Usage tip Bixby - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

Something I found out the hard way. I was giving Bixby a chance (ok, seeing if I could find funny question/response combinations), and at some point the long-press on the button stopped working.
Solution: Your settings panel MUST be in simple mode for it to work. Seems a little dumb. But anyway.

how did Bixby work for you?
def. not the best i had ... and sometimes it wakes up while im watching a movie or someone is talking near by!
im already looking into remapping the Bixby button with the google assist.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually like Bixby. I also love Google assistant but Bixby can to a lot of things on this phone that Assistant can't. Bixby can do most anything with phone settings that assistant can't. It has also not failed me in searches, navigation, and other commands I throw at it. It can't carry a conversation like Assistant can but I have friends for that [emoji6]

im with you on this one .. at least my friends didn't cost me $900

Overall, Bixby is a new toy, not proving super useful if there's ANY background noise. I've just been using it with the push button & talk mode, and it seems very sensitive and picks up all spoken words from anyone nearby.

I remapped the Bixby button to instantly launch the camera. Best thing I've done on a phone in a long, long time! Phone doesn't have to be unlocked either and it's instant. Doesn't matter what screen you are on or what app you are using! Look for bxActions app on the play store, use the paid version.

Thanks for the tip. I just did the same thing. That Bixby Button was useless! Having quick access to my camera is great though!

Where exactly in settings do you go to do This? I hate Bixby and I feel it slows this phone down so much.

You need the pro verson of bxactions, then it is under actions where you can change it. But first you have to enable bxactions in settings, accessibility, services.

Same here! At first, before I actually started really using it, and investigating others that tried to get it to work, it was frustrating(I don't use the Hi Bixby command, but just the button and talk).. But once I started training it in every location I am usually at, with background noise and all (it only took a few seconds each time, when I was bored and had a moment), it has been great! It does things that no other assistant can, as far as integrating with the phone(along with some of the same Google type stuff, but I never found that useful honestly)... There are a lot of commands and of course it's going to take time to learn them.. But I use Bixby multiple times a day, every day now!

Perhaps I don't talk fast enough for Bixby. With S-Voice command and my BT earpiece, I was able to create an appointment while driving without an issue. It worked nearly 100% of the time. However, with Bixby, I barely can get out half the phrase: "Create an appointment for Steve @ 10am tomorrow morning" before it cuts me off. UGH! Frustrating to say the least. This leaves me with a partial appointment on the screen that I have to pick up to finish.
But last night I discovered just how useless Bixby can be. I was grilling food and wanted a timer set for 4 minutes. I asked Bixby to "Start a timer for 4 minutes". What did it do? It brought up the timer and set it for 4 minutes, BUT IT DIDN'T START! Seriously? So much for hands free usage. After messing with it, I said forget it and used Google Assistant do to the same. It worked, set the timer and automatically started, without having to touch my phone a second time. I miss S-Voice, but I'm really beginning to hate Bixby.
My other annoying feature about Bixby is there are no audible voice replies. I say "Call the wife". Sometimes it works, sometimes it may not hear me correctly and doesn't speak to me asking for more input. It's on the screen, but not in my ear. Someone at Samsung needs to understand the object behind voice commands is to be HANDS FREE. This means it should not require you to pick up your phone to confirm something. At least S-Voice worked pretty good for that. I really wish there was a way to go back to that software instead. And no, I don't have the "Hi Bixby" feature turned on. I don't like anything listening to me all the time.

Screen off and on without using power button !

hi all
first time poster long time reader
I am so tired of trying **** apps.
Could somebody please tell me what app works with the nexus four to allow me to touch the screen somehow to see a text message etc when it arrives??
for the first time ever I am missing the button in my iPhone that let's me hit it to see what is going on at a glance.
I just want a way to toggle the screen on without hitting the power button on the Nexus 4
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The only way to do this is to leave the screen on, which would drain the battery. There's probably an app that would turn the screen off (or dim it), but this would keep your phone awake and drain the battery.
Someone feel free to chime in and correct me if there is such an app.

For the Gnex there's an app called “PGM", I emailed the developer if he had intention to update the app so it works with the Nexus⁴, but sadly he doesn't have the phone yet.

There is an app for that called tap tap app uses proximity sensor to lock and unlock screen.
Not positive is works on 4.2 but worth a shot.

Just wait for PGM to be updated for Nexus 4 support, OP; I can vouch for its greatness. You can enable double tap or slide to unlock gesture to turn the screen on. Once you get used to this, you seriously forget you have a power button.

It appears to work, but needs some calibration. I'm only able to get it working 30% of the time (if even).
you may try Smart Screen On : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.android.smartscreenonlite

I'm waiting on a kernel that has Sweep2Wake...that would be awesome with this phone.
Wow I cannot believe the responses I got...
Thanks everyone!
I settled on the Smart Screen On.
Works about 75% of the time...I can live with that till something better comes along.
I don't really understand why you cannot make text msgs received light the screen up like it does on an iphone. It was so convenient to just glance at the phone and see it was work texting yet again and mutter under my breath for them to piss off and then go back to playing Xbox without ever having to touch the phone.

Try Light flow for that... I think you can set a custom LED color and the screen to come on with certain notifications.
Yeah I've got Light Flow. You can set the LED colour and the screen to come on with some notifications. There is a 'lite' version which should cover the basics. But if you dont use the stock messenger or use things like Whatapp, you need the paid for version.
I use it and it has great customisation BUT at the moment I can't get it to work 100% of the time. So be warned!
It will be great though once they update it for 4.2.

For now I'm settling for half of the equation; screen off with a double tap. I'm using screen off and lock from Play.
I had PGM on my GN and it works very well, the developer is planning on getting an N4 the last I heard.
I'm currently looking into getting the phone to wake using the volume rocker -- I'm reading that it's inside android.policy.jar and removing two lines that ignore the volume rocker button presses.
Anyone want to give it a go? I'm going to look into it this weekend.

I emailed him too! That is one of the best app out there, in terms of the idea behind it. No real battery drain, but still be able to wake your device from sleep. I died a little after getting that email.
Kinda hope someone would do something like that for N4.
You can use Tasker+Secure Settings (pro version) to use the Google Now shortcut to unlock/lock the device, but there is no waking the device.
I too am waiting for pgm! That would be amazing

[Q] very slooow wake up!

I have SM-P605 (LTE version) running on BMJ9 (also tried few others before it) but the only thing I do seem to resolve and iritate me is the amount of time it takes to come whenever I pick it up. It is the same whether I use the home or the power button. I have switched off lock screen effect, I even switched off lock screen all together but the screen still wakes up sometimes after 2-4 seconds of pressing the button. Otherwise, it is not laggy in general.
Any ideas and wise words?
Cheers.

Thanks mate. Done that even disabled the svoice getting launched from the home button. THis behaviour is the same using TW or Apex.
This right here is why I returned it. No matter what I did, even using the Samsung Book Cover, nothing worked.
Drove me crazy til I finally had enough and exchanged it for the iPad Air.
If this issue gets fixed, I'd probably pick it up again.

I'm not a fan of iPad either but I got sick of opening the cover and always saying, "Ok, hold on a minute" when wanting to show it to someone.
You'd think this expensive spec beast would be able to wake up as fast as a dumb tablet with a third of its RAM. IPad is an instant wake.
Do you have power savings mode disabled?
Do you a micro SD card installed? If so, temporarily remove it and see if it makes a difference. Also, note the brand, model and speed class. And, did you format it in the device you're using?
Downgrading to a child's iPad with DRAM limitations and crashes is not an option for a lot of us.
it's a "feature" of the exynos processor. it puts itself into a deep sleep that has a slight delay when waking up. just about every exnyos4 and higher have the "feature".

Ummm...it's not limited to exynos processors my friend. It also happens on the snapdragon variants as well.
Just go in Developer Options and check box the option for "Force GPU Rendering". That did the trick for me so hopefully it'll work for you guys too.

After todays firmware update it starts up a lot faster. Now I think it's acceptable but Samsung can do better. Had the same issue on my "old" Note 2, but after a few firmware updates the problem disapered. I'm hopeful.

Crude Moto X "Always Listening" Feature Workaround

I really like the Moto X is the "always listening" feature.
I finally figured out how to implement such a feature on the Note 3, and thought I share.
Basically, while the screen is off, say "Hi, Galaxy". S-Voice will activate. S-Voice sucks. So, ask S-Voice to kindly "Open Google Search".
Once Google Search/Now is opened, you can use it fully. Just say "Okay, Google" before every command.
If you haven't done it already, you'll need to update to the latest Google Search/Now to be able to issue continuous "Okay, Google" commands.
Side note: there's Open Mic+ app (awesome app). However, it doesn't have always listening while screen is off yet. So, use S-Voice to wake up the phone from screen off.
Still trying to figure out a way to automatically jump straight into Google Now upon "Hi, Galaxy" command. Any idea?
If you use Tasker this is a very simple profile to implement. Just make a profile for whenever "s-voice" opens to auto open "voice search".
There is a small delay in between, but it's much more streamlined than saying "hi Galaxy" and then "Ok Google" after.
I'm fairly sure there are other automation apps out there that can do the same thing, maybe even free, but I use Tasker myself.
Hope that helps
Lol. Is there a way to do hi galaxy, ok google, how about you Jarvis?

Thanks this works quite well for me in particular in my car as s voice doesn't work well with my cars Bluetooth however google voice search does. So I have Tasker enable it when I'm connected to my cars Bluetooth. But I still prefer s voice when I'm not in my car so I have Tasker set up to go back to svoice when my phone disconnects from my car. Tasker is awesome.

I would like to resurrect this old thread and see if there has been any further development on this. I would like to have my phone automatically open google voice search with the "Hi Galaxy" command and I have tried some of these apps (not Tasker yet) but they have not worked consistently. Sometimes they work and sometimes not. And also sometimes I get a wakelock that drains my battery and if I greenify or disable wakelock for that app it doesn't work.
There has to be a way for a Dev to make it work like stock. Any ideas out there?
Should be an easy way with a rooted phone.

[Q] Turn off Google Now...

I'd like to get notifications on my watch, ie. text, incoming phone calls, voice mails, Pandora, etc. but the Google Now cards really get on my nerves. I don't want steps, time to work, stocks, etc. showing up on my watch when I don't need them. It partially blocks my watch-face. I would much rather just have my watch-face only be interrupted for notifications and not Google Now. I would like to be able to see steps, time to work etc. only if I ask for it by ie. swiping down, or up.
How can I turn Google Now off??? Can I hide the Google Now cards unless I swipe??? :cyclops:
Thanks! :good:

According to this article from Google (https://support.google.com/androidwear/answer/6056843?hl=en) you can already do exactly what you're looking for. All you need to do is turn off Google Now on your phone
Assuming that you like Google Now, then I don't think it's possible yet.
I did this exact thing. I turned off Google Now on my HTC One M8 and it stayed off my watch. Everything is still fully functional, i just dont get unwanted cards like steps, minutes to home, weather etc.
Im sure it saves a ton of battery too.
I don't really use Google now note I will also be turning it off. Hope it does save battery. So if we turn it off, since it doesn't count steps, that should turn the pedometer off?

lol make sure you have google now on your phone enabled. It should show cards by default
If you go into:
Google Now 'settings' > Customize > Everything Else > ...
You will see multiple cards that you can disable, for instance I don't need to see weather updates each time I wake the screen -- I live in southern California. Just choose "No" for anything weather related, etc.. This applies to many things without completely disabling Google Now.

The new task changer is so good. If you quickly switch between the 2 recent apps by quickly double tapping there's no lag whatsoever. Old version had a little hiccup!

Yea I liked it too but my muscle memory has gotten used to swiping left/right to clear recent apps and was constantly doing that instead of swipe up/down, so have reverted back
Think I'm stuck in my ways tbh, at least with Samsung, same reason I cannot think of anything I would like to use the Bixby button for, so it just sits there useless, maybe with a different manufacturer's phone I could change my habits

Use bxactions!! I use it and if you give it increased control just by following the instructions (involves plugging into computer). It's so good because I've programmed it to launch google assistance, pause music, flightlight etc.
This is the last versión 1.0.00.27?

Like I said, I can't think of anything I would want to use the Bixby button for, I don't need another button for anything
I know about bxactions, I tried it (buggy) but even still there was no action I wanted to map that button for
Maybe if I lived in a cave it would be handy for the flashlight...

It's pretty buggy if you don't give it full control or whatever its called. Involves plugging in computer and executing a file on phone. Cause otherwise it launches bixby for a split second and is pretty annoying. And for the flashlight, sure you don't need it all the time but it dos have its uses once in a while. The better features for me is pause music, skip song and importantly launch google assistant instead of bixby

Yea I executed that file with adb and the phone connected originally, I set it up via the instructions but it wanted to do something other than I told it to
The button is just in an awkward place for me, I press it whenever I pick up the phone, or press the power button, they've placed it in such a position that they get a load of stats saying it's being used 10x more than it really is due to accidental presses, similar to when Microsoft changed the X close button to OK Accept for upgrading to 10 and claimed it was a mistake
Above the volume up or above the power key would have been a better place, somewhere you only press it when you mean to
If I map it for flashlight or anything else I'm gonna get sick of constantly accidentally launching whatever I map it to
Maybe in 12 months when the novelty of a new phone has worn off I`ll start playing about with it but quite happy to have it do nothing atm
I never had the chance to try this on my S7, so it's a breath of fresh air on my S9. Trying everything now to see what I'll keep. So far the lockscreen options are nice indeed.

True, the button is very easy to press, i have a case so less of a issue for me. Yeah i would root my phone but the disadvantages that arise greatly outweigh the benefits
Good lock has been officially released for the US galaxy store
Will it be available in the EU too?

Hopefully it will be, it's a good app, best for custom without root, the other apps are good also, the newer edge lighting has more effects, and also a routine app, one handed mode + and edge touch which I not used yet.
Thanks for the links! After installing all the apps I found that I preferred the way Samsung gave me my device!
However I've still retained one hand operation +, edge lighting plus and quickstar. The rest of the apps didn't seem to attract me much.
Thanks again!
Cheers!

I really like it, bit more customisation is always a good thing.
I got the "Badlock" version here which doesn't need any other apps to be able to change settings etc. - https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/how-to/lock-lock-2018-8-0-devices-t3804657
