Android O based Custom ROM coming soon! - Moto G5 Plus Guides, News, & Discussion

Android O has already booted on g5 plus somewhere!
(Looks like vache is working on a Android O based custom ROM.)
Exciting!

Maybe its just me, but Oreo seems to be progressing a lot faster for non nexus devices than previous android versions. Can't wait.

Yup one of the feature is easy migration and seems like not lot of changes too.

This is just a start, a good one. Apparently, there are many bugs to be fixed. Also, I wonder whether Treble will be integrated (or we have wait till Motorola's official release)

This looks promising. Thanks for sharing

Moto G5S plus is running android 7.1.1 (INDIA) out-of-the-box and here we are still running 7.0
why this partiality? or lack of team?
we are thinking of Android O huuh!

Moto G5 Plus and Moto G5S Plus have the same firmware. The difference lies in screen size and camera.
So it will not be difficult for Lenovo to update Moto G5 Plus. But I don't think Lenovo will update Moto G5 Plus with even security patches, Android version upgrade seems impossible.

for those who canr wait to check.

Moto Z Play should easily get Android O too

I am shocked too see people spreading the news that moto z play will get Android 7.1.1 or 7.1.2 like its so fortunate for moto z play. I mean c'mon doesn't Google has an 18 months software update policy? This phone was just released in September 2016. So I believe our moto z play should go atleast till Anroid O yeah?!

Yes you are right!
With Android O Google makes it easier for manufacturers to develop upgrades so who knows, maybe we get even later versions of Android on our Play.

I believe that is the exact reason it will be sent to an early grave
Qualcomm will be like: nah we ain't working on that new vendor interface for our old SOC, why should we
And if not them Motorola will be like: Nah we ain't working on including that new major change Qualcomm made, too much effort for our midrange device
Nobody knows, except moto

[OFFICIAL] Android O upgrade confirmed for Moto G5 Plus

Motorola has just confirmed that Moto G5 Plus will be updated to Android 8.0 (Oreo).
So, just relax. And wait. Good things come to those who wait

Might as well just link the official source... https://blog.motorola.com/2017/09/14/say-hello-android-oreo/
So does this mean moto will release the sources for 8.0 maybe? Not sure of their track record

Yes, they are required to release the kernel source (only) per license for using the Linux kernel. Moto has a really good history of releasing the relatively quickly after an update.
Now this is awesome news

What's next? SP or Oreo?

Are there any release notes for may security patch?
I hope we will receive oreo next..
Personally I think Oreo will come perhaps 1-2 months after the G6 launch.
I still see Motorola using the Android 7 v 8 comparison between the phones as a marketing ploy.

they have sent emails comparing the G5S having 7.1 vs the new G6 with android 8.0.. and then there are the fanboys of motorola saying it was never delayed..
Motorola could step up and give us the android P beta, then release the official in august-september, it counts as only one update just dreaming

The Galaxy Nexus got an 8.1 port so I doubt they would give up on the g5 phones
Consider this:
On how Oreo 8 works vs current 7 so it's a biggie https://www.androidpolice.com/2017/...-will-modularize-android-make-updates-faster/.
Moto G5 Plus will not support project treble

Oreo != Treble. We won't get treble.
Lenovo screwed us over, stock-ish Android but no major updates or improvements other than security patches. I will never buy another one of their phones again that's for sure. Next device will probably be a Android One device like the Nokia 7 Plus.

Oreo will be coming around june.. on the g5+

This is for g5s+ but the g5+ shouldn't be left far behind
Interested in knowing if the kernel is updated to 64 bit or else this update would be utterly useless to developer community apart from camera blobs.

It will still be 32 bit. But we need those blobs yes.
Hmm, having seen no soak tests from either the G5S Plus or the G5 Plus, June may seem a little optimistic. When Motorola was testing the Oreo soak test for the Z Play, they also released the update notes for the Oreo update: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75464851&postcount=181 However, it still was 1-2 months before official OTA deployment.
Whilst it's good to get excited about major updates, I'd still temper expectations until the OTA actually comes out.

So long as you're prepared for the possibility of major, possibly device breaking bugs and having to be very careful if you wanted to downgrade back to Nougat (we've got enough bricked devices as it is)... It should be fun, just be careful
A jump is nice. Directly to 8.1 Let's see how much time it would take
I disagree that we will see an upgrade in June... Let's break it down a bit as to why:
Honestly, look at the history of the Oreo upgrade for the G5S+, it has been in beta/soak for almost 5 months. It started in late January, I can provide references but Google will work easily enough here if you don't believe me, and there are verified users getting the initial beta in early February. Although I haven't seen a screenshot of the released version, I am told it has the May security update, meaning the final build was likely early to mid-May... So conservatively that process took 4 months from initial beta test to release.
OK, so a tad longer than most Moto upgrades, but not uncommon as anywhere from 30 to 100 days from initial beta/soak to release is normal. We have seen this process be no shorter than 30 days, although 60 would be "typical", but we have seen it take in excess of 8 months (in the case of Nougat for the Moto X Style/Pure before full release, for example).
Now jump to our device, the G5+... there is no confirmed users with a beta or soak yet, not even semi-substantiated or reputable rumors of it occurring yet in ANY market. Not even confirmation of MFN users getting emails to sign up for the beta test. Plug in the previous numbers and we are looking at a release no earlier than late July, but most likely in September and possibly even later.
Again, this is all guess work and looking at history and my personal knowledge through having Moto devices for a very long time, so I could be wrong... in fact, I hope I am wrong.
Plus, let's not forget this device is already 15 months old (released March 2017), and this puts Oreo release at an age of 18+ months, something Lenovo's Moto has done before for devices this age, but also at an age they have cancelled upgrades (not updates) on other devices at this age as well. Although I don't think they will cancel it, it is a remote possibility to keep in mind.
Just my 2 cents worth... take it as you wish.
Oreo 8.1 now rolling out for the G5S Plus.
We can't be too far behind.

Just curious, what have you seen to show the rollout is happening? I've not seen any OTA reports and the update page for the 8.1 Oreo was taken down (or I can't access it at any rate).
Just Google it (moto g5s plus oreo) and see all the reports from the last 12 hours. Eg BGR, Android Police
https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/05/30/android-8-1-oreo-rolling-moto-g5s-plus/
Edit : seems like the articles reference a Motorola update info page that has since been taken down.
Perhaps it went up prematurely?!

well, at least we know that the 8.1 release note was for a soak test.. so oreo is on it's way and as soon as the soal test leaks you all will be able to install it
Now the thing is what is going to happen with the G5 plus non S?

Unfortunately, we have seen these "release notes" posted many times and the associated update never appears on devices.
But since we won't get Oreo for several months, if at all, we will probably see the update.
Oreo will never come to the G5+ due to Oreo being 64bit only (which the G5+ is not), sorry guys...
The G5S+, on the other hand, will have the Oreo update indeed!

I'm confused by this statement about Oreo being only 64 bit - the Moto Z Play (also with the Snapdragon 625) got an update to Oreo (v8.0), which was a 32 bit update... https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/8632026 https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76277398&postcount=28 https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76277699&postcount=29
As I understand it, the G5 Plus, G5S Plus and the Z Play have the same 64 bit capable CPU, just with a 32 bit stock ROM, unless something changed?

Oreo is able to run on 32bit systems, as you quoted, it does on the Z Play. As changing from 32 to 64bit needs a complete wipe no OEM will change that with an OTA update. Motorola knew what devices are running which OS and they wouldn't have announced Oreo for Moto G5 and G5+.
Some people just don't have the correct informations.

Sometimes I wonder that Moto is treating G5 plus differently than G5S plus but both the phones are basically the same (IMO), the only difference being the screen size and the dual camera setup and thus will update G5 plus after updating the special edition G5S plus, if this happens, I'm pretty sure we won't be seeing Oreo till the end of September, maybe November.
This is just an assumption and I'm not saying that it's correct but I just hope it's not and Moto will release a patch note for G5 plus Oreo update soon.

by the month of november all our warranties will be over and custom rom's bugs will probably be all fixed.. also treble is in a good development state, so we would not need support from motorola anymore.. i don't think it's worthed waiting that long..

Is LG Q7 going to get Andoid Pie?

What are LG's plans about upgrading stock ROM?
BTW, do you consider Pie has many advantages over Oreo, in general?

Yes i think it's planned but LG has not released communication about.
The update to Android 9 is accredited by almost all the web titles and logically (with the factory 8.1 version since its launch) should be updated to at least a new one next version.
