How do I Retrieve Data from a OnePlus 3 with a completely destroyed screen? - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

I dropped my OnePlus 3 on the road the other day, which would've been fine, except someone drove their car over it immediately after. The display is completely gone, and the rear cover won't fit, but surprisingly the internals are okay, because the notification light is blinking green to notify me of emails. I have TWRP installed, but I can't boot into it because there is no feedback at all from the phone, no vibration, no display. Is there a way that I can somehow mirror the screen over USB? That seems to be the only way to get my files off. If anyone can suggest anything, including hacks, then I would be grateful. Anything to get my data back, because I'm not sure Customer Service will allow me to backup data (They haven't responded yet, but I'll give them time).

You could try: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/mirror-android-screen-pc-mac-without-root/
But it won't work when you Turnoff the screen. There are a lot of articles about this problem, a bit research and you should be able to come a bit further!

Vysor needs PTP, and I can't unlock the phone at all to change the USB mode. Thanks for the help though!

a dead lcd+touchscreen ,right?
well then, some idea might you need a monitor with a touchscreen capable, connect it via usb to hdmi adapter
or
if you don't have a monitor with touchscreen,
get usb-c hub to min. 2 port usb3, usb3 to hdmi, and a basic computer mouse.
you'll get the idea, the mouse will act as a touch
it might not work though.. haven't tried it

1.You can go to a phone service in youre city. Ask them to connect (not change) a display (if they have one) just to copy youre data.
2.If the phone it's ok and you like it change the display. But it's expensive. In my country it's about 130-140 euro.

OnePlus 3 does not have the hardware for HDMI out. Only WifiDisplay. So that won't work :crying:. Thanks for help though.

I have emailed them, but so far no reply. The service centre is in another city so I need to know before I make a (very expensive for me) trip.

Mate, i'm talking about any GSM service, not OnePlus service.

If the device boots and you can connect to a computer over ADB, then you could:
* push an open recovery script to your internal SD card ...the script should have instructions to do a data backup
* reboot to recovery, which will then do the data backup
* device will show as media device, which let's you copy the backup to your computer

You have custom recovery? if you do, pc should see youre phone storage.

do you have a custom recovery installed on your phone?
if yes, then you boot to recovery using the adb command or using the hardware button. when the phone boots into recovery, you will be able to see your phone in my computer from where you can access all your data.

Phone does not recognize it is connected to computer through USB

Good day fine sirs and ma'ams.
I would just like to say I love my Tilt 2, and have had it for a few months now with no real problems and this is about my 4th WM phone.
As of about a month ago, I have been unable to connect or sync the device to my PC.
I have WM Device center 6.1 (the latest from the website)
I am running windows 7
I had been able to sync the phone until about a month ago.
I have unchecked the box in the USB to PC for faster data synchronization.
Essentially, when I plug the phone into the computer, it just acts as if it is connected to a charger. Nothing comes up on the phone and nothing comes up on the computer. It just charges. I have even installed and uninstalled WMDC a couple of times.
I really am at my wits end here.
My question is, is there a fix for this apart from sending the phone in? I am able to flash the phone via the microsd card, and even tried going back to the e2 rom that is as close to the ATT rom as I could find.
I did find the stock rom, but it does not come with the image file, just the ruu.exe I believe. I cannot flash roms via the USB cable either, so I am only able to change things like I said, via the microsd card.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
And yes, I have searched, and have found many other people posting in other threads saying they have the same problem, and everyone just says to uncheck that one box, which I have done, so that is NOT the problem.
Also, I would just like to add that when I go into the windows directory and attempt to run activesync (repllog.exe) I get the following message.
(cannot communicate with the pc because of the fllowing remote networking error (Error 608)
I have seen others ask help for this question without an answer on xda-dev also.
Thanks again! If anyone has the solution here I think a lot of people will be very happy!
:-(
turn off your firewall then pug ur device in and see if that works... works for me... perhaps your firewall started blocking it for some reason... other than that good luck
I had similar things happen to me in the past. While the phone is connected, check Windows Update whether there is a new version of Sync Center. This has fixed the problem for me.
i appreciate the suggestions.
However,
I have the firewall disabled and it still does not connect.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the WMDC using the latest software directly from the website. There appears to be no updates for the program once it is installed.
Any other suggestions?
Have you tried multiple USB cables, multiple USB ports, or even multiple computers? I've had USB cables which aren't capable of data transfer, as well as USB ports on the computer go bad. You might also considering a hard reset, to ensure no software on the phone could be causing the problem. If it's truly the USB port on the device that's broken, then you're in bad shape if you want to return it to AT&T for repair. You may be able to flash the AT&T stock ROM, but you won't be able to restore the AT&T stock SPL, which they check when fixing the device, so you may very well have to fork over some money to get it fixed. Best of luck
My phone is doing this also.
Multiple PC's, multiple USB ports, multiple cables. All of which worked perfectly beforehand...
The other thing to try is Internet Sharing - when I go in there and press 'connect', then it says Check USB cable connection, connect USB to any of my PC's/laptops and it doesn't register on the phone.
This phone is really a piece of ****. I could rant on for hours about the stupid problems there are with this handset, I'm sure I'm not alone. Perhaps I expected too much.
Anyway, if anyone has any info on how to make my USB connection work I'd love them forever...!

Could be a faulty device...my phone connects to every computer, every time. take the phone to your provider and show them whats happening.
Also, i've had issues with the standard mini USB ( http://www.meditronik.com.pl/doc/mini/usb-kabel-mini=foto=canon.jpg ) not properly connecting/loosing connection.
Try a HTC usb it might work better: http://bestcellbuy.com/bargainsea/Pictures/HTC/OEM_Home_Charger_USB_Cable/OEM_HTC_Data_Cable_07.jpg
I've tried the HTC USB lead that shipped with my phone to no avail.
I think the device is faulty (surprise surprise). It charges from USB perfectly fine, every time.
I'll post back once I find out what Telstra say... it's obviously still under warranty but that isn't really the issue - It is just such a major PITA having to switch to a loan phone and deleting confidential business data etc from my phone before sending away for repair etc etc...
Thanks for the help though, it is appreciated.
Well, I've got my USB going again. Not sure exactly what I've done, but basically I pulled the battery out for a few minutes and replaced it, turned on and off the 'high speed' checkbox in USB Connection Settings, and it has come good.
****box phone.
Somehow mine started working again last night too. Same cable, same port and everything.
Really odd, but I'm not complaining at the moment!
It seems this problem is spreading, as i'm being terrorized by this stupid bug... This afternoon I've tried to get internet on my laptop (by connecting my phone to it), but it was just charging my phone, so I thought the cable was broken. Next I tried it at home on my desktop computer, with another cable, and it did the same (several reboots have passed).
I don't know if someone already tried it, but when you enter the bootloader, it says "Serial". Normally when you connect the USB-cable it changes to "USB" (at least with my kaiser, universal and wizard). on my phone it didn't...... can anyone check this for me??
to enter bootloader: hold volume-down-button and pres soft-reset-button.
thanks in advance!

thanks for your help.
I've flashed my device with the newest official from HTC, and it still doesn't connect with the usb-data (i used the "flash-from-SD" -method).
The strange thing was that it happened suddenly... i never use a headset with cable, so its almost impossible the connector is broken. Any ideas people??
btw, the device isn't SPL flashed, so i can't use other roms beside the official roms...
Same thing happened to me. No USB sync, no USB connection at all; it only charges. Thankfully I had a chance to flash to a custom ROM before this happened.
The only way I can sync my data is to use a bluetooth USB in my PC. Works quite well with my contacts, calendar, & email, but I have yet to try to transfer any large files.
The bluetooth USB I went with was ASUS USB-BT21 USB 2.0 Mini Bluetooth Dongle. It is VERY low profile, too, but I would have liked for it to come with an end cap like those USB flash drives, otherwise I have yet to find any complaints about it. The price was great and so much cheaper than spending an additional $70-$100 to get my USB port on my device fixed.
Here's my saga: No Syncing, No USB Connection
Best of luck!
Debbie
this happened to me before...when you connect your devivce to your laptop/comp, are you guys not getting the little pop up that says activesync & disc drive...??? if so jus make sure at least one of those are checked...sometimes both of the circles will be blank, thus the comp will simply charge it...
unplug the device for approx 10 sec then plug it in again, and the box should pop up again...
also...if you are tethered to your comp using the tp2's internet, your comp will not recognize your tp2's storage...

I did not know one could flash to new ROM by use of the SD card?
Mine is de-HSPL, so now I can not select another ROM anymore. (Got the 6.1 default one again)

I've never used the SD-Card method myself, but now will have to due to my USB port no longer working.
I've been syncing by using Bluetooth USB and just tried transferring files via Bluetooth and it worked like a charm! Smaller files were instantaneous and large files took longer (of course), but also worked fine.
I just tried copying over a RHODIMG.nbh file and that bugger worked (188MB)... Excellent!!!
I did buy a USB card reader to transfer files, just to be on the safe side, but I must say that this little Bluetooth USB that I picked up is working awesome.

i exactly have the same problem.I guess i need to send it back

[Q] Can't connect to laptop?

I got DHD 2 days ago, first day everything worked normaly, now I can't connect the phone via USB to laptop. I don't get the dialog asking to charge, use as disk etc. I tried everything, debug mode on/off, restarted, removed SD card and back in again, I used another SD card, reboot my laptop, phone (also with turned off "fast boot"), ... I've had HTC Magic till now, no problem connecting it as disk to my Macbook, same was with this one. I think I might have disconnected the USB too fast, but I'm not sure if it was this phone or the old HTC Magic. Interesting thing is, this topped working Thursday night, but on Friday I could connect it to the same laptop using Nokia's micro-USB cable, it worked, but no way to getting it to work with supplied HTC USB cable I could use Nokia's cable, but it's in the office and HTC's cable should work, shouldn't it?
Does anyone have an idea what to do? Phone does not even set the card so laptop can recognise it as USB disk (even if I use Windows VM, phone is not detected, i I plug in Magic, it works on Mac and Windows. Would a factory reset help (how do I backup data on unrooted phone)?
And yes, I've searched this forum and tons of other things online, nothing seems to work Some say this cable is for charge only, but a) how come it worked when I first got the phone? b) USB cable is a USB cable
Don't you have to pull down the notifications bar, tap USB connected and then choose the connection type you want each time. I don't have sense ROM anymore but I'm pretty sure that is what I had to do every time I connected the phone, I don't remember the phone prompting me.

Have you removed any apps with Titanium Backup? Rooted your DHD? Flashed any custom ROMs/Radio's/Recoveries?
The ability to connect your SD card via USB to your computer is a core function included within Android. It would not suddenly stop unless you did something.
I'm also pretty sure the check box is for it to not ask you again. Have you looked at the USB settings to clear the default you have set?

No, my phone is not rooted (yet), it has stock rom and everything. And I've never set to "never ask me again". Weird thing is that it worked for first few hours.
Now, the WEIRDEST thing is that I just got to the office and connected the phone to my (same) laptop with Nokia cable. It works like it should, to every USB port I connect it to. So my official HTC USB cable, that came with the phone does not work, charges only while Nokia's USB cable (form my old E66) works perfectly. I can use this cable, though I'm ultra curious why a HTC cable wouldn't work?!
Faulty cable or a bent pin or something. Happens from time to time. Micro usb leads are dirt cheap and readily available now anyway so no loss apart from a little tone to replace it.

Yeah. I'll test coworker's HTC USB cable tomorrow and try his Desire phone with my laptop so if my cable is faulty, I'll go to service and ask for a replacement, a cable that comes with the phone should be under warranty, right? I will post the outcome here.
Not to forget, a huge THANY YOU to all of you who tried helping me
Yep, it was faulty cable. It took them 2 WEEKS go give me a new one, but at least it works (for) now.

[Q] How do I back up contacts WITHOUT use of phone screen?

Hi All,
I've had a good look through the "contacts" issues and can't see a relevant thread that helps with a 2 point problem so here goes:
I have an Xperia Arc LT15i
It has suffered some water damage, though the indicator is still white.
The screen is completely dead / black rendering the phone unusable.
Connecting the phone to pc with USB lead allows me to access the SD card through PC Companion - this is the good news.
The bad news is I have no way of backing up my contacts to the PC as I assume they are stored on the phone memory and there is no way as far as I can tell to see a contacts folder.
The Contact Back Up feature on PC companion and everything else I've read requires that I access the phone directly, which I can't do.
Does anyone know how I can access my contacts to back them up using a USB connection and not needing to directly interact with the phone?
Also, is there any chance that this fault will repair itself and the phone come back to life or do I save whatever files I can and then write it off?
Thanks a lot.

Thanks, but I'd tried that and regrettably the contacts are not there so I can't have synched them.
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-rescue-squad/30987-acquire-contacts-via-adb.html
Of course that would require USB debugging to be enabled.
If it's not, you can use the keyboard and usb-otg adapter to enable it like this guy did:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...een-need-keyboard-sequence-usb-debugging.html
Of course his phone is different, so hopefully you're using stock gingerbread? or ICS?
play around.
Basically, for any other tool you would need ADB, so try to get that enabled.
Are you rooted?

I'm new to all this, but as far as I can tell, the other guy is referring to a separate keyboard on his particular phone. The Arc doesn't have a keyboard - only on screen.

Wait, don't you have HDMI out? If you don't have HDMI cable, look on ebay for that too, I'm sure you can get one for cheap, you just might have to wait a little to arrive from hong kong or china
Plug in a screen.
That guy is reffering to 'otg' keyboard:
https://www.google.com/search?gfns=...w&biw=1920&bih=986&sei=7skyUry5D4iMtAbr04HoCA
Arc s does support it, I tried. No root needed. And since Arc is pretty much exact same thing, it shouldn't cause any issues either.
Actually if you get the picture on the screen via HDMI, you're better off using a mouse. You will need the 'usb otg' connector (search ebay, they are really cheap) and USB mouse. Any should work, even wireless with dongles (logitech nano any unifying reciever both work)

Hi, thanks for the advice. If I was in the UK, it would be much easier to get hold of these things, but I'm in Brazil travelling and (whilst not complaining), it's going to be tough to get things set up as you suggest. I still have the USB OTG that came with the phone but keyboard and particularly HDMI connection will be a problem.
But it would be definitely worth a try if I can arrange things at some point. Thanks,

[Help] Backup ZE551ML Touch screen broken, no adb without unlocking, OTG not working

Dear all,
I have a Zenfone 2 model ZE551ML, the screen got broken, then the repair shop managed to break the touch connector while changing the screen.. Yes, it s*cks.
I would like to access my pictures and applications data which stayed on the RAM. I did not enable the backup on google servers.
I plugged my OTG cable, but I do not get any cursor, the ADB debug is enabled but I need to unlock the screen to be able to access the device using the adb command.
The device is not rooted, updated to the stock Version WW-4.21.40.184 (andriod M), the wifi is enabled and the device connects to internet meaning that I could install apps from the web interface of the play store.
In the end, I have a new screen but I can not interact using the touch functionality.
Do you have suggestions to give me to access my device ?
It can be an application, a recovery method, .. as long as I don't need to interact with the screen.
Any help would be highly appreciated,
Thank you
Laurent.

It would be too easy The broken connector is on the CPU card.. I guess it is too expensive... I complained but what can I do ..?
Now I just want to get my data
Is there a recovery method which gives access to adb commands ?
You can try using an usb otg cable and connect a mouse.
Guess I'm too late.
Thanks Marteicos for your reply, it is not too late, I am still looking for a way to access the storage of my ZE551ML.
I already tried with the OTG cable and a mouse, I don't get the cursor on the screen, I tested the technique on my new phone and it works, meaning that the cable is working.
I am still quite annoyed with that.
I can download apps (vnc like) from the web playstore but I would need that the app runs immediately after installing and without configuring it .. :/
I have the same problem that I need to recover from a broken screen and do some backups.
Background: I don't have USB debug enabled, so I cannot even get into the phone with adb. I cannot even get into recovery mode, it seems. Hard to say what the phone is doing because I can't view the screen.
Buying an OTG cable/dongle with HDMI output and mouse/keyboard input seems like a good idea, but I saw in a youtube video that one has to operate a popup menu on the screen too enable OTG? (Which I would not be able to do.) Can anyone please check for me whether operating a popup menu is required to get OTG to work? Or is there a workaround that does not depend on having a working screen?
(I do not have an OTG cable/HDMI converter to test with at the moment, would have to buy one speculatively to test.)

I have the same problem. I managed to break that connector when trying to replace the screen with a new one. So now my phone can't be used and can't be fixed apparently, which means it'll probably go to the trash bin.
I am writing here because i would like to know if there is any way of retrieving the installed applications data.
I can connect the phone via usb to the computer, but i can only see the pictures, nothing else.
Can i get access to my contacts, my messages and other data besides pictures? Better yet, is there any way of cloning everything on the device and transfer it to another?
Unfortunately i wasn't wise enough to backup my apps through google services
Any help is appreciated. Thanks
If u can't touch the screen at all, there's nothing much we can do.
If you still can manage to install any app, try installing AirDroid and download all your files to your computer to backup. But be prepared, transferring files through WiFi can be slow.
$46 for full screen and frame replacement and comes with new touch screen connector
Buy it, install and then its fixed.

Hardware Problem - Software - data Recovery from broken display

Hi everyone,
I know this forum is more about software and the functioning of custom roms. But maybe someone has experiences with data recovery from a SM-A320FL, stockRom, with a broken display.
The mobile of my son has a broken display. The mobile still works, I can plug it in to a computer and it is still recognized as normal. I can not get access to the data via the laptop because I have to unlock via the phone. I know I could just get out the external sd and save the data, but my son would like to save his data from the phone as well.
The display is completely black and broken. We can not access the phone. Touch does not work.
My idea was to access the phone via an USB-C hub and plug the phone to an external monitor with a mouse and keyboard. So far it has not worked. Has anyone tried this solution and could tell me his /her experiences?
Has anyone experiences with such or a similar problem? Are there any other solutions to the problem, e.g. break up the phone and connect a new display to the phone,?
Many thanks for your help and any suggestions

As far as I know, the phone is not capable of displaying its screen over the USB-C and never has been:

Your only chance would be to use adb or Microsoft's Your Phone. But for the latter, you need to install and set up the app, which would be impossible with a broken screen.

As a matter of fact, you could still root your phone and make a backup using the buttons on the side of the phone, however, you could only do that with a blindfold on as you have no screen. (However, there are many screenshots and videos available to see what theoptions are.)
Of course, if you bring your device to a repair shop, they can attach a touchscreen and perform the backup for you.
