Zenfone 2 (ZE551ML) Random shut down - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Guys!
This week my Zenfone 2 started to have random shut downs, specially when runnig heavier apps. Inicially I could turn it back on, but now the phone shuts down even in the asus logo screen. It doesn't turn on in the safe mode, but it enters in the recovery mode. This happens at any batery level and when i put it on charge, it works normally. I was wondering if this is really a hardware problem or theres something i could do without sending the phone to some technical assistance. Thank you guys for any help

both may be the cause hardware or software or even malicious APP
first of all factory reset device if situation still the same try flashing raw firmware using commands method.
( do not use Asus flash tool for flashing raw it is highly unstable. there are chances that device may fail to reparation if that happens AFT exits the flashing and device bricks. in commands you can flash files even if repartioning command fails. hence very low chance of bricking.

I have done a factory reset, but the problem persists. I'm gonna try to flash raw firmware - i've never done it by commands method, but i'll search some threads about how to do it . I'm hoping that solves my problem :fingers-crossed: . Thanks man!

Yes brother, i have still same issue
Did you all try to use the .exe or did you use the fastboot command to flash this? If this does not work for you go to the CM thread, download that recovery file and use the same fastboot command in this thread. When you download the CM clockworkmod rename it to what the command says so it should be recovery_en.img

Everyone experiencing the no recovery or the exclamation mark on the recovery screen its because you tried to run the .exe or flash the recovery with a fastboot command WHILE IN HBOOT MODE. You need to be in fastboot to do this and your device bootloader has to be unlocked before you try anything root wise.
Mine does the same thing. When it enters recovery just hit reboot device and let it start up. It charges in 2-3 hours on or off as long as the screen isn't active.
Also, ANY device that you unlock the bootloader for will say Tampered. Its HTC's way of knowing if you unlocked the device, but that doesn't mean you can't return it. It is done through HTC though and you are allowed to relock it to return it.
If your device power button stops working HTC will take it back regardless of bootloader status as that's a hardware problem. If your phone is not charging properly that isn't a bootloader problem that is the software of Android and is valid for a claim.
If you try to flash an entirely different bootloader then they'll reject your device because you went further then to just "Tamper".
If it voided warranty to unlock the bootloader there would be no root apps on the Playstore allowed.

Yes it does say the exact same thing but the message actually states:
This build is for development purposes only.
Do not distribute outside of HTC without HTC's permission.
Failure to comply may lead to legal action.
No worries though, this message is automatically put there by HTC after unlocking the bootloader.
@jaysobitzed
Yes.....that is the message i was talking about.......but to my side its coming even in charging mode while my phone iz off.......then directly goes into CWM mode...How about yours ??

[NEW UPDATE]:
IF YOU RECEIVE AN EXCLAMATION MARK ON THE RECOVERY SCREEN AFTER RUNNING THE .EXE THEN IT IS BECAUSE YOU NEED TO FLASH AN OLDER CLOCKWORKMOD FIRST!
POWER OFF YOUR DEVICE BY HOLDING VOLUME UP + POWER BUTTON FOR 15 SECONDS IF YOUR STUCK AND THEN POWER ON BY HOLDING VOLUME DOWN+POWER BUTTON AND YOU'LL GO BACK INTO THE BOOTLOADER.
ONCE YOUR DEVICE IS SET IN FASTBOOT USB MODE DOWNLOAD THIS FILE BELOW:
https://s.basketbuild.com/dl/devs?dl=Grarak/recovery.img
NOW SAVE THAT FILE WHERE THE ADB FOLDER / PLATFORM-TOOLS IS THAT YOU INSTALLED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE VIDEO IN (Local Disk C:/adb)
ONCE THAT'S COMPLETE GO INTO THAT FOLDER AND RIGHT-CLICK IN ANY WHITE AREA OF THE FOLDER AND PRESS "RUN COMMAND LINE HERE" & RUN THE FOLLOWING COMMAND:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
REBOOT TO RECOVERY AND CONFIRM!
NOW YOU CAN RUN THE .EXE IN FASTBOOT USB MODE AGAIN OR FLASH THE RECOVERY HERE FOR THE LATEST VERSION!
Done!

Hi mbwambo, I'm not sre aboput problem you face that "Bettery sign missing and power of ur phone "..but as you told, (it's n going to Recovery mode Or Hboot) You can able the fast boot option under settings > Power . then sytem will go automaticall into normal start up instead of going into recovery or Hboot mode. i had the same problem what you have. after checked in the fast boot it's simply restarts as usual in charging or not charging status. hope this would help ur restarting issue.
I've the same tampered, but still not enter into recovery mode....u r lucky at this case...now you root ur mobile
Thnx, SR

@mbwambo:
By going into your settings and checking fastboot it will stop the device from booting into recovery if put to charge when powered off. This will show the battery icon and no red text will appear.
@Sivasr:
Try the method I just posted it will work to get into the recovery. I have had some people ask me about that same issue and that solution has worked for them. Also, make sure to uncheck fastboot in Power - Settings!

@Sivasr
To unlock it again just use the same unlock.bin file you got in the email. Then use the recovery.img file I listed or go to the CM11 thread and download the recovery from there and use that one.
After you flash that old version you can go into it from the bootloader. Just go to advanced in the recovery, reboot to bootloader, and flash the new recovery with the .exe or with the recovery file from the CWM thread.
Done
You can't flash the recovery if it's still locked you are correct. If it seems frozen use the volume keys to navigate and power button to select.

Hi there.
Can anybody explain me, why my 816w (CWM v6.04.7) when I put it on charger after total battery discharge, turns on automatically and boots in recovery

This is a glitch with the old CWM recovery. If you use the one from the CM12 thread; 6.0.5.1 CWM then you will be able to avoid this issue. Only thing is instead of it booting into recovery it won't boot unless you remove it from the power source. Lol so you win some you lose some.

Tried everything but....

Hello guys,
I would like to ask for help as Im really desperate and tired of trying to get my phone back to normal state.
This is the case.
I can access fastboot mode, I can access recovery (TWRP or CM), I can install roms from recovery, I can sideload from adb, Ive formatted userdata, system, cache with fastboot commands etc etc etc... but every single rom that I install never gets to the welcome screen. Every single one keeps rebooting, freezing sometimes or just simply powering off my device.
Im really out of ideas, Ive also re-locked the bootloader then unlocked it again, force de-encryption because sometimes it gives me the message encryption unsucesfull.
Any input would be deeply appreciated.
EDIT: MANAGED TO SOLVED IT. ON TWRP, UNDER WIPE, SELECT DATA AND SYSTEM AND PRESS REPAIR FILESYSTEM!
This thread can be closed please.
Try the unbrick method see if that helps method 2
I´m willing to pay $20 whoever can get me out of this mess through skype, Im so done with this, been scratching my head all day long.

You should try flashing twrp again, make sure you have the proper firmware, and on ext4.

TWRP 3.1.1-0

TWRP for U Play
WARNING: SOME USERS ARE EXPERIENCING BOOTLOOP AFTER OTA UPDATING WITH TWRP.
DO NOT FLASH THIS RECOVERY INSTEAD USE FOR TEMPORARY BOOT IF YOU WANT OTA UPDATE
For direct booting without installation use
"fastboot boot twrp-3.1.1-0-alpine.img" in the bootloader menu (white screen )
If you want permanent installation follow these steps
NOTE: Please Check the partition table for your model and flash recovery to that block,
using wrong block can brick your device
use this command in terminal emulator or adb to check partition table
Code:
cat proc/emmc
for me its mmcblk0p39
Boot twrp from bootloader
Code:
fastboot boot twrp-3.1.1-0-alpine.img
now that your booted into twrp open adb and use these commands
Push Recovery Image to phone
Code:
adb push twrp-3.1.1-0-alpine.img /data/local/tmp
Set permission for recovery image
Code:
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/twrp-3.1.1-0-alpine.img
Backup Current Recovery Image (in case you want to go back or failed)
Code:
adb shell dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p39 of=/sdcard/backup.img
Copy recovery to block
Code:
adb shell dd if=/data/local/tmp/twrp-3.1.1-0-alpine.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p39

I've tried all of that I'm afraid as soon as it gets a bit of power the cycle happens and the PC doesn't have time to recognize the device before it reboots, it doesn't respond to the power key or any combination of key pressing, just keeps on in the boot loop. From what I've learned I'm assuming the problem is that 52MB TWRP image, it doesn't work on this phone, the update will be trying to boot the phone into recovery but because the recovery doesn't work it creates a bootloop..so far it's been 48hrs, will try switch it back on on monday as suggested here https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...g-failures-t3596427/post74189767#post74189767 . Hi, did you have any luck? I'm stuck in the same boot loop.. I even took off the case and removed the black battery cable over night but still same boot loop, did running down battery help?
Hi, don't dismantle it or any of that other stuff suggested above, let it bootloop til the battery is flat, leave it, do not charge it or do anything to it for 11+ days, then charge it and it will switch back on, no problem, you'll have your phone back.
Ok thanks, it's been about 5 days off so far from dying from the boot loop, I'll give it another 10 days before charging it and see how it goes..
Thanks again for your response..

Geez i wish haahwhahai would have a working erecovery. This is maddening.
I've been there before. I was able to use the method involving connecting / disconnecting the usb to get into fastboot, adb the recoveries, and reboot, being immediately prompted to factory restore. I don't know if that's helpful at all.

Do you have a link to this method of restoring kind sir?
Thanks!
If possible, turn the phone completely off.
Plug the USB cable into the phone
Hold vol down
Hold power and IMMEDIATELY plug the other end of the USB cable into the PC.
This should get you into fastboot. From here, you should be able to use ADB.
Here's the thread that helped me most.

What should i use after i'm in fastboot? I've downloaded the latest full firmware that's out there, but it seems to be corrupt.

I'm not sure how much you can do if the device is locked...A guess a few questions (In my tech support voice):
1.) How did it get to that point?
2.) Can you re-open the bootloader, and if you can, are you opposed to it?
3.) What was the last firmware you installed on it?

1) I don't recall.
2) I could probably unlock it again. i'll give it a try.
3) it had some weird restore that i used, but that rom didn't have any update option.
I must sound retarded....

Well most of the time, if it's a software issue, it's fixable. I don't know as much about this phone as I'd like, but I do know there's update packages out there you can use to your benefit if you can get the bootloader unlocked. I believe the Update.APP can even be unzipped or decompiled to get the main imgs from it, such as boot, recovery, and system.
im gonna go ahead and throw this out there. i just returned from the hardest brick i have ever done. i managed to make it so the phone wouldnt boot it would bootloop twice and go to erecovery and fail to restore. then i tried flashing the stock img's extracted from the update.app inside twrp and that made it worse. the screen went completely black and wouldnt do ****, the computer recognized it in bootloader mode but i couldnt flash a single thing as it would say i didnt have permission to or something like that(acting as if the bootloader was locked even though it was unlocked, or locked frp) i was about to give up and put my sim card back in my nexus as no matter what i did i couldnt get the screen to even turn on.
Well i found a post on the mate 9 sub-forum about someone who did the same thing and fixed it with dc-phoenix but costed him 18$, i decided 18 was worth it if it meant i had a working phone. and sure enough 5 minutes after paying and clicking flash update.app in the software it was up and running. now i have no idea how dc-phoenix can flash images when adb couldnt...but it works. if your out of options i would 100% say try it as 18$ is much better than a new phone.

something i did notice as the software did the commands to flash each image i noticed it started its commands with some kind of backdoor command. so maybe they know a backdoor to bypass a locked bootloader/frp

How to access EDL mode on g7 play?

How do you access EDL mode on this device? Fastboot oem blankflash does not work. It only returns a denied message. If your wondering why I need access to this mode it's so I can fix my baseband. I read somewhere here on xda that doing so may help me get the original baseband back.
Also require access to EDL mode, but can't find a way.
I have the same question...
Deep flash cables don't seem to work, although I just learned that I need to check the "ports" section of Windows device manager and not simply expect it to pop up like a new device normally would.
My G7 Play isn't bricked.
Not rooted, and no TWRP installed either.
I need to figure out a way to make a full disk image without destroying the data already present.
The options theoretically possible seem to be:
1. Root via exploit - I'm currently exploring the viability of privilege escalation from Ubuntu installed in Termux
2. Unlock the bootloader without formatting anything - Guides do exist for other phones, but I only get one chance to get this avenue right.
3. Enter EDL mode and backup the entire disk using Qualcomm's own software. - The easiest way (on paper), but the method to put this phone in EDL mode continues to elude me.
I'm aware of the typical three ways to get a Qualcomm device in EDL mode without bricking it...
Deep flash cable - doesn't seem to work, but I'll try again with freshly aquired knowledge.
ADB/fastboot command - I've tried all of them native to my device, and a few that were added from guides about other devices
JTAG "pins" - much more like pads than pins...
Can't find diddly about 'em.
Don't know if they exist on a G7 Play, or which two to short to each other if they are even there.
Anyone have a potential solution that i may have overlooked?
Not sure if this is what you need or not but here's s link for a PDF file that's chock fill of nerd stuff (schematics/pinouts/etc) regarding the g7 play (-4 variant, I think)
The term JTAG hits like 13 times so it might hey you in the right direction at least.

(I've been a member forever but this is my first post. Not sure if I can post links or not so just replace the above with drive.goog...etc...)
If you have any problems with the link PM me and we'll sort it out.
Good luck.

How to over think the simple things?
Thanks for the input gentlemen,
I'll hang on to the literature for future reference.
Turns out that I was wayyyyyyyy over thinking it.
Motorola's adb and fastboot commands (particularly on Qualcomm socs) is highly contextual.
When the documentation said 'adb reboot edl' that's what it meant.
Not from the booted os though.....
From recovery (SMH).
Simple as that for anyone else who's trying to take a full disk image without unlocking their bootloader
I think I'll still pursue a root exploit via termux though.
It could help a lot of folks out who don't have a solid root solution (Samsung users).
I'm too close to just forget about it anyway.
Seems to be working out like the old adb temp root, but with the possibility of automating the process into something less cumbersome.
Select slot_b from TWRP, then reboot into fastboot. You'll brick and go into EDL. I just did it last night on accident.
ok so i have the xt1952-t variant i have no stock recovery ive flashed in fastboot stock android 10 rom (XT1952-T_CHANNEL_RV_9.0_PCYS29.148-154-8_cid21_subsidy-TMO_SPR_RSU_QCOM_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml) everything flashed fine but it wont boot it says no baseband and ro.full build is blank. everytime it says unable to read non-hlos and kicks me back to fastboot. also bootloader is locked still i have my unique key but without being able to boot to os i cant toggle oem unlock..... this has been so frustrating. I believe i need to blank flash the device but cant get to edl.... can somebody tell my noob @$$ how to fix this thing? its my friends device i think he issued an erase all command. ive tried oem config fsg-id tmo and oem config carrier tmo both say ok but nothing fixes it.....please sos. Thanks in advance.
EDIT* Got it to boot to stock recovery after all thanks

You can't reboot to EDL from recovery using the phones interface nor ADB if in sideload mode etc. This just isn't possible.
There are a lot of custom made ADB versions out there other than the stock platform tools. These other ones contain special commands for various brands that support them. I do know these will work but unfortunately only testpoints, bricking, or like smoeone said possibly changing configuration of boot are the only ways to get into EDL I can think of.
I never could get motorolas into EDL switching between slots and such with TWRP.

Seriously? That's odd. What build? I could never achieve this (didn't try intentionaly either) . Every time I would do as you explain for testing purposes my phone would simply reboot to TWRP or back to slot a. This is with majority of motorolas i have with slots and with no configuration changed by me.
fastboot oem blankflash
