Question about thickness of the ZL - Sony Xperia ZL

Hi guys. A question to all users having Xperia ZL and a caliper. Could someone mesure thickness of the handset and post some pictures? Where exactly it mesures 98mm, where camera lens is located, or on the middle of back cover? How about on the edges? Does it feel thick in a hand? Is it worth buing

Actually is very small comparing with today's cell phones. Worth buying if you want a average phone. It's comfy in the hand good Camera but small battery. You have to charge in the middle of day every day

Careful with the camera lens..

Had my One X for a week and already I have a couple scratches on the camera lens... I'm ultra careful with my devices too!
This is simply from just sitting my phone down as it rests on the lens..

I'm thinking now that I'm going to have to order a case... I hate putting cases on my phones... Especially the one x as it's pretty huge as is..
What case did you order?

My only gripe with this phone is that there is no protective ring around the camera.
You need a case with this phone unless you want scratches on the camera lens. Kind of a bummer cause I prefer my phones naked.

i didnt order one yet, at&t around here is getting the One X(L) the 6th of May which is coming up so once that comes in i'll get a case from there. Amazon retailers had ugly cases and they said 18-26 days shipping to the states. F that noise.
p.s. i hate cases too, i might have bought a case when i acquired the phone but i figured the lens was set inside the metal ring more and that the gorilla glass would hold up but after seeing someone on these forums with a shattered screen already, i am not taking any chances.
There appear to be two protector screens on the market that come with a protector for the lens. I tried ordering both. The Nillkin from piyobaby on fleabay has been a noshow since being ordered on April 13 despite an email to the vendor and I will probably have to dispute payment. The Martin Fields came through Amazon and seems fine to me, though I did see an allusion to failed application elsewhere on these boards. So ymmv, but I think trying to keep the lens from scratching is worth the effort.

I picked up a case for this very reason. Got a shell case on Amazon for $5.00 and it seems to do a great job protecting the nipple,

Yeah i'l ultra careful with my phone too and i place it on a soft surface everysingle time and still got the scratch, it's crazy.
At home i rest it on the leather couch arm
At work i rest it on a notepad
any other time its in my pocket
In the car i have one of those non slip gel mats.
Had mine 6 weeks now and, touch wood, nothing done to it.
This is my biggest fear as well.
I dont care about the non-removable battery or no sd-card, neither if the SGS3's Exynos processor wipes the floor with Tegra 3.
But this Camera Design is really off the charts. I received my One X yesterday and only carried it in my really clean jeans pocket without anything else. Tiny scratches already. Think that a screen protector will noticeably lower camera quality in various situations.
I thought I had a scratch the other day but it came off.
When I put my phone down it is always on top of my official htc leather case, seems to be doing ok so far, touch wood.

Interesting conversation, but my Martin Fields protector seems to be doing fine re the lens. Just a couple of points: this is an 8 mp phone camera. No special claims about the lens glass quality, although one aspect that very much attracted me is that it shoots at f2. The software is not Lightroom quality and even if it were, the camera makes no pretentions to shooting raw. Even on a supposedly high-quality camera like my Leica, with not exactly cheap lenses, you would shoot raw to maximize the possibility of achieving a high quality output. If shooting in a dark environment and using a flash, your photo can still come out looking unevenly lit, hazy, etc., depending on a lot of factors. If you choose to shoot without a flash, well, not all cameras do well at their highest claimed ISO, which is one reason that people use tripods with a lower ISO and slower shutter speed.
I prefer not having to deal with a scratched lens that could end up ruining every photo to occasionally dealing with some of the effects of glare/flare, etc. Which is one of the reasons I finally caved and decided a couple of my Leica and dslr lenses needed protective filters - and purists will often tell you that even the best "interfere" with the lens.
Try shooting without the flash whenever possible. At f2, this little phone camera can do more than you think and actually produces better (imo) colors.

After a month of use I too have a few scratches on the lens glass around the rim. Nothing to compromise the capture quality yet, but it is clear that this issue will progress without protective measures.
I have been quite careful with the device, carrying it in my pocket without anything else, and now and then putting it on a table. Seems like in incredibly bad engineering solution to make both screen and back cover scratch resistant, yet let the camera lens be compromised so easily, plus placing it right where the phone inavitably contacts any surface it rests on.
I have scratches on ly lens as well. I now put a bit of protection foil over it, which I can replace.
I have scratches as well. I have been really carefull with my phone. The scratches are just from setting it down and thats it. It amazes me that they made the lens design like this. Having the Ring stick out a tad further would have prevented all of this.
I just started using a pouch as I dont like the normal cases. Sometimes I still need to set my phone down and dont want to put it back in the pouch if its going to be for a second.
Thinking about buying the the HTC flip case. Unfortunately they only have it in white and I have the black phone.
Guys are you sure you have a scratch in the camera lens or just a light reflection from inside the Camera because this what I used to think for the past three weeks until last night I was cleaning My Hox and I realized its not a scratch its just a light reflection coming from inside the camera I even told my brother to check it and he said the same thing.

Poll: Case or no case?

Hello folks,
Long-time lurker here and I post before you today with small request - help me help you help me design a better dock!
I'm currently developing a modular multi-device charging stand and the issue I need help with is devices being used with protective cases.
I would be very grateful if you guys could take this quick poll and if you feel like it, provide a little bit of detail about your dock and/or case usage.
The stand is just about ready - I'm just finalising the device dock designs, then it's the initial prototype and if all goes well I will have some
preview models out for an early review (if anyone would like to review one please PM me and I'm sure we can work something out) and I shall post a little showcase here as well.
Many thanks in advance guys and gals!
Hmmm, it seems my Forum-Fu is weak - is there a way to edit a poll? Or would a Mod be kind enough to add two more options to the list?
"Yes. I'm thinking about a dock." and "No. I'm thinking about a dock."
Thanks again!

case save my screen a lot of time
I never use a case on my phone. Hated the thought of taking a nice slim phone and making it bulky. I just never drop it, not that difficult.
Definitely a case is a must for me.I have dropped and bumped my phone 2 or 3 times and the case did the job for me.Without a case I imagine my phone would have been just a broken toy and also by the way even having a good case adds to peace of mind since it adds a little protection value.
Sent from my Xperia Neo V using xda app-developers app
A case is important to me. I work hard for my money and will not take a chance on breaking it. For those that "never" drop their phone, good for you. As far as "ruining" the look of my sleek phone, I couldn't care less about bulk and changing the look of it. I'm not a kid that likes to show off, I'm an older man that uses a phone as a tool, not a show toy. Besides, some cases do actually look good.
Sometimes
I usually use a case when out and about but prefer to take it off whilst at home
Here in Mexico, most phone owners use a case (i.e tpu, silicone, hard plastic) because when don't have insurance plans like you do in U.s. Thus making it cheaper to buy a case ($4 - 8) than to pay for another phone or fix it.

That's OK if you use an easy-off/on case, but some of use those 2 piece hybrids that are a pain to take off and put back on.

Most people I know here in the US don't have insurance on their phones, so having a good case is just as important here as in mexico. Plus, paying $8 a month for insurance is pretty expensive. That's almost $100 a year. No thanks. I'd rather spend $25-35 once for a good heavy duty case and have it for the life of the phone.
I use urban armor gear case. Would be interested in stand for charging multiple devices at once.

I don't one and I wont get one. Just be careful. And it looks ugly tough.
Thanks for all the feedback guys. I've decided, at the risk of fragmentation, I'm going to give buyers the option of either a cased or caseless version of a devices cradle to attach to the dock - it's already going to be tailored to meet individual device needs, I may as well go all the way and offer this too.
As a follow up question:
The stand is currently aiming to support one tablet and one phone charging and displaying on the stand with the possibility of charging 2 extra devices at the same time - one would be resting on the legs of the stand (with small extrusions on the feet to stop the device slipping - this may not be able to fit every device but currently anything ~13cm in length should be fine), and one lying on your desk underneath.
Would people be interested in the option (depending on the size of the base stand) of an additional phone dock in place of a tablet dock? (Or if you're using a larger stand the option of an additional tablet dock? Subject to feasibility of course.)
Many thanks for the replies everyone, I'll be sending the initial design to be 3D printed Monday or Tuesday!
Sometimes the phone can fall to the floor. A simple case of rubber, even pleasant, when you take the phone in hand.
I agree
wolfen69 I think if I had a case like that I would just leave it on. I want a metal case eventually! That would be awesome!
Metal case will protect your device screen when it falls down, but not sensitive sensors, i guess. I'm currently using Samsung S-View case and i am pleased with it. :good:
A case ruins the beauty of my Lumia
But its better to stay safe
Just for the record: I bought my girlfriend some rubber case for her moto g. She bought her phone since it's launch on November and we weren't able to find a case for that model here in Mexico.
She had dropped her phone a couple times without a case, and the phone back got some marks and scratches. Now she had put the case on and dropped her phone in the middle of a street without noticing. When we ran down the street searching for her phone, we found that a car had ran over it, leaving tire marks on the lime green case. To our surprise, both phone and screen were intact, thus, we think a case is the best investment you can do when buying a new phone

I usually don't use a case. It was designed the way it is and should be in the form as is. Unfortunately I use an extended battery and hacked up my original back to my GN2 so I can't even go back to the original feeling of the phone.

Where do you carry your Mi Max?

I am awaiting the arrival of my Mi Max. As of late I have been pondering on whether this device will be too big. All I have as points of reference are youtube videos, hence this thread. So my question is simple: where do you carry your Mi Max? and, in case your answer is "front pocket", how confortable is it? does it limit your movement? e.g., sitting down, bending over, etc.

long answer : when i ordered my phone I was in the same dilemma as yourself.I suggest u make a mockup with craftsheet like I did using dimensions from gsmarena to get a feel of its size.coming to my practical experience, mi max isn't so unwieldy as its claimed to be,the tapered edges help in pocket ability.unless u r wearing overly skinny pants I don't think its going to be a problem.I'm 5ft 11in high,36in waist pants--i can sit, ride my bike, drive without too much of a problem..ur going to feel it but not in an unpleasant sort of way.u get used to it as days go by and can't imagine using anything else, rest of the screens will feel tiny.it happened to me

A mock-up is a great idea. I'm also awaiting delivery of my Mi Max (it's taking too long!!!) and have wondered about the overall size of the handset. I know exactly what you mean about other phones seeming tiny. After I switched to a 5.5" screen I couldn't imagine going back to anything smaller. I'm guessing it's going to be the same with the 6.4"....!

Making a mock up is exactly what I did too, it helped me pull the trigger and buy it. I also have it in my front pocket (generally wearing chinos for work) and I couldn't agree more with what you said. You feel it there but it's not uncomfortable. The only thing is to make sure, if you wear jogging pants for example, is that the pockets are deep enough... I've had it slip out a few times but only when I'm on the sofa so no problem.
The Mi Max feels medium size now and the rest of the screens seem too tiny in comparison. I mean why would you squint just to look at those 5.5 screens . Waste of time.
Also, I was considering getting a 5 inch phone but I'm real glad I chose this instead. I feel there is no point in getting a small phone. Ive attended dinner parties and no one batted an eye when I took my phone out. It's not big at all in real life.
The only con is it doesn't fit into the car cupholder but I just put on top instead of in it so it works.
Also, love the battery life.

Ha, I know what you mean about the cup holder part. It fits in my Honda Accord's cup holder just fine but in the Infiniti Q50 I'm going to be leasing when the Accord lease is up the cup holders are smaller and the phone doesn't fit unless you turn it sideways.

Original accessories for the Tab S3

For those with the Samsung (expensive) cover, could you feedback on:
1. is the magnetic attachment of the tablet to the cover sufficient so there is little chance of the tablet falling out
2. is it possible to place the tablet at an angle to make note taking with the S Pen comfortable, for example if you had a an hour meeting or lecture

For #2 yes.
For #1.... In my opinion there is much more than a little chance... I have had problems twice since I have it.... (2 days....).
I am buying and using Samsung tablets since many years... And I think this is the worse cover I have ever seen... Very ugly with those bars.... And very insecure.... Book cover from s2 was much better and nicer....
So sad with it....

I have the magnetic book-cover and have not had any issues or close-calls with the cover losing its magnetic connection - even when I deliberately pick it up by the front-flap.
I now have the light green book cover. Yes good quality and the magnet is adequate to hold the tablet safely in place. £42 from Amazon UK so still not cheap. Black version is £33 from Amazon.

Samsung original Folio Case, Keyboard Case and S Pen are now on sale at Best Buy USA
Keyboard case is very inefficient. As a normal cover it is too bulky. The attachment of the S-pen is a joke.
I got it for free, but I am quite sure I have to buy a special book cover. Like the one I had on the S2
TheS2 cover fits but does not switch on or off. Is there a solution for that?
HUib
the keyboard cover has been chucked in a cupboard. I'm still looking for a decent case.
Also £599 - tablet is not worth it imho.
Hello, I purchased the green Samsung cover and have no issues. The magnetic connection is strong enough to keep the tablet still, but not too strong to interfere with spen use...
Very satisfied.
