Message+ Doesn't Use Contact-specific Sound - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

I like to use specific sounds for different contacts, both for Ringtones, and for Texts. On my Note 3, this worked fine.
I've discovered with my new Note 8 that even though I successfully assign the appropriate sound to a given contact's profile, when I receive a text from that person, it uses the general text sound, rather than the one for that contact.
I then started using the Samsung Messenger App, and it used the correct sound when a text is received for a given contact.
Ironic that Verizon's own texting app doesn't work properly on Verizon's Note 8 configuration.
I've had other problems with Message + anyway: sometimes the texts are not shown in chronological order, other times a given text doesn't even show up, things don't sync properly between devices, etc. So no big loss, but I'll either use Samsung's, or look for a different Messenger app.

With messages+ you can change individual notifications under the customize function in each conversation.

Yes, you are exactly right! I forgot about that.
That does work, which is great. I did find, however, that for whatever reason, Message+ doesn't activate edge lighting when a text comes on, whereas the Samsung one does. Not a big deal, but it's a neat effect that I like to have.
So I'll stick with the Samsung Messaging App, but good to know how to accomplish this in Verizon's Message+.

Plus Bixby plays nice with native Sammy messaging app. Pretty cool integration!!

Yeah I thought for sure Verizon would fix that. I really like their app.

My usual app doesn't allow voice replies to text messages so trying to find a new one. Textra seems very nice but I'm not getting the vibrate, pop up on my watch. I get the notification if i scroll down to it but nothing pops up. Any suggestions?

hangouts:good:
Thanks for the info. Yeah hangouts works well, but it lacks a lot of features. I found Textra. Works great, looks great, has all the usual features I love like replying through the status bar, but most of all it allows voice replying with my watch!
I tried out Textra and liked everything about it except how it pulled my favorites from my contact list and put them in the quick contacts. I couldn't find a way to remove some of the quick contacts without removing a Favorite from my contacts... so that extra space taken up at the top of the screen...plus my keyboard popping up at the bottom made the view window for typing a message very small and hard to use.
I found chompSMS (which is put out by the same developer as Textra), and it's exactly what I was looking for. It allows the option to reply on the Android Wear device with a Reply button (like Textra)... and it's running great with no problems. If you haven't settled on a SMS replacement app yet, you might want to check out chompSMS.
Been using Google Messenger to reply for voice texts, and Wear Messenger to reply via text on the watch. You need to have Minuum installed though, works pretty well for replying with a keyboard.

I actually received an email from Minuum about their version 3.0. Although I see it can only be installed via adb which I'm not to knowledgeable about. But how does it work? Are there only certain apps that allow you to respond to texts? How do you pull up the keyboard cause usually when you hit reply, it just does voice input.
Also to add, I found an app called Coffee. Allows you to respond to sms with voice, and a bunch of premade texts and you can also add to it. Also it appears to just pull the notification from your phone so even if your app doesn't support android wear, you can still reply via voice with this app. Will be testing more though.

Yea, you have to install through adb and set it as default through adb. I can find you the steps if you'd like. Also, the only text messenger app that allows keyboard reply is Wear Messenger. But I'm going to try to take apart google messenger apk and try to see what I can do to the wear side.
EDIT: For those that aren't very good with adb, here's the steps to install minuum: http://support.minuum.com/knowledgebase/articles/394385-minuum-on-android-wear
I'm also using Coffee, but I keep getting the "Let's get started" card where it says to flick your wrist to send a message. This functionality doesn't work for me, even though the option is ticked on the phone app. No idea why that won't work, and haven't had a reply from the developer yet.

I actually emailed the Dev about constantly getting that notification. No reply yet.
Other than that, the app is working great. I did untick that feature as I don't need it but I think when I first downloaded the app, it didn't work for me either.

The problem I have is that I need to use TMO WiFi calling at my house. I have zero signal there. And unless I'm using the stock app for messaging I can't receive or send MMS or group messages. So none of the 3rd party apps for SMS work for me. The irritating thing is that the manual for the watch says it has the reply option. (it wont let me post the link here)
So unless there is a work around for 3rd party SMS I'm SOL. So far Sony has not responded to my request for a fix.

Verizons messaging replacements

I cannot find a decent messaging app that works. Messaging+ is hokey at best and crashes often. Ive tried HelloSMS and EvolveSMS but they dont work with Verizon MMS messages. Also having a problem with lowered DPI and the pictures are zoomed in. I have to download them and view in Gallery.
I love the layout of Evolve and Hello, but sucks they dont work. Evolve has MMS settings but not sure if that will fix anything.
Solutions? Alternatives?
Whats wrong worth the Messenging app that comes on the phone. I've tried a bunch and have ended up back to this

Ever since updating to Verizons Message+, my stock Messaging app is gone. It is not hidden or disabled, and I can search for it and it finds it but says it cannot start.
I disabled the Message+ (can't uninstall it now) but nothing changes.
I also do not care for the layout and the way it functions.
My G4 is stock and on 11A, and I have the Messaging app set as Default. In fact, I have Message+ (Verizon) Disabled and SMS/MMS works fine.
It in the LG Box (folder) of apps, took me a while to find it

I am using Action Launcher. It is not listed in the Apps, but I can search for it, but like I said earlier, it still doesnt launch.
Regardless I do not like the stock app. I am looking for good replacements and alternatives.
Evolve works great on my G4, mms included. I use Textra mainly and haven't had any issues with it either. I'm not currently using evolve but I remember having to adjust the mms file size. I used the option below no limit. I think 1 or 2MB?
1mb is right above "no limit".
Yea I get MMS messages from my GF, but other times I get notification alerts... but open the SMS app and nothing is there. Then I switch to Messaging+ and it'll display a MMS message.
Maybe the default 500kb setting was too low and now allowing it to come in to the Evolve App. We'll see.
I really wish "Hello SMS" would have MMS settings because that is my favorite SMS app. Visually appealing and stupid simple. It is unlike any other SMS app I can find.
Textra. ALL DAY.

Pixel XL Group Message/MMS issues

Day 2 of life with Pixel XL, and so far im honestly loving it. Coming from an S7 Edge (which shouldnt feel like a huge jump) definitely feels like a huge jump. Anywho, im having issues receiving group texts from what i suspect samsung phones (1 of the persons i cant receive from 100% has a samsung) I can text and send pics back and forth with that person sms no problem, but when we get in our group text and start responding it comes to me in his personal text thread as "Couldn't Download Tap to Download" i KNOW ive had this issue before with nexus phones, i wanna say my 6P did this and i switched to hangouts (back then) and it fixed it, however now switching to hangouts makes a mess out of my text messages ( i guess they seperated the two apps completely). Im on AT&T if that makes a difference, google store purchased.
Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone have any ideas?

AT&T Nextgen is the APN you want. I run into this from time to time on my Nexus 6P on AT&T. It can be the size of the message (number of photos or too high of a resolution) someone is trying to send you or the source. I had a problem a few weeks ago with a video clip from Facebook (which I don't have), it would not "download."
I've had the same problem. It seems to only happen coming from my wife's Note 5 on ATT. I also had the same problem on my Moto X Pure. Can't say for sure if I remember having the problem using Hangouts, but definitely do using Google Messenger. I'm like you, I believe it may just be a Samsung problem because I can't remember it ever happening with anyone else I know.
I had the same issue with a group text with two other people. Once of them is using an S7 (I am on ATT and that friend is on ATT as well) and i could not receive any of his messages with the same "touch to download" error.
It seems to have fixed itself yesterday somehow and his messages started to come in.
Glad I'm not the only one. I came from an s7 edge. Can't get certain mms from my work group message, some have iPhone some have Android. ATT doesn't have a clue, google doesn't have a clue, I don't have a clue.....really no one has a clue. I did a hard reset, deleted the other APNs, put my sim card in my old phone and back in, tried a new sim card, 3 different SMS apps. It's almost as frustrating as Google's 100 pointless SMS apps but not quite that bad.
Yeah i randomly have them come in and then randomly stop working. It's frustrating definitely. Hopefully someone smarter than me comes around and tells us what's going on and how to correct?

And it just stopped working again. I noticed this is only happening when I'm using the Pixel and the other person is using a Samsung S7, on AT&T, in a group chat and is sending regular text (i.e. not an image). If that person sends an image to the group, I get it on my end. If that person is sending me a direct text message or a direct image, I can get. This only happens when he sends a text to the group.
I have another group where one of the users is using an S7 but not on AT&T and I can get his messages in the group text.
If I put my SIM in another android phone, everything is working even in the group text. This has to something to do with either the S7 on AT&T or the Pixel.
Very odd.
Interesting. Pixel 5 on at&t and I have issues with txting as well. Sometimes they just stop altogether until one triggers my txt some how and I get a few in a row. I was using chomp but I don't think that's the issue. My moto x pure on at&f was fine. Must be something with the pixel on at&t. Group MMS also takes a while to get to me. Sometimes I get them an hour after the fact. Same three ppl on my moto x pure last year with no issues.
Anyone figure anything out? Was hoping the new messenger update would have solved it but nope. Still doing it

Solution: This seems to be happening when both sides are using the same carrier and one side has a stock android and the other has a carrier branded Samsung phone with "advanced messaging" enabled and all parties are in a group chat.
Ask the Samsung user to disable the advanced messaging feature under: Messages > MORE > Settings > Advanced Messaging and you should be able to receive group text messages from this person on your pixel.
Seems like something half baked with the carrier or Samsung advanced messaging setup.
I just tested this with my friend and it started to work.

My friend has galaxy s6 and in group texts I can not see what she puts. Only a tap to download.
Turns out deleting the APN doesn't fix it. I think it has something to do with the advanced messaging that the Samsung phones use. Ask your friend to turn off advanced messaging and see if that helps.

I'm also having the same issue. I have a pixel xl and my friend is using a Galaxy S7 . When we are in a group text together I do not get any of his messages (unless it is an image). I had him download Textra and this fixed the issue, but he doesn't like textra so we are back to square one. I'm going to have him try disabling the "Advanced Text Messaging" in his messaging app to see if this works. This is a very annoying issue.

SMS settings missing in Verizon S8+

I originally ordered and used the S8+ on T-Mobile. I wasn't happy with the service, returned the device after using it for a week and a half and went back to Verizon and i'm noticing differences between the 2 different carrier phone model (which i expected to see).
The S8+ on T-Mobile allowed me send SMS messages (using the native Samsung Message app) that were as long as i wanted and they did not get broken up. On my new Verizon S8+ all incoming and outgoing messages are cut up and sent individually. On the T-Mobile version, there were settings in the Message app to change the different SMS settings and coding and that are missing on the Verizon model. I even enabled and used the terrible Verizon Messages app to see if i could make changes there, but there were no options there either.
Does anyone know how this can be fixed, or better yet, if it CAN be fixed? It's kind of frustrating. And Google provided no help except threads like this that were started and never completed with an answer.

That sucks. I know that SMS and MMS can be tricky. May have something to do with carriers. I have had to mess around with using different ones in different situations. I was using Chomp for a while with good results, but had to swap to Textra which has been doing well for me for my last 2 phones. Using Verizon on Verizon.

I am not having that issue. When someone send me a long message, it actually turn into an mms and I'm seeing it as 1 long message.
I also don't like the Verizon app, I want to use the native app. My native app works but the latest update wakes the screen on incoming SMS every single time no way to shut off. Very annoying, stuck using Verizon app for now as well. Have posted a thread here about that https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/help/screen-wake-incoming-sms-verizon-s8-t3594258 Also have opened a ticket with Samsung about that issued and Verizon community. Will see if it gets fixed with OTA patch. I have seen this before on beta builds on S7 edge, very annoying.
Also noticed they locked out the engineering menu, I mean come on Verizon. While I like the network way way way better than Sprint, this thing is locked and locked again.
I have been using the Android Messages app for a couple months now on my HTC M9. Just got this S8+ about a week ago. Hate the Samsung messages app. No individualized options for each person. The Verizon SMS app... well, it's the Verizon app, enough said. I have really liked the Android Messages on this now. No problems with sending short or long texts, or sending media. Seems to work the best out of all i've seen with the most options or features.

Those options only work in the Verizon messaging app, it may only be limited to others also using the Verizon messaging app to message you, maybe someone can test it to verify. But I can indeed verify typing notifications and read receipts do working in the Verizon messaging app.

AT&T does as well, but it's limited to within the carrier. Same for T-Mobile. And Verizon has it in their Messages+ app (which sucks).

A Couple questions- notifications and Sounds

After owning the P2 XL for a few days I have a some questions-
Are there any more sounds you can get besides the defaults sounds? The list choices seem short compared to others.
When I had my Note 5, you could have a separate notification sound for calls, texts and emails. It seems that there are only 2 sound selections for the XL. Is there a way to get all 3?
I'm on a Verizon phone and have been using their Messages+. Is there an opinion out there for the default Google messages app vs. Messages +?
I know that Messages plus works on wifi ,like Whats App, but not sure about Google Messages.
Thanks

Are you coming from an iPhone?
You can set different notification sounds for almost any app, though not all. For the main three - ringtone, all other notifications and then emails just go into the Sound settings. For other apps go into the app settings individually or go into the menu under settings called Apps & Notifications. You'll see your most recent apps and you can choose to see all your apps, and change the notifications for each one from there.
You can set any texting app to be your default app usually by just scrolling to it in the app drawer, opening it up and it will ask you if you want to set it to default. Alternatively go into the menu under settings for Apps & Notifications and under Advanced you'll see default apps for the main players there - Browser, Phone, Texting, Email, etc...
Messages and other major texting apps like Textra, Handcent & Pulse will not work on just Wifi as they relay only on SMS to get through. AFAIK.

add the sounds you want to use to the Notifications folder on your device. once there you can set them as defaults, and use them for just about any app.
you can use an app like zedge to get/install them if you like also.
Most apps have a setting for the sound they use now (notification channels) so you set them individually, as opposed to system wide.
There are many messaging apps that work over wifi as well, if thats what you are looking for. Google Messages app will only work on wifi if your provider is project Fi, otherwise it is just an SMS client.

add the sounds you want to use to the Notifications folder on your device. once there you can set them as defaults, and use them for just about any app.
