Sprint Note 4 weird when I put in a AT&T SIM Card. Help! - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, so this weekend I decided to try my AT&T SIM Card with my Note 4 from Sprint. I thought it would ask me for a SIM unlock code or something but it recognized the card and showed "3G". However, I got the card icon which said "Invalid SIM Card".
Any idea why I did not get the prompt to input unlock code? Thanks!

The sim inside the sprint note 4 is only to access the LTE network. So since you took the sprint sim out, you would be only receiving 3g. That is why you are receiving the invalid sim card error, because its not using it.

So I am getting that error because the SIM card is not using LTE? I don't get it. If the phone is unlocked, shouldn't it ask for an unlock code?

There's been plenty of discussion in this forum about bringing SM-N910P to other networks. I'm no expert, haven't done it myself but what I read repeatedly posted is that radios in this version did not allow LTE on domestic carriers when unlocked. Seems a common issue with phones made for CDMA carriers; taking them to another carrier may not meet your expectations. If the limitations are acceptable, maybe you consider going ahead and weigh your options.
Again, there's plenty of threads in this forum discussing this but here's one that I found that may help. To me, it's been rare for @idone to post these days but he posted here.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I am aware that the Sprint Note 4 would give me 3G or H+ but not LTE which is fine by me. I was wondering why the phone did not ask me for the Unlock code to begin with when I threw a GSM card in there.

Did you find your answer? Or still asking?
It's likely Sprint will give you a MSL number but not unlock the phone to use on domestic carriers. I think you still need to unlock it for that purpose. But the developer I referred you to can do this with or without the MSL. His tools are capable; his service is a full unlock for domestic. I don't think you need the unlock for carriers outside the U.S. the way the phone is currently. Sprint may clear a phone for domestic carrier use but not unlock it or help you activate it. You'll likely find no carrier to help you unlock it either.
I'm sure there are ways to do it yourself but it's gotten more complex with Lollipop and Marshmallow. I'm just not sure how it's done because I haven't fully done it. Only walked through it partially back in KitKat but kept Sprint SIM and service. Didn't try another SIM card.

No I'm still looking for an answer. I have messaged idone on their website and sent a PM. I need this unlocked and take it to H2O. Sprint gave me the MSL code to be given to a GSM carrier but I call BS on that. Strange thing is the damn phone recognizes the AT&T SIM card as a 3G card all right but still says "Invalid SIM Card".

No expert here, but dont you need an AT&T SIM card that has your phone unique ID info programmed into it so it registers on AT&Ts network?
I thought the MSL would just unlock an area in the phone where you would change DNS type info to AT&T's towers/network.

How many times can you put in wrong unlock code?

Hi Guys,
So I've searched and can't find anything on this. I am going overseas and T-Mobile has given me an unlock code. But every time I put it in I would get "unlock request unsuccessful." I've called them four times and they don't seem to know what they are doing and just tells me they will escalate the ticket. I have tried the code two or three times. I was just wondering how many times can I try it? I've heard that it can permanently lock my phone. Thanks in advance.
First of, are u using a different carrier simcard before inputting the code?

At first I tried dialing #7465625*638*# and then putting in the code but that didn't work. I had a SIM from oversea so I tried that and it didn't ask for an unlock code. It just says invalid SIM. My friend has a Verizon S3 which has a SIM so I tried his SIM and it says invalid SIM also. I don't have any other SIM to try and I'm worried that I'll get oversea and it'll do the same thing with another one of their SIM.

Yea, every time I called them I give them my IMEI and they read it back to me correctly. The email they sent me that has the unlock code has my number and my IMEI and it's all correct. I'm not sure what else to try. I thought about just going through cellunlocker.net but what if they give me the same unlock code as T-Mobile? Does the non-carrier SIM card have to be active and in service? I was thinking that the guy at Verizon told my friend that his SIM was only used for 4g data and the foreign SIM I have wouldn't have any service here. Maybe that's why it's not popping up with the unlock code screen?
I forgot to mention that my phone is rooted. Would that have any affect? Would it be a good idea to flash the phone back to stock and try to unlock?

I went to the T-Mobile store and the guy told me he has never done an unlock before and he doesn't know what to do. He told me I should call T-Mobile again. I will be oversea for about two years so I was just hoping to be able to keep this phone since I've only had it for a couple of months. But I guess if it won't unlock then I'll just have to get a new phone. Anyway, thanks for the all the input guys.

Is a direct unlock the same thing as what they are doing with Sprint and Verizon with the nv_data.bin? I was going to do that and then I saw that T-Mobile doesn't have the nv_data file for some reason.

[Q] Unlock the HTC Evo 4G Design

This is a Sprint phone, which I want to unlock and use it in the US on ATT. I got the unlock code. According to most posts I found on the Internet, I should put in the SIM card and power on, and then there should be a prompt asking me for the unlock code. However, I don't see that prompt when I do that. Does anybody knows the answer here? Your help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. This phone has a sim slot. It's a GSM/CDMA hybrid. I've put in ATT sim card and when I power on, nothing shows up asking me for the unlock code. I can't find it in any of the settings menus. Does anyone know how to unlock this phone?

Cdma gsm hybrid phones arent designed to be used on US carriers GSM bands only international bands. The US frequency block is software locked so you would have to hack the radio for it to work
I like to break stuff!
I would like to understand this too. What is the software that I need to change if I want to use a tmobile sim on this phone? Will it be the same process if I port to cricket (CDMA).
There is no HTC design forum or I would post this question there.
Thanks!

Unlock question for my At&T S3?

I've had my S3 about 5 months, I bought it retail from ebay from a seller that didn't unlock it, it is still tied to AT&T. I use Straight Talk as my service as at&t or T-moblie will work with out unlocking them. I want to unlock my phone now and have a question.
Beings that the micro sim in my phone is straight talk and is working, how do I unlock my phone? from what I've read about unlocking, you need to have a NON-WORKING sim to be able to unlock it. Or is there a way to unlock it with out a sim in it?
thanks for your time.
You actually need a Sim that is not att, to unlock. You will need the unlock code from att or you can buy them on the internet. I was able to get my unlock code for my S2 from att. You have to have the phone on their service for at least 6 months, you call them say you are going out of the county for a few weeks, and bam!, they give you the unlock code.
Once you have the code, you need to put in an activated sim from another provider other than att, when you turn the phone on you'll be asked to enter unlock code. Enter the code, hit enter, bam unlocked.
This won't work with a sim that is not active.
So if you have a straight talk sim in, and have for six months, and its working, and its a i747, then I think you have a unlocked phone.

just to clarify, you do NOT have to have AT&T for any given amount of time before you receive an unlock code.
i was an AT&T customer for all of 10 days and got my unlock code for my Galaxy S3. it is VERY dependent on the agent you speak to for asking for an unlock code.
anyways, since you are using Straight Talk, you should have an unlocked phone. best way to test is try to put a different SIM card in it and see what happens.
I was told my device was "ineligible" to be unlocked. AT&T sucks.
If you don't want to waste time talking to a rep that may or may not help you, use this method, it's easy and free: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014982 (it's for the Note II but it works on the AT&T S3). You don't need a non-working sim for this method to work, but you won't know if it worked until you put in a non-working sim.
Also, you'll likely only get Edge network on T-Mobile unless you happen to be one of the lucky few in an areas where you can get 3G or H+.
But as posted in other threads, if you're going to call AT&T, call their International Support line: 1-800-335-4685 (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962453&page=16 )

Thanks for all the great info, I'll give these a try.

can an unlocked phone just swap sims from another carrier?

Actually this is a two part question.
1. I called sprint to see if i can get my phone unlocked so that I could test it on another carrier. At first they refused, then they said ok and gave me the MSL # for the phone. Is that all that is needed if i wanted to go to t-mobile or some other carrier and switch the phone to them? Can I unlock the phone myself if i have the MSL #?
2. if the phone were unlocked, and I had a sim card from another carrier, could i just swap sim cards and use the phone on the other carrier? Or does the phone have to be activated with the carrier first? I've got a friend with a note 4 from t-mobile and i was hoping i could just pop his sim card into my phone to test my phone out on t-mobiles network. I don't really want to sign up for service unless i know for sure the service is better.
Thanks

What i know of the MSL code dosen't unlock phones, sprint lies. It just opens up a hidden menu. There's a forum on here that shows how to domestic unlock the Note 4. To answer your second question, yes if it's unlocked you can just put the sim card in and if you did the unlocking right it should get the signal from T-mobile.

wow so is sprint support completely incompetent or liars? They told me the MSL code was all that was needed to unlock the phone. and that i would NOT be able to just swap out the sim card to test it - i'd have to actually sign up for service with the other carrier and register/activate my phone under that plan

Cricket (GSM) sim card help

I have a cricket sim card (in an adapter - nano >standard) in an Incredible 2.
The phone is unlocked.
When I put the sim card in, in both global and GSM mode, I get an error of an invalid sim and it won't let me edit the GSM settings or apn.
Has anyone done this? I just need a phone for the time being. I'm using the sim card in a different phone to type and post this, so I know the sim card is good and active.
Any ideas help? Phone is stock 2.3.4
Thank you in advance.
How exactly did you get the phone unlocked?
called Verizon, got the code. put it in, phone restarts, then says its unlocked.
Any help with the sim issue?

Alright, sounds like it should be gsm unlocked. Are you sure the cricket sim is GSM? I thought cricket was cdma but I might be wrong. If you can, try a tmo or att sim in the phone and see if you get signal. Also next time can you quote me so I can see your reply? Thanks.

Cricket is owned by ATT, I think they phased out CDMA in 2014 or 2015. They use all ATT towers now.

Just try to RUU to stock and factory reset. Sometimes you need to wipe everything after entering the code so the phone will autodownload the apn settings.
