Zuk Z2 Custom ROM for 3D gamers - Lenovo ZUK Z2 (Plus) Questions & Answers

I play 3d games with my z2 (mortal Kombat x and Injustice 2 in particular). I'm not really familiar with kernel tweaking and overclocking and I actually don't want to be.
I'm out on a search for a custom ROM for this device that has the smoothest performance for 3d gaming with the highest battery efficiency. The best ROM in those terms i have tried, was cosmicOS 7.1.1 on which i had 6h SOT with 2h of high smoothness 3d gaming (when it went 7.1.2 those perks were lost though).
I have tried almost every ROM out there and i didn't find something to amaze me (but of course many of them were tried on previous builds and i can't switch ROMs every time one of them gets updated)
I'm currently on ViperOS which satisfied me in terms of customzation and performance but not that much for its battery life and maintenance has also stopped.
So.. any 3d gamers out there have any suggestions?

Update: After flashing AEX 4.4 i can say all my needs are covered. The versions before had a heating issue, some battery drain and some lagging on 3d games. These aren't there any more.
It's now the most satisfying ROM out there and on a high speed race towards perfection since everything else is smooth like butter too.
I got 5h sot with 1:30h of 3d gaming.
If anyone's having the same expectations don't hesitate for a second, go ahead for AEX

Ok thanks

I am on latest ZUI(haven't unlocked yet) and play Marvel future fight a LOT...3-4 hours minimum and have to recharge the phone twice in 24 hours. Performance is so-so, sometimes would lag but rectify itself after game restart. Heats a lot. I tried the overclock feature in ZUI which increases heat beyond comfort but doesn't add anything to performance.

why dont you try to use AKT profiles? You can find a reasonable performance profile when play games, then set it to powersaving when not playing

I'm not really fond of tweaking. I believe they cause higher drain than they should when on performance and higher laggyness than they should when on powersave.
Besides, i don't find it handy to change AKT all the time, i'll most of the time forget about it
Thank you though!

Any update? I finally sold my LG G5 and decided to unlock ZUK 2's bootloader. My requirements are same as OP except I want best of audio quality too. So AEX is the ROM to go for and install ARISE?

AEX 4.5 is dope. There has to be something major for it to lose first place among the others

Ok, i have to update this.
ViperOS 3.0 came out and it's 3d gaming performance is astonishing. Its battery consumption while using is great too. This build doesn't go into deep sleep but, if it's fixed with an update, it will become exactly the ROM for 3d gamers.
AEX EAS unofficial is also Released (which i'm using currently and not changing easily) and it's, for me, perfect. Great battery, amazing smoothness and response, bugless and with much higher performance on 3d gaming than official AEX.
My opinion on 3d gaming is based upon performance on Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2. Injustice 2 is exactly on the verge when I switch ROMs. Some let it run smoothly and some make it cut frames. Those two let the phone run it really smoothly (with ViperOS being just a shred better)

i faced lags in 8 ball pool with viper 3 aex 4.5 and some other roms out there ...atomic os was the best for me in terms of gaming and battery life but didn't have the camera updated so now back to official stock zui.

I installed AEX, it's much smoother than stock but ANTUTU score is lower than stock. Backup is not as good as stock either. Marvel future fight even at lowest settings cut frames.

I installed 3.5 citrus from miju12 and never actually left it. The 3d gaming performance combined with no heat and good battery is incomparable.
I've tried RR, jaguar, aex and pixel experience from oreo but nothing satisfied me.
Can anyone share an Oreo ROM to play some games?

in gaming performance most oreo roms do the job fine

EAS vs AKT

I see these terms a lot when kernels are being discussed to save battery life, can these two be used together? What are the differences? Thanks in advance for any information.

You really can't compare these to but.
AKT basically is changing kernel tunables in such matter that it saves battery or increases peformance depending on which the profile is ment for.. The problem is that everyone has a different usage pattern and everyone's definition of smooth and battery is different... For some Project Zhana can be really efficient and smooth while for me it is efficient/battery friendly but not as smooth.
EAS basically replaces the whole HMP part which almost every device runs now (HMP). EAS is quite new and quite experimental but really stable, you really won't notice it is experimental. EAS is a bit hard to explain for me. But if you are looking for a good user experience and the best battery life with it I would suggest you trying VertexOS.
Now correct me if I'm wrong I'm not a ****ing genius at this!

Awesome! Thank you very much for the info, I understand it much better now
In my experience, I get better battery life a balanced profile on AKT (fusion balanced) on OOS. But performance is amazing on Vertex! And battery life isn't terrible, although not as good as on OOS, and it is still very usable.

Thanks for the insight! I currently have the official Resurrection Remix ROM for my 3T with the latest EX kernel. Battery has been inconsistent for me even with the Wakelocks blocked and a mainly black theme, but I think it has to do with the weaker signal as opposed to OOS. I assume there is a way to apply these AKT profiles in the EX kernel app and have them apply after every reboot? I would prefer to stay with Ressurection over Vertex because it already has almost every feature available, and it would be much more convenient than flashing a different ROM each time for a new feature I wanted lol (since there is no Xposed for nougat)

See the link posted by @juliusedward.
ELI5: Basically, EAS and HMP are way to manage tasks in a multi-core processor. HMP requires a lot a guess work and experience to get it right. EAS is, Well, smart! It gets cpu utilization and load information using WALT/PELT (it's a new topic entirely. Think of them like a function, which they honestly are.) and decides which core is perfectly suited for the current given task and at what frequency. So, it is in it's nature to be more efficient and more battery friendly. Although, through lots of tweaking and optimization in HMP kernels it's not that bad either.
I run VertexOS.
EAS seems offer better battery life, same smoothness, and less warm !

Try Blu spark kernel. It's my favorite kernel in terms of performance and battery life. I can get 6-7hrs screen on time consistently over 24 hours on LTE and wifi. Performance is butter smooth. And when I mean butter smooth, I mean no frame drops, no microstutters, pure 60fps smoothness. Something not a single AKT profile can provide without destroying the battery life so I wouldn't recommend them, and yes I've tried every single profile. FlashKernel is also a really nice kernel but you need to tweak the stock governor settings to get nice performance.
Haven't tried EAS, but supposedly it does its job well, very well so you can also try that out. Try vertex it has been getting high praises.

I think it is safe to presume that it answers your question to a great considerable extent.
Hope it helps.

P.S. AKT profiles cannot be applied on EAS, not yet.

Dont blame the kernel if you have standby drain.
I also use bluspark with freedomos ce and i nearly have zero battery drain over night.
If you have too much standby drain its some third party apps, services or something that keeps your phone awake.

Thats what i was trying to say

Heat

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Lenovo ZUK Z2 (Plus) stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Phone gets HOT when charging and even playing some mid-spec games :/
The heat can be felt outside of the back cover too

For me, AEX 4.5 is the greatest ROM for now on all aspects for the device (Great battery, many customzations, smooth and bugless).
Volte is working on most of the ROMs including AEX (there's no Volte in my country but other people have confirmed it)
(If you really care about security you could try Jaguar [it's targeted to slightly more advanced users] and i THINK most features come with Resurrection Remix)

Of-course this device has heating issue. I can certainly feel it even over the back cover. I am a light/moderate user, never play games. So, I can imagine how hot it will get if engaged in gaming.
Taking no credit from independent developers, but in my opinion the stock ROM is the best. There used to be a time when Android wasn't mature enough and these developers helped bring more options to the plate with custom ROMs. But now, it is not required. I used to be a active rooter/tweaker of devices but I have stopped doing them a year back.
Cool phone, cooler than most phones under load. Especially, cool during calls. A bit heating when using data
Got my heating issue resolved by capping the maximum processor speed at 1920MHZ. On stock room, after running 2 benchmark tests continuously, the temperature on the back was 39.8 degrees. On Aex v4.5, it touched 38 degrees.
I have noticed on my phone with different roms that some utilize or interact better with the baseband than others. On some roms my phone will run on H+ and not change to 4G/LTE. When this happens my phone starts to heat up, and I have to reboot it. After reboot it will connect to 4G. On other roms it will connect to 4G automatically. Just an observation that I have seen over the past couple of months. I am running baseband 9-00026-M8996FAAAANAZM-1.63821.1. Does anyone else have this issue?

Aex 4.5 EAS 2.5.1. Eas 2.2 has slightly more battery life, let's say 15%.
I am planning to buy a used Z2 Plus. I it is only phone with Snapdragon 820 in my budget. Do you think it is a good idea? After all, it has the best hardware considering the price and good ROMs are also available here. What do you think?

Well, first you gotta have a custom kernel which supports cpu overclocking. I've had DarkMoon and Jaguar.... though I prefer DarkMoon.
Then there are two methods to actually underclock the processor:
The first is to use a software to underclock it directly...like set cpu, kernel adiutor, etc. This is a pretty safe process, without the risk of bricking the device.
The second way is by manually setting the clock speed for the "big" cores using something like termux/terminal emulator. This method is what I used for underclocking my device. This is a very direct method, though it has a HIGH RISK of bricking the device.
Before you type just check which cores are big.
In termux shell with root permissions, type:
echo "1920000" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu2/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq
echo "1920000" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq
And reboot!
Don't try 2nd method unless you are ready to risk bricking your phone!
P.S. : You can do the 2nd method using a root browser and a text editor as well. Just go to that path and open the file "cpuinfo_max_freq" and change the value to 1920000.

Remove the back cover, let the heat dissipate. It will cool down on it's own.
My heating issues completely solved on aex5.2 after I installed kernel aduitor and enabled thermal throttling. Performance impact is only a slight bit, 152k antutu 7 vs 172k with it off, but the phone is completely cool to the touch now. It's a Snapdragon 820 thing, and that the heat dissipation mechanism is a little budget oriented in the back. Still a solid device!

Total of 4 hours of screen on time is 4 hours ?
Also check what apps you use mostly which is highest in battery consumption list.
4 hours SOT (screen on time) isn't bad if it's for playing heavy duty gaming like PubG or such. Same setup would offer higher SoT if used others daily used apps like social and videos.

Have you checked in your battery stats as what is eating do much of battery?
That usually points to the culprit.
Otherwise, you can change kernel to a more battery friendly one.
Yes, 90 mins PubG for 100-0% is indeed low, unless your battery has degraded hardwarely

In the ROM section here.
I don't use that ROM so I am unable to comment which kernel would give you best results, it's more like Trial n Error type testing you may have to do.
Allow a kernel to run for couple of days before coming to any conclusions about its true potential.
If nothing helps I guess time to try out a different ROM

Once again tough question since the Custom ROM is meant to satisfy different need of different people. Some wants PubG over anything else. Some wants performance of UI.
More or less all ROMs are good but all have different short comings.
Chose a ROM which is officially supported here and widely used. Unlike your present ROM, which seems to be not supported anymore. This helps to obtain assistance when something isn't in order.
Start with Pixel Experience ROM. Performance, integration, fluid nature of operation is mind blowing. I personally had issue with battery drain when idle (SOT was fine, like 5+ hours with mixed use). AR Beast kernel solve it a bit.
Pixel default with anything mode was drinking 2.5% to 3% battery per hour but after I installed AR Beast, it was down to 1% or even lower per hour when idle like night time.
Some other users have different setup, like @$Ayush$ is running,
PE ROM + AR Beast kernel + Sun Cooling
Then @Rahil4321 is running following setup,
PE + Heliox V2 kernel + Boost v7 + Uber Cooling
Then @sanjay.2704 is running following,
PE with heliox 2 with akt project xana balanced
So if you chose to try it out, check that ROM section and start with the ROM first, after couple of days depending on your need chose a setup by asking there. As those individuals can comment about their setup, how or why.
I am presently running AiCP 13.1 may 4th build (latest one). No extra modification or kernel or any such. Performance is some what satisfactory, things are working fine. By things, I mean most of the stuff I use in daily life.
But pixel was by the smoothest ROM I have used. So start there. Couple of issues that I faced with it was as wrote above, battery drainage in idle (others have solved it with different setup), then WiFi link limited to 72 Mbps (AEX/AiCP/ZUI i see connecting at 150 Mbps) last of all the Jio reception (but all custom ROM I have used have this network bar fluctuation issue) issue, but never faced call drops.

That was actually helpful. Thank you..
DotOS
I was also previously using CitrusCAF 3.6 as it gave best battery life. But in last month or so, battery drainage became very common. Even on clean installation.
I have currently settled on DotOS Oreo after trying AEX5.5 and RR. AEX gave me 4hr+ SOT. But DotOS gives around 6-7hr+ SOT.
I am a moderate user. No bugs so far and smooth.

I have moved to PE with custom kernel and cooling. The device never felt so much snappier. PE is better than every other rom that i have tried.

Have a try of Jaguar with AKT Profile

Anyone interested in an Over clocked kernel or rom?

I've compiled Resurrection Remix with over clocked CPU (@2.2ghz) and GPU (@800mhz) and it's not that much of an improvement. I'd say PUBG runs little better now and some improvement in benchmarks. Well, I wasn't expecting miracles either but let me know if anyone wants an over clocked ROM or kernel. I am trying to add exfat support (I'd be happy if any devs can help me with that) as many user wants but I'm getting nowhere for now.
I can even take it to next level with CPU @2.4ghz and GPU @850mhz but I think that would be overkill.
I'm interested
How is the battery life?

I think it's little less than the stock ROM but now it depletes faster while gaming (as gaming pushes all cores to max).

Nice. That kernel would be great to VR
Well , good idea is to make only OC kernel and then setup it via kerenel audiutor eg. -- OC @ gpu would be nice because it is weakest part of MZP . I've just made benchmark on stock oreo antutu 7.1.3 = 75716 pts. while on latest Cosmos 3.2 rom result was 81703 pts.
i would be interested in a undervolting one

Yeah, that would be interested. I was playing wirh that, I think it was, Atrix time... Don't expect miracles but could add a bit to battery life. And a bit more in freezing the phone or crashing the apps

Under volting is not a good idea, it creates a lot of issues. To increase battery life use smart pixels, build prop tweaks and also amplify and greenify. However for screen on time, lowering resolution and smart pixels are best options.

Yeah, nice idea
I think stock runs on 8.0 while Cosmos on 8.1 so that might've improved it somewhat,
I wish if there was some tweak to OC GPU of normal ROM.

I think a kernel with overclocking possibilities would be nice. In fact, what I would really love was to see a port of Elemental X or Blu Spark kernels.

Best rom for PUBG

Which rom is best for PUBG or other high end games?
What about 9.0 roms for gaming ?
A ROM wouldn't magically upgrade your hardware. it will stay the same S820/821. PubG is a high-end modern game not particularly optimized for our device and is primarily meant for latest phones. You can make it run lag free using pubg gfx tools and lowering resolution of game to 720p or HD+.
Skydragon ROM or latest 5.0.7 oxygen
msm extended
Oos 4.5.1 yes it's nougat but I clan play on highest possible settings with pubgfx app + I played one game and phone was hot though
I used to have constant overheating and frequent frame drops with the older versions of the game a few months back.
But after the 0.9 update, the game runs quite smooth on the quick performance mode on LOS 15.1 on my OP3
I play on low graphics and high frame rate settings btw.
i am on stock. but i want to know any custom rom is better then stock? in terms of performance and graphics.
Skydragon os... Try it

For me, stock OOS has been most stable and performance friendly for PubG. Also, the device doesn't heat that much as compared to custom Pie roms.
Also, something that many people ignore here are GPU drivers. Pie custom ROMs ship with v330 of adreno drivers whereas OOS ships with V281 i guess, It's much more stable and provides steady fps.
I would suggest to use Gfx Tool from play store, lower resolution to HD, 40fps, shadows on, 2x anti aliasing, colorful, balanced graphics. I can play pubg at 40-45 fps for 1-2 hours even while charging.
You can also use the ' Xbooster *root* ' apk to boost up your phone for a smoother gameplay
You can download it from here?

Use mcd kernel with skydragon pie rom... The gameplay is smooth without any fps drop
And no throttling at all
