Back camera not working/Flashlight not activating on stock, custom ROM or safe mode - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I've been having quite a few problems with my month-old HTC 10, specifically with the camera (and the WLAN coverage, but at least that's working somewhat!) I finally unpacked it last week and have spent the whole week since attempting to fix the "Camera has stopped/Unable to connect to camera" problem. The selfie camera, however, is perfect and can be used in other apps, but attempting to switch to the camera on the back results in a freeze/force close. Considering I decided on the HTC 10 because of the camera quality, I'm a bit disappointed so far. A google search reveal a number of people having the same problem, but no real solution. Here's what I've done so far:
- Set up phone, comes with Nougat 7.0. Camera works at first, though seems to have problems with the auto focus. Camera app then updates overnight and stops working. Clear data/cache, remove updates, hard reset - no good. Flashlight does not work either, simply says "loading..." and stays like this indefinitely until closed.
- Factory reset, no change. Switch to safe mode, no change. Decided to unlock bootloader and install custom ROM after hearing that would fix it (I know, I know...I should have just sent it back at this point). Install Viper 5.10 + root with magisk, camera and flashlight still not working. Safe mode, not working. Full wipe in TWRP, RUU back to stock firmware (CID: HTC_034, flashed 2.41.401.3 signed firmware). Set up phone again on stock firmware, still no change in camera or flashlight.
- Install LeeDroid 10 3.7.0 custom ROM, root with magisk. I get a breakthrough here; turning off "OK Google" in settings gets the camera and flashlight working again! Still have the "laser autofocus blocked" issue, but I figure I'll deal with that later. Backed up with TiBu.
- Next day, decide to use a ROM that includes the latest security patches (got a bit annoyed waiting for HTC to push out the European updates, still on 1st January patch) so went for Resurrection Remix. Wipe, clean install etc. Camera stops working again, no change in safe mode. Wipe, clean flash back to LeeDroid, camera is no longer working, in normal mode or safe mode.
- Went through a bunch of custom ROMs at this point; ICE, Dirty Unicorns, LineageOS, then decided to try RR, LeeDroid and Viper again - camera still not working in normal mode or safe mode. With the ROMs that required GApps, used every package in both Open GApps and Dynamic GApps to install. No change to camera, Google Camera was unable to start as well.
- Flashed upgraded RUU (2.41.401.4 signed firmware) and went through the process of wipe/clean install custom ROM/test camera with all the above custom ROMs in normal mode and safe mode. No change in camera, though the ROMs were all excellently made
At this point I'm pretty stumped If it was a hardware problem, why did it work when I first installed LeeDroid, but not after? It's not been mishandled, it's just been sitting on my desk since I got it. The fact that it doesn't work in safe mode would suggest to me that ,maybe, a camera driver has been deleted somewhere along the way? I also tried a load of other methods I found on various message boards; flash it with no SD card inserted, flash without SIM card installed, etc. but absolutely nothing works.
Third party camera apps also don't work; most simply crash on starting. Open Camera says "Unable to access camera. Maybe being used by another app?", so I tried removing the permissions of all apps that had access to the camera except the camera itself - no change. Deleted cache/data/preferences of all apps - no change.
Finally, I had a look at the HTC diagnostics test using *#*# 3424 #*#* on the dialler - the camera test doesn't even show up! :crying:
I've run out of things to try at this point, so I'm posting this here to see if anyone can possibly shed some light on this very strange situation. Is there something I can do to fix it? Or should I start begging Amazon to give me a refund? Unfortunately I'm a week outside their 30 day return window...lesson learned for next time; if in doubt, send it back!

Oops, meant to post this in the Q and A forum. Don't want to spam a duplicate, is it possible to move it over?

Hardware issue. Contact HTC for a replacement. sounds like it may just not be connected. I had one with no working vibration notification, the motor would turn on, you could hear it, but the phone wouldn't vibrate. Got it replaced ASAP! I recommend you do the same!

Same issue here. The only thing that works for me (so far) is flashing back to a Marshmallow rom. HTC has been completely silent on this issue in terms of actually fixing the problem. They know the problem is there for only a small number of us and so aren't going to do anything about it. Fine. This was my first and will be my LAST htc phone. Buh bye htc, you'll never get another dime from me.

Did you fix the issue, coz i have the same in my HTC 10

Hi
follow my post in anildsouza73 blog..I will show how to fix it if someone really spoiled it...have a good day..

from yesterday morning the problem appeared to me. Initially, the difficulty in focusing, then rebooting the impossibility of opening the camera app and the flashlight. I found on Youtube the videos that showed the same problem. Is there a solution today?

Hi all
I found if I cleared my flashlight cache and then the camera cache, soft reset phone I could get the camera working again. Only problem now is the autofocus is not working properly. Any ideas for that?

Same problem. Focus stopped working, then I cannot launch camera app. Anyone found a solution?

[Q] Camera Broken Upon Update?

Anyone else have the camera load to a blank black screen with no buttons in any and all apps that utilize the camera? Camera, Barcode Scanner, Sniper Shot, and all other programs that use the camera fail to load since the update. Anyone have any idea as to why?

Did you try a restart, I have heard of camera problems like this before (i think first FroYo update) and all it needed was a simple reboot.
Reboot didn't work. I reflashed the rom and BAM, it worked again. Crisis averted.
I have the same problem.
I'm running the following:
Azreal 3.0
circular battery widget update
removed HTC lock screen
superior battery charging kernel
wifi hotspot patch
I'm currently trying things to figure out what will fix it.
Here are the current things I have tried that did NOT fix the problem:
Reboot
Wipe cache/davlik cache
fix UID mismatches
I then reflashed azreal 3.0
At this point the camera worked again but everything was wiped. I then reapplied the following patches:
Circular battery
remove HTC lock screen
wifi/hotspot patch
after this everything continued to work
I then applied:
superior battery charging kernel and it broke again
I think the problem is the superior battery charging kernel
i am having the same problem and have not been successful yet fixing it. switched from cm7 back to stock to update my prl and tryed to use the camera while stock when the black blank screen happened. flashed to evdo(sense) and same result. flashed back to cm7 and the 1st time i opened camera it opened the ffc. when i tried to switch and everytime i have tried to open it since i get "camera error cannot connect to camera" help plz!
If you have HW 0004 phone or HW003 with the new camera, you have to make sure your rom has a kernel with the NEW drivers. The kernel in my signature has the new drivers for ASOP roms (like cm 7).
just flashed Savaged-Zen-V002-CFS-HAVS-SBC-WiMAX - GB.zip
with the same result running cm7. seems like ive tried 20 different things with no success. everything i have flashed has been off my sd meaning i have had all of it running before at one time or another with no problem. i really cant think of what ive done new to have caused this
Same here
Happened to me right after I flashed calkulins_format_all.zip and then the MikFroyo4.4.zip yesterday. I thought it was a problem with mikfroyo so I flashed Azraelz 3.1 and still the same issue (i was using azrael 3.0 with no prob prior to mikfroyo).
I'll post if I find anything that works, please also give any suggestions i'm willing to try anything b4 i take her to sprint.
I also flashed calkulins evio rom. When I flash back to stock it will start running again sometimes. Not even right away though. It will be black for a while then if I just let the phone sleep for a bit and come back to it bam. Camera again. For a little while. Then back to the same thing an hour later without doing anything! This is very frustrating! Someone plz help!

UPDATE
I turned my phone off and switched SD cards to one that has an old backup (3.29, kernel#11), when I booted into recovery, I could hear clicking noices coming from the lens, at a super fast rate (say 2-3 clicks a second).
Not wanting to do any more damage I turned off the phone.
I did just take my phone to sprint to fix my kick stand, maybe they did something to mess with me (thats just my paranoid side speaking)...
But what gives? What would make the camera shutter do that while im in recovery (btw using latest amon ra recovery)?

[Q] Camera not working

Hey,
I know there are a few threads on this but I haven't found one that followed through to a reported solution.
G2 rooted with CyanogenMod 6.1.1 since January of this year. Tried google goggles and the app locked up. I finally realized that was because the camera has stopped responding. When I pressed on the camera help, nothing changes for a few seconds, then it goes to a black screen. Eventually, (pressing on the back key helps) I'll get a force close/wait screen. Camera had been working fine the previous day.
I've tried clearing caches, using a different SD card with no changes. Used the opportunity to finally upgrade to CyanogenMod 7.0.3 and cleared all the caches as part of the flash. Tried the camera the first chance I could get the phone to that point. Same response from the camera (hesitate, black screen, force close).
So, is there anything else to try or is this a hardware camera failure?
Thanks for any help.
Try flashing some other rom. If that fails, then try flashing another radio.
I'd suggest taking a rooted stock rom and a stock radio just to be sure.
Thanks, but I'm trying to understand what any of that would do to fix the camera over what I've already tried.
I guess I'm looking for anyone that actually had a similar problem and either fixed it or failed to fix it.
Thanks.
Well for once the stock rom uses HTCcamera.apk to open the cam. Since you are using CM7 its a completely different apk.
Radio is somethign that is responsible for almost every device on your phone. Then the drivers that are in the Kernel, and then the ROM which has the apk, that uses the driver from the kernel to start the camera that is defined in the radio.
Well, nothing worked. Unrooted and back to stock (camera still doesn't work). Replacement phone is on it's way.

[Q] Back Camera not working with CM

This one has been giving me a headache all day.
Just got a GS3 from Sprint, obviously the first thing I did was throw on a custom recovery and flash Cyanogen. For some reason, no matter what version of Cyanogen I flash, no application can use my back camera. I have wiped all caches, fixed permissions, cleared the gallery cache (as some suggested) with no avail.
Here are the weird things: The front camera works. I can use it in any application, but the back camera always hangs or ends with a "Can't connect to the camera" error. In addition, if I factory default the phone, the camera works fine - so it isn't a hardware issue.
Would love some suggestions on how to proceed!
I really appreciate it!
As a follow up, I tried flashing my cam firmware with the ones found in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2006128 out of desperation. It resulted in my camera no longer working - even on the default rom unrooted.
:crying:

Rear camera not working

Hi, the rear camera and flash seem to not be working a few days after installing Viper on my M9. Camera worked for about 1-2 days after flashing latest Viper ROM, but then stopped altogether. Anything trying to utilize the flash also doesn't work (HTC and Google flashlight). I've tried wiping the camera's data & cache, and I flashed the upgraded camera software that is available on Venom Hub, still no luck. Launching the camera app shows a black screen for a few seconds, then crashes back to home screen with no error message. Front camera works fine. Service provider is Sprint. Recovery is TWRP. I know that I could likely get a functioning camera back by re-flashing the Viper ROM or another ROM, but that's time consuming, and I'd prefer to only do that as a last resort. Any help greatly appreciated!
There is no fast way. Reflash the rom over the top, it shouldn't erase anything as you are recovering, not upgrading. Otherwise you're looking at going back to stock to test.

this happened to me without any software change (that I know of) just a hardware change. I even bought and installed a new rear camera which now allows the use of the front camera but the rear is not detected in the app and the flashlight just loops forever with a "loading" message. I am also SPRINT

Camera issues- help needed

Hi all, I have tried hard to figure out my camera issues but I'm just going to have to reach out and ask for help. I have wiped/factory rest etc, I have completely reflashed the OEM image, I have flashed twrp and currently am running carbon rom and have root access to try to figure the issue out. When I launch the camera app it launches normally but there is no image just a black screen. If I flip the camera to front facing, same issue and same issue with video. It crashes shortly after launching. I have tried different camera apps and have not had any luck. Is there a permission I need to fix or a file that's corrupt and needs fixed/replaced? I can't seem to find anything about my specific problem. Seems most are third party app issues. Oh, speaking of which, the results are the same in safe mode. Sorry if this is not the right forum, hopefully I'm asking in the right place.
If the black screen occurs in both the stock ROM and custom ROM, then yours is a hardware issue. Otherwise, the custom ROM is the likely culprit.
