[Q] Any downgrade methods for a MM LG G4 H812 - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm betting this has been asked before, probably a no, but just to be sure.
Is there a way to downgrade a MM H812 to Lollipop, or is that not possible yet?
I saw this https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/canadian-guide-complete-source-lg-g4-t3212449, but didn't know if it would work for me or not, I'm not a newbie to this sort of thing (I've tangled with Amazon Fire HDX's, not hte easiest device to unlock), I just don't want to brick my phone for no good reason, thanks for the help.

That is the right link, there is also a watered down version on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/lgg4/comments/3tcrcv/how_i_rooted_my_canadian_lgg4_without_ubuntu/ After downgrading for my H812 my camera wouldn't focus on LP, despite flashing third party camera apps or flashing other H812 KDZ. As such I was force to revert back to MM to have a workable camera, hope that doesn't happen to you as I really miss root. Happy flashing!

Once you downgrade and root, you can get TWRP-ish via FIsH, and get a good ROM, thanks for the help BTW.
EDIT! OK, not true at this point in time, do not try to use TWRP-in-FiSH to install a custom ROM.

TWRP-in-FiSH (https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/development/locked-twrpinfish-locked-g4-devices-t3573048) is an excellent custom recovery by steadfasterX for the LG G4 with locked bootloaders BUT you cannot flash any custom ROM with it, period. Read the TWRP-in-FiSH OP fully before you go off half-cocked and hard brick your phone. Your bootloader will still be locked and that prevents flashing a ROM with it.

I don't think you can even format the whole hard drive and reinstall the operating system using TWRP FISH, because without unlocked bootloader, you cannot touch the root partition.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Forget about custom roms, that is still lightyears away.... you cannot even clean-install the existing rom yet.

Member BAD-ASS , to my knowledge (I provided more information and help to him than anyone on the H812), has never downgraded to stock on the H812 or flashed a pre-rooted image on one (he had the H812 for a very short period of time and had no clue about what he was doing, finding it all too complicated). He has continued to come on as if he has done it all, when in fact he has done very little other than denigrate the phone and trade it off for an H815 by lying to a dealer in Qatar that his H812 was in fact a US model.
He has provided misleading, ill-informed and potentially harmful advice to many junior members on XDA. He has had his threads cleaned more than once by the moderators and had his account disabled twice by moderators.
As with most of his posts, they are off topic and generally a waste of space.
With that said, once again he shows a singular lack of knowledge about TWRP or TWRP-in-FiSH and android internal storage on the LG G4. For those members who actually wish to know more info regarding TWRP, senior member steadfasterX has written the Q&A on the official TWRP site. Please refer to the following links (the second one references internal storage as it is operational in and pertains to the LG G4 setup. Member BAD-ASS has been trying of late to denigrate TWRP (the premier custom recovery and most used one for Android), TWRP-in-FiSH and steadfasterX's work in particular. He himself has not contributed and never will contribute or have as much knowledge as steadfasterX.

If one has a clean system image backup done with TWRP or TWRP-in-FiSH, one always has the ability to restore a clean system image.

steadfasterX has announced today (July 28 '17) that he has successfully flashed a custom rom on two different model LG G4's with locked bootloaders.

Ok, Impressive.
But last time I asked for a status update on EFIDROID, I was told there's no testers, hence there is no progress.
So did he find an alternative to EFIDROID?

Root my LG G4 H81220x
Please correct me if I am wrong (I'm extremely new to rooting) but the only way for me to root my G4 is currently to downgrade my software version first and then follow the step by step guide I saw on another Canadian G4 forum?

That is essentially correct. You must downgrade to 5.1 first. Follow the instructions in: Root ANY LG G4 Variant 100% Success Directives | Root Injection | Less Bricks : https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/lg-g4-100-root-success-directives-root-t3180586 (if you use a pre-rooted system image you can skip down to Step 3).
Use the command for the H812 under the Command to Flash System.img (All Variants): at: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62028523&postcount=2
You can also check out steadasterX's thread [Bootloader UNLOCK][LS991|H81x|VS986|F500] Unofficial unlock -> PoC (**STOPPED**) at: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/...proof-t3648288 and in particular, post # 66 and post # 122.
Read the OP fully and carefully and be aware of the risks and limitations.

So, my phone is working again. I connected it to the LGUP to see if it was recognized. I disconnected and reconnected to be sure as I wasn't familiar with that software. I was then interrupted, and didn't have a chance to do anything else. My phone then started working properly. No more lag on the touchscreen, and the playstore started working again. I really don't know why, but I am grateful. It has been a week now, and I have installed several apps with no issues.
Thanks to all who gave me guidance. It is greatly appreciated.

I'm kinda obsessed using xposed & GravityBox, extremely looking forward to get xposed work on LG G4
If anyone knows the trick, please keep us posted .. and I will .. :good:
From what I recall back when I was running GravityBox on my Nexus devices, it is only supported on Nexus and AOSP-based roms. Pretty sure even if we get Xposed working on the G4, you won't be able to use GravityBox on the stock LG ROM.

Not sure if it would matter as far as this case goes, but I was able to run GravityBox on my Galaxy Note Edge (which was on a modified stock TW rom, so no AOSP-Base), Not sure why it would run on TW and not UX.....but then again, who knows....I guess the whole point is moot if we can not find a way to even get Xposed running in the first place.

As you know, you must unlock your boot loader before you can root your G4. Mine is the international or EU model H815 unlocked and rooted back in May. Take heart. It is easy. Key points are: a visit to the LG support site. Then can make your way to the Developer section and register to receive the bootloader unlock code. LG will try three times to dissuade you but will in the end email you the code. Once done the process is "irreversible" and will always show bootloader ulocked (on the boot screen). LG say they have listened to customers (a dig at Sammy and the i-sheep) and have started to roll out the unlock code globally. Yours may be listed already, if not it soon will be. It's been a month now so register / monitor the site. Once you unlock, you'll find step by step method of rooting your G4 here on xda. I posted one myself but thread was closed as there is one there already. Your next query will probably be a lean deodexed ROM or to install Xposed. Sadly, no news on either of those for the G4. Hopefully a bright spark will crack those soon.

That's not accurate, you don't need to unlock the bootloader to root the device. There is root available for most variants in the dev section and none of them save the 815EU and H811 (TMo) variant have an unlocked bootloader available. The H815 you have to get unlocked via the LG support site as you mentioned and the H811 is unlocked by default from TMo.

On the G3 we had a module called G3 Tweaksbox which did a lot of the same things as GravityBox, and more, specifically designed for the G3. We can hope the same happens with the G4!

Just keep in mind.. rooting this doesn't expose your device to only 1 major vulnerability... but 2, including stagefright. Administrative rights itself will make your device more vulnerable overall... and on top of that, you have the unpatched stagefright vulnerability that resides on the Android 5 LG H812 roms....... So think twice before you do anything.... ESPECIALLY because you cannot reformat the drive and clear any malicious software... God forbid something happens....

Custom ROM for H812?

Looking around the forum and Lineageos' website I see there's no version for the H812 (Canadian version). As per my research I see you can't root it which is fine I don't want it rooted. I just want to install a custom ROM so I can get rid of the bootloop problem.
Can it be done?

The H812 has a locked bootloader and cannot be unlocked officially. This means you cannot install a custom rom in the usual sense. However, steadfasterX has successfully unlocked an H812. Refer to https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/bl-unlock-unlock-bootloader-proof-t3648288and in particular the following post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73702478&postcount=66
Read the OP carefully and be fully aware of the risks and limitations. He can help with the bootloop problem as well.
You can root Lollipop (Android 5.1) but not Marshmallow (6.0) and install Xposed and Twrp-in-FiSH (a custom recovery developed by steadfasterX for LG G4's with locked bootloaders: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/development/locked-twrpinfish-locked-g4-devices-t3573048

I have a non-FiSH TWRP installed. It's steadfasterX's preview. Tried both O and N both work fine. However on mine I got issues with props not getting set properly, so I get junk for ro.build.device instead of h812. So I repackaged his Lineage OS and AOSCP ROMs. Did a nicer job with the LOS one. The other I just hacked out the assert() . The LOS one I put in ui_print() instead. Anyway, long story short I made myself a signed copy of each one (`signapk.jar`, `zipadjust`, and `minsignapk.jar` with that generic cert).
Also searching for H812 custom rom

I'm heavily searching for a way to install a custom rom for my LG G4 H812 phone. I'm very interested in AOSP extended rom.
Since decembre 2017, there is a new law in Canada that give the user the right to unlock the phone at any service carrier. Does this have a link to the "locked bootloader" @sdembiske?

No, the carrier does not promote bootloader unlocking. Some phone manufacturers offer 'official' bootloader unlocking for certain models but the only LG G4 models that can be unlocked this way are the H815 International/European and the H811 U.S models. However, all is not lost with regards to the H812 Canadian model. It can be 'unofficially' bootloader unlocked due to the brilliant and diligent work of @steadfasterX, recognized developer.
Refer to the following link: [UNLOCK][UNOFFICIAL][G4] Unlock **ANY** LG G4 device with UsU
Read everything fully and carefully in the OP (original post, 1st page) and make sure you understand it fully. Links to specific custom roms for the H812 will be found there. Post any questions, problems you run into on that thread.
Make sure you back up your stock Marshmallow rom with SALT, only, before proceeding to unlock your H812.

Yeah, check these forums (fora?); That's where I found all the info. I used SALT where it grabs all the partition data, and just followed the steps.
As for the H812, I ended up with TWRP, and Magisk for root access, and the latest LineageOS at the time. Battery life was a lot better, though the only problem I had was video playing. I couldn't get smooth playback above 720p. It may have improved since.

US Cellular MM root projects?

I realize that the USC version really isn't in anyone's Todo list, but was wondering if anyone has been making any effort to find a workaround for either an unofficial bootloader unlock or prerooted system image that would work in the us991 variant? Best outcome would be an unlock allowing TWRP and custom ROM use, or at least root and Xposed usage on the stock MM. Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I surely hope so..I love my g4. I brought it over to TMO, and have no issues other than having to buy a new battery as original was falling after almost 4 years of service. I've honestly not feeling the need for a new phone, it's fast has decent storage, a gorgeous screen and the design makes it easy to hold even with it's screen size. My only worry is I've been following his posts and they are all focused on the other unlockable versions with nary a mention of my poor us991 lol

Greetings @roberto_1986,
Your choice between A9 and A10 will summarize easily. Do you need one of the new features provided on A10 which was not present on A9 version? If you do not know or if you are not sure, then you dont need A10, stick to A9 for now. Less bugs, better performance and battery life. OS is more mature.
Now regarding rooting, on A9 Rom nothing as easy as pressing the root button under the LR TWRP (1104 version for A9 1210 for A10), then pressing the Closing AVB 2.0 button and you are done. From there you can update to latest stable version within the OS (do not use the beta ones, no point using those and it did not work for me). Works like a charm. I am on MIUI 11.0.2.0 (A9) EEA and never had any kind of issues using this method a few times. I never tried the A10 version of the LR TWRP so I have no idea if they offer the same option for rooting on A10 or not.
You can also unroot from that same LR TWRP in case that would be required at some point.
Hope this helps.

I am unsure if OFFICIAL TWRP 3.4.0 is meant for A10, I suggest you to read their its thread to see if people are using it on A10 or not. Personally I installed it yesterday on A9 and it saved my day restoring a backup made with some other UNOFFICIAL TWRP.
The UNOFFICIAL LR TWRP (chinese/english) which was released last year is the version which includes the rooting ability for A9 (and maybe for A10 too). OFFICIAL TWRP does not have such additional goodies since it is the OFFICIAL branch of TWRP.
You can check this guide using the UNOFFICIAL LR TWRP to root device, ALL steps you need to take to root your device properly are explained here. That's for A9, not A10.
[GUIDE][BEGONIA]Unlock Bootloader, Flash TWRP and Root[PROPER]
Note a quick search within forums would have probably leaded you there, try it next time, that's helpful feature of forums
As for the UNOFFICIAL LR TWRP (by wzsx150) thread for P and Q you can find it there:
[RECOVERY][begonia][UNOFFICIAL by wzsx150][P/Q]TWRP recovery for Redmi Note 8 Pro
Rooting A9 from the LR TWRP 1104 is guaranteed to work. That's what I used myself. As for A10 (Q) I have no idea, check/ask the thread.
Let us know how it turns out and you did to make it work.
Good Luck!

That's very wise not to install stuff you find from internet from unknown sources.
Not sure how you found that website, but I never heard of it or even seen it for the matter. I would not consider it safe myself.
I used to be able to download stuff from MiFirm which *looked* more legit but who knows.
You can find the required files from the xda threads I posted above, it may come from individuals, but I do consider it safer somehow because we have feedback from xda users. Back then when we installed those unofficial version there were not official support of any kind anyway so we kind of had to be 'advanturous'. I dont even remember from where I got mine myself.
Best I can do for you is to provide you with the checksums of the file I did use to root my A9 and reflashed not so long ago.
Code:
$ md5sum recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-1104-REDMI_NOTE8PRO-CN-wzsx150.img
e41bba28984f14ea56da98448cd2c17d *recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-1104-REDMI_NOTE8PRO-CN-wzsx150.img
$ sha256sum recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-1104-REDMI_NOTE8PRO-CN-wzsx150.img
8f203aec69f1ed021badac0f94d1906fcf0530f0e41beddcbc49652705c8731b *recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-1104-REDMI_NOTE8PRO-CN-wzsx150.img
This way whatever source you are getting the file from you'll be able to check it against my sums which will guarantee you got the same version I did use. However I cannot guarantee they are 'legit'.
Before you proceed any further, I want to stress you never told me the flavor of the phone you own. Mine is Global EU phone flavor running an original stock MIUI.11.0.2.0_A9_PGGEUXM. If own a Chinese flavor (ordered on Alibaba, Aliexpress etc etc) you need to be extra cautious for example as they tend to brick more from what I read.
I also remind you need an unlocked bootloader and I strongly recommend you to apply the Anti-Brick solution as described in my previous post. If you restored to stock image using MiFlash or SP Flash Tools it is very likely you need to reapply those even if you did it before. Best to apply them twice than none.
Hope this helps.

The Megathread is pretty much self explanatory for the Anti-Brick method, I cannot explain it any better than how it is explain there. Please refer to the link given in one of my previous posts and just apply the first part with flashing preloader.bin and lk.img as explained.
It will basically provide you with a safety belt in case you do anything wrong with your phone on A9 resulting in bricking the device, bootloop or whatever, so you can Flash stock back on using MiFlash / SP Flash Tool without having to need an authorized account.

This file might not be there, it is a file you have to delete to prevent OS to restore Mi Recovery 3 over your TWRP at reboot (making impossible to have TWRP stick on the phone).
In order to see that file you first need to mount 'system' in the options but as I said it is not always there.

As I said earlier, I have no experience in A10 (Q) problems as I am not willing to jump in there staying on A9 (P).
A10 benefits is not worth the risks to me. The Anti-brick method is well explained in the Megathread I posted the link few posts earlier, however, it's for A9 only not A10.
Looking at the lists of bugs still present on A10, I really see no point running A10 atm. But well anyone does what pleases him/her he he
Good Luck!

It used to pass before, at least it was when I first installed it. Then google made some updates and it is not passing anymore. I am not an expert about that, but I know there are some threads where people are talking about this particular thing.
What is it useful for?

I see.
No actually it was the other way around. When I first rooted in Feb it was passing both tests (green true).
Then one day after google made its changes it stopped working. But I only retro-graming so it is not so important for me.
Have you tried MagiskHide for the games you want to play with?
I cannot really help you with this further because I never tried to fix these myself not really needing to.
Anyway if you search Redmi Note 8 Pro forums you will see some other people are having the issue, at first I thought it was a A10 problem but probably is with the device.
Also you may found help in the telegram group REDMI NOTE 8 PRO OFFICIAL many gamers there I think.
Good luck and please let us know of your findings.
