Whats the deal with patches / software updates now? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Active Questions & Answers

Hey All,
Are we now in the back of the line since the S8 came out? The last "security patch level" I have is August 1st, which actually is causing a lot of lag (July's patches really sped things up for me).
Has anyone received a more recent update? I have a feeling with the S8 now being out, we may be seeing quarterly updates instead of monthly updates.
Chris

Yeah August is still the latest update. I don't think lag is normal after an update - consider backing up your data and performing a factory reset if you're having problems.

I think they might be working on the Oreo update.

I wiped the cache and things are a lot better with the lag - hoping we get Oreo or at least the security updates continue.

Glad that the wipe made it better. I would be surprised if S7A doesn't get Oreo!

Since MM update, screen/phone have moments of lag and sluggishness

Hi,
After receiving the MM update, I noticed a bit of lag to screen scrolling and when using certain apps. You can almost see a slight pause as things move around the screen. In my attempt to start fresh, I performed a factory reset. Unfortunately, the reset hasn't appeared to correct the problem. I'm not sure if there is a setting somewhere that is biting me or if there is a bigger problem. I've also attempted to wipe the cache, but that hasn't improved things either.
Now the phone just feels sluggish at times. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Since there is no root on mm i guess at this time ure options are kinda limited. Try developer options and like before previous versions of android try shutting off all the animation scales at least turning them down helps provide a snappier expierence. Closer to the bottom of dev options there should be 3 settings next to each other i turn mine off
The update is a disaster. Keyboard lag makes the phone borderline unusable. Knowing any update has to go through LG amnd VZW before patching again, makes me want to deal with non-removable battery on Nexus next time. Those devices never lag.

Not only keyboard lag, lag in app loading, auto rotation is slow and at times doesn't work, pages in Chrome load slow, erratic battery life.
I don't know if this is Verizon or marshmallow that has caused all the issues with this update but I believe this is one of the worst update's I have received on any phone.
A huge disappointment in my opinion!
Edit: 25a update last night resolved most all my issues and most likely others. I don't know about battery life yet, but I am pleased that this update came as quick as it did.!!
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing these symptoms. I'm not a power user but the phone is doing some very strange things since this update. I'm finding more and more that apps are stopping unexpectedly. Most recently was the google sync process. I'm very tempted to take the phone to a Verizon store and see if a brand new phone has MM on it and if it is having the same problems. If the new phone doesn't have MM, I may try to get them to swap it out.
Interesting. I'm receiving SW Update notification today. I wonder what it resolves.

Has anyone else noticed slowdown on his phone after January 5 Patch?

I have seen noticeable slowdown on my device after updating to the latest security patch January 5th on Android 8.1.0.Anyone else having the same problem? All apps seem to have slower startup time and inside the apps I see some lags.
yes me to i noticed that , slowdown and a lot of lags
Mine is flawless, no lags
Yes, I have. Boot takes about 5 times longer before widgets start to respond.
Yes very laggy, honestly thinking about moving back to a custom rom
Mine is not slow but if I say reboot it stucks on Google logo and nothing happens. I always have to shut down to boot properly. Only booting without any issue when connected to pc and saying fastboot reboot. Can't understand why, it's rooted and everything else is working properly.
Lagging and slowdown solved after factory reset
After I did a factory reset on my device it feels again pretty fast like before. Somehow a factory reset can solve almost anything!Maybe the problem was that I installed the OTA by sideloading.

I sideloaded mines too and i started getting these lags, I'll try a factory reset also and see if it works also
It really sucks.
Yes, just terrible performance.
Maybe LG just heard about Apple and thought it's good idea to do same, to get us upgrading.

My nexus 5x, comes back from repair. Mainboard replacement and I upgraded it to android 8.1.0. It's fast. But it's not my phone anymore
Gesendet von meinem G8341 mit Tapatalk
Actually, without me doing anything, the phone has become a bit more responsive over the last day or so.
Not slow. But the battery is draining furiously fast.
Spent 3 hours last night doing factory reset, then a complete "flash-all.sh" of OPM3 with wipe, then reinstalling everything. Seems to be OK now.
My phone was unusable after official ota.
Seems like a factory reset made it usable again
My 5x is almost unusable after last update, e.g. I tap on google search, start typing and it takes sooo long to display the text.
Will try factory reset and hope it helps.
I finally had it with my laggy N5X. I had done a factory reset before 8.1. January update seemed to slow it down. Ticked off the Skia GPU Renderer as suggested somewhere. It seemed t improve. Then, Feb update even slower. Ticked off the Skia again, not much improvement. The lag is 10-15 sec in opening apps--any apps. Put the phone back on Dec build (OPR4). Factory reset. Everything returned to normal even with Google replacing all 126 apps this time. Finally satisfied that performance was good, I let the phone run the Jan. update. I didn't wait too long (not long enough to really test it out). Then, Feb update. Now, I have to go back to Dec build as the phone is so slow again--immediately after the Feb update. I did tick Skia but no difference this time. During these "trials," I left everything 100% Android--no TWRP, no alt. kernel, no root. I'm OC and hate that damn update icon on the notification screen but not as much as I hate the lag. My Nexus 5 is faster than the 5X right now, but I need the larger screen these days.

Pixel 3XL still choppy and laggy after March update

I'm sure everyone has their gripes with this phone, but my main one has to deal with the overall smoothness of the device. Since day 1 it has been, at most times, horrendous. Animations are choppy at best, pulling down the notification shade is choppy, and opening apps is like watching someone stutter. Of course, doing a factory reset and rebooting every time your phone starts to slow down works, but who wants to do that every 30 minutes? Not me. But that's been my experience.
One other thing I've noticed is that any time I have a pending notification from Poke'mon Go, the phone's general smoothness comes to a choppy halt. As as soon as I dismiss the notification everything speeds up to normal -- for a short time.
I don't know what else to do. I've started really decreasing what I have and what I've put on my phone for the sake of having a smooth experience, but that's ridiculous. My phone has dwindled down to just that -- a phone. I feel like I can't do anything on it without the lags and stutters coming back to haunt my eyes. I know this phone only has 4GB of RAM, but damn. Something needs to be optimized. I can't play a game while listening to music, check an email really quick without one of the three, -- if not all -- of my apps being killed due to low RAM.
How is everyone else after the March update?
Maybe you should consider asking for a replacement cause it shouldn't be such a problem.

Before you request a RMA, I would suggest Installing the March 2019 factory image 'wipe data'.
This guide will help: [Guide] Pixel 3 XL Android 9.0 (Pie) Unlock/Root/Install Images/Kernels/Recovery + by Homeboy76
Do #4 'wipe data' then #7 or #8 to root.
Note: Use twrp-3.2.3-3 not twrp-3.2.3-4 that has problems.
Why am I recommend you wipe your phone and re-setting up your phone? Your problem might be that one of the Apps or Mods you have installed are not compatible.
Edit: After reading your response, this does not apply. rotflmao

Unfortunately rooting my phone isn't an option right now since mine came from Verizon. At least I know my issue doesn't stem from mods though, right? :crying:

My mistake in 'assuming' instead of asking if you had a Google Pixel3XL.
The fact you have a 'Verizon' Pixel3XL could have been mentioned in the OP. It would have helped screen your responses.
ive played with about a dozen pixel 3 and 3xls and the issue exists everywhere
some people are more sensitive to it than others.
i have literally shown people the "choppy-ness" and they dont see it, so it looks like you may be one of the ones who are more sensitive to these things.
Mine been good for the most part. After one of the updates it felt slow. To the point it was getting on my nerves. I even had to do a reset.
After March update, most is fixed. Feels like a good old pixel.
Still camera experience isn't the fastest but is better than before.
Initial turn on of app like sms, settings, phone takes time but that has always been there since day one.
I didn't notice any choppiness yet anywhere, even in Google feed.
I haven't noticed any major or unusual choppiness on mine. However, I think what apps you use has a lot you do with it. Some apps are just memory hogs and will show down your phone regardless of what it is. I have over 240 apps but none are social media nor games like Pokeman. My phone runs pretty smooth.
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL
I have a Pixel 3 and the camera still sucks after the March OTA. The camera would take forever to load the view finder. It would crash after going from camera to video mode. I have to restart the phone for the camera to work. Needless to say the March OTA did not resolve camera problems.
You are not alone my friend. The laggy-ness is unreal. This led me to want to root my phone and improve performance. I am researching all the things I can before I root. It looks doable but I'm afraid I might brick my phone.
It's a shame that your's is from Verizon. Hopefully, the April update fixes the issues.
Not only have I had this issue, but mine seems to be worse after the March update. It seems to lag the most right after I unlock it (not always), there are times I have to wait for 4+ seconds for it to become responsive. The camera still has some issues, but after using it for a while (the camera and the phone itself), it seems to get more responsive.
I've also noticed a bit of a battery drain. Now showing any apps that can be causing it. Can't say atm if this is due to the update or not as a few days I have used it more, and according to AccuBattery, my phones seems to have not fully charged last night.
This has bothered me since day one...I've come to the conclusion that chrome was a memory hog...been using opera mini , Nova launcher, disabled apps I don't use along with chrome, disabled all background activity, added home screen shortcuts instead of apps. People have blamed it on adaptive battery but now I get no choppiness even with adaptive battery on ... Worth a shot
Interesting. I've stayed on the January update because of this thread, however, I haven't had many issues with choppiness on my Google 3XL. The only time I've ever experienced any choppiness at all was when using certain custom kernels. But as of the January update, the stock kernel usually gets me at least 5 hours of intensive usage screen on time and so I haven't had the need to use a custom kernel.
And also, I'm super sensitive to choppiness as I'm a PC gamer and play everything at 165fps (and so anything under 60fps burns my eyes lol) - so it's definitely not that I'm just not seeing it.
I don’t think this is a pixel issue , more of an android one. I’m very sensitive to Jank. Hopefully android Q will help but I won’t hold my breath.

Did the October update fix Android 10 bugs?

I have seen too many horror stories on here and on the internet with Android 10 and the pixel 2XL to think that I won't have at least one of them if I make the update. The biggest and most concerning complaint I see is crazy battery drain. There have been people having boot issues. There are complaints of root causing issues or not working. There is a whole thread of viper for Android being difficult to implement on Android 10. I have seen threads and articles about weird Wi-Fi connectivity issues. I'm sure there are some other major complaints that I haven't seen or I'm not thinking about this moment.
has the October update fixed any of these? I'd love to do a clean install when I go to Android 10. Since stuff is lost when you do clean installs- idc what ya say, the backups never get everything- I don't want to go to Android 10, have a bunch of issues, and just end up rolling back to Android 9. Then I'm just out a bunch of time and data. I don't want to go to 10 until these major issues are resolved.
I've been on 10 since the Q4 beta and haven't had any major issues - but I'm quite a narrow user, generally have everything switched off except wifi/mobile data, and basically only use it for web browsing/reddit mostly, with occasional pics and sometimes music in the car. But I tend to get 9 hours SOT daily as long as I have signal (I'm often out of signal and get 6.5 hours SOT in those days)
Asides from that it's been solid for my use, I couldn't go back now as I really like gestural navigation, and I haven't noticed any glitches/bugs - best thing I done for battery life was installing Blokada.
Battery is just as good as it was on Beta 4, I have no boot issues and Magisk rooted the phone just fine. The only problem I have is /system and /vendor not mounting but this wont be fixed for awhile according to John Wu because Google changed how they mount in Android 10. If you do install the October update do a fresh install not an upgrade, I bet most of the issues you are describing are due to people upgrading from Pie or the beta and not wiping the phone when they do said upgrade.
i have some issues after upgraded to android Q, i have boot issue which take a long time approximately 5-10 minutes to boot, also my device cannot connect to any wired things ( connect to pc, dongle jack etc). And latest update didn't fix this issues

I dirty flashed from 9 to 10. Then dirty flashed again to October update. I fastbooted into twrp, installed twrp 3.3.0-0 image to recovery ramdisk, rebooted to twrp, flashed magisk, then Ex kernel, rebooted, and all is well for me :good::good:

I know how you feel…I was pushing/pushed it off for as long as I could – til the very least TWRP having write access. But then I read/heard on how the October update specifically addresses some pretty serious security issues/threats!
I dirty flashed/updated to 10, but I made sure to remove any screen-lock and all my Magisk modules – but then found some issues later on where it would’ve been better to uninstall Magisk all together, rather than just the modules.
There are always little hitches that can (and do) come up, but it’s only actually experiencing them that you know whether it’s a worth it enough compromise or not. I say, update it, and if you have issues as big as booting, crashing, or rooting related things, then (as you say) you can always downgrade back to where you’re comfortable and “hitch-less”. But, if it’s Viper (or 1-or-2 apps specifically) just going a little wonky and/or you don’t really rely on, or even battery life (if you get [just] enough anyways), or dark-theme related, then those types of things you can learn to live with and/or “deal” with in the meantime – and it will merely be a bit of an annoyance for the beginning; which, with any kind of upgrade, is usually the case no matter at what point in its version life-cycle. Especially if it’s a “sort-of works” kind of situation. Also, if there are “workarounds” in place as well; then at least it’s not absolutely and totally impossible & incompatible. Then, as always, if it gets too much or too annoying, it’s not that you can’t downgrade and start-over.
I would say my experience is still a mixed bag; but feel I’m on the latter side of things where it’s “buggy”, but not critically and works juuuust enough that it’s not too impossible to get what I want to get done, done. My only real complaint is with the no-button “Gesture navigation”; how can Google NOT include a way to go to your primary homescreen?! It’s not as if the Home button really only had one function nor has it even been that way in the distant enough past to not know better. But at least that was easy enough to revert (as they gave the option)…
Just something to keep in mind…good luck!

I did dirty flash, and now i really want to downgrade to android 9 but i can't because my device wont connect to my pc
My phone occasionally reboots. It has a bug related when you keep pressing back on apps, and there's a few others that I can't remember. It's been like this since beta 5. This android update is a joke and I'm amazed that it ever hit *stable*
There are several kinds of Android 10 bugs which generally users come across after update. Here I have listed some Android 10 bugs and with their solutions. No matter whatever types of bugs you are coming across in your phone after Android 10 update, here are the list of Android 10 bugs and their solutions.

Question Ul Glitches

Had the fold since the 22nd and really loving it. Few things bugging me. Anyone else experiencing UI Glitches from time to time? Examples are the app tray displaying blank which I had to restart the phone to resolve. Outlook app the mail box panel empty even after a closed the app fully was still blank. Scrolling through twitter and often the display flickers at the bottom? Any other users finding things like this? Hoping for a early update from Samsung to flush any ealry bugs
I am holding it since 23rd and it has absolutely been a godsent device
No issues. No hiccups. 256 gb version.
Maybe an update will resolve the issue for you.
Can't say that I'm experiencing these issues.
A hear most to a fresh install not using smart switch which I did. Maybe the time saving was not worth it? do you still use a backup or literally re install everything
I did use Smart Switch and no glitches. It works flawlessly for me.
There is a OneUI update in the Samsung store I noticed.

Checked the galaxy store just says installed no update
Haven't experienced the issues you've mentioned at all. I've had the ZF4 since Aug. 23.
Chrome beta has a glitch on the tabs, mentioned it right from the start. Sure its just teathing issues with the new chipset. USA have had a firmware (pre launch, not checked if its ahead or in line with European launch firmware) so sure something will be along soon, as the security updates are over a month old too.
