Approach gesture - Moto Z2 Play Questions & Answers

So on my normal Z play, the approach gesture works pretty terrible (I've owned 2 and they were about the same). I have to basically slap or shake it. This is because I believe it uses just the proximity instead of IR sensors.
My question is, does this gesture work good on the Z2 play? Does it have IR sensors like the Z/Z Force?
Thanks!

I don't know if it has IR sensors, but my complaint with the approach on this device is actually that it's TOO sensitive.
Even as I type this, it keeps lighting up like a Christmas tree. I had the moto Z and it was perfectly tuned sensitivity wise, but something is definitely different on the Z2P. Movements that would not cause the og Z to light up keep causing the Z2P to. Hopefully moto allows configuration of the sensitivity level.

@cantsingh In my case it is also very sensitive, and find the way moto display shows notifications pretty useless.
So I just turned off the moto display, and use these free and "open source" apps instead: WaveUp and Glimpse Notifications. With those two apps the screen turns on when notifications arrive and/or when I wave over the motion sensor. The screen turns also on when I take the phone out of the pocket. This works great for me.

Initial impressions

So I've used mine for a couple of hours, moving from a Z3c. This is what I've noticed so far:
* Still has the annoying notification light that illuminates your room at night to tell you that your battery is fully charged... all, night, long.
* Cannot adopt SD cards as internal storage
* Comes with less bloatware than the Z3C, but it's still there.
* At 4.6" the 720 display is sharp and crisp, the colours seem bang on.
* Seems more responsive
* Comes with Swipe keyboard only
* High FPS camera looks like it's only usable in brilliant sunlight and is also a crop - have to play more with this
* Xperia transfer apps works pretty well. Have copied over my messages and some apps (some with data) from my old phone to the new with a USB cable. Although I can't seem to connect my old phone without it sucking all the power out of my new one - if I disable power delivery, nothing else works on it.
* Finger print sensor seems to work well.
* If you use a glass screen protector, you can't get it in the official dock without using a bigger bracket and some cardboard.
Can you tell me more about the Xperia transfer apps?
I need to copy some apps from my S5, and usually I use Titanium Backup, but due to the OEM stuff with the Xperia, that's out of the question.
Take a look on Play for Xperia Transfer Mobile. I don't know if it will work on other devices, but I don't see why it wouldn't. It allows you to transfer stuff directly, wifi or via a computer.
Another feature lacking:
* Remote shares
Can't seem to mount a SFTP/SSH or SMB location any more - which is really irritating.

This needs more praise. I'm coming from the Z5C, the fingerprint sensor on the XZ1C is so much better in every aspect.
I registered my fingerprints while my hands were dry and comfortable, but the XZ1C has been able to instantly recognize them every single time so far, no matter how sweaty they were. It's also blazing fast, almost instant.
It's a really amazing experience for me, because on the Z5C, unless you have the exact same perfect condition fingers, it simply refuses to register, and often I'm forced to swipe the pattern instead.
It's a definite upgrade in this aspect.
I never used fingerprint on any other phones, don't know if this is the norm or exceptional, but regardless the XZ1C's fingerprint sensor is totally usable.

Sent you a PM ?
Build quality on this thing is impressive. Kinda looks and feels like an all-metal device but only the top and bottom pieces are metal.
Scanner
Is it difficult to check the lockscreen without unlocking the phone? I feel like Id hit the lockbutton to check my notifications and auto unlock it every time...double tap to wake prevented this in the past
It is very responsive - but if you really want to see your lock screen, just jab the button with the end of your finger instead the flat of it.

TFW the fingerprint sensor works TOO well, lol
They really need to bring back double tap to wake/sleep though. I initially thought maybe they just didn't have enough time to implement it for the still relatively new Android 8.0, but then I found out that they've been excluding the feature since earlier phones which were on Android 7.x.
love the fingerprint sensor very responsive for sure, tested it before i returned the phone, it feels fast. scored over 155000 in antutu benchmark. display is brighter on the same level than the z3c feels good in the hand too. but thats it for me it was a waste of time to even consider it as my upgrade the camera is a crap. much darker then the camera in my z3c and every straght line i tried to shoot became a bend unless it was in the middle of the sensor or screen. thats it i am finished with sony for a while i had sony phones since the P1 , P990 era i was loyal had z1 (that was too big) than as soon i seen the z1 compact i went with it and loved it small waterproof powerful. had my z3c and broke it so went with z3 and z3+ after (still too big) so got a z3c again and seen the x compact (it was not IP68) so when i learned the new xz1 compact i preordered it. And it was a terrible disappointment thanks sony this is how you losing loyal customers. sony phones were mostly noticable by they excellent xmor rs cameras since android era. looks they forgot along the line how to make good mobile cameras. If this camera would be in my Roadhawk dashcam (which also using sony rs sensors) i would not even notice it. but in a flagship phone is terrible, the problem is on sony forums and sony admitted there is a hw issue, and sony customer service today just told me that there is no problem with the camera sensor there is nothing to fix or recall. well then probably i photographed a rear event of bendy lines in the carpark of CPW. I am out sad good bye to sony.
Really enjoying the phone so far, its fast, screen is great, sound quality is good on earpiece and speakers. Not done too much with the camera yet so hoping the bendy straight lines issue isn't too noticeable. The fingerprint sensor is good but odd after having the separate rear one on the nexus 5x. The form factor is good too and i don't really notice the difference in size between my old 5X (5.2 inches) and the Sony. Bloatware is not too terrible and at least you can disable it so it wont keep trying to update.
Battery life in standby is great and hoping this follows through to screen on time too now i get to really use it this week.
Received the phone today with the free $200 headphones. Overall feel of the phone is premium. It's very fast and seems like the battery will last long. However there is a distortion in the camera and bad low light performance. I also have a dust particle under the screen. I am returning it and sticking with my trusty z3 compact.
What a pity, as the phone is beautiful

I think the Z3C felt better in my hand with the glass back. The plastic back doesn't feel like a £500 device to me. But I'd rather a plastic back to a lower spec device.
Lucky you got some fancy headphones, I couldn't find that offer in the UK. Best I could find was with the SBH24 bluetooth adapter, which is quite good. Seems to last for 8 hours at work. Audio is marred a bit with a hiss in quiet sections which isn't apparent when you connect your headphones directly to the phone.
The flashlight is pretty weak..
Still uses wierd vibration when typing* like its ramping Up ( The faster u type The stronger it vibrates)
My Z3C is tired, so I'm watching this with interest while I wait for an official Canadian release for the XZ1C. The full size is out Oct 26 here.... Hopefully I don't have to wait till Christmas.
I am hoping I get some other option besides the swype keyboard, I'm old fashioned and like my touch typing.
I had an international S8 that I sold to get this phone. I think the phone is super fast, with a level of smoothness that I'd never seen from a phone (whether 3d games or animations). I like the smaller size in my hand, being not to tall. I love the headphone jack on top of the phone.I have yet to take a picture so I have no feedback.
I think I'm going back to the S8 (950f or 950fd) though. I have a few reasons:
1. Lack of root without camera damage: I want to reverse the navigation button order (to match Samsung's). I want to disable every single help menu/introduction that pops up
2. The screen may now be too small for me as I struggle to type with swiftkey. Samsung took phone design to the next generation over the last 2 years and this phone feels outdated on the outside. It's bigger/heavier than the Z3C, which was my first Xperia
3. No LTE Video calls - This was a major reason I wanted VOLTE, to make native video calls to my wife's TMO S7

We not even had the cpw adverted £250 worth sony bluetooth headphone. By the time i got my phone the offer disappeared from stores. nevermind it would be awkward to opt in for it when i returned the phone next morning. Lol
I have returned this phone.
Reasons:
1. The metal edge on the bottom is hurting/irritating my skin after long usage! Its simply too sharp. this is unacceptable for a compact phone.
2. Camera is not 600€ worth! Its distorted and Sony is not even announcing to make a lens correction profile in cam software.
3. The vibration motor is still ****! they have used the same **** motor already in the X compact. its loud like a bee when you press quickly on the keyboard and not the way like on xz premium or z3 compact.
For this money i have bought a S7 flat and the camera is way better. really better. it has functions that sony software never had. AE/AF lock, distortion fix, great manual mode, RAW etc.... unfortuantely its a bit too big but sorry: better big than an metal edge in my palm.

I have resolved this without root: disabling notifications for sony's apps and installing custom navigation bar (and giving permissions over adb) to reverse the button order
2. The screen may now be too small for me as I struggle to type with swiftkey. Samsung took phone design to the next generation over the last 2 years and this phone feels outdated on the outside. It's bigger/heavier than the Z3C, which was my first Xperia
This has been mitigated. I set a 480 DPI within developer's options and the swiftkey was the expected size.

Ultrasonic Sensor?

Kind of a random question but does anyone know if the Moto Display runs off an ultrasonic sensor? Considering there’s only one true proximity sensor I can’t imagine that powers the Moto Display like other moto models. Also if I’m in a well lit room and have the phone set on a counter or something I can hear a pulsing noise from the speaker until something gets close, then it shuts off and Moto Display comes up? Surely nobody has noticed that but I just randomly discovered it and was curious, CPU-Z just says it has a moto glace sensor

How does this phone know it ??? (actually, Moto Display question)

Does anyone here know how does Z2 Play (and also maybe X4, because it's almost equally good at it) know that my hand is "somewhere close to it" so it lights up its display ?
Initially I thought it's only proximity sensor, but I can move my hand toward the phone even from its side, and it "senses" its presence even from a few centimeters to the left or right.
Then I thought it might be the display panel set to some insane sensitivity level, but I really don't know...
Maybe it senses change in the environment around antenna ?
I've seens something about some "ultrasonic sensor" but X4 does not have one (at least it does not say so in its description) but is it used for Moto's "sense" ?
Most Probably the sensor to sense the Hand wave/motion is right under the Fingerprint scanner, just try placing a finger in the air right above the scanner and see

That should be the proximity sensor that checks if the phone is in a pocket so I can't disable the screen off gestures.
Yes, it's a proximity sensor, and it's important against unwanted control and activation of the display during calls or if is in pocket. It's an IR LED that detect the distance to +-5cm. Battery consumption is basically zero. About 10mA thanks to IR. And lifetime is hundreds thousand hours.
On a similar principle works TV control remote (you can see light with camera too if you press button) so it's safe to live.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO1P8jGYU78 more info about proximity.
Oh, I see. When it is in my pocket it should keep unlocked right? Currently I did disable this resource and it keeps flashing for what kind of proximity reason?
Hey I think its about the frontal camera maybe?
Yeah it is similar to the remote control of my TV launching laser when I press a button.
I notice when the back camera is recording also there is a laser light on the back glass.
No, its should be locked. Simple test: cover sensor with finger and do knock knock wake up. Display must stay off.
Laser on Back side Is focus for camera.

Some initial [email protected] S10+

Spent quite sometime with the S10+, well ..with a live demo unit.
Some personal initial impressions:
- Though secure , ultrasonic fp scanner is slow, slower than the optical scanner on the OnePlus 6T- something that is already slower than a conventional capacitive scanner. Also, once registered, it was a hit or a miss everytime I tried unlocking as I was not able to memorize the suitable spot @ FP scanner when I wasn't careful enough .Samsung is likely to make the experience better with future updates and I hope my muscle memory will improve in future. Also, wet finger and the scanner are against each other- doesn't work
(with a quick OTA [email protected] build no G975FXXU1ASBA, the FP recognition is now improved)
- No notification LED anymore.
- Bixby sucks like before. Now with an addition like Bixby routine that mimics Google assistant routine.
- Slipperly back.(- prism white, don't know about the other vatiants yet). Felt like it slips more than my Note 9 on the same surface.(just felt when I tried alongside the Note9, no accurate testing).
- Since bezels are thinner than ever, it felt like I was blocking the border contents accidentally no matter how I was holding.
- Feels lighter, way lighter than the Note 9 and also shorter, narrower.
- Primary shooter has two zoom modes compared to one in the Note 9.
- Bezel-less and a very premium design overall.
- Bigger battery ,yet smaller form factor. Yet to understand the endurance though.
PS: I see negatives in a gadget fast, way faster than the positives. As such, the +ve points would easily overpower the -ve points on the S10's, especially the +model.

I assume there would be a setting to show on the screen where the sensor is located to guide you, either on the AOD or lock screen. I'm a little upset about the wet finger and scanner not working. I thought that was a perk of having this type of sensor...

Have you dug around in the settings to see if there is a setting to use part of the screen as the "notification LED"? I've heard rumors that the camera bezel is used in place of the notification LED.

Aside from the fp registration process , I was not greeted with any other guidance once the screen was locked.Unfortunately, the demo I spent time on, wasn't showing that in default settings and I did not dig further into the settings to find out. If not there, I assume Retail units will have it.
Again.. it's just that I couldn't find an LED on the status bar. Will update more about how notification is taken care of using AOD(if at all it's different from existing ones and paid special attention to, for notifications) when I play with it again.

This doesn't make sense. Are you sure the device wasn't faulty? Also when your turn on the device the lockscreen has an indicator of where to place your finger to unlock the device on all on the videos I've seen. Something must be wrong with the device you played with.

A lot of the people reviewing the phone said they had the same issues with the FP reader.
I see many YouTubers reviews in regards to the FP reader, I'll wait and test myself.
Same was said with the optical that they are slow and Don't function, now I have tested and owned the Huawei mate 20 pro that was just fine, I did not have the issues YouTubers were crying on about.
I now have the Vivo Nex S and again no issues it unlocks first time, I would put it in the say 98% odd occasion it might be slow or not respond as well. I must be the fortunate one I guess lol
What I am saying is don't buy Into the beeeep, sometimes they are full of beeeep, not saying it will be perfect, but I can say from my optical use I haven't been annoyed with it. It well works 98% of the time.

1. Definitely it was not faulty. I had to pretty much forget the fp scanner when finger was totally wet. When it was slightly wet, it was hit or a miss situation. I tested it with another unit today only to have the same result. Then tested with one more unit - nothing changed.
2. When you register fp, it shows , once the screen goes off ,it doesn't anymore. You will have to wake the screen first , only then the "indicator" shows, not when you directly would want to unlock using the fp from the lockscreen when it's off. Dug further into settings and AOD to look for any possible toggle, found none. With AOD, it indeed showed up notification and stuff but not the fp guide/indication. Toggles like lift to wake and the new "double tap to wake" (new for a samsung without 3rd party launcher) are there .
Going forward, I spoke to a Samsung senior level trainer ( is known to me) (& for God's sake I did not want to talk to customer care execs) who later told me "the phones you have tested are with pre-release software and some are with Retail mode on in them without having the actual Retail software meant for customers. You will see "all that" once it is officially released in the market(i.e. 8 March).
I will have a full retail unit in March 6th for sure. Till then, let's see what more info we get. :good:

AR emoijis are customizable: Skin color, hair, clothes, facial features, name and age. They seem to have idle actions such as dancing. Keep in mind that I didn't try AR in previous phones can't do a direct comparison.
Also, you can create AR emoji masks (where your head is replaced). The camera supports HDR10+ & HEVC (one or the other!).

In terms of looks they're closer to Microsoft's avatars, since they're deformed humans instead of animals or emojis. Facial tracking is still there, so you can blink or whatever. Dunno if it'll gain traction with content creators, but I can see myself using masks.
Just played with a S10 in store and there is an indicator on AOD for where to place your finger for the fingerprint sensor. Dunno what software OPs unit is running but it doesn't seem to be the latest.

Yes I've noticed that too in a YT video. But I did not see that in AOD on, with the units I played with. (attached pic).
Unless tapped on the screen, that area was not visible. That experience is similar to this video: timing at 04.00
