HTC 10 cannot enter recovery mode; this build is for development purposes only - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hello there,
After unlocking my bootloader, flashed a new recovery twrp I tried to enter the recovery mode. It keeps showing a red message saying "This build is for development purposes only" and after a while reboots to bootloader menu without allowing me to enter recovery mode. Any guesses?
Thank you in advance!

Which recovery version did you flash? And what did you do to enter recovery mode?

Hello,
It's the twrp-3.0.2-2-pme.
When phone is off, I push the volume down and the power button to enter to download mode, after that boot to bootloader and to recovery. That is when an HTC logo appears with this strange red message and after a while it reboots to bootloader mode.

Does download mode show that it is Unlocked for sure?
You may need to do the RUU for your exact model to get things right again.

This phone is new to you I assume since you stated that you've just unlocked the bootloader, but your CID is changed to SuperCID and that wouldn't be done without some previous modifications?
You have a Sprint device (according to your MID), so SuperCID is useless. You can only use Sprint firmware on a Sprint model.
What does it say next to "OS" in download mode? It should be x.xx.651.x
I would suggest you run the newest Sprint RUU. The RUU will wipe your phone, but since it's new to you that shouldn't matter. Plus unlocking the bootloader already wiped it.
Click on this link.
Scroll down to the "Manual System Update Instructions" and read them. The RUU download is at the end of the instruction.
After you've run the RUU, flash TWRP 3.1.1-0 again and it should work.
EDIT: I forgot to mention the red warning "This build is for development purposes only". That is nothing to worry about. You get it after you unlock the bootloader

Yes it does.
I'll try to put the stock RUU again and flash directly the twrp, without unlocking the bootloader.

Thank you very much for your time,
So, if I get it right, I put the stock RUU again and without unlocking the bootloader (as I previously did), I will flash directly the twrp. Right?

Once unlocked, the bootloader remains unlocked forever or until you give Android tools command to relock.
Running the Sprint RUU will most likely fixxxx it...
And yes, after you have it running right, boot to download mode and flash the newer TWRP that someone here recommended.
Then root with SuperSU or Magisk v14 and above, or install a custom rom from great choices here.

No. Leave the bootloader unlocked. You don't need to relock it, and it should remain unlocked after the RUU has run.
You can't flash TWRP with a locked bootloader

No need to be sorry.
Don't bother flashing TWRP first. When you run the RUU it will install the stock recovery and TWRP will get overwritten.
Run the RUU, then install TWRP after.

I put the stock SPRINT RUU, flashed the TWRP, wiped data, adb pushed the supersu.zip file into the phone and flashed it. After the flash was successful I reboot the system but it isn't setting. After the HTC logo on the starup it reboots automatically to bootloader.. :$

Hey,
I have already solved this problem, but thank you very much!
Now I have another one:
I put the stock SPRINT RUU (because my cell phone is a sprint unlocked), flashed the TWRP, wiped data, adb pushed the supersu.zip file into the phone and flashed it. After the flash was successful I reboot the system but it isn't setting. After the HTC logo on the starup it reboots automatically on bootloader.. :$

[Q] Stuck in bootloader mode. No wifi. Adb can't find devices

Okay so, I had a problem of having no OS and had my htc m8 on soft brick for a while but i finally got that resolved by flashing a new rom on it. ( Here it is if you want to read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/os-installed-transfer-files-t3018626)
Unfortunately, I wasn't getting wifi on it. I tried 2 other roms and still no dice. I read online that i needed to update my firmware to do that. To do that, I needed to relock my bootloader so I did and the firmware flashed successfully.
Now my hboot is 3.19 instead of 3.16 and my bootloader says RELOCKED.However, when i go into recovery mode, my phone shows a picture of the dead android. I can't get past the bootscreen either so my phone is stuck on bootloader mode.
I found this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2497712 to help me get my phone unlocked again cause the unlock code at htc dev wont work again.
However, when i write adb devices, no serial number shows up now. adb shell says no devices connected.
I tried pushing and flashing a new recovery and rom in cmd and it said it failed.
I'm really grasping at straws at this moment since I can't really do anything.
Are you sure you are updated? In the bootloader, what does it say for "os"?
And what roms are you trying to flash? 4.4.4 or Lollipop?
And to unlock bootloader, start over at HTC Dev. See what happens. Instead of trying old code.
You can't flash a recovery with a locked bootloader.
I'm pretty sure it updated because everything looks different. Bootloader's background is black instead of white now too. When I flashed the firmware, everything seemed to be okay as well. . .
my OS says 3.11.1700.5
and i tried it at dev and generated a code, but it gave me an error and didn't give me a file. I tried to use my old file but that didnt work.
Personally, in your situation now..... I'd flash the correct RUU for your device, then use Sunshine to s-off. Then you'll be bootloader unlocked also and can flash recovery, root and all that.
You'll need the same Android version RUU that matches your firmware now.
See this thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
Without Sunshine... I can't say why HTC Dev isn't helping.

Have you tried flashing a recovery using Hasoon2000 HTC one all in one ?. I had the same problem as you i flashed TWRP then I installed android revolution Hd Rom and it solved my problem but as I said try it may not work as your boot loader is locked..... You can also use the all in one too unlock boot loader might be worth a try

Like I said, recoveries wont flash cause its stuck on Relocked mode. I cant fix that because adb devices wont see my phone.
All the other commands on the All-in-One root kit gives me this:" 'C:\Users\Admin' is not an internal or external command, operable program or batch file " regardless of where i do it. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong here.
I tried to put the 0p6bimg.zip file but it wont copy on to my sd card cause of some error saying not responding or disconnected.
I tried flashing it instead but it said the file was too large
I tried the latest firmware but it said Failed! verification error.
I tried using the RUU to update and it stopped on the 1/7 process saying Error 155: Unknown Error.
I think what i need to do and how to fix it but I just need adb devices to find my phone.
If i can do that I can unlock my bootloader, install a recovery, install a rom and be home free but I can't do that until it detects my phone. I've tried everything now including reinstalling my drivers three times now.
Please help :'(
You don't need adb devices to see the device. You need to put the phone in the bootloader and type fastboot devices.
Open the command prompt inside the folder where also the fastboot.exe file is located.

No, you guys. I already said this. I already used the htc dev the first time to get my phone unlocked. I had to relock it to flash a firmware. Now I can't unlock it again. The token isn't working. I already used the token once and its not working for the second time. I need adb devices to use adb shell. That way I can adb push revone and unlock my bootloader, but im not sure if that would work either.
Edit: I tried htc dev by generating a code 3 times. It generated different ones, the last one worked.
Ok something is still wrong.
I flashed cwm 6.0.4.8, did a full wipe, installed supersu and installed the android revolution rom. When I reboot, it says I am not rooted, root now? I pressed yes and it reboot.
The phone goes into htc bootscreen for 2 minutes, reboots again and then goes into recovery mode. What do I do now?

Try flashing the boot.img again.
Clear the Cache.
If it still doesn't work then it might be best to just flash the ROM again.
Is your bootloader still show GPE version no. ?
If yes, how do you expect to flash a Sense ROM on GPE partition ?

HTC Desire 816 Dual SIM, only boots into Fastboot!

My HTC Desire 816 Dual SIM,
1. does not boot normally,
2. only boots into FASTBOOT page,
3. in FASTBOOT page I can select and enter Hboot page,
4. in Hboot menu, when I select RECOVERY, or FACTORY RESET, it returns only to FASTBOOT page.
5. as the attachment shows, there is nothing written in front of "OS-"; it is blank.
Questions:
1. In these conditions, is it possible to flash the ZIP ROM from sdcard via Hboot?
2. Is it not necessary to flash stock recovery, wipe some partitions, etc first, and only then proceed to flashing ZIP ROM from sdcard via Hboot?

It should be but you will need to have the stock recovery reinstalled by first unlocking your bootloader then flashing back your stock recovery then relock bootloader and then flash the RUU or stock zip file thru either ADB /fastboot on your computer or via SD card and renaming the image OP9CIMG and hboot should pick it up and flash it automatically. Did you accidentally wipe your system or try to flash something that corrupted it? In other words what happened before all this? We're you rooted with a custom recovery or still on stock?

Hi
Thanks for reply. I was attempting to go back to stock and had installed stock recovery and then relocked the bootloader and when i tried to install the RUU it said it was the wrong one.
I then tried the Hboot way but received the same error. I need to find several RUUs to be able to find the correct version for my 816 which i believe is Asian but not sure where.

Oh, ok I get it now. Think the forum I linked you to was for the European a5_ul. Here's a link to some a5_ul roms kitkat and lollipop. I see one of the lollipop versions is Asia. Try to match your CID and version ID or at least your radio ID's before flashing it. "fastboot getvar all" will give you most of that info but it looks like that might be your firmware. Also make sure you relocked your bootloader before flashing. Good luck

Sorry, I wasn't trying to accuse you of doing something to your phone but those pictures don't show me any of that. It just shows that you seem to no longer have an OS with your lack of a CID and something happened to cause this. It's not about finger pointing but getting the issue resolved for you I know. As for helping you unlock your bootloader the method is pretty straight forward and if it didn't work for whatever reason the only real advice I can give is to just try it again. That's how I unlocked mine so maybe it was just a glitch and another attempt will work. For now I'm more concerned that you didn't wipe anything yet your recovery and firmware seen too be missing or at least inaccessible from your bootloader. The factory reset was going to be my first suggestion but since your already done that have you tried to enter your recovery thru ADB/fastboot? (fastboot reboot recovery.) The other thing is what region are you in( India, Asia, European) and does " fastboot getvar all" work from using ADB? Also if your OS is wiped then any RUU flash will reformat your partitions for you and restore your rom. Also were you on kitkat or lollipop stock rom?

Yeah I've never heard of that version before. I only found one link here below that even mentions that CID but no solution. If you haven't flashed the one I linked I'd try it anyway because as long as your S on the signed rom won't flash if it's the wrong one but if your sure it's wrong then save the data hit to your ISP cap. Sorry I wasn't of more help to you.

You are being kind to me by trying to resolve my problem.
1. I tried again but it did not help.
2. I will try "fastboot reboot recovery", and tell you about the result.
3. Through online chat I gave my IMEI to HTC middle east and they told me that my Software Version is 2.34.401.2.
4. " fastboot getvar all" works.
5. You said "if your OS is wiped then any RUU flash will reformat your partitions". Can we be sure that it is wiped? If we can not be sure, is it necessary to do wipes and formats?
6. I was on Lollipop. 5.0.2.
Since you never unlocked the bootloader before, flashing the stock rom(ruu) should work. Give it a shot. Just make sure you flash the same Android version that you had before as downgrading might not work.

1. That's fine. For now it's OK that it's locked. It's only if your stock recovery is gone that you would need to unlock the bootloader and reflash the stock recovery zip file that you would need to find and flash. Hopefully it's still there just inaccessible for now.
2. Just an idea to verify your recovery is still there
3. OK then that's the firmware you want to flash or higher version
4. From that it should have your CID and version ID but if it's corrupted or wiped it may not show. Those 2 are what you usually use to verify the firmware your flashing is the correct version for your region. You can also verify your radio ID as well as most firmware zips show those numbers as well.
5. It's OK an RUU file will reformat everything and bring it all back to stock. It has all the images in it (radio, system, recovery etc.)
6. That's good. Just make sure you flash that version or higher as going down in firmware isn't possible without S off. If you flash the wrong firmware then the signed RUU shouldn't flash.
Also what region are you in ( India, Asia, Europe?) your phones firmware (CID is your carriers region) that you flash needs to match you're CID.

1. I don't know it's still there that's why I used the word "hopefully. You said rename the file to "0P9CIMG.zip".
As getvar shows, my phone's exact modelid is: 0P9C70***
So what is the principle according to which the file should be renamed? that is, what characters of MID should be mentioned before .zip?

If "fastboot reboot recovery" cannot work, it means that I have lost stock recovery.
1. Am I right?
2. If it is not there, is it still possible to flash the rom? Or I must first flash the stock recovery?
3. Is possible lacking of stock recovery what prevents the phone from showing Yes or No page ("Unlocking bootloader?" page)
4. Is it possible just to flask stock recovery for now and leave flashing ROM to some time later?

1. Or it's corrupted but it could still be there.
2. Usually you need to flash back the stock recovery but I've heard of people flashing over their custom recovery with an RUU(rom utility upgrade) and the RUU replaced everything including the stock recovery which is in the file.
3. Not 100% sure on that one. The bootloader is a separate kernel provided with every Android OS so the recovery is separate from it. That one I can't figure out as when you were trying to unlock your bootloader you're firmware was fine at that time I assume. That's the strange part.

What is your "getvar all" information?
(Perhaps I can be able to give you some points.)

No recovery.... ?

Is it possible to have a working phone without a recovery installed ?
Unlocked bootloader, flashed twrp 3.0.1.0, phone wouldn't boot into recovery.
Relocked bootloader cause phone is s-on, ran 401 ruu but can't get into stock recovery but otherwise phone works ok
:banghead:
There is always a recovery installed. Either the stock one or the custom one. What does it do when you go to the recovery?

Just fyi, but I'm pretty sure you can flash RUU in RUU mode with bootloader unlocked.
Phone works fine without recovery, but you can't take an ota, flash roms (custom recovery) or wipe data/cache.
I'd unlock again, and flash either stock recovery, run the RUU again, or flash TWRP 3.0.2-2. Why were you using such an old version in the first place? That's likely the cause of your issue in getting the phone to boot to TWRP.

With s-on you need to relock the bootloader to use official signed ruu files. When he flashed the ruu he could be seeing the exclamation mark that is normal as a warning before entering the stock recovery for which you need to push a volume and power button combo (don't know them heads up)
A possibility is to clear the cache and try to enter again (as this was a thingy on older HTC devices) or indeed as suggested at least to use the latest twrp available

Yes i think it does work again. But that's a try and find out. There is always the possibility i could be wrong.

This is why i love s-off....no more relocking / unlocking the BL with also an increased chance of bricks. The BL isn't made to be relocked and unlocked over and over.

Sorry, but I believe this is misinformation, possibly residual to older HTC devices. I've heard this going back to the M7.
You need to be s-off to flash in download mode, but s-on can flash signed firmware and ruu's in RUU mode. I'm s-off so I can't test at the moment, but I'm about 99% that my information is correct.
S-on, you can only flash same or newer, though. You can't flash older firmware.
See post 19 here:

I'm 100% that you can flash signed firmware package in ruu mode with bootloader unlocked and s-on.

I'm not exactly sure, but up until 3.0.2.2 Captain Throwback didn't even have the device and was working blind. I know he was trying different things to make it compatible with different variants, too, so in my mind that was a test build. I'm not sure why they have it on the downloads page. For me, I always download it from the download section of the twrp thread.

help me to revive my mothers m8

About two weeks ago an OTA update bricked my mothers m8, every time I power up the phone it enters in fastboot mode, can't enter in recovery mode, if I try it shows a red triangle -
I've tried to flash a RUU in fastboot mode but the problem is that the phone is S-ON and locked, can't change CID because of that and I can't find a VODAP304 CID rom.
I've tried to flash stock recovery but I think I can't because S-ON.
Is there any way to make the phone S-OFF in fastboot mode?
can somebody helpme find a VODAP304 rom?
any ideas how to fix the phone?
TIA
My responses below in red font:
Also, is the phone fully stock (not been bootloader unlocked before)?

Red triangle is stock recovery. Although I don't think you should be getting this when installing an OTA update. Try holding vol up, and press and release the power button. This should bring up a menu or the stock recovery options. You can try the option to wipe cache, and to apply update from phone storage, see if that helps. Of course, you can try the factory reset option, as long as you understand this will wipe all data on the phone (might be a last resort, if your mom want to keep anything.

I don't think Vodaphone has RUUs. And as you've seemed to have figured out, you can't flash another version RUU, unless you modify the phone to be s-off and change the CID.
I've tried to flash stock recovery but I think I can't because S-ON.
S-on isn't the problem here. You can't flash an unsigned recovery image (which is likely what you are trying to flash) with a locked bootloader. But stock recovery probably isn't going to help, as already mentioned you are on stock recovery. So I do not recommend going through any steps in order to install stock recovery at this time.

If I do vol up + power bring me to fastboot mode, if I go to HBOOT option and then recovery shows the red triangle,
I can't get to recovery mode.
I've already tried to doa factory reset in fastboot mode but when finishing I enters in fastboot mode again.
do you think is there any way to find and flash a correct recovery for the phone?

No, you are misunderstanding. While you are on the red triangle screen hold vol up and press and release power. Doing so should bring up the menu shown in the 2nd photo on the following link: http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-one-m8-rooting-roms-hacks/384542-guide-how-reboot-into-stock-recovery-htc-one-m8.html

You are never going to be able to make a signed zip file, unless you have the HTC encryption tools, which from all I've seen, are not public.
You are creating solutions which are much more complicated than the problem.

finally I managed to fix the phone, had to unlock bootloader, flash twrp, restore nandroid backup and reflash stock recovery.
I returned the phone to my mother without testing any sim card, now she said that she can't get any call or data without WiFi, seems that phone have a radio issue.
do you think if I restore again the nandroid backup should it work? factory reset?

Most of the time this usually fix the radio issue as long as there is no hardware issue.

By pressing volume up and down on the black screen, it does not display any message or menu, only if I press down volume and power send me to the bootloader.

I'm not sure if the recovery that I installed is the right one for my phone.

That's the stock recovery that you just flashed. Now boot normally and the stock recovery will be able to attempt to flash the OTA update.
Edit: Power button + Vol Up to see recovery options IIRC.

It is definitely the right one, extracted from a 2.41.400.5 RUU by the user who shared this. As mentioned you should power up your phone normally and let the ota install.
If it's not happening that way then your ota file might be corrupted and I would suggest that you RUU back to stock if you can't boot into Android or your backup cannot be restored somehow.

The stock recovery can not start the phone, try to flash the ota that is in the sd card and deploy signature error.
I read the related threads but it is not very clear to me, if I can restore the phone to nougat or oreo without brick or without using ninja root sunshine.
I also found this RUU https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/india-htc-10-india-users-t3357288/page60 https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72475229&postcount=534 but I do not know if it is the correct one or if there is already an Oreo RUU for the Indian version.
I thank you very much for your help

That is the Nougat RUU for your device. You should be able to use this to get back to stock nougat and take OTAs to Oreo. Currently no Oreo RUU is available for the Indian version so this is the only route.
Just download the file and rename it 2PS6IMG.zip, place it in the root directory of your SD card and flash it in download mode.

Thanks, I was able to install the RUU and restart the phone. The problem that now I do not have imei or baseband or mobile data. In this case I should try to install the ota oreo or follow this tutorial:

Just take ota to Oreo and your imei and baseband problem will be solved, unless you want to stay on nougat. In that case you follow the steps listed in the thread you linked in your previous post.
