No USB OTG support?! - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Guides, News, & Discussion

This one's a shocker for me. Lot of websites lists OTG as one of the supported features of the XZ1 Compact, but today I was unable to use it and turned to Google for help.
My search turned up this recent thread on Sony's forums: https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xper...G-support-for-Xperia-XZ1-Compact/td-p/1266035
An official Sony representative seems to confirm that OTG is not supported. Noooooooo!
Xperia devices do currently not support USB On-The-Go (USB OTG), but they do support the USB Host standard.
Xperia XZ1 Compact support the following; HID, USB hub, USB mass storage and Audio. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee compatibility with third party USB accessories. However do make sure that you are using a USB-host adapter and not just a USB cable.

99% of the time this phone works perfectly for me, but that 1% time when I need to use OTG... goddamn it. Yet another compromise.
So, let's see, no FM radio, no double tap to sleep/wake, distorted photos, and now no OTG. Wonder what new missing feature I'll discover next for f***'s sake.
The XZ1C is certainly no cheaper than any of the Z family compact series, yet they've removed so many useful features for unknown reasons.
Why, Sony? Why?
Why are you crippling your flagship phones?
Why are you the only player making top end spec'd phones in compact dimensions? I literally have no alternative option! (And no, the iPhone SE is not a competitive product, the screen is tiny and it's a few generations too old.)
S835 + 4GB RAM + 720p 4.6" screen + 2700mAh battery is a freaking sweet winning combo, plus SD card, 3.5mm jack, fingerprint sensor and waterproof - they are all insta-buy bullet points... but all these little pitfalls man, really, really sticks out like a sore thumb.
Can't express my disappointment enough.

What were you trying to use USB OTG for? I plugged in a flash drive and it worked.

Per Sony rep's reply, certain USB Host standards are supported (HID, USB hub, USB mass storage and Audio), which is why you were able to read the flash drive, but USB OTG isn't supported.
I'm trying to use a Easycap video adapter with my phone. It used to work with Z3C and Z5C, alas, no longer.

It appears that I'm having issues as well.
I yet have to try some other Type-C adapters.

That sucks. It was also useful for making backups if your screen is broken. With the digitiser bonded to the LCD in some brands like Sony's, cracked glass means unusable touch.

I tried my xz1 compact OTG USB with solid explorer with OTG plugin, the result looks solid explorer on the USB OTG but then does not display it in the explorer menu, there is something wrong with it.

OTG WORKS.
Bull****. NOT CONFIRMED. XZ1 Compact with USB mouse works.

So of course USB mouse is expected to work, as are USB flash drives. But OTG is not supported.

Exactly.
Which is unfortunate, because I think my FLIR One relies on OTG functionality.
I'll see about that once I get my adapters.

Sony have really dialled back on what they support. No "Remote Shares" is the one that bugs me the most. My Z3C was the best phone I've ever owned, this one is turning out to be a bit of a lemon. Which I had bought a OnePlus 5 or Honor 9 now.

If anyone has a problem, it's you with that attitude of yours. I don't really understand the need for such hostility.
I've quoted straight from the horse's mouth that OTG is not supported, the source is linked in my original post.
If you believe there's a contradiction in that statement, please take your argument to Sony's rep.
The OTG function I was able to use previously on my Z5C (which supports OTG) is no longer working on the XZ1C.
So your claim that all OTG functions works is questionable.

Did a quick test. Usb SD-Card, usb mouse, usb keyboard and usb UVC video (is this OTG?) are working. All tested via usb-x to usb-c adapters.
Update: Did the test on latest firmware update: 47.1.A.2.374

The video thing is good to hear.
Mind if I ask, what adapters do you use? Do you happen to have a link for them?

For the full size usb to c I order the following:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New...-3-0-Female-Adapter-OTG-Data/32798937324.html
Out of three ordered two worked for OTG. One did not.
For micro to c I ordered:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Min...r-converter-for-Macbook-Letv/32788873052.html
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/USB...r-Converter-Connector-For-LG/32694996723.html
They worked for OTG (so far).
For c I also ordered:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Met...nnector-Type-C-Male-to-USB-2/32815823175.html
No luck on OTG, only 'normal'.
Be aware, your mileage still may vary. Tested adapters also on a Pixel but that gave different results. Some worked on both, some only one of the two. Do not know the details at the moment.

thanks for your input I'll probably buy one of them. I was wondering though, anyone manage to get ethernet working? There's no grayed out ethernet option..
thinking about getting this one: amazon.com/Smays-Ethernet-compatible-Raspbian-Raspberry/dp/B00L32UUJK (sorry forum wouldn't let me make a link)

the otg with the new firmware and ok 471.A.2..374

this isn't the xperia z1 compact.

I believe you're in the wrong thread. searching "firmware 14.4.a.0.157" in google only comes up with xperia z1 compact results. Are you saying that the firmware update is compatible with the xperia xz1 compact?
EDIT: Sorry, my mistake. I realized that its also for the xperia xz1 compact. I found out by going to Settings>System>About phone

I might have to return mine, it seems that OTG does not work for me.
I already tried various devices with 3 different adaptors, none of them even get powered.

I tried micro to type C adaptor by Nillkin, not working.

[Q] HDMI cable

Anyone know where one can be brought? also why have I read stuff about the s2 having mini usb? it doesn't it has the same propriety connector as the galaxy s.
It's MHL. It's the supposed new 'standard' for connectivity. I think most devices are using that connection nowadays. Last I heard was Clove saying the MHL adapters won't be out until June.

really? so the original galaxy s had mhl as well? Any suggestions on what to do with my fancy new phone? so far apart from being super quick it just seems like a sleaker bigger galaxy s, I cant think of anything my galaxy s couldn't do :S
Oh I know I'm gonna see if the wii mote works on this thing

I can't find any evidence that it did.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-definition_Link
It's the new standard, but that doesn't mean older devices support it. The SGS2 is one of the first AFAIK
But nothing on the market will currently work? HDMI out from a mobile is just supercool!
I have both an sgs1 and sgs 2, my charger fits the micro usb (the only i/o connector) on the phones, perfectly
The connectors should be the same on the S1 and S2, but only the S2 is MHL compatible.
I think MHL can use any 5 pin connector to send an HDMI signal while receiving power for charging.
I'm not sure if you'll be able to use the MHL HDMI out and USB at the same time, but I hope this is possible.
I'm also guessing that the adaptor will need to be a clever one with circuitry rather than a passive adaptor. Does anyone know if this will definitely be the case, and if so I'd imagine it'll have cost implications! Hope I'm wrong and a passive adaptor is possible
Coming from a LG Optimus 2x, that came with a Micro USB ---> HDMI cable. These are available from Ebay for a GBP 10 - would these work?
Yea guessing its just MHL compatible as the old port was usb compatible. Thats annoying, with all the talk of this new standard usb-hdmi port I was assuming it would use a standard connector and not a proprietary one.
It stupid really if all manufacturers used the same connector we wouldn't have to have multiple chargers/docks/cables
You can't use the USB port for MHL and USB functions at the same time, this is confirmed (if you search for MHL at youTube there is a great video with a person from the MHL consortium explaining it).
To badasschris: this isn't a proprietary port. Samsung, Nokia, Sony, HTC, Toshiba, and quite a few other partners are involved with it, it seems likely to become the standard for mobile devices (iPhone aside, I am sure Apply will continue to push their proprietary ports).

Are you absolutely sure it isnt proprietary? Why I am getting confused is because it has the same port as the galaxy s1 and I heard nothing about that being a standard port and you always have to buy a samsung charger not a [standard port] charger e.g. mini usb charger for any devices which have mini usb. So you are saying at some point the other manufactorers will have the same port and I will be able to use my galaxy s charger to charge them?
Galaxy S is a standard micro USB port, and lacks the MHL connection, its not proprietary at all, I use several non-Samsung cables to charge the phone in my car and from PCs. Most manufacturers, Apple excluded, use micro USB charging now.
The port in the Galaxy SII is not the same as the Galaxy S, as it has MHL connectivity in addition, but its function as a micro USB port for mass memory and charging is perfectly standard, and doesn't require special cables or connectors of any kind.

Glad I got that sorted.

That sucks. I was hoping to look into making a tablet dock that used a USB capacitive touch screen & HDMI output for the screen.
A laptop dock using Bluetooth for the keyboard and HDMI for the screen would still be possible, or a tablet that used Bluetooth for the touch-screen.
This phone is powerful - it's annoying not to be able to use the hardware for more than just a phone.
I reckon Motorola is thinking along the right lines with the Atrix, and I hoped other manufacturers would be too, but this combined port indicates Samsung are probably not.

Plus you have the added fact that samsung like to mess with bluetooth meaning many devices wont work with it. I really hope the bluetooth situation gets fixed somehow as this device paired with a screen and a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and game pad gives you a portable computer / games console. without it its just an amazing phone
This should work perfectly with bluetooth mouse and keyboard, my SGSI does. It should also work with a Zeemote, unfortunately it doesn't have enough buttons to be that good for using in emulators.
I can confirm that the igo stowaway bluetooth keyboard works fine w/the SGS2 in case anyone's curious

Xperia S USB OTG

I have been trying to use some flash drives as external storage however I ran into some trouble.
1. First of all without rooting and getting a kernel or something (which I cannot do as my phone is sim and bootloader locked to o2 right now) it can only read FAT32 formatted drives rather than NTFS.
This means I have to either split >4gb files into two smaller pieces or re-encode. I don't like re-encoding because of the great hdmi output so why not carry full blu-ray rips
2. Does anybody know the power output of the USB port in the Xperia S? Is it something like 100ma or less? As you can see from my photos below here are my tests,
Sony 16gb Micro Vault Click USM-L (pink)...........works fine.
Sony 16gb Micro Vault Click USM-P (black)...........works fine.
Verbatim Stor N Go 32GB Micro USB (tiny one)..........USB Power Consumption Error
I don't like the fact that it is hit and miss when choosing drives and don't always want to carry around a powered USB hub or a Sony Ericsson Livedock instead of the tiny drives and the lightweight micro usb->female usb cable.
Its meant to be "USB On-the-go" not "USB can't go because my arms are tired and bag is full"
There is NO information on either Sony's nor Verbatim's website regarding the power consumption of their flash drives.
Any suggestion's?

hi i also bought a cheapy one from ebay and its perfectly fine
yes usb keyboard and mouse works fine, tried logitech k800 with unifying receiver and also tried microsoft keyboard and mouse desktop combo with big ass usb receiver. i have not tried bluetooth yet but that would be preferable to me because it will take one less port.
i would also like to hear about the livedock or if anyone has made a a simple y cable with "micro usb male" (to go into phone) split into "female usb" (for usb device) and "female microusb" (for charging input).
In fact why not go the whole kaboodle
A. Keyboard & Mouse & Headset & Phonejoy controller & Smartwatch : simultaneous Bluetooth
B. Flash Drive or USB Hub with multiple drives: Micro USB to USB adapter
C. TVOUT : HDMI
D. Charging : Female Micro USB input from same spliiter cable as B
now its a full desktop, NES, SNES, whatever all controlled by any of the above and the damn thing is the size of your hand
View attachment 962244
Basically does something like this exist?
This cable should in theory have the same functionality of the bulky livedock?
I was thinkink about same thing: y cable, so we were able to access flash drive (memory card) along with charging the phone. But i think it is not possible with JUST a cable. I think it is possible with live dock, but live dock probably got some sort of electronic curcuit board which controls flash drive and charging at the same time. Unless you would buy live dock for other phone (P in example), take curcuit board out and do DIY.

That all sounds really cool to experiment with, but thats alot of gear to cart around... wouldn't it be easier just to buy say a PSP(homebrew) or perhaps a PSvita? Emulation is wasted on a touch screen.
The kernel mods in the dev section have already enabled ntfs fs reading amongst other things, you could flash these right now or the first roms will probably have this soon which should help you out quite a bit.
I bought the livedock for the XPS hoping it would work for usb charging via computer, it does not; a Y cable is a good idea tho... unfortunately the dock just does not suit the XPS at all, does not sit correctly, u have to lean the dock usb connector on the ground for the whole setup to be "somewhat" stable and just looks silly, not to mention unsafe.
Those clove youtube vids area bit of a con imo.

Any reason why? You can buy it of ebay for just a couple of pounds and is working fine.
I connected Logitech RumblePad to my xperia S (Using some samsung USB adapter)- including vibrations, so i think power output is pretty ok.

hi it wouldn't be too much to carry around, consider having a phone and a vita and a laptop? at what cost. you'll still always need at least 2 devices, you phone and another. now you can have all three from one nice looking device and can take each accessory when required. ie all three to a hotel, just the keyboard for working on, just the gamepad when you feel like it. check out the freedom pro keyboard (better than a laptop's) or the phonejoy for a full vita beating experience (comfort wise - wireless on big screen anywhere)
and minimising what we need to carry is the whole point of finding if such a y cable works because then we don't have the added bulk of the Livedock...
thanks for your review of the livedock, even more reason to want that cable! I cant believe there is no grip, i wouldn't have been able to assume that from the Clove videos. its a bit silly that the Xperia P has the new smartdock but because they put our ports on opposite sides we can't use it
i noticed the devs have a kernel for ntfs compatibility but i cant use it as i havent even received my sim unlock code from my network let alone finding out if my locked bootloader can be unlocked after this. plus ive just discovered how bad the yellow tint issue is on my phone, so its a bit of a wait for me!

yeah but i don't think the wireless receiver for the rumblepad takes up as much power as constant reading from and powering a flash drive would. the wireless receiver doesn't need much compared to that and the controller itself has its own battery
nevertheless you could be right in suggesting that the power output is ok as it powers some but not all drives, so if its not power output then there is some other reason for the compatibility issue with each usb device... so we should do a list of what drives work and which dont

I know the right angled ones will be better, but i just love the build quilty of the Nokia one so will probably give it a try.
To anyone interested in OTG cables:
Guys, the Nokia OTG cable works just fine and is VERY good quality and very common anywhere (quite cheap as well).
Tested by me. Already connected my 16GB Ultra Speed Transcend USB drive and works fine.
I've been using OTG since day 1 when i got the unit - like the OP says, the power consumption of the USB port for devices are hit-and-miss.
Some usb drives works great, some consumes too much power and cannot be powered on; so far, my wireless keyboard+touchpad set (rapoo) works great.

Otg type-c adapter problem

after looking through many forums, it seems that the issue is that OnePlus has used a slightly different setup with a 2.0 usb type-c connector so it doesn't work with anything other than their first party connectors. I have tried to connect a kingston data traveler microduo 3c and it isn't recognised either
So the issue is a hardware problem i guess, only solution is to buy their usb type c to micro usb adapted and then plug OTG cable?
So there will be no software fix...
Where do we find this orignal convertor

Hmm... I have the original OTG cable from oneplus, 2 other OTG cable ( 1 is USB 2 and the other works both with USB2 and USB3 with power up mass storage) and none of them work for my OPT.... HOWEVER they work for my OPO.... fking oneplus....
Thank you for your responses.
Hope that android MM or CM will give a solution!
i asked the oneplus official, they said ONLY THEIR OTG adapter can work with OPT...
and what's worse, they are currently out of stock of this stupid adapter! They told me to visit offline shops. oh are you kidding?
well that sucks. I was planning to buy a OPT but decided not to. they decided to leave quick charge/turbo charge alone and made some modifications on their port so only their product would work. what about the countries where it's hard to ship a product. damn this is lame
I bought a third-party USB-C to Micro-USB adaptor from Amazon that works with Micro-USB OTG drives and my old Micro-USB OTG cable with a USB mouse & USB memory sticks.

Anyway I bought an OTG adapter (uUSB) and an uUSB-TypeC adapter (Xiaomi) and it works! (seems the problem is type C otg are always 3.0 op2 does not support USB 3.0 standard)
Mmm tbh I only use my USB stick and that always seems to work okay. USB C is just future proofing got to wait for rest to catch up now.

USB OTG Poorly Supported

USB-C to USB-A OTG Cable -
Not able to power a simple external USB MSata Drive or External USB HDD - I plug these drives into a LG V10 or a Galaxy S8 and work perfectly fine. What gives? I have only able to get a flash drive to work.
Any known work a rounds? Anyone else try this?
Thanks,

I tried this just now and am shocked it doesn't work either.
I wonder if OTG power support was removed due to the decrease in battery size? Has anyone tried OTG "audio output", say through a device like the audioquest dragonfly, to see if that works??

I don't think so, since the notification that pops up when I connect 32 GB ADATA USB 3.0 flash drive -> USB 2.0 A female to micro-B male OTG cable -> micro-B female to USB-C male adapter -> Z2F says the Z2F is providing power to the connected device. The problem is you can't do anything else BUT that.

I'm wondering this myself. The fact that the Z2F outputs analog audio over USB-C leads to me to believe that it isn't fully USB-compliant.* Both the HTC U11 and Google Pixel 2 output digital audio, which, based on Google's crowing about USB-PD and the existence of devices like the dragonfly, appears to be the right way to do things (albeit with the tradeoff of more expensive audio peripherals, which much now have their own onboard decoding hardware.)
*Can anyone with knowledge of the USB spec comment on this?
BTW, I started a support thread about this at the official forum, where it's received several replies and suggestions from a mod. Kindly chime in there too so Lenovo can see this is a real issue they need to address.

So based on this Motorola mod post and the OP's statement that USB-C flash drives work, the Z2F and Z have the same (lack of? LOL) OTG functionality. The Moto Z subreddit has a pretty extensive thread about Moto Z DAC functionality; it appears the Dragonfly is supported, among others.

Interesting development: another Motorola Forms mod now says powered USB hubs are rumored to work. We're making progress, folks.
Okay fellas,
I so far have been able to get certain drives to work and others not! I have tried 2 different USB-C to USB-A cables and get the same results, 1st ones an HP cable and 2nds an Anker USB-C to USB 3.1 Adapter
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01COOQIKU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have been able to get a 256gb M2Sata Drive, 500gb WD Mypassport, and a 2TB Mypassport to read.
I also have a 256gb MSata Drive that will not power up or read without using a powered usb hub. However the Msata Drive will read without an added powered HUB. On the Samsung and LG Devices.
Only thing I can think of is that certain drives have higher amperage that the Moto Z2 simply cannot push through its USB-C Port.
Good to know it isn't just me experiencing broken USB OTG support.
I've got a PS3, PS4, and Xbox one controller I hook up with USB OTG. Normally it's as simple as plug n play and I'm good to go. However, that doesn't seem to be the case here. I can still pair the PS3/4 controllers in sixaxis just fine and get power to the PS3/4 and Xbox one controllers. And yes, that bit about supply power to device rather than transfer and you can't pick something else, happens to me too. Sometimes I can plug my thumb drive in and I can explore through the storage file explorer, but I usually have better luck with an app called X-Plore.
This one time I even had said thumb drive take out my entire OS to the point where I had to use that June ROM to reset me back to start. Spoiler alert: I kept getting "Android.process.acore keeps crashing" over and over; various other apps kept crashing as well.
On a side note if I can at least get PS3/4 controllers to work for a long time within say, sixaxis (or similar) I'd appreciate any tips. Otherwise I either gotta wait for this to be solved in a future upgrade, future sixaxis, or when we start getting custom ROMs..

This is excellent information, thanks a lot man.
So FYI I tried the Anker adapter @XE-Cherokee linked to and it worked perfectly. That seems to be the solution for now.

Appreciate the heads up, to confirm this adapter works perfect with my external drives, and as an added plus, also my external DAP/amps for audio playback.

The latest Neutron and USB Audio Player Pro will output bitperfect (non upsampled) audio perfectly to both my portable DAC/amp units.
USB Audio Player pro, has the benefit that you can stream tidal native, bitperfect if you have an acct. Which is awesome imo. Tidal still buffers SUPER slow on this device though. So I'd recommended only offline use (which you CANT do with USB audio player pro due to licensing)
I would also add that I get some scratchiness out of the stock USB C to 3.5mm dongle that came with the phone. I thought it was the port being "dirty",. but I have NO NOISE out of the USB audio output using the Anker otg cable. Maybe Anker makes a USB c to 3.5mm adapter.
One tip for getting USB powered OTG drives to work is to use as short a USB cable as possible. Like get a good quality 1ft USB cable. I used to have a similar problem with using an external drive on a Wii and found that a 1ft cable would allow me to use 2 different drives that otherwise would not work with a 6ft cable.
It worked!
I used a USB 2.0/type C adapter that cames with s8 and instead the original USB 3.0 cable, put another adapter, and transferred files with Total Commander.
On this subject but kinda off topic. How are you all getting your drives mounted? I cannot mount NTFS or fat32 drives. Only ext3/4 drives.

Yep, basically you created a 2 inch cable. LOL.
In essence, many USB powered hard drives approach the power limit of what the USB port can output. Power drops over the length of a USB cable, so longer cables may not provide sufficient power for the drive to function correctly. Better quality cables usually have less power drop, though it is not a guarantee.
Unfortunately most USB powered drives do not list their power requirements. The only way to really tell is to open the case for the USB drive and look at the hard drive inside it to find how many amps it draws. For the best compatibility you want the lowest amps.
I don't think that's otg power issue. I think it is locked by Moto becuase they want you to use their add-on devices. I have a wifi camera it doesn't work either, But it works in my all other phones

Just because an add-on device works for one USB OTG implementation doesn't mean that it works on all USB OTG implementations. There is an enumeration of what devices and types are accepted. I have tested USB OTG audio microphones, USB OTG audio speakers, USB OTG Headphones, USB OTG Ethernet, USB OTG Keyboards, USB OTG Flash drives and those device types work. If there is no device driver for the device attached then it would need to be supplied by an app. OTG power drain is definitely an issue and is mentioned in the OTG specifications.
That's what I tried to say. It is locked by Moto. They want you to use their add-on mod. I have tried extrenal usb c endoscope camera, wifi endoscope camera, lg wireleas projector, Samsung projector. None of them work with Moto. However, the same apps work in all other phones. It is clear to see, it is not all otg related all the time or driver which provided by app. It could be just locked by Moto, becuase they want use to use their mod add-on. People who rooted the phone was able to turn on those supports.
I use a Belkin OTG adapter, it worked but it was extremely picky. The Built in files app only picked up my HDD if it was either Fat32 or exfat. But the ES File Explorer app only picked up NTFS.

Charger/USB-C - 3.5mm Adapter

Are there currently any adapters that allow charging while also using a 3.5mm jack?
The Google store has this, but nobody can give me any information on what "Coming Soon" means.
Any ideas?
Moshi has them available for purchase now, but only on their web site and not through google.
Hopefully that means google will have them soon, I really want one to leave in my car but i dont know if i can justify the 45$ price tag.

Edit: out of stock now
Edit 2(Nov. 8): back in stock.

I was researching for such a solution. In the XDA U11 forum, I saw this and ordered it, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0R1F1M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. You plug the provided 3.5mm adapter into it. It would be a bad portable solution, but might be good enough for a desk. I will report back on whether it works for the Pixel 2.

Yes please report back. As I understand those adapters need to have a DAC builtin, but if you are using oem dongle then perhaps it can communicate to phone through this adapter

I dont know if you looked at the product, but what he is doing is using the included USB-C to 3.5mm adapter that came with the phone, so that DAC would be there.
Spoke with manufacturer, they said it will work 100%
But I already gave away my P2, I decided to keep P1 for now until 8.1 release at least. I was excited about camera but I prefer P1 images they look better to my eyes

It works completely! I tested a bunch of scenarios and am very happy. Only drawbacks so far are the thing is about half the size of the phone and the pigtail is about four inches.
Here is what works:
Rapid charging with a USB-C charger
Playing back music through the supplied USB-C audio adapter with and without charging attached
USB cable to an iPad (at least it connected and was recognized but I could not access pictures; I had the same issue with the data transfer adapter so I don't think this hub is at fault)
USB cable to a Canon camera
USB memory card reader
It would not read my micro SD card in the hub's slot initially but I got it to work.
Notes:
I did not test using the headset adapter with a wired microphone. I don't know if that is supported and don't have one.
You don't have to change the USB settings to get it to work. It just worked automatically.
The charging port is the one closest to the pigtail. The other port doesn't work for that purpose. The white lettering on silver case is hard to read so it is easy to miss which port is required for charging.
I didn't test it with HDMI because I cannot get the phone to work with the HDMI cable I purchased even when directly connected.
Here is the link again: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0R1F1M/
*edit: got the card reader to work.
Hopefully we'll have a portables position under $45!
In the meantime I bought a Bluetooth receiver so in the car I can charge and use BT for audio to the car.
You could also buy a Bluetooth receiver and plug your earhones in it.

So the 4 inch pigtail goes into the phone, the PD charging port is connected to your Pixel wall charger, and the 3.5 USB c adapter connects to the data only USB C port?
Did you try to connect a keyboard, mouse, or USB Ethernet adapter to the USB A side? I am curious if those device work on the Pixel 2.
Thanks for your info.

Correct; that is how I connected it. I tried an AnyKey security key that presents a USB keyboard interface and that worked as a keyboard. I don't have a mouse or ethernet adapter to try. I did also try a USB memory card adapter and that worked too.
I'm using this one, which is the same as the one above but cheaper. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075FHLTNM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It will charge the phone rapidly, play audio through the headphone dongle, read a micro SD card, read USB keys through the USB A ports, all at the same time, not bad for $14.
Moshi speaks!
FYI, this is response I got from Moshi rep, regarding the charge/play adapter.
While we do not know when exactly it will be available in Google's store, the same product is already available in our own web store - https://www.moshi.com/usb-c-digital-audio-adapter-with-charging
We are aware of that some users have been experiencing issues with this adapter, and we are already working together with Google on a solution for this. With that said, it appears that this only affects certain Pixel devices, as a clear majority of users (including our own product team and Google) haven't had any issues when testing multiple adapters on the Pixel devices in our office.
Although our team does not have a solution for the reported issues at this time, they are currently working with different software updates to see if this may resolve the issue. We are therefore not working on any hardware upgrades at the moment.
Hope this information helps.

Same here. I would love to find anything that will let me listen to my music with my wired headphones and charge my pixel 2xl at the same time. Google created this situation for us when they removed the jack. You would think they would at least have one solution. So if you could send me a new link or post it here, that'd be great!
