Is there anything interesting I can do with this watch without a phone? - Sony Smartwatch 3

I've started using microG on my phone recently, and Android Wear doesn't run on it. I'm wondering if there's much else I could do at all with this watch now outside of using some of the default apps (alarm, timer, fit, flashlight, etc)? Currently, my watch serves as something to check the time/date with, and a step counter.
I've tried FitWear, but I had a hard time trying to update it, and trying to connect to WiFi crashes the settings. Outside of that, it didn't really look like a platform I'd be able to use happily.
I've also tried AsteroidOS; really neat, but Bluetooth support would be more ideal. Using it standalone would be fine, but from what I can tell, there's no way to take it out of 24-hour clock mode.

Did you get any where (wear ) with this? I really want to use microG but use my watch for running so need the link to my phone to update steps and runs. Will be ditching my SW3 as soon as I can afford something else.

[Q] Turn-by-turn navigation

Has anyone with the Moto 360 used turn-by-turn navigation? Would you mind answering a few questions?
1, Does it work?
2. Does it killed the battery more rapidly than any other function?
3. Does it require so much from the processor that it freezes up?
4. Is it necessary for navigation to be running on my phone for to work?
5. Will it work in Europe?
I'm considering using the Moto 360 for navigation while touring some European cities, my thought was it would be nice to have this capability without constantly point out my note 3 to check it. Security wise it would be fantastic. I'm still waiting for Motorola and Best Buy to get this in stock so I can buy it and try it. Thanks for taking the time.

1.) Sort of. I drive a truck and with my hand on the steering wheel, it is tough to feel the vibration of the watch on my wrist that signals an upcoming turn. Because of this I find myself continually checking my watch. Safer to just have maps on the phone speak the commands.
2.) Not really. It pops up pretty much just like any other notification.
3.) I don't think it requires any more from the processor than a notification. Your phone is doing all the work. The watch is just sending info back and forth from it.
4.) Yes. But the watch will start it if it is not already running.
5.) I dunno.
For me, it is pretty much pointless for driving. But if you're on a bike or on foot, it will certainly keep you from constantly checking your phone. But note that the vibrations are subtle and short. Any appreciable vibration imparted to your hand or wrist will make it hard to discern. I think Android Wear needs to have a setting for more persistent vibration for other modes than just timers and alarms. Missing your turn is just as inconvenient as being late for something (and in fact may cause you to be late).
Great Info
Thanks so much for taking the time but your information is invaluable! Definitely going to try the Moto 360 out and have high hopes because your help. I'll call Motorola tomorrow asked them about if the technology will work outside of the US. I imagine the new update coming for android there will be a whole bunch of new improvements. I'm a sucker for technology so here I go again. One more question would be after you miss a vibration is it still possible to look at the watch and see if you're on the right path?
I have not missed a turn as all of my testing was done on familiar routes. But to answer your question, if you miss a turn, the phone will just recalculate your route and send new info to the watch.
You can look at your watch at any time to see what the next upcoming turn is.

to the europe question: sure... maps with navigation works too.

Received mine today

The software seems a bit flaky. New SMS does not display message details......still investigating
I eventually managed to download music tracks to the device and they played okay over bluetooth headphones. Not tried the GPS yet
Any questions I will try and answer

Can you run my tracks via the start on the phone (offline mode) that used watch GPS and let me know if the music stutters? It seems to happen when bluetooth and internal GPS are enabled...im on 2nd device and same issue
download my tracks to phone, then go to apps on watch and run that app, then start music via watch memory

Sure...
Download My tracks (google) from play store. Get google music (if not already) and download some songs to your watch...do this by downloading to your phone first (offline) and then selecting in music options to download to android wear. Let a few songs load over.
Go outside. Go to the watch (make sure far from phone and disconnected). Start tracks with the start menu. Then do start on that
Now do play music from the same menu as start.
Go for a jog
OP's can help us all (please; this is a suggestion not a criticism) by listing what they are pairing with :good:

I've had mine since Friday. Have you found any way use the running apps without the phone and use the watch gps? I bought this to replace my motoactiv but stava and runtastic won't allow me to start a run without being connected to the phone.

Download google tracks to your phone.
It will work in offline mode and give you distance and time via the watch GPS. Start it via the start menu and select tracks. The running apps are still through the phone currently.

It didn't work for me yesterday when I tried during my run. Started it from the watch when I was not with my phone and the distance just stayed at 0

Give it a minute and you should see a little location google stake on the top left. It worked for me and i could see my entire mapped run via tracks afterwards. Make you start it, give it a minute and then try. It took mine about .15 of a mile to kick in
You can also go into GPS test under Settings- Developer options - manufacturer - GPS and press start to check time to first fix.

I don't think this is a defect. It is the trade-off for the tft tech making it fully daylight readable. Mine also has this. I'm torn on the trade-off, on the one hand, it is leagues better than even the moto 360 for reading in direct sunlight (it's almost like a mirasol display), but on the other, the 360's screen was very pretty. I'm leaning towards being "ok" with it, since I don't think I'm going to watch any movies on my wrist, but I will probably want to deal with notifications in unideal lighting, but it is definitely an adjustment.
I don't mind the yellow. Its actually not that bad and the screen is definitely visible in the daylight. I am really liking this watch alongside with my Microsoft Band.

How is the health tracking on the band? This watch has some great features, but none of the android wear watches do true health tracking very well yet, and even if it had a heart rate monitor, I've been unimpressed with the ones on the 360 and gear live, so I've been thinking about adding something purely for the health side of things.

The band is great. Its not big and it definitely doe fitness better than the Android Wear. The 24/7 heart rate tracker gives you a better count on how many calories burned, and the only feature that you lose when not using the Windows Phone is Cortana. When I was using it on the 5K run that I had participated with the GPS on, the band was able to tell me where I was running fast and where I had slowed down and so fourth and it was very accurate along side the path that I was running on. The 5K reported that the run was 3.2 miles which was pretty dead on to the 5K. The pedometer is more accurate too compared to the android wear since mine will count steps even if I am pushing a shopping cart so all in all I really like the band for fitness with smartwatch duties as secondary. I can read everything just fine from the notifications when not using the Smartwatch 3, but at least now I can let the band do all my fitness stuff when I go on the run and have the Sony Smartwatch stream my music for me to run with. That way I don't have to carry the phone.
Thanks for confirming this. I guess there is no perfect solution out there for smart watches yet. The screen does bother me some times specially because i had the moto 360 and returned it. but that watch had its own set of problems.
guess i will be keeping this.
From the patent at http://www.google.com/patents/US8208104
It states "a change in chromaticity caused by wavelength dispersion due to the λ/4 plate."

As for on device tracking I hope that Sony and others will include support for just released google fit api on device.
My screen shows whites correctly. I don't see the yellowish problem here.
My screen is unimpressive (pale, low contrast) but OK. A colour tinge is normal for a transflective display, and it depends on the colour of the light you shine on it...the nice thing is that I can read it without the backlight in most situations.
What bothers me is, that some things that work on Google Now on my phone don't work via Wear Voice input. Setting alarms for example. It works fine on my phone, but not on my SW3. Why? On the Watch it always understands, but then just throws up a web search card...
Also, the "wrist flick" to activate the display is a bit weird. It works about 1 time out of ten, but if I just move my arm around randomly, then I often trigger the backlight. That's also a bit weird. I'm trying to get used to it. With my Pebble, I mostly just glanced at the watch without moving it in front of my eyes. That worked fine. I had actually turned off the auto-backlight on Pebble and would probably do the same on the SW3 if I could.
The most annoying thing is the weak vibration of the SW3. With my Pebble, I feel (and hear) the vibrating alert, with the SW3 I miss it frequently even when I'm not moving around. That's unacceptable and might be the main reason for sending it back. I haven't decided yet.
Is there a way to increase the vibration intensity and length? That would be cool.
And one last thing, not directly related to the SW3...On my Pebble I get notifications for every email in my Gmail account, apart from SPAM. With Android Wear, I think not all labels are signalled. How do I change that? I tried to set it up in Gmail, but I think I still don't get all emails announced on the SW...

Wizards, help an old man with Moto notifications...

People Smarter than Me (anyone in this thread),
I'm looking for some help...I have a Moto360 paid with a WORK S5 that is SEVERELY crippled. Can't install anything not on the company white-list (and there ain't much on there). So, out of the gate, no Moto Connect. (BTW, if someone knows a way around THAT, there's $3 in it for you...)
Anyways, I have a GearFit, and I guess because it's Sammy, it's baked in. So, on the Fit, I get ALL notifications (SMS, email, At Bat, KNOX, etc). Even when there is a sent item from, Knox, I get the notification (a buzz on the wrist and an on screen notification). I like that.
Enter the Moto. I get a buzz on calls and SMS, but I get nothing from Knox (which is severely delayed), nothing from At Bat, etc. The cards are there, but nothing to alert me I have new notifications without looking. Most times I keep the phone on vibrate, but some apps vibrate (SMS) some don't (At Bat, Knox). I can't find a setting anywhere to make all notifications alert. I can see where to BLOCK them, but that's it. Am I missing it? The point of me getting a wrist wearable was to not miss stuff on the device, even when I don't have it physically on me. The Fit handles it, but I would like to get the Moto there.
Any ideas??
Do you (can you?) have Android Wear installed?
Sorry, yes. I think "they" (the corporate overlords) cranked down even harder, since at one time you could install some core Google and Samsung apps. For example, I got a Gear 2, and I could install the base program, but during setup, it needed some additional files, and they were blocked. Never got it to pair.
I have AW installed, but that's it. I can't install watch faces, or any additional programs on the phone. I saw a guide to installing apps to the watch from a PC, but haven't explored that yet. The watch is paired and working through AW, or the "base" version of it (it does update itself when there's one).
Thanks

So, it looks like if I set the profile of each application with a sound, THEN set the entire phone's profile to vibrate, I will get a quick burst vibrate. So, there's that. So far, anyway.
Is my best best for installing apps and watchfaces the whole bluetooth tether to a phone connected to a computer with the adb shell?

HRM freezing

I really want to love this watch.. I mean I waited months for it. But, it is making it very difficult. Has anyone else tried working out with the HRM with an application that actually uses the HRM? So far I tried it with RunGPS and AgileFit, and every time the HR has frozen. I don't know whether I have a defective watch or if it just doesn't work well by design. -cjr-
I can check after I get my watch.
I really don't use it but the one time I did it worked fine.
I'll be interested to hear your experience. I did download another application, SGT -- Sports Gear Tracker. I didn't use it during exercise, but just had it running for a few minutes while I was sitting working. It did continue to read my HR without freezing. I'll try this application next time. If it works, then that tells me it is probably a software problem rather than a hardware problem. I realize this is going to be more of a smart watch than a fitness watch, but I don't want to wear both, or switch back and forth. I really only need it to track my exercise, HR, Steps...

Is the GT 2 really this limited, I must be missing something?

Just got myself a GT 2 - love the hardware and just hope I will be able to live with the software. There are a few thing I haven't found, can you please let me know if I'm missing something?
Is there no way to adjust the step goal per day? It is set to 10.000 steps and I want to change it.
Can't I receive notifications while in the workout mode, like a walk och running?
If I get a notification on my phone and delete it from the phone it is still visible on my watch. And if I delete a notification on my watch it is still visible on my phone. This can't be right?
Is there no way to see coming calendar entries?
I got a Gmail but could only see the subject and sender, nothing of the content?
Is it likely that more features will be added, maybe when GT 3 is released?
After an update incomming phone calls do not show up on my watch. And in the list in the Health app I can no longer enable notifications from "Phone". Anyone else with this issue?
Would really appreciate if someone could comment on the above.
Thanks a lot!
You're right, hardware is great, software is limited.
#1, change step goal in Health app on phone (settings, goal).
#2-5, unfortunately correct.
Having said that, I'm wearing this watch since December, day and night, only taking out during shower. I have latest Samsung watches, have few Wear watches, like all of them, but GT2 just looks great and does just enough job (tell time and show notifications). I've loaded multiple custom watches and love it.

Thanks @ddavtian! I have been through every single menu without finding step goal, can you please help me find it? I consider myself as a "power user" so this is really embarrassing
Health app: Me, Settings, Goal
There you can set weight and steps goals
6. I do jot think so.
7. What firmware version are you on? Did incommig call work correctly before update?

Wow, that one wasn't there until I switched to English language on my phone. Now it was there and I could finally change it. What a bug
Regarding incoming call I cannot even find "Phone" under notification settings in the long list of all available apps. It worked just fine when I got the watch a week ago. Do you have "Phone" in the app list in the Health app under "Notifications"?
Firmware: 1.0.6.32
Health app version: 10.0.5.317
No, if you gave Health app permissions, it will do its work, no need for separate settings, just watch needs to be connected to phone via bluetooth.
