Downgrade HTC 10 from android 7 to 6 - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I lost my old HTC 10 due to water damage. It had android 6 on it with the mock location bug. Now I bought a new HTC 10, but it has android 7 on it. I've been searching for the last few days, but I can't the the forest through the trees. I would like to put my new phone back to the android 6 version with the bug. Can anyone help me with a tutorial of something on how to do this? Could I for example just run the RUU.exe for android 6 on my phone? At the moment the thing is still very much stock.
Thanks in advance.

You need to go S-off with Sunshine ($25) then RUU back to a 6.0 build. Sunshine is very self-explanatory, and Google/XDA search for info on how to RUU.

As this would be my first time doing such a thing I would like to check
I found this tutorial: androidexplained. com /htc-10-s-off/
So I would need to unlock the bootloader, put TWRP on it and root it. Right?
And then follow the tutorial: theunlockr. com /2016/08/18/unroot-htc-10/
The kernel files on the htcdev site wouldn't be needed I guess.

Not anymore I believe. Just go to the Sunshine site on your phone, download the app. Run it and it will check to see if its able to gain temproot and s-off. From there just pay the fee. If it doesn't work, then youll have to do as you wrote first.

Well, did the tests, can't get temproot. cr*p

Watch the Rootjunky videos. He will guide you step by step on getting started. Start with Unlocking the Bootloader, then How to Root, then How to S-off. Happy flashing.....

- Unlock
- root
- S-off
- Run Android 6 RUU which is in line with your region

as far as I know the unlock method of htc dev doesn't give you s-off (which seems to be confirmed by yourself saying you're still s-on). S-on means "security on" what in other words means you won't be able to flash a custom recovery (if I'm not mistaken here).
You said that you have read every thread here about this - so you should know as it's mentioned all over this forum (that htc dev isn't the best method...). For how - and if - you still could get there I''m not too sure but you probably need to do an RUU, downgrade etc to do the suggested method (of the two corresponding threads here) instead of the htc dev thing.
But as I said: I_m not sure if you still can - probably someone has experience here?

No, no. He will be able to flash a custom recovery if he unlocked it using HTCDev, he won't, however, be able to modify the internal storage while the phone is booted.

ah, yes, thx for clearifying - so you can't get control over the partitions or what does it mean?
The htc dev method gives a different output to revo or alpha, if it says s-on with unlocked somewhere then fastboot is the only method that will work for flashing a custom recovery and although some things like the revovery partition are unlocked for flashing, some important things like radio aren't hence the s still being on........
I presume if it says s-on and locked then yes you have probably gone wrong somewhere and locked it again.
Theres not many people on here that have used the htc dev unlock tool i don't think so support might be a bit thin as we don't know much about it, try running through the htc dev unlock method again to hopefully get it unlocked again and then flash cwm by the fastboot method.
If it says locked then i can't think of any other way, downgrading to hboot 1.01.0001in order to use revolutionary may work but i'm not sure if you can or not as i have personally never done it.

i already tried buzz downgrade a long ago.i used the method as it is told on the website..:good:
but don't know why it doesn't work properly i have no idea why this don't work either. i read number of threats regarding it and i tried to google
with the errors that came with buzz downgrade. something just goes wrong with it in the first step but it just doesn't get completed. the phone does not respond when i ran the buzz downgade utility even after installing the htc driver from the buzz downgrade itself (don't remember exactly that it is explained over the internet). i did clearly everything whatever is written in the threats about how to use the buzz downgrade but in vain i stopped it trying.
i still have the setup of buzz downgrade in my laptop.:silly:
but why it doesn't work i don't know..and you know what i read that threat too in the past.
may be it is the problem of the bootloader that it is locked..

During your procedure, did you ever achieve the S-OFF ?
You need to downgrade from 1.02.0000 to 1.01.0001 to use Revolutionary.
Try this guide.
If you want revolutionary will automatically download the recovery and install it on your phone.
After gaining S-OFF if you can't get Unrevoked working in order to gain root.
Use this or try SuperOneClick.
Good luck:good:
Try the link in my Sig, it should help. First, I recommend running an RUU and relocking your bootloader using fastboot oem lock.
Then try the debranding and rooting guide in the Sig.

this is the thing i already tried a long ago. when the wildfire was updated to 2.2 version of android ,it changed into "wildfire (buzz) 2.2.1, with HBOOT 1.01.0002"..now as the threats i read there in the past, i can't run the revolutionary or any other method. because the htc has applied some sort of lock on the new bootloader. revolutionary gave some error which i don't remember as per the threats. in the mean time nobody able to find the solution of this new 1.01.0002 bootloader unlocking. then i that time i heard of htc dev website and in that time i used that website to unlock my bootloader and alas it got unlocked and my bootloader has been changed to 1.02.000.. but now i again find that my bootloader is locked may be.. how i don;t know about that.. i tried to run that method of buzz downgrade number of times thoroughly again and again as if u read in the thread above it give some sort of error and does't do anything for me. so i asked what else i do then this , again do i need go to htc dev website to unlock bootloader ??

I never tried htcdev method so i have no idea about that. You should probably try their method once again,if that doesn't work, use the Gold card tool to downgrade the HBOOT using this guide.
Code:
Step 1: run step1.bat from the package. This will downgrade your MISC partition to allow for the RUU downgrade.
At the end, GoldCardTool will start up, to allow you to create a goldcard which you will need before starting Step 2
Step 2: run step2.bat from the package. This will downgrade your ROM version to HTC WWE Froyo for Wildfire (unbranded).
If you get a Customer ID error while doing this, your goldcard is not working!
Create a new goldcard and re-run step2
or follow usaff22's guide.

You didn’t answer me,What is the information on your HBOOT screen?
Power off the phone and ensure the phone is completely off. Then hold POWER + VOL-DOWN buttons together until the white HBOOT screen appears. Tell us your HBOOT info.
You are getting Customer ID error,It’s a bad Goldcard. You will have to create a new Goldcard.
>Connect it to your computer using an SD Adapter and format the card to FAT32 file system once again.
>Redownload and reextract the package.
>Follow this guide to create the Goldcard. It’s a bit more detailed.
Before doing anything download CCleaner and TFC and run them.TFC will ask you to reboot.Reboot the PC.
Now make the Goldcard.Good luck.

not really clear to me also - if I got him right he initially has been on 1.01.0002 (because of the Android update). Because there hasn't been a possibility by revolutionary yet at that time and for that bootloader he unlocked it at the htcdev site what made it 1.02.000.
But I'm a bit confused, too, so a detailed information of the fastboot screen would really help (or a pic).

[Q] Problem getting identifier token

Hi all,
Hopefully this is not a questian thats already been asked, I couldnt find it.
I want to root and s-off my Desire Z to use it with another ROM, when I want to do the first step unlocking the bootloader via htcdev I'm stuck somewhere in the beginning. When I try to get the identifier token in the command prompt I get an error.
First about the phone:
Android version 2.3.3
HTC sense version 2.1
softwareversion: 2.42.405.4
S-on
Hboot 0.85.0013
What I first did was using the Quick root application from this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1870652 to root the device with the universal exploit.
Later I wanted to unlock the bootloader so i followed the steps at the htcdev site. Everything works except when i type the command: 'fastboot oem get_identifier_token' in de command prompt I get a command error. After searching I found out that this probably has something to do with my hboot version. So I tried to update it with the RUU provided by htcdev, but the RUU says I have to update my device. My device says there is no update. (there is also a * indicating that the hboot should be updated when I select the HTC desire Z as the phone I want the bootloader to be unlocked, I select the HTC desire Z A7272)
When I try to unroot my device again with the quick root application it says my phone is allready unrooted.
Whats do I do wrong?
Many thanks for all the help I get!
The “Quick root application” is only for S-OFF devices. You are S-ON, you did not root your phone. That’s why the application says your phone is already unrooted.
I’m not sure about unlocking the bootloader per htcdev site. I think our device is not supported, only newer devices are. Our firmware doesn’t know the command, that’s why you get the error message. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.
You have to S-OFF your phone first. There are some good guides on this site, just search.

Thanks! This means I have to follow another route.
Maybe someone else has an idea, otherwise I'll look for a different method.
Internet usually uses this order:
the basic steps will be:
1)unlock with htcdev
2)flash recovery
3)flash superuser root files.
4)rewrite the misc image with adb and downgrade to froyo
5)re-unlock htcdev hboot
6)re-flash recovery
7)re-flash superuser root files and flash unrevoked's "forever" s-off patch
But you think this is impossible for me?
our phones are supported but I don't recommend the htc offical method as it is sure to give you many headaches down the road. rooting your phone and gaining true soff is realitively easy, just google search "cyanogen vision root wiki" "xda wiki g2 root" "strawmetal root pdf"
read these guides, and when you feel comfortable go for it, every question you can think of has been answered on xda so search around a bit. if you need extra help log onto freenode #g2root

I do think the desire z is supported. It is listed: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader
however, it is starred: * Indicates HBOOT update required.

then use the new RUU next to it to enable the unlocking capability.
HTC EU 2.42.405.2 PC1011000 Download
Thanks for correcting me.
I was wrong, it IS possible to unlock our phone using htcdev.
However it is not recommended. See for example this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750978
Thanks!
I tried to use this (in my screen there is no RUU next to the phone but this RUU is listed in the first screen you get before step 1 unloucking bootloader), as indicated in my first post, bur this RUU gives an error:
It first wants to get my ROM to 2.42.405.2 before it can update hboot. My ROM version is 2.42.405.4.
So when I use the RUU the program says I dont have the newest ROM so I should try to get that by updating my phone via settings/software update. However my phone indicates that there is no update available for my phone.
Weird stuff..

I had the same issue on another device (Wildfire S). It is because the tool was made in the time when 2.42.405.2 was the latest ROM. I think the only solution is to wait till HTC updates their tool or to downgrade your phone. However, if you manage to downgrade your phone, you are halfway to get a S-OFF without htcdev
Thanks for all the help I got!
I'll post here what I've done to root my phone in case someone has the same problem.
First I downgraded my phone, the only guide that could help me with that is this one:

After that I rooted my phone I installed the cyanogen mod 7.2 and for that I used this guide:

If you follow this guides to the letter you should be oke. I'm really happy I did it!

No offense against the guys that write these toolkits to make it "easier" but, stay away from it if you can, you don't really learn anything by using these toolkits.
That said,
Try and unlock the bootloader manually, as shown once when you sign up to htcdev.com and follow their instructions to get bootloader unlocked. OR
You can go for Sunshine S-OFF ($25) it roots, unlocks bootloader and gives S-OFF all-in-one.

It technically only temp-roots. You still have to fully root using a custom recovery or adb push. However, once the bootloader is unlocked, that is fairly simple.
I would actually suggest that as an upgrade, though. It would be nice if, at the tail end of the process, Sunshine would offer to permanently root the phone.
Hi.
Now I unlocked the bootloader manually and installed twrp as custom recovery. After this I installed SuperSU over twrp to get root.
*//
All works fine, but I have a little problem.
Now i cant take screenshots. If I try, I get the message that no screenshot can be taken because the app can´t save them.
Does anyone have some ideas how I can fix it?

Fixed "Created a folder called screenshot1 and delete the other screenshot folder. Once it is deleted remove the "1" so it still only Screenshot."
Additionally, I want to make the SD-Card writeable for all apps, has someone a link to tutorial?

How to root my HTC One M8 (Android 6.0)?

I would like to root my M8, it has the latest OTA update from HTC which is Android 6.0. I have the developer edition, from what I've heard, the bootloader is already unlocked right?
I've seen some guides but most of them are outdated or they are meant to be used with Android 4.4.4.
I must say I'm not an expert when talking about phones, so is there a step by step guide to root an M8 with marshmallow? I would really appreciate any help.
The bootloader screen will indicate the bootloader status (LOCKED, UNLOCKED or RELOCKED) near the top of the screen.
In general, the process is:
1) Unlock the bootloader by HTCDev.com (if its not already unlocked).
2) Fastboot flash TWRP 3.0 custom recovery: https://twrp.me/devices/htconem8gsm.html
3) Backup your stock ROM in TWRP - lots of folks have been running into bootloop or no boot after trying to root (but probably usually when trying to use an obsolete version TWRP and/or SuperSU - but it never hurts to be safe and have a backup).
4) In TWRP, flash SuperSU v2.76 to root: https://download.chainfire.eu/969/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip

Thanks for the answer. Just one more question. My bootloader is already unlocked, but it says "S-ON" under "UNLOCKED", will that be a problem?

Nope, that is just fine. S-on is perfectly okay for most mods, such as root, and flashing ROMs.
You only need s-off to do some very specific things, such as flashing modified hboots, manually flashing radio, changing CID&MID, downgrading by RUU, etc.
I have a simple doubt regarding flashing twrp. Does this means I can flash twrp through adb without getting root access to get root access.I usually root my devices using kingroot, works perfect for my old phone micromax. It also works for my htc one m8 when it was kitkat. But after I update to marshmallow Kingroot doesn't work for it,tried many times. If you could answer my question I would be very thankfull

You don't need root to install TWRP, if that is what you mean. You just need an unlocked bootloader.
Thanks a lot, have already unlocked the bootloader.

what carrier ? if you are on gsm just flash TWRP 3.0.2-0 from official website
https://twrp.me/devices/htconem8gsm.html
after you flash TWRP recovery you will find option to backup it's too easy to understand how it works ( just check the partitions you want to backup and confirm your choices by sweep to proceed the process )
after you make a backup flash the latest supersu.zip from here ( choose TWRP installable.zip )

I think you're looking at some really outdated info or guide. TWRP hasn't been carrier specific for about 2 years; with Verizon and Sprint being the only ones you had to look out for. But TWRP was unified long ago (so Sprint/Verizon no longer requires a different TWRP version). You'll see from ahmed's link, that it specifies "All variants" of the M8. The exception would be if you have an M8s; and maybe another oddball variant or two (which are really different hardware). But as long as its a true "M8" the TWRP version linked by ahmed will work.
If you have any doubts or concerns about the M8 version, connect the phone to your computer, reboot to fastboot mode and do command fastboot getvar all and post the results so we can take a look (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

No, you can't flash SuperSU without first flashing TWRP. Why would threads/guides tell you to do something that isn't necessary, if you can just skip it?
Simply put, you can only flash official "signed" files from the stock recovery. You need a custom recovery like TWRP to flash SuperSU.

Once you install TWRP, you can use it to create a backup of your stock unrooted ROM and user data. And its highly recommended to do so, before you flash SuperSU. Not only will this give you an easy way to revert/recover if something goes wrong with the root attempt; but you will also have a backup of your stock, unrooted ROM if you ever want it.
There are other ways to backup your data, but that depends on what "stuff" you are talking about (as that vague description doesn't tell us what you actually want to backup). For instance, for files, photos, etc. you can just copy and paste them to your computer as a backup.

I'm not sure what are you talking about since I'm new to the whole thing I believe that firewater has something to do with S-off which is something I couldn't do because all the guides says download firewater and the links takes me to sunshine which i believe cost me money to do ? sorry correct me if I'm wrong but I'm just a newbie beside I don't need s-off right ? what does that have to do with my problem ?

Firewater was an all-in-one kit used to unlock bootloader and achieve s-off. The guys that created this went on to create Sunshine, leaving firewater project behind, so any guides from 2014 are likely obsolete. Unlocking the bootloader is as simple as going to htcdev.com, making an account and following the instructions there-it's super easy. S-off isn't necessary for most.

Firewater and the AIO (all-in-one) toolkit are 2 different things. Firewater is an (obsolete) s-off method. May have also contained a temp root, and some other things (can't remember exactly, it's been 2 years - and doesn't matter anyway - see more below). But firewater is not typically referred to as a "toolkit" or "all-in-one" (never seen it referred to that way, actually).
All-in-one toolkit (there are a couple) is a PC for unlocking the bootloader, root, and several other things (may have had a link for firewater, don't remember - again it's irrelevant for reasons below).
The toolkits are not recommended. They haven't been updated in a long time, and therefore use very obsolete files for TWRP and SuperSU (when applicable). You will have issues flashing many ROMs with old TWRP (and I'm surprised you haven't yet). Plus, you will probably find in bootloader and fastboot getvar, that the OS number is now blank (known bug in old versions of TWRP). I would suggest flashing the current version TWRP 3.1.1 using fastboot, to prevent issues moving forward. Current TWRP is fully compatible with current ROMs - but will not fix the bug of OS number being blank (need to flash firmware or RUU to fix that - but it's just a minor thing).
Firewater doesn't work, no matter what you do. It required an online server component, which the devs took offline over 2 years ago. Sunshine ($25 US) is the only current s-off method. But be aware, that most folks don't need s-off. S-off isn't needed to root, flash custom ROMs, and most other mods. s-off is only needed for very specific things, such as manually flashing radios, changing CID/MID, and some other things.
redpoint73 thank you so much for such a help truly gentleman much appreciate it .
It appears you can no longer use the usual method to unlock the bootloader. I just got this phone the other day in fantastic condition as a gift.
HTCDev told me there was an error or try again later. I'll upload screenshots later.
Not true... I used www.htcdev.com to unlock the bootloader of my HTC One M8 today.
I have this phone, with Android 6.0 and bootloader locked. However it has become practically unusable as it regularly powers off by itself, most likely due to lack of storage (there's only 0.6 GB left...). I've already uninstalled all of my few (useful) apps, I have no media on it whatsoever, but it is just filled up with bloatware that is pre-installed and gets re-installed automatically and that I thus cannot get rid of. I don't want to buy a new phone (it's in good condition) but from reading on the internet I understand that the only option is to unlock and root it, and put an oem on it exempt of all of these useless apps.
So my questions are, is this really the only option and if so is it still possible on this old machine to unlock the bootloader, and to get the right - clean - software for it somewhere?
I registered at HtC dev. There's a page that walks you through the unlocking process. So I should be able to do that part, if what FlexMcMurphy said in July last year still is true... For the rest, I'm quite new to this process but there are pages here on XDA that describe rooting and flashing. I'm ready to give it a try, but could use help if stuck.
Any reply/help would be wonderful !
Thank you in advance.

S-OFF from S-ON Viper Rom

Hello everyone, i posted this in the Viper ROM thread but I think maybe I can get more help here
I need some guidance, I would like to know the correct process to be s-off with sunshine and maybe convert my device to the US version. I am in the latest version of Viper rom and my version of OS in download mode says 1.53.600.3 - CID 032 that corresponds to Telcel Mexico.
Thank you very much in advance.

1) To s-off Download the Sunshine app from http://theroot.ninja and purchase a license.
2) For converting follow this guide
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/guide-how-to-drand-convert-htc-10-to-t3374593
I would try to find an RUU for your current version before converting, in case you ever need return to stock.

Not sure if Magisk interferes with sunshine. Sunshine should work even on non-rooted phones if you're on Marshmallow. You can ask for support on the Sunshine website.
just an fyi that if you are concerned in the future to pass safetynet, use a 6.xxx pre-nougat ruu, then do sunshine.
in sunshine, choose the method that allows you to keep the bootloader locked: sunshine soff on the htc 10 works differently and will give you the same access/rights as if the bootloader was unlocked. sunshine can only do this soff 'trick' on pre 7.0 fw.
if you do a 7.0 ruu 1st, then there are multiple other steps to passing safetynet.
ps: its been awhile since i researched the above, you may have to confirm the above info. sorry.

unfortunately, no I don't know the steps. but, as is mostly the case, search xda for the following : safetynet, 7. xxx fw, and your root method (supersu or magisk = magisk hide).
once I read about the sunshine 6.xxx bootloader option, I basically stopped researching. I believe viper rom can pass safetynet if you choose the magisksu version of the full rom version. good luck.
edit: check the sunshine threads here on xda; they may also help.
