Should i buy it? or one plus 5? - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
Im looking for a new phone, i currently own a redmi note 3 pro, but i want a better phone overrall, i always loved mi mix, altough it was too expensive for me and a bit too big, plus the camera isnt that great..
Well, mi mix 2 was announced, kinda disappointed in some way, but i still like it, camera is good (could be better), dont care about no headphone jack, only thing that i would really like is the double camera, on the other hand, there is one plus 5, ~100€ less than mi mix 2 on gearbest, great phone overall, nice camera, but the design isnt as good as mi mix 2....
Well, im sure some of you guys have the mi mix 2, do you recommend it or should i go for one plus 5 or another phone?
Also i was looking now at the LG G6, looks cool too.

Well I couldn't resist and already bought the mi mix 2 on gearbest, but I made the mistake of buying the 64gb when the 128gb was only 10€ more, only saw it after, thanks for the feedback tho, got me more confident.
Hopefully we get some custom roms like lineage soon.
Does it come with tempered glass? If not where I can buy one

Definitely Mix2 is better than OP5

Well, I'm in the same place as were you, ShadyGame, but I'm more patient
MI Mix2 is beautifull for me, my only concern is about GPS accuracy (I know Mi5 had problems), so I wait for some owners opinions

I couldnt resist too and bought the device also on gearbest today. Im curious when it will arrive.
It will be my first xiaomi device so im also curious about MIUI and the rom development for the mix 2 ..
I hope it wasnt a wrong decision to buy mi mix for 520€ instead an Galaxy S8 for 520€ too ^^

I purchased one last week, have the Redmi Note 3 Special Ed. Was tossing up between this and the Oneplus5 as well.
Hope it arrives soon, any thoughts on staying with the ROM it comes with. Here in Australia if I root or unlock the phone my banking apps will not work.

i have a redmi note 3 pro, it was awesome, but i cracked the screen and i want something top line xD
galaxy 8 here costs like 800€ in my country, simply not an option when i can buy mi mix 2 for 530.

I own both currently. The OP5 is much lighter and the Oxygen OS is much more stock. The MIX2 just looks more modern with the bezeless design. Talking about weight again, the MIX2 almost makes my hands tired holding it for a long time compared to the OP5. The ceramic is absolutely beautiful, but don't know if its worth the weight since you cover it up with a case almost immediately. Performance wise, they are similar. Both are snappy and get stuff done. Camera wise, both aren't as good as the top flagships, but they do the job sufficiently.
OxygenOS is WAY better than MIUI. It was just easier to setup with launchers and the interface is just cleaner. I was having all kinds of trouble with notifications with MIUI, but I finally have it working right. Maybe things would be different with the global rom?? Who knows, but I can't wait for some alternate ROM to show up to clean things up. My final decision is going to be to stick with the MIX2. Reason being I can't stand the 4 year old design that Oneplus stole from apple.

I dont really care about the OS when im buying a new phone, i know i will be rooting it and installing a stock rom, hopefully we get lineage soon...untill then ill stick to MIUI is not that bad in my opinion.

What do you guys think how long will this device live?
I am still using a Oneplus One, which is pretty old by now - so I tend to settle on phones and only switch once something is broken or I'm really impressed. Development for Oneplus One ROMs / Kernels is still going on, because it was a highly anticipated phone and had many users. Is the Mi Mix 2 compared to the OPO a niche product?

It will live untill you break it xD, i mean, look at that screen, never gets old, with snapdragon 825 and 6 gigs of ram i think it will be a good phone for the years to come...the only thing i wish it was better is the camera, from what i've seen, still didnt receive mine, but i dont expect the quality of an iphone or s8, or even LG v30.

You should.
You must
my experience was so far so gooodd.. you really really should.
Sorry. I've just bought the 1+5
It was a very hard decision but the 1+5 just won as it was available to get my hands on the beast today.
I went for the 8gb ram / 128gb storage
Honestly, I have it and it's decent but I wouldn't buy it again. The hardware is solid but the software is meh at best and with Xiaomi being terrible with the source code, we don't even have an official LOS build. I am actually considering selling mine and going back to OnePlus ( will miss the size and quick charge for sure)

Lol, of course I saw that 10 minutes after I made my post. Better late than never
It was a close call for me too between the OP5 and the Mi 6. But 5.5" is too big for me, so I got the Mi 6 Ceramic (6 GB/128 GB) version. I'm still using my Nexus 5 because I'm in the "72 hours wait period to unlock the bootloader".
So far I'm very impressed with MIUI 8, though. All of the features I need from Lineage are there. I'm thinking of just rooting MIUI and if possible slimming it down a bit, but I might not go back to LOS.

Oneplus 3 -> Mi Mix 2

Hi guys. I'm a proud Oneplus 3 owner and I've been having this device since it's launch. Now I think it's time to upgrade. I always loved MIUI and now I also like the design of the MiMix 2. What the the opinions of an mix 2 user? Maybe someone upgraded from and op 3 as well. What do you think about the phone? Should I wait for mi mix 3?
I upgraded from a OP3. I was totally fed up with the poor battery life of the OP3 and Oneplus getting more shady by the day. Sold my OP3 and bought a Mix 2 at launch. I'm very happy with my Mix 2, the screen and design is beautiful, you will not be dissapointed.
I am running AndyYan's LineageOS and it's pretty bugfree and rock stable for me!

Lovely, someone to talk to. Do you miss the amoled screen from op3? Also, is there any reason why you're not using MIUI, or that's just personal preference? How would you compare these two devices? Thank you

Don't miss the amoled screen at all, I feel like the Mix 2's screen is a lot more natural and color accurate. Maybe you'll miss the blacks just a little bit. Personally I don't value oled that much. Both IPS LCD and Amoled have their pros and cons.
I have a love/hate relationship with MIUI. It has it's beauty but it also has it quirks. It's definitely one of the best Android mod's out there imo. The beauty of Xiaomi phones is that you have a choice, unlike with Samsungs. At the end of the day, I just love stock Android too much.
The Mix 2 will definitely feel like an upgrade over the OP3. Especially because of the beautiful ceramic design and the screen.

Imo the mix 2 is the best looking phone of 2017. I don't know why but I always loved the feel and look of MIUI, ever since I had my first android phone (Samsung galaxy mini) I always wanted to have a stage build.

Yeah same here, I have always been fond on MIUI's UI design too. Especially the look of the status bar icons are very good. But I just prefer stock Android because of it's simplicity and the stock notifications.

It is a beautiful phone for sure, but as ur a oneplus 3 user which was a great phone in itself, i would ask u to wait for a month and go ahead with mi7 with latest soc and sd835 is going to be last gen in 1 month time.
So if u ask me its better to wait.

in the great words of kurt angle , Oh its true its damn true.
I also jumped from op3 to the mix 2 and i'm happy. the snap 835 is a good upgrade, the ufs memory is blazing fast in backup/restore, the screen is amazing, bright and the 18/9 is a nice step forward. Battery life seems quite good too with almost two day span for me. Here is some things i can miss:
- Weight of the phone, this mix 2 is heavy and thick compared to the op3 (and even more with the op5 of my wife)
- Camera quality is far better in the op3 (and faaaaar better on the op5)
- Jack port (miss or not, was a good way to be gifted a good bt earphone )
- Custom Rom support (hope this will evolve the good way in the next months, as firmware & oreo are now available)

Should I?

I chose the Mi Mix 2 over the Huawei Mate 10 because of price, updates and looks and I've not regretted it. It's also one of the few phones without the stupid notch. I recommend that you buy it but don't get it from Lightinthebox. You're better off with Gearbest even if it's a few dollars more.

I love mine. I would debate on whether you should maybe wait for the Mi Mix 2S or not. We are finally at the point where the AOSP ROMs are pretty solid as an alternative to MIUI. So if using something like Resurrection Remix or Lineage OS is a strong desire, then the 2 is probably a better choice over the 2s.

My Mi Mix 2 is coming ^^
I got mine for a few days now and I cannot say anything else that I love it! Definitely it worths its price
I've got the note 8 before and except for the s-pen, I dont miss it. The mi mix has better size, a big screen in a more handly body and it has very nice design. The fingerprint sensor is waaaaaay better. Performing its as well, Samsung is still a little laggy sometimes, here there is no lag at all, everything run so fast... I cannot complain about anything not even for the camera which I readed its trash... its not for me, fulfills perfectly in most situations.
You made a very good purchase, enjoy it

It really depends on what you are looking for. But i love my phone.
I chose the Mi Mix 2 because of the high ratio of display (almost bezel less) and the possibility to use custom rom (but for the sake of argument... Unlocking the bootloader is F***ING ANNOYING).
At this time around, i join with the other users... wait for the official specs of the Mi Mix 2S, before you make a decision.

Maybe they changed the procedure, because i unlocked the BL of a Redmi 3 for a friend of mine. It was quite simple indeed.
But mine was not. I subcribed to the MIUI-Forum, needed a VPN-Client so connect to china and had to wait 72 Hours.

Wtf...
There is some Telegram or WhatsApp group about Mi Mix 2?
Sad story, yesterday I broke my s4 glass, I accidentally dropped it, not once, but twice. First time it strenuously survived, but the second time unavoidably it broke.
So, after half a day of mourning I then didn't look around but went straight reading about mi mix2. And you know what?
It happened that today was the Mi Mix 2S presentation date. :crying:
So now I'm torn. Wait for a while for the 2S or don't look ahead but buy the mix2.
My main concern is about the mi mix 2 OS, it will be global already or will I have to update the software all by myself (or better, thanks to XDA? )

Why would you cry mate? It brings advantages on both ways. Either you pick Mi Mix 2, of which price is already dropping slowly, or you decide to get 2S which will (surprisingly, to be fair) launch with the same price as its predecessors (3299 CNY/ 32999 INR / 530 $) and will sport some important improvements (wireless charging, massive camera upgrade, AI, newer SoC, upgraded curved body). It's up to you what you choose. If you care about the camera at least a little bit, you shoule be aware of the fact that Mix 2's camera is really bad (and I'm generous).
Additionally, Mix 2S supports Project Treble which will drastically facilitate the creation of custom ROMs. So I think the amazing local developers will surely look after this device.

i know, the issue is that I have to change it now. So I doubt Mi Mix 2s will go on the market fast enough. And on the other front if Mix 2's camera is really THAT bad I will have to pass.
I'll have to find another option. Counting also that 6" are too big for me. In the beginning I was waiting for the mi7 but this accident changed my plans.

I understand your situation... Don't you have any spare phone you could use in the meantime? Mi Mix 2S reportedly launches on the 3rd of Apríl (for the rest of world; in China it might have launched already).
Keep in mind that this 6" phone, thanks to almost no bezels, won't increase the size any drastically. My guess (I don't have time to look it up, I apologize) is 1cm for height and basically nothing for width.
Also be aware that Mi line, which you were waiting for, doesn't support many LTE bands. So if you live in Europe, that's a big problem.
For the 2's camera - look up the test on the internet... it's quite average and considering the price it's bad. That's the reason why Xiaomi is releasing a semi-generation phone, mainly improving the camera quality

I googled yesterday to find out any dates (I followed part of the presentation where I only got the prices) but didn't have any luck. Sure if the date is around the April, I can wait. The S4 still works it's the glass that is quite broken. Sorry if I ask again, so the rom won't be localized, given it's just an update it won't mount Mi Mix2 rom?

Feel free to ask anything, that's why this forum exists
I answered you incompletely, confused you - Mix 2S will surely have community support thanks to Project Treble, but it will, of course, come with localized ROM out of box. In their presentation they mentioned a personal assistent - whatever its name was - which they (surprisingly, haha) compared to Siri. Then in the slides they had a line saying for China only, which indicates there will be a global edition not including this feature. So just in case you needed a proof, this probably is one
Btw I'm the same case as you - working on original Sony Xperia Z (2013) with broken screen. However a little more than a half is touch accessible so I'm still surviving and slowly searching for a new phone

Would you ever buy a oneplus device again?

I don't know about you but my answer is NO. This thing did not live up to my expectations at all. The specs read like they are all premium but the device is low quality at best. Using the device is an actual nightmare. The camera is a blurry mess, the GPS never locks, the file system is crap and freezes up when you try to load things. I bought into the gimmick and I lost... Anybody want to buy this piece of junk for a low price so I can buy an iphone and just have something that works?
OH... the bluetooth constantly bugs out... another thing that annoys me every single day.
I like the phone just don't love it. My Pixel 2 XL still feels better when I pick it up. What chaps my hide is when my photos disappear or when my phone app just disappears when I'm talking to someone.
The 7T is just perfect. But I won't buy newer phones if they have display a la "Samsung Edge". I hate the curved one.
I found the 5T to be super premium build quality. It's amazing. The Pixel 2 XL I bought at the same time was absolute junk. It had a noticeably poorer build quality and a really bad OLED screen.
I am getting a 7T Friday and will see if they maintained the great build quality (although I had an 8 Pro I returned for a week and it had excellent build quality like my 5T). I can't see where the OP is coming from regarding it not feeling premium? Is it just an OS perspective? I only ran OOS on my 5T for a couple weeks before switching exclusively to AOSP.
Sorry but this is nonsense! your argument is vague and silly. what is "low quality"? I still have my oneplus one, the oneplus 3t, oneplus 5t, all working good and now a 7t, which looks great and is great....
Absolutely yes! I find my 7T is perfect and worthy for the price paid. I don't have any issues or hardware errors.

I don't know actually. I find the OnePlus phones to be still very good, but I'm kinda disappointed on how the team is struggling to keep them updated since they began to release lot of phones every year.
Plus, I like the improvements they made with the camera on the new OP8 Pro, but I want a phone that is totally comparable to iPhones/Galaxy phone in that area if I have to spend 900+ euros.
The 7T is literally perfect.
This is my first OP phone and I'd say - yes. I hope there'll be new OP phone without curved display.
If they release reasonably priced phones with flat screens. The price for the 8-series is too much considering it's a tencent phone.

I would gladly pay $1000 for a flat screened 8 Pro. But it doesn't exist and the S20+, even ignoring the terrible OS skin, is $1350 from Samsung unlocked. That is just too much for basically the same phone and a crippled software experience. And the S20+ has a curved screen as well! Although not as bad as the 8/8 Pro.
I have been with OP for the last 3 months, 7T is my first OP. Feel happier than with the other chinese brand X (4 years with them).
I recommend the OP, but please no pop up camera and curve edge.
I have to agree with the OP.
I'm having the exact same issues they are. Since most are software related I was hoping updates and custom ROMs could fix,a real shame there isn't any development for this device
For me 7T is almost perfect. I love it. If only battery and average stock camera indoor pic were better. I love to tinker my phone so with gcam , camera issues are solved ?. Since I don't game , so battery is enough for me to last full day with 20% left. YMMV.
I went from OP2 to HTC U11 to OP7T. Have no regrets. Will purchase OP9T if there are no better alternative. I change my phone every 2 years.

Have you even looked in this forum for custom roms and kernels?

Yes, there are as far as I know just 2 ROMs out there... Neither work with MMS on Verizon.
If you have another recommendation would love to hear it- for me just looking for stability and speed.
Thanks for everyone on this forum helping make the device great!
Yep, had three... OnePlus One, 6T, 7T (bought the 7T when the price went down, sold the 6T).
I don't buy them when they first are released. I wait until a new one is about to be released, then pick up the previous years model
typically at a reduced price.

There are three ROMS available right now. I would recommend Omni for speed and stability, but not sure about your specific use-case.
IDK, no matter what setting I pick, the ringtone for google messages does not work and the do not auto update option in playstore does not work. This is only an issue on the 7T.

Question Would you buy again?

Hi all.
I'm thinking of getting a 9 pro and was wondering, would you buy it again if you had your current experience to help make your decision? I've found a few around $650, used. I'm not worried about insane camera quality. A good screen, solid performance, fast charging and being able to root and ROM it are what is drawing me in. I loved the 7 Pro I had but I've seen some say they don't think anything later has lived up to that and the quality has degraded. It nearly pushed me back to a 7 pro but I take it with a grain of salt, figured I'd ask here and see from some current users.
As for ROM's, /e/ apparently works. And Lineage. Does the color OS merge cause any new privacy concerns? I don't know a lot of how it has progressed, to be honest. I'm planning to ROM and de-google as much as I can.
Anyone who's used a PIxel 5a, might it be a better solution, cheaper?
Thanks for your input!
Honestly if I could go back, I wouldve bought a Galaxy s21 ultra. Android 12 is still so buggy for me and I'm not keen on OnePlus merging with oppo. I love OOS.
Maybe,. It still has been solid, like screen is beautiful, w/ refresh rate. It has the thirty minute 0-100 charge and forty minute wireless charge. It sounds good and looks good so maybe so.
One thing is the fast charging is 65 watts; which I liked the 35 watt on the 8 pro.
One of the drawbacks was the US unlocked version came with one sim slot, instead of two, like it should of been.
Also when the few updates were good , unlocked version usually only received the incremental version on Google server; but the last one, I just flashed in TWRP (which has been a beauty).
So all in all still a solid device with the microg and Gapps option.
If the Samsung can be unlocked, etc, and looking like it will be supported then maybe that might be the way. I've been looking at them the last few years and I really like that foldable phone that opens to a tablet.
The last one I personally owned was the S3 and that was the days. I remember it coming out and being like, "WOW". That was the CyanogenMod era for me on that S3.
Anyway I hope it works out in what you decide. One thing I think by the way is "how easy is it to recover, and which method? How easy to brick, etc?
Take care, and I hope this post is not too much, but I can relate (like I'm sure most of us here on XDA can), and thought I'd add my thoughts.

no
Yes. I would buy 9 Pro.
One of the best screen on the market. Hardware, same. Charging on Oneplus is awesome. When i buy my phone battery was 0. I charged with my phone Off in 27 minutes, 0-100 %. Than i buy wireless 50w, crazy fast too. I put my phone on the stand . Then i must have my eyes on the watch. It goes to 100% in no time, if i let it.
About ColorOS... Many people forget that Oppo Fiind 7 came out at the same time with OnePlus One (almost same phone). Oppo works on is own processor. Oppo made a foldable already.
Color OS works fine (on my European model phone). I'm glad that we don't have that Stupid cartoon that i see on Pixel 6 phones. Looks llike is made by a 3 years old kid.
Oxygen OS was Awesome, but unfortunately google f*cked up this great OS.
Camera on Oneplus 9 pro is good. I like xPan mode, especially.

exactly how I feel too.
Yes I would, I'd make sure I know the origin of the phone, I.e. Eu, USA TMobile, India, China. I would then find out which rom it has flashed. Then use these to compare which country you're using it in, to make sure there's no surprise. Also I'd stick with a11 or a12 on a rom you like. My spec's are in the screenshot and I'm in the UK.
I would buy the 9 Pro again, but I'm going to try the 10 Pro when Global model available!
Cheers
I would probably buy unlocked, but I would buy again. I would also have done a little more looking so I didn't end up with my phone stuck on India firmware now.
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback. Still undecided for now.
Another question; would you go to/back to a 7t Pro McLaren? Looks like it's about a $250 difference. I loved my 7 Pro and I'm willing to do a battery change. Or is the 9 Pro just so ahead that it's worth it to you?
Oh, and for those who wouldn't buy a 9 pro, would you mind to elaborate a little more? I'm down to these two and am trying to decide which makes more sense if I'm going to ROM it anyway.
Thanks again everyone!
650 usd for a op 9 pro? I'll take it. IMO no phones are better in this price range. It's not the best phone but it is expected that it will perform the same if not better with those $1000+ flagship phones.

7 pro was great ! Mine was blue. NO front camera in display ! Back then Oxygen OS was awesome. And everything was easy : root-unroot-twrp-MSM.
But the screen is Too Curved. And soon you will get no updates.

Don't ! Wait a little more. I'm sure you can use/keep your 9 pro few moths more.
I wait for Ultra.

Latest OOS (buggy Android 12 ColorOS ) is really not for me.

Alright, I'll try and wait for the Ultra
I've owned my 9 Pro for about 4 months now. I have very mixed feelings about it.
For me, the pluses:
Unlockable bootloader with good third-party ROM support.
Nice screen, decent camera.
Wireless charging
The minuses:
Buggy factory ROM's. The switchover to Android 12 and a ColorOS-based build was a disaster. ColorOS is just not in the same league as OxygenOS as far as polish or capabilities. It lost most of the nice touches that made OxygenOS good. And the new team is doing a mediocre job of staying on top of security patches. It is now the end of February, and my phone is still at January 1, 2022 security patch level.
No SD-card slot.
I think I'd still pick the OnePlus over a Google phone. Google has had extensive hardware issues, and their customer service is supremely awful.
And I'd pick it over Samsung. Samsung is actively hostile toward unlocked bootloaders and custom ROM's. They also have a lengthy history of battery problems - the Galaxy Note 8 was not an aberration, merely the most severe.
Motorola/Lenovo makes decent hardware, but are completely falling down on updates. My wife's One Action is only 15 months old, and is still running Android 10 at a Nov 1, 2021 patch level. Supposedly the premise of the whole "Android One" program was that it would make it easier for the OEM's to issue timely updates and upgrades. Doesn't seem to be working.
To sum it up: The OnePlus is not great, but in the US market, it's still slightly better than the alternatives.
I bought a 256gb/12gb in mint condition for $550 USD that should be here tomorrow. I almost gave up on the idea but then saw the price and figured I'd give it a shot.
I looked forward to trying it out! Now to decide which ROM. LOS, Derp, Nameless or Stag. It's a fun problem I've missed having.
Thanks for all of the input, it helped a lot actually.
Yes. definitely. I just sold 8T model and bought 9 Pro for a good price. I will stick with Android 11 as long as I can, because IMHO A12 is childish and awful looking (especially these big fonts).

yes, i bought the same way, for similar price, it's worth it. you save money and there are no performance differences or use signs.
just make sure the seller is reputable and you will be fine, for me warranties failed me more than resellers. pro phones usually cost too much and aren't worth the cash unless you find sucha discount from resellers, which phones are rarely used and justa s good as factory. i always choose a physical seller so if there was an issue, have them located, AliExpress is not trustworthy.
about the phone, its very good. the main problem is the default ROM which isnt good at all. on the ohter hand, its easier to flash a custom ROM on OnePlus than almost any brand out there, and this will fix all your bugs, double battery time, half internet data consumption, refresh rate and overall performance. totally recommended
EDIT: i see you bought it for just 550$, which is even better. at that price is definitely even more worth it.
