Transferring from Nexus 6P - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I went from a Galaxy S3 to a Nexus 6P and didn't bother transferring anything because there wasn't much on the phone. I pre-ordered a Pixel 2 XL and realized there's quite a bit on my phone that'd I'd like to keep. Would it be possible to transfer everything - messages, apps, etc? If not, what cannot be transferred and is there any way to (third party apps, etc).
Mainly looking so I backup what I need and be ready to roll onto a new phone.

Yes you'll be able to transfer mostly everything to your new 2 XL including messages and calls log with the included cable. If you're rooted on the 6P you can use Titanium Backup to do the same.

Sms Backup & Restore is great for moving text messages to a new phone. It's very easy to back them up to Google Drive, and restore them on another phone. I'm going to do this when I switch over.

How do I backup my MAXX and restore into my GN4?

My Galaxy Note 4 arrives tomorrow (supposedly). I need to back up my apps. Normally, I'd probably try to do this with Titanium Backup, but since (I think) your phone has to be rooted in order to use it, I'm out of luck, considering it might be awhile until the Galaxy Note 4 gets root.
I'm looking to backup some apps with their cache, like Kik, CloudMagic and a few others.
I have calls and text messages covered. I have apps for those.

Try using Helium. It does what Titanium does without the need for root.

How to Migrate to the N5X

So when I swapped from a Moto G to a Moto X, I used the Motorola Migrate app to get it to copy all my music, video, call logs, etc over to the Moto X.
Does a tool exist for the N5X to copy this stuff from the Moto X to the N5X? If I just plug them into a laptop with USB I guess I can just copy them over using the file manager. What are my options?
I believe the setup wizard will ask you if you are coming from another Android device. If you have NFC you bump the phones together and it will transfer everything over. I'm not sure if this works to transfer files, but it does transfer apps and even your background.
Yep, have been there, that method does do what you say about apps, they get copied over, but media and call logs do not get copied over. I am assuming the Motorola Migrate will support Android M once the updates for the Moto X to Android M come out.
Yep, looks like we will have to manually migrate media, call logs, texts etc.
Anyone got a good way to transfer the call logs/texts?

I have used:
SMS Backup & Restore
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
Call Logs Backup & Restore
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.CallLogBackupRestore
both By Ritesh Sahu
I have used them many times and they have worked flawlessly.
Since I won't have root on my 5X I'm also going to be trying out:
Helium - App Sync and Backup
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup
by ClockworkMod
I ended up using EasyBackup to transfer, contacts, SMS, call logs. Worked well and was simple to use. Having to wait now for suitable USB cables before I make the file transfers for music and pictures, thought about one of those Wifi File transfer apps. The built in FileManager does have a Nearby Share feature, you have to touch the screens together to initiate the process and click a few buttons which you can see when you have the screens facing each other. Very odd.
Still in Appleland here. Am I out of luck?

Sync your iPhone contacts with Google then when you sign into the 5X it should show up just fine.
Sent from my Sprint Galaxy S5.
I found great mileage with MyBackup Pro (paid for Pro 3 years ago or so...) - I essentially created 2 backups (one for apps and media, the other one for data)...moved the two zip files to my nexus 5x and restored them...as good as new...made sure to do everything in airplane mode...also the app has a migrate feature which works well too.

Notification Sounds Reset

So I copied the contents of my old phone to my new pixel XL. I had custom tones for my contacts, emails, etc, and they all defaulted to silent tones. Any idea why? How to prevent it from happening next time?
Did you transfer the contents via the cord directly connecting the two phones and the transfer program built into the Pixel XL? I transferred via that method from one Google device to another (Nexus 6P to Pixel XL) and it didn't go all that smoothly. Some stuff copied fine and other stuff didn't.
Not knowing anything about the source of your custom tones or how you transferred from your old phone to the Pixel will make it hard for anyone to help you. Providing more info might be a good idea.
Well I transferred everything through USB to my computer from my old phone. Then I transferred everything to my pixel using the same method. They are just mp3 files I made and have used for ages. It could be that I merged the folders as I copied them, maybe

what can backup and restore MMS messages?

Coming from a note4, the last thing I would like to do is transfer my MMS (already did SMS) to my new phone.
Note4 is running stock, ATT variant, so no root capabilities.
Thanks!

Titanium Backup can do it, even without root (one of the few things it doesn't need root for).
Also just FYI during the setup process for your pixel 2 xl, it will prompt you to connect your old phone using the included USB to USB-C adapter to transfer apps/music/photos, call log and messages as well. Coming from a Galaxy S7 Edge, it was able to transfer everything for me *except* for messages, so I ended up using Titanium Backup for that part.
I'm use the pro version of this, but I think the free version would be fine. You just lose the ability to back up to and restore from Google Drive with the free version

I've used tibu for years exclusively....but restoring sms/mms is painfully slow, especially with a lot of messages.... Sms backup and restore is so much faster and easier to use that I'm definitely making a permanent switch for texts
SMS Backup to my Google drive worked great for me this time around!
The phone is supposed to do it automatically if you use Android messages. Unfortunately there can be long periods of time the phone will go without backing up.

How do you force a backup of Google SMS messages? And not one message was restored for me after the device setup...
I use this -> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&hl=en
It backs up SMS and MMS to my Gmail account (so I can read/search via gmail) under an SMS label... But it can only restore SMS, not MMS. To view MMS on a new phone, I have to go into Gmail.

+1 for the app. Works great, have been using it from a long time.
Thanks all, I ended up using SMS backup and restore. Worked perfectly..
I tried to use the built in transfer when setting up the phone. I plugged in the C to A adapter and tried 8 different cables I have laying around, most of them KNOWN GOOD DATA cables and the setup process kept telling me that it couldn't connect and to try a different cables.
Other than the transfer tool not working at all for me, everything else seems to be fine.
Thanks again for the recommendations.
I'm running into the same issue but the problem is I use Textra. So its database is larger than the phone's sms/mms storage database (2gb vs 7gb). It seems like a number of the backup apps only look at the phone database and not the Textra,my default texting app (which makes sense). I tried doing an app-specific adb backup and restore going from my LG G3 to my 2 XL (adb backup com.textra and adb restore backup.ab). However, even when I left the app running overnight, it didn't seem to work. Am I missing something in going from Marshmallow to Oreo? USB debugging is turned on (on both phones), verifying apps via USB is turned off on the Pixel... I may try this later today to see my luck in moving all my messages over to my new phone.

I wish I had an answer to that. I even contacted Google about it and they couldn't give me an answer. Just noticed my pixel 2xl finally backed up texts even though my phone has been setup since Monday morning.

The last I knew, it didn't support MMS. It still doesn't list it in the description. I also had issues backing up because I didn't have an SD card.

It does restore MMS. I used it all the time on my Nexus 6P, and was able restore all my pictures and texts to my Pixel 2xl. Works great!

I may be thinking of a similarly named app, but it doesn't say it in the review, which would be helpful.
I was using Easy Backup, but started getting errors. I didn't realize (and it wasn't clear) that the SD card was full. I tried looking into it to find the app and even the developer was pulled from the Play store. It seems the app (EB) may have some nasty ad stuff in it, so I am looking into alternatives. I will definitely give this one a try, though I wish it had Box integration as that's where I've been putting my backups.

I need to store and save mms photos from text messages from my LG android phone to my computer. Is there an app I need to install first or do I connect my phone to my laptop with a cable to do this? These are really important photos that came from someone and need to be saved. Thanks for the help.

Pixel 2XL to Iphone XS Max...Move to iOS not working

Hi all,
I know this might be blasphemy but I wanted to try using an iPhone XS Max, but the move to iOS app will not connect the iPhone to my Pixel 2XL. It will connect fine with my old Nexus phone running android 8.0.
Has anyone tried using the move to iOS app using android 9.0 and/or the Pixel 2XL?
I tried on a OnePlus on 9.0.. it didn't work either.
I did this exact same swap. Pixel XL2 to iPhone XS Max. I love the new phone very much. I could not get the swap app to work either. I am getting by without anything transferred. I did a backup of my sms to Gmail and also use google photos on my iPhone. I really don’t need much else.

Thanks, could you let me know how you did the sms backup to Gmail? Did that allow you to transfer your texts to the iPhone or are they just stored in gmail for reference?
I didn’t get the sms to transfer from the Pixel to the iPhone unfortunately. I even purchased a piece of software online and it showed the texts and went through all of the actions but never showed up on he messages app of the iPhone. I believe it was called dr.fone swap. The app I used on the pixel was called backup+ and it added a sms label in gmail and threaded all of the sms messages together just like a gmail conversation. Good luck!
Well if it helps anyone, I was able to get texts transferred using my old Nexus phone running Android 8. I transferred all my texts using sms backup and restore and the iPhone connected to the Nexus and transferred everything. The only thing that seems impossible to transfer is whatsapp messages, but I'll settle for that.
