[Request] Resolution Switch to 1080 - Honor 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Honor 8 Pro is an incredible device, which ticks all the boxes. But since it has a 2k display and a v8 engine in it, it chunks on the 4k battery pretty quickly.
If there is some way, we could lower the resolution to 1080 similar to that on S8 and S8+, I think the battery life will almost double!
Inputs?!

You can there is option in battery section when needed it automatically lower the resolution !!!

We actually don't know when it gets activated. It would be better if the user is given better control of the resolution! Like to lock the display on 1080 to preserve battery and then to switch the display to 2k while playing HD games or watching VR

Charging time more

like others have mentioned, ideally, we want something we can manually control. like what is found on many other phones with 2K screen... users can manually select between 2k, 1080p and even 720p.
right now, the one under the battery/ power savings... we don't even know when it gets activated... or if it works (coz honestly, i can't tell any diff between 1080p and 2K on such small screen).

Hi,
Although there is a option to lower screen resolution to reduce battery consumption, we don't know when it exactly kicks into play or if it does at all. I suspect it only reduces the strength of the pixels.
We have raised this query in the recent meeting which was held in Chennai. They took it with a nod, not sure if it will be implemented. We did point out as to how S8 and S8+ does it.

You will see when an app which sucks too much battery , during that the pixel will be decreased.

PPSSPP needs this...

Current emui 5.1 low res option are not decrease resolution to 1080p I think. Its just reduce the pixels a bit and automatically activated only on power hungry apps. Logically if change resolution at least your screen will flicker a bit. Dont worry upcoming emui 8 will have option to truly change your resolution either 2k, 1080p and even 720p. I think its coming to our phone in January.

Really? Text looks much better and zooming in on just about anything looks better.
Nothing compares to 4k video either.

QHD does neither heat up the phone or use more battery. This changing the resolution thing is a myth. The screen is a fixed 1440P, that cannot be changed, if you 'force' the phone to render in 1080P all that happens is that the GPU then scales it back up to 1440P anyway in order to fill the screen.
Really getting tired of seeing these kinda posts now...

After the recent update i could say i was able to feel some heat only while playing games or some heavy usage.
I dont see any specific abnormal heating issues.
i'd like to say heating issue is not an issue on this phone. but very sure ppl will jump in and say they have this and it's bad, etc...
for me. i play games like Mobile Legends and Arena of Valor. no issues. no heat.
but i know that some actually complain of some heat after recording 4k video on the phone for a long time.
i've never had to record in 4K. never feel the need to. most devices can't play 4k anyway. my tv is only 1080 and my phone's only 2K (the honor 8 Pro)?!? but ya, ppl who do video editing might do that. then again, if they are into video editing, i doubt they'd be using a smartphone as recording device... so, in real world practical sense... i think it's a good phone. no heat issue.

i'm using the honor 8 Pro and i'd lie if i say there is no heat. there is when i use 4G and play games like MOBA. but usually, it's very, very little and at times it does get more only when the area has got poor reception.
is this phone "warmer" than other phones? no. if anything, i think it stays cooler than some phones I have used, including Samsung Note 2 and Note 7 or even the OnePlus One.
it does not get terribly warm or anything like that. i don't use 4K recording. so, not sure how warm the phone gets.
hope that answers your Q.

It will not heat in regular browsing and gaming.
Extended usage of camera beyond 15 or 20 minutes can make it warm and not heat.
I played real racing 3 for about half an hour and it didn't heat up at all.
The thing is people don't know the difference between heat and warm.
A device will get warm of extended usage and under extensive load. More so, if it's made of metal.

If you have One Plus 3. You SHOULD'NT waste your money on Honor 8 Pro.
Trust me! There is ZERO difference in performance in day to day usage.
may be 10% better in Benchmarks.
Games actually perform better in OPO3 due do having an Adreno gpu and HD resolution.
Camera benefits from having more details due to 16 MP.
Battery full charge in 40 odd minutes compared to 2 hours plus on Honor 8 Pro.
H265 10 BIT HARDWARE DECODING in SD 820 compared to NADA in Kirin 960 (In short, h265 10 bit videos don't play).
So unless you're desperate for a card slot or IR blaster, there's little to NO reason for you to get Honor 8 Pro.

- Kirin 960 performs better than sd820 on op3 and some benchmarks shows it performs about the same as sd835.
- About the gpu yes, adreno a bit better. But dont worry, because later on oreo update u can change res to 1080p or 720p, so gaming performance will improve.
- Nicest design for honor 8 pro.
- Camera a lot better in honor 8 pro, bokeh effects, more details even its just 12mp compare to 16mp op3. Camera on op3 are noisy, check the comparison on website.
- Nice 2k screen on honor 8 pro.
- Battery a lot better than op3.
So apart from sd card slot and ir blaster, theres a lot things better in honor 8 pro.

My young brother owns op3. Honor 8 pro camera wins all the way. The overall quality, dynamic range, contrast, sharpening, white balance, color accurate, low noise picture all wins on honor 8 pro side. Low lights picture also better than op3. Compare it with op3, pixel peeping shows op3 has some grainier and noisy photo, even my brother agrees with it. Oh did u try the wide aperture mode? Results are really nice. About the media format, u can always install mx player from play store. Sure battery charging a bit slow because of the big 4000mah capacity, but I dont mind that as it last longer in moderate usage.
Well everyone has their own opinion anyway, so heres mine. Chill.
As for me, yes, dont buy the honor 8 pro yet because honor v10 is coming out next month. Better wait for it, a lot improvement than honor 8 pro with the same price tag.

I only specifically mentioned about details in pictures due to having more mega pixel. No cure for that.
And I am talking about MX player only. Please try playing H265 10 bit file on it with a Honor 8 Pro.
Then do the same with Oneplus 3. You'll be surprised! One of them WONT play. One of them will play silky smooth.
Also see in settings/decoder which of the formats are hardware accelerated in both.
Kirin 960 might be raw power (Only CPU). But Snapdragon is like super refined and overall well rounded.
Performance wise no real world difference. It would be total waste to upgrade.
I am not giving my opinion but simply stating the facts as I've experienced; to help the OP make wise decision.

the u12 plus does feel a little thick and heavy than many similar size phones. but its not something that will make you uncomfortable. i got to used to it in a day or so. OP6 is definitely lighter.

Is there another phone you could relate the vibration to? How does it feel? Like a buzz or thud?
How has the dynamic range performance been at night? Does it tend to blowout lights if you don't tap to expose? I notice this in the 10 and U11 and I'm wondering if HTC has improved it.
How are the fake buttons in practice? Right now it sounds like it's very unreliable.
How is standby battery life? This also sounds like a major issue.

the vibration is pretty decent i must say. Doesnt rattle like the Razer Phone. But the haptic feedback on edge sense is very good close to Apple's
At night shots, its hit or miss. sometimes it takes stunning photos sometimes it is as average as my OP6. Yes it tends to blowour lights even on day shots sometimes.

Battery life on WiFi is good! If your mostly on WiFi you will get 5-6 Hours SOT over 18 Hours
Standby on LTE for me isnt great. Yesterday i was mostly on LTE and got 4 Hours SOT 16 hours total usage with 5% remaining
Not too shody but i think 3500Mah should do little better
Is it possible to press two of the fake buttons simultaneously? ? Or you have an idea how it OS possible to boot into Bootloader/Download Mode without adb?
Compared to op6 is it as smooth and fast? As I understand from your post above the op6 has a better battery life.
Q on the LED notification --- is it multi-colored (even if we have to use a third party app such as lightflow) or is it only green & orange?

OP6 is smoother more often than not. But day to day usage there is nothing different. Haven't had any hiccups so far. Battery life is about the same as OP6. My OP6 on LTE almost gives me same battery life. On WiFi HTC U12+ gives better SOT than OP6. Will post some stats tomorrow.

Will lowering resolution increase battery life?

The settings allow you to lower the resolution. I lowered the resolution to 2340 x 1080 and I don't really notice anything different.... Would this increase battery life? If so, how much?
It will definitely increase battery life.
How much will it increase depends on your usage and your apps installed. It should at max give you 10% increase.

Ah thanks. I come from an xperia z3 so been using FHD screens only. I was interested in the XZ1 compact back then and one of the key points from reviewers is that the lower screen resolution(720p) saved a lot more battery vs the XZ1 at 1080p.

I think the misconception is lowering the screen resolution vs a device that maxes out at a lower resolution. Maybe it makes a difference for OLEDs...but for LCD screens, all if the pixels are still illuminated, so there's not much difference there.

Using lower resolutions use less power bc they use less gpu computational power. Youre not saving anything really from the screen itself. Think of it this way does your computer/laptop use more power running resource intensive applications or running idle?

Not that the resolution that saved power. If Sony could put their 3840x2160 resolution display into 4.3" size of XZ1 compact it still would run longer on battery than any 6.5" sized phone from similar battery even with 720p display. Because it's sheer size of screen that saves battery, not the resolution. 4.3" vs 6.5" is hefty difference. One needs more light to make 6.5" display emit light than to make 4.3" one hence one need more power.
Think about it this way, if resolution would matter then XZ Premium and XZ2 Premium would drain their batteries in a matter of minutes with 3840x2160 res displays. Right? But they work almost as long as say Galaxy S9 Plus or Note 8.

It not works like that. When your phone renders picture in 720p or 1080p it doesn't do it sitting idle. It still consumes power when rendering picture 60 times a sec. And its GPU still runs at 200MHz, maybe it needs like 230 or 250MHz for rendering picture in 1440p but is 250MHz vs 200 MHz a huge difference? I doubt it
It's not like 1440 picture rendering needs full GPU power but 720p or 1080p can be powered by idle GPU. Never was, never will. Ask devs in http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking if in doubt
In reality ability to pick your resolution for battery life is a gimmick and doesn't really do anything.
There were no proofs that phones live longer from same charge when it's resolution lowered. Maybe it works for constant gaming, like playing games in 720p on a 1440p screen will bump battery life. But in other cases no
Taking only power consumption from the display alone, there is no different between HD, FHQ, QHD. The different is that if a game or any apps(or even system app itselfs) runs at HD, it will need less graphic computational power than running at QHD (once again, its not about the drainage from the display, its from GPU).

in reality, it's bull****. learn how GPU works. Try to ask Google devs if you don't know. They do habitate here, at XDA
It's not like it renders something and then goes to sleep turning cores off as CPU does. Instead GPU renders frame 60 times a sec and uses 203MHz either your resolution is 720p or 1080p. It can't lower frequency to 100MHz magically because it's not designed that way. So it consumes as much power working at 203MHz either rendering 720p frames or rendering 1080p frames.
Hence no battery economy achieved

Also if it's not, show me a video that shows a significant difference between the two because it's not the only video I've seen that shows barely a difference. Charging 15-30 minutes earlier isn't much. 1-2+ hours, now you're talking.

@Prattham: Regardless of whether the screen is set to 1440p or 1080p you're still driving the same number of physical pixels on the device. Any power savings you get is not because of the screen but because of a reduction of the GPU's load. While the test may not meet scientific standards it does meet real world standards, which is more important. A savings of 2 to 3% as shown in the video easily fits within the margin of error for such a test, and thus there is no benefit to switching to 1080p.
GSMarena did their test with a S7 and found zero difference in battery life. The myth is dead. The only benefit is better graphics performance. Samsung didn't do it for battery, they did it for UI smoothness.
