If necessary, unlock the device's bootloader using one of the following methods:
If you are updating a Nexus or Pixel device that is manufactured in 2015 or later, run this command:
fastboot flashing unlock
For some devices, for example, Pixel 2 XL, the critical partitions may also need to be unlocked before flashing. The unlock can be performed with this command:
fastboot flashing unlock_critical

The critical unlock goes a step further and allows users to flash custom bootloaders, which are usually only necessary for removing certain security restrictions or occasionally for adding special features.

so critical only for flashing other bootloader
which is something i never heard before

Can anyone confirm whether running fastboot flashing unlock_critical will wipe your device? I've already run fastboot flashing unlock, which of course does wipe the device, but now I need to know if this new command will do so as well. EDIT: After reading over that android police link, this appears to be nothing new so I doubt this will be required on the Pixel XL 2 now in order to have root since it wasn't required for the 6P or the OG Pixels. This could have changed with the new Pixels, so we'll have to figure out if the critical command is actually needed.

do you think the critical unlock would work against magisk in anyway? I just want to unlock so i can root and get adaway, but use magisk when available to still have android pay and netflix

the unlock_critical is not needed for now
you only need it is flashing a custom bootloader
but for anything else you don't need it
root- recovery -roms - oem update - original bootloader
at least that what the dev google site says

I'm still waiting for the TWRP boot loader to be ready for 2XL. Seeing that I'm probably getting the phone either the end of this week or next week, we still have time.

FYI...you don't have to unlock your bootloader to achieve root. You can still root a phone and have a locked bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader is to allow custom recovery flashing, such as TWRP. Personally, TWRP is a must for me and I always unlock my phone.

how do you plan on rooting with a locked bootloader? I don't believe this is possible on the Pixel/Pixel 2.

Yeah, I guess you're right. It depends on the phone and root method. If you're using SuperSU or magisk you'd have to unlock the bootloader. IDK. Just forget everything I said. LOL

it'd be pretty awesome if someone found a way to root with a locked bootloader. I believe the S8/Note 8 has been rooted with a locked bootloader, now only if this was somehow brought into the world of the pixel. lol.

Unlock_critical is needed to even flash stock bootloader's. To flash 8.1 preview I had to unlock_critical to update the boatloader to even get passed. It's a required check.

Pixel XL Locked

My non-Verizon Pixel XL is stuck with a locked bootloader, OEM Unlocking Disabled, and is unable to boot to recovery, or the system (thus I cannot enable OEM unlocking). When I try to boot, it has the red message stating that my device is corrupt, then it turns off and does not boot.
How can I fix this?
I has AOSPA installed before this all went down, but I agree I made some dumb moves, and I am hoping someone here can help me out of this hole.
How did you lock your bootloader with AOSPA still installed? You always go back to stock before re-locking your bootloader. That was a pretty big mistake, and I'm not so sure there is a way around this.
If it's a Google Pixel XL, then try booting into fastboot (hold Power+Volume Down), run the "fastboot oem unlock" command, without quotes to unlock the bootloader, and flash a stock image.
Hope it works.

Can you unlock the bootloader from the bootloader screen with ADB command like you said when "allow OEM unlocking" in developer options has not been enabled? I'm sure that I could do that when I had the Nexus 6 but haven't tried it with my Pixel XL.
I think the command now is: fastboot flashing unlock

I don't think you can, it's why I wasn't sure it would work, but still worth an attempt. I used fastboot oem unlock when I unlocked my bootloader, so I guess the old command still works, but yeah, fastboot flashing unlock is the new way of doing it. :good:

I've tried it and none of that works. The device is on its way back to Google since I just got a Google coverage plan replacement. Hopefully, they won't pitch a fit that it's locked up the way it is.

Unlikely. Are they going to attempt a repair, or just outright replace the phone?
I'm not yet adept on the ins and outs of flashing stuff on this phone. Is it actually possible to flash a custom Rom on the Pixel XL while the bootloader is locked? I know it's not something anyone who values their phone would even attempt but with most phones you could never do it anyway. I understand there is a temporary TWRP that you can boot into without actually installing the custom recovery on your phone. Does this make it possible to do what happened with this user?

You have to have to unlock your bootloader to install any custom rom on the pixel.
Hey did you ever solve this? im in a similar prediciment. My phone keeps bootlopping, trying to flash an older ROM but bootloader is locked and none of the fastboot oem unlock commands work.

How to Relock the Bootloader For Return

I bought my Pixel 2 XL from Google and I know they have a 15 day return policy but I don't know if unlocking the bootloader voids that. Can I re-lock the bootloader? Has anybody else returned their phone to Google?

simply flash both partitions first then.
Just wipe it and ship it. Google will only inspect it for physical abuse and water damage. The don't care if it's unlocked. It Google, the sell us unlocked phones. I too have sent them back unlocked as have many others.
I just flashed the latest factory image then did a factory reset before I was going to re lock the bootloader. Now the oem unlock option on my phone is greyed out and adb/fastboot fives me errors trying to fastboot oem lock or fastboot flashing lock.

Go to Google's factory image page download January's image and do the flash all to slot a. Then change to slot B.
Fastboot --set-active=b then flash all to slot B. Probably Overkill but you'll for sure be stock. Then issue you're relock command to both critical and the regular bootloader one. For one you need to make sure your fastboot is current if it's not up to date you're probably going to have problems.
Edit. I would just send it back the way it is

fastboot unlock vs fastboot unlock critical

When I first got my device, everyone was talking about unlocking it with fastboot unlock.... Now I'm seeing several comments that fastboot unlock critical is needed.
Would someone be so kind as to share the difference, and the purpose for each of these?
I ran fastboot unlock back in October, and my device shows "OEM Unlocking" greyed out (bootloader is already unlocked)..
So now I'm wondering if I need to run fastboot unlock critical?
Thanks in advance...

I believe unlock_critical is necessary if you want to be able to flash updates manually..
"For Pixel 2 XL only: the critical partitions may also need to be unlocked before flashing. The unlock can be performed with this command, and should NOT be done on other devices:
fastboot flashing unlock_critical
If you are updating an older device, run this command:
fastboot oem unlock "
Above quote is from Google Factory Image page.

Since I already ran fastboot unlock, can I just run fastboot unlock_critical? Or do I need to do anything additional prior to running critical?

I've unlocked the ordinary bootloader first, then the bootloader_critical without any problems :good:
I got a replacement Pixel 2 XL and wanted to do unlock_critical from the outset. So, I enabled oem unlock, booted to bootloader, ran the command, the phone prompted me to unlock, which I did. I rebooted and it wiped my data. I thought I was all set. So, I setup my phone. I then went to root with Magisk and it told me I wasn't unlocked. I booted back into OS and it also showed that the bootloader wasn't unlocked. It's definitely a Google version (not Verizon). I rebooted into bootloader and ran the regular fastboot flashing unlock command and it wiped and rebooted to an unlocked bootloader. SO... what happened the first time? Has anyone seen this? Confused, I searched around online and found this link:
https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/unlock-bootloader-your-pixel-2-pixel-2-xl-0180707/
It says that when you send the fastboot flashing unlock_critical, you *also* need to send the fastboot flashing unlock command when you are prompted to confirm the unlock on the phone. Did anyone else have to do this? The instructions on XDA do not indicate this step and I don't see comments that others' phones still showed as locked when only using the unlock_critical command.
I tried booting into bootloader to run the unlock_critical command again and it says my bootloader is already unlocked, but there's no indication whether I have critical unlock or regular. I know I could lock it again and try to enter the instructions as provided on that site. However, I'd prefer not to reset my phone again.
Thoughts?

The bootloader_critical unlock has to be performed only if you want to flash the bootloader (e.g. when you flash a factory image), but, if you want to perform all the other operations, such as rooting, kernel flashing, etc., you have to unlock the ordinary bootloader, too.
So, these are the two Fastboot commands:
fastboot flashing unlock_critical (for bootloader flashing, you've already performed this)
fastboot flashing unlock (for all the other operations)
The request which appears on your phone, when you enter these two commands, is the same, and you have to allow the bootloader unlock in both cases :good:

failed remote: flashing is not allowed for critical partitions

Hi,
Apparently, I'm misunderstanding something. I'm trying to root my 2XL. I have unlocked the phone successfully, I believe. I have the notification screen at bootup. When I get to the task of flashing a factory image, I get the Failed notification, "FAILED (remote: Flashing is not allowed for Critical Partitions)". This occurs after ... writing 'bootloader_b'.
I was able to get Magisk installed but only 14.0 and I don't have root.
I haven't rooted anything in over 5 years so most of this stuff is pretty foreign.
Any advice would be welcome.

Unlock critical first then flash 8.1. Make a backup because this will wipe user data.
I am already unlocked and flashed 8.0 manually. I went to flash 8.1 today and got the OPs error. Are you saying that fastboot flashing unlock_critical will also wipe data? Damn that sucks if true.

Are you on Pie or Oreo? Is your platform-tools up to date? Have you tried different USB A to USB C cables and ports?

Without details from you, we can't help you. For example, are you on the latest update? What else did you try? What worked for you and what didn't? Seriously, we can't read your mind. We can't see your phone. We can't perform miracles. It's a bit tiresome to have to ask you for things you should have already provided so we CAN help you.
Since you haven't given any details for anyone to go on, all I can tell you is that depending on the version of Android you are running, the "unlock critical" command may no longer be required, in which case you will get a message when executing the command.
I did not notice this was the forum dedicated to Pixel devices, sorry. I re-did my message in the Oneplus Nord dedicated forum regarding my issue that, however, seems to be the same as the one people encountered here.
Here is the link if anyone feels like helping me : https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...itions-need-assistance-details-below.4274551/

Lord, you were fast.
Do I need to redo fastboot flashing unlock again before I flash the critical?
Also, my phone was on the latest 8.0.0. Would you recommend that I flash the new 8.1?

You'll need to read about your own phone. This thread is about the Pixel 2 XL. Different manufacturers tend to have different ways to unlock the bootloader.
Also, people who follow this thread are unlikely to know about OnePlus. Find a OnePlus-thread to ask for help.

How should I relock my bootloader on Motorola One Oaction?

So I successfully rooted phone, with TWRP, and Magisk. The only problem I'm having is 1) still getting safety net API error,
and
2) I don't know which command to use to relock the Boot loader.
It is likely that one will fix the other, or at least I think as Google is detecting my unlocked bootloader. I want to be able to re-un-lock it (I've been seeing forums filled people who can't unlock their bootloaders after locking it.

If your device is not 100% stock when you lock the bootloader it will not boot.

I have not seen this problem reported (much) as long as the device was full stock when relocked.

Thanks for that, So I managed to get it locked and got Google services and Pay working. With hide. (Small learning curve)

It seems to be a new problem. The the safety net check problem seems to be with magisk 22.1 (and 22.0 reportedly works but I'm too lazy to downgrade) as Hide works and I used alternative app to check safety net (SafetyNet Test) and it passed that. So everything is working as it should accept Magisk's internal safety net check tool.
Also, I finally learned how to add quotes, yay me!

Turned out it WAS the magisk build 22.1 was fixed now FOSS works. Thanks with the help about MagiskHide. Now I need a terminal emulator that requests root permission. Any suggestions?
