.Anyone has any ideas?
You can try options 2 and 3 from this thread.
Thanks for your reply, but i tried this and it didn't solve my problem.
Anyone?

Not sure that it will help you but I read something yesterday about this issue.
The solution was to NOT restore your Google profile during first boot so you should full wipe and try again.

This actually has nothing to do with the problem.
After a few days I finally found the cause ,and therefore,a decision to the problem.
It is the bootloader from 4.3 sammy leaks. It seems that this new leaks(probably the reason being KNOX) cause malfunction of wifi in aosp roms. What i did was ODIN flash stock MG1 from sammobile .This brought back stock recovery so i had to flash TWRP again and it solved the issue for me.
Before that i had tried changing roms, kernels, recovery, modems and nothing worked so I am pretty sure it is the new 4.3 leaks bootloader.
Some people will say that it can\t be the issue because they are using 4.3 sammy and do not experience the same problem on aosp roms, but i think thats because they flash it through CMW ,which doesn't change bootloader, while flashing through ODIN does.
With my Note2 this is not the solution. I've tried everything. What you said, move file "pit" ..... but nothing. I can not connect wifi. The connection does not appear region Spain, and have opted to choose europe, but neither. I do not know to do. CM 10.1 also does not work WIFI. In Stock ROM or Custom ROM works fine fine, but in ROM CM 10.1, 10.2, AOKP don't work.

[Q] One problem or another

I am trying to find a fully functional rom. I have tried numerous roms and run into 2 or 3 of the same problems. What I need is working ? . Working Wifi. Working Camera. And working GPS. Most of the roms have given me a problem with the camera. For instance, I take a picture in a dark place and when the flash goes off I get a black screen and there is no display I am forced to pull battery as the phone will not reboot after. I have not had wifi or bluetooth problems in a long time so I can not comment on that. I recently tried Liquid Smooth's 4.4 rom and the camera works, however GPS will not work unless connected to WIFI which does me no good if it won't navigate. Has anyone found a rom out there that is fully functional? I do not have service on my device, which is d2spr by the way, so mobile data and 4g are not needed. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
If you want fully functional with no additional stuff except what you want, just use stock odex, latest firmware is NJ2, If stock untouched is giving you problems then you may have a messed up internal memory or something.
Wicked S5
Phone is Completely Screwed
So i flashed a MK5 Modem on my L710t due to the fact that my wifi and data were not working ... I though it would fix this ... before that on some roms, the wifi would work, but the data didn't ... and vice versa with other roms ... Carbon and LiquidSmooth to be specific. I can't seem to fix it .. so i tried Unrooting back to all stock everything ... and no matter what tar file i use i get a FAIL in Odin ... i tried three tar files and even tried the 1-click.exe. got an EPIC FAIL ... i tried flashing a stock MK5 deodexed rom because i had flashed a MK5 modem and the damned rom wouldn't boot ... I really just want to revert to a stock Virgin Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III with 4.4.2 and an N8 Modem or whatever modem it came out of the box with ... CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME ...
please and thanks
Thanks. It was a pain in the butt to get it installed as I had to update to ND8 but I think this is is quite functional and what I was hoping for will see in a few days how the system reacts but so far the camera works and i am bout to test gps. So thank you for recommending the Wicked S5.

OH1 recovery image -or- help getting back to stock firmware

Hi folks. Admitted Noob here asking for help.
[backstory]
After many years resistance I finally decided to get a phone. Freedompop's free plan was enough to push me over the fence. Found a nice S3 (L710VPUDOH1) on ebay and bought it. Everything was fine...except the stock rom had so much crap in it I was about to have a seizure. Back in the day I had put CM on a nookcolor so I thought that was the way to go. I consulted with a friend who assured me that CM played nicely with freedompop so down the rabbit hole I went.
[the first sign of trouble]
Installing CM went fine. Odin. Heimdall. I installed the latest clockwork mod touch recovery (6.0.4.5). Then I installed the latest CM snapshot (cm-12.1-20151117-SNAPSHOT-YOG7DAO1K7-d2spr.zip) and the appropriate gapps. Worked great. Nice and fast, good configuration options, no bloat....but it couldn't connect up to the 3g/4g network. Freedompop worked as long as WiFi was on and would not otherwise. Crap. What's the point of a cell phone if I have to have a WiFi hotspot???
Some googling revealed that the APNs were wrong so I tried that route. I was able to get LTE working but never got 3G. I live out in the boonies, so 3G is kinda important. Also found that CM breaks Sprint's PRL auto update which doesn't seem too happy.
[^H^H^H^H^H]
So, I decided to go back to the factory ROM and see how FP worked as I dutifully made a backup before installing CM. Now the SHTF. When I restore from backup in CWM (followed by a factory wipe data and cache to avoid the boot loop) the ROM cannot connect to Sprint's network. Doesn't know its IEMI or much of anything. It does connect up to wifi, log into my google account, get my paid apps, etc....but still no phone.
I installed Kies and attempted to restore/upgrade firmware (non-emergency mode). Kies got to about 66% and said there was an unexpected error. I'm guessing it didn't like the custom recovery and just plain quit on me. Was worried that I'd made a brick but alas I could still get to download mode. </bullet dodged>
I would like to put the phone back to stock (including recovery) but I have no factory recovery image. Does anyone have a recovery image for L710VPUDOH1? Alternatively, is there any harm in flashing the full ND8 onto the phone even though it had OH1 running before? I seem to remember reading things about bricking phones when trying to downgrade....which is in effect what I would be doing.
Any other suggestions about how to get back to stock would be most appreciated.
TIA
You can flash nd8. Nj2 is newer though. I don't think anyone has captured the oh1 tar yet. The only thing you should not do is flash anything before nd8 (pre Knox) like mk3 or older. Which is jellybean anyways so....
Hope this helps.
Yes, thank you; that was exactly what I needed to know.
I have a working phone at the moment so stock is not necessary required. For others that may be interested I flashed in Wicked X 8.2. From there the phone once again knew its IMEI and I was able to carrier reset and get it activated with Freedom Pop.

Hi
XDA newbie, still learning where everything is! I posted this question in the general help thread but got no replies, then I found this section so please pardon the repost
I have a rooted Galaxy Note 2 N7105 (t0lte I think) running Samsung Stock software 4.4.2. I have previously installed various version of CyanogenMod and Ditto Note, and somewhere along the line have lost my GPS functionality! Running CWM recover, not sure what version off the top of my head. The exact issue is that when I turn GPS on, it shows the "searching" symbol endlessly and will not lock to any satellites.
I have tried reflashing the modem and every GPS fix app that I've seen suggested on forums, and it still will not lock my location by GPS. Power saving (wi-fi and mobile network) location still works.
From my research, I believe the NV Rebuild method (listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2211690) is what I need to do in order to fix the problem. However when I access the hidden dialer menu and select NV Rebuild it tells me "Not Support in Custom Binary!" Other people have had this issue and posted asking for help in the thread, but nobody replied or helped them.
As I mentioned, I am running stock Samsung software, not a custom ROM. The phone is rooted, and I do have a few Xposed modules installed. I also used Triangle Away and my bootloader shows the device status as Samsung Official. It also showed Official in settings when I tried to run the NV Rebuild. As far as the information went, this should be all I needed to make NV Rebuild work, but it still gave the custom binary error.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get around this? Do I need to completely unroot my phone and reflash a vanilla copy of Samsung 4.4.2 before it will work, or is there a workaround to make the service menu read my phone as official and run the NV Rebuild?
Any thoughts or ideas would be HUGELY appreciated as this issue has been driving me mental! (Please let me know if you need further information and I will try to provide it ASAP)
Thanks in advance!

Try lineageOS 14.1. My GPS was dead after going back to kitkat after lineage. NV rebuild also not support in custom binary. Found the solution here https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...nt-n7105/rom-lineageos-n7105-t3538310/page136
From lineage I did only a format(not wipe or factory reset, I dont know what is the difference) in TWRP 3.2.3 and flashed zip of the omnirom kitkat, and GPS was working, then format and flashed official FTM ROM. Maybe not need to go via omnirom, for me it was clear that kitkat is not getting the fix and it was easier to flash a zip kitkat than an image from Odin.

Your solution gains my interest. I am using GT-N7105 too. The road of Roms I have been through is Lineage 14.1 -> Resurrection Remix 5.8.5 -> Stock 4.4.2
When I went back to the Stock rom, GPS totally unable to detect any satellite using any GPS tools app. IMEI blank but Baseband is still there, the weird thing is the phone network signal works without issue.
Have been trying many ways to fix GPS including reflash stock rom but still failed. I went back to resurrection remix 5.8.5 and GPS works without issue but IMEI is still blank.
Any recommended omni rom as you mentioned? and what is official FTM rom? A stock rom?
