"Look" of the device (aesthetics) - Moto Z Play Real Life Review

Is the Moto Z Play as good-looking as you are (despite your receding hairline, adult-onset acne, and massive weight gain)? Rate this thread to express whether you think the Moto Z Play is attractive. A higher rating indicates that you would even go as far to say that the Moto Z Play is a beautiful phone.

GREAT LOOK!
Feels very premium!!!

The phone itself is ugly. If you do not put a case on it the Moto Mod pins are visible. A case fixes this but out of the box it looks bad.
The build quality is great.

Tbh, the silver aluminum border & buttons on the black version are a bit unattractive. It could've looked better if they used that space grey kinda metal like on the Z. Other than that, the plastic thingy, for the connector pins, looks ugly. With a style shell on, it looks beautiful but the glass on the back is really appealing as well.

Toughest phone i've ever had.Have dropped it a lot of times.Once even from the bike running 90km/h and it is still fine, just some scratches.Put a dbrand skin on it (i have the wood one) and it will look sweet.

Leather skin from dbrand [backside]

I'm not a case person. I never really liked cases. I do however like the look of leather to some extent, making devices look old-school, like some cameras. I've seen a lot of videos featuring dbrand skins but in my opinion pretty much everyone just seems to overdo the 'skinning'. I'm looking at you people who add skins to the front and sides of a phone with orange, yellow and bright red colours at the same time.
I finally decided to order a leather back from dbrand, shipping all the way to The Netherlands.
Why? Simply because there's no other leather skin for the Xperia Z1. It cost me about €15 after conversion, fees and whatnot.

In my experience, it was tougher to apply than I thought. I'm an accurate person, but I applied a bit of the skin slightly skewed and I feared I ruined the skin when I tried to take it off again. Thankfully that wasn't the case, but holy hell it's sticky. Another thing to note is that, although I didn't expect a leather feel (it really just feels like plastic), I did expect more grip than with a glass back. In the hand, it is actually less grippy with the skin, despite its texture. I do however like that I can just slide my phone across tables now. The glass (protector) on the back scratched easily doing that, but the plastic skin seems to hold up scratches very well.
I can recommend getting some skin for the back of your Xperia Z1, since it made me feel like my phone is as-new again. Also, all scratches on the back are hidden now
Looks nice! Thanks for posting this ! I'm hesitating about like dbrand, slipwrap, skinomi ( I'm planning hahaha but my phone is not alive at the moment so no go for now >__<

It´s a little bit slippery.
To slippery.. Unusable "without a Case/TPU"
Agree. OnePlus 3T/3 is way too slippery to use without a case, especially in situations where you have to use it in one hand. Thankfully there's great cases by OP themselves. I absolutely love the original Karbon Case for OP3T/OP3. It has great grip, looks and it provides "ok" protection for back, camera and even front (it has lips on the corner that allow you to put the phone face down without scratching the screen).
It feels just like a LG G5 with the metallic backing and similar color.
I also bought a TUDIA Slim-Fit HEAVY DUTY ~~ and my gripes with the case is that the backing is rounded hard plastic and it makes the phone slippery as well and is prone to spinning and sliding.

I m using it since 6 months....and it feels too slippery without any cover...but the build quality is better than samsung
This phone is a tad large for my tastes, but i came from an HTC One m7 which in my opinion was the perfect size

Same consideration here, especially when adding a much needed case for protection. I'm coming from an Xperia SP (4.7" screen) which, considering the bezels, is basically like a contemporary 5" device in terms of overall size and I think that's the perfect size that also makes it easy to use the phone with one hand. Maybe 5.2" would still be OK with such thin bezels, but 5.5" is, as I feared, a bit too much and for me it's not really about the width of the device, but more about its height. Anyway I do enjoy the screen size more now that it's easy to increase the screen density with the Nougat update
Slippery but feels great in the hand.
Feels better in the hand then Samsung and most iPhones.
Doesn't feel heavy but feels and looks premium.
Approximately 1/20 of a millimeter thicker than the iPhone 7. Is it better to be thinner, or to feel thinner?
That being said, it feels about a third thinner due to the curved and beveled edges built into it, which the iPhone design team seems to never have thought about. Better grip compared to the iPhone when holding it by the edges, easier to feel the edge and how good of a grip one has.

Funny, I had the m7 before and had the exact same thought. I miss being able to walk down the street and message with one hand comfortably.
It feels awesome and the build quality is just on-spot.
But to me it's a little too large (coming from a hammerhead Nexus 5) which might resolve once I get used to the size.
Reports of it being slippery without a case are definitely true for me as well.
[...]
Yes I do find it slippery as well kinda scary as I would hate to drop it. But with the oneplus sandstone case it's prefect.
Lots of unused space on top and an bottom (but most other devices aren't better).

The weight is ok and 20-30 minutes of browsing is actually manageable. My problem is the aluminum back which is very slippery so I bought a silicone case.
The tablet feels nice in the hand, it does not slip. 8.4 inches has the best size for all my needs: gaming, multimedia, browsing, carrying.
I gave this a rating of 2, since the device really is very slippery and the power button interferes with a solid hold on the tablet. Like a previous poster, I also bought a silicon case for my device and it has made a heap of difference in the comfort of using it for prolonged periods of time. With a silicon case the rating would be a 4.
I always use silicon cases on all my devices, without them its impossible to handle, which is not the devices fault.
It literally is impossible to prop it up without a case as it slides down with any slight motion. I'd say that's very slippery. But the aluminum is sturdy and solid feeling, while still light. It is the best feeling device I've used. Without question.
Nice in-hand feel.
It is not very heavy for it's size (~300g).
I bought a protective case and applied the Huawei screen protector in order to feel more comfortable.
Got a magnetic case, which is great, as turns screen off and on when closing and opening. Still trying to learn the best grip for typing, as sometimes the palm of my hand presses a part of the screen, because of the thin bezel.

this phone is extremely slippery. You will need a case for this phone. Phone is slightly lighter than the oneplus 6t.
Phone is very thin and light, which felt like a shock coming from the 7 Pro. I recommend a case, especially if you don't want to trigger edge touches with big hands.
Coming from a OP6,
It's ok, the flat screen was better. The finger print at the back was nicer, smoother and more accurate. And felt more natural in the hands.
I bought this phone on the day it came out, coming from the OnePlus6 and Essential phone.
Just like earlier posts on here, I thought the OP6 was slippery, but the OP8 is worse.
Front finger print use kind of annoying, the rear one was easier for my finger to access. Now is just pretty much the thumb.
Overall size of phone doesn't make things awkward. I have medium-ish hands so I think it fits in my hand nicely.
Random note; I bought the clear case off OnePlus's website. It's still a little slippery, and not gel. Very tight to get on the phone.

Did yours not come with a case?

It did not. Just a screen protector applied that really easily scratches up.

General I don't care if this phone has a plastic back

People keep talking about how "less premium" the phone is because it has a plastic back.
The previous models didn't seem to use Gorilla Glass for the rear glass as they seemed fragile a lot more than the front glass based on experience. You put a case on them either way, and forget about it.
The more important part is that the frame itself is now aluminum, and the camera module/lenses themselves remain to be covered with glass.
The aluminum frame is more important than a glass back because you don't have to disassemble the phone to replace them, and they can be used to dissipate heat slightly more efficiently.
I wish those "tech" people/tubers understood more about the budget sector and why the word "premium" shouldn't even be mentioned. Yet everyone does. It's absurd.
Edit:
Unsure about aluminum frame, apparently it's polycarbonate but some sources say it's aluminum. Feel free to confirm.
Also nobody ever mentions that the F3 has a really good macro cam, and that neither the F5 nor the F5 Pro brings it back. If they want something valid to complain, here's the first one.
But, I have the Poco f5 and the frame doesn't feel cold to the touch like aluminum feels. I guess, it's just plastic??
This phone is completely plastic, frame and back. Only display and camera covers are glass. I dont care it´s not aluminum, but stop lying.
It's a metal mid frame, metal where it matters. Glass backs are just fragile and just add weight and cost. It'd be nice in a way if the sides were metal too to dissipate heat, but it's an extremely minor thing. It'd be better if they worked to make their software more stable and bug free.

I suppose, articles/some reviews mentioned aluminum but now I've seen more that say it's polycarbonate (especially GSMArena)

Think most/all of them are metal mid frame (likely aluminium as it's cheaper). It would've been a lot cheaper to use aluminium entirely, but polycarbonate is more scratch resistant afaik.
The matte blue version feels really nice in the hand and looks good. I like how lightweight it makes the phone, don't even feel it in my pocket compared to my old phone which had a smaller screen and a glossy glass back.
I'm not a fan of the black or even the white models of the Poco F5 though, I don't like glossy finishes, they look cheap and are fingerprint magnets.

Test pocket mode as an example, it doesn't work. Also I had various apps crash which I haven't had happen on an android phone since 2020 I'd say. Also xiaomi powerkeeper dameon removes apps from memory too often despite locking them etc, but I guess this is going off topic now. I'm using MiUI 14 on another phone currently and it's an absolute nightmare.
