WiFi calling with Pixel 2 XL on Sprint? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hi. I just chatted with Sprint online asking if the pixel 2 XL that I'm going to receive at the end of this week, and activate on Sprint, will support WiFi calling. They confirmed that it will but could not provide a link to a list of phones that are supported at Sprint. Therefore I have my doubts. I think a lot of times these people who work the chat are "Yesmen", if you know what I mean?
Has anyone here activated their pixel 2 XL on Sprint? Is it wifi calling capable? Thank you.

I don't see a place to turn it on. Activated my 2XL last Wednesday morning. I've looked a few times. And I thought I read either on the Sprint Reddit or the Sprint Community that it's not supported. I can go to settings and search and type in wifi calling and it takes me to the Wi-Fi preferences page but then there's nothing listed.
Edit: See this as well. Still seems pertinent. https://www.reddit.com/r/Sprint/comments/6nqojq/sprint_support_wifi_calling_is_supported_for/

The Wifi calling option is available for T-Mobile. It's under wifi preferences (I find it easier to locate if I search for wifi in settings. )

Thanks for the responses, guys! henderjr, this is what I was afraid of. Thank you both for looking. I'm sort of basing my purchase of this phone on wifi calling so I'm stuck. I can't figure out how Sprint can get away with this....and no simultaneous talk/data, and survive next to the other service providers.
By chance does anyone else on Sprint have the option for wifi calling on their Pixel 2 XL??

I just chatted again and the agent is saying that wifi calling MAY be something that Sprint needs to activate on your account for it to show up. That's sounds weird to me but if you get a chance, you could call Sprint and see if they will turn it on for you. If you do, please report back, henderjr.
Certainly someone has had experience with this?

wifi calling not available
My wifi calling is activated on my account but I cannot find a place to turn it on in my Pixel 2 XL. I don't think it works on the Sprint network with this phone.

It is not enabled. the only thing that is enabled is Mobile Radio Power
The wifi calling option is grayed out and won't let me activate it.

Then you'll probably need to call Sprint support and get your phone properly provisioned. I've seen some at&t users having to do the same.

Sprint has Wi-Fi calling? I'm on stock and it's not provisioned on my device.

Well that's interesting. I'll have to take a gander at my account.

I just called Sprint and they said they cannot do anything about wifi calling because Google won't allow it. At least with Sprint, not sure about anyone besides Verizon.

Yeah Sprint blames a device and not themselves. I think the main thing is that they'll only support WiFi calling if it's sold in-store, not an unlocked phone.

Is there any way to enable Wi-Fi calling through rooted means? It seems like all we need to do is enable some features.

You need to enable Advanced calling to keep your 4G active when on a phone call.

Hmmm... I don't anything called Advanced Calling. I'm on T-Mobile.
Different carriers work differently. And I think some don't need "Advanced Calling" to do voice and data at the same time.

It's volte for you.
Also, having VOLTE enabled gives you the ability to go from WiFi calling to networking calling seamlessly. If wifi calling is disabled, the call will normally drop. If you have it enabled, and it still drops, you only have WiFi calling 1.0 however you shouldn't have that issue since you're posting in the g4 forum.
For anyone who's wondering: Advanced Calling is a free feature from Verizon. I checked with a phone rep and activated it on two different G4's without problems.
Also, this is supposed to be enabled by default, but it wasn't when I picked up my phone from Best Buy.

Verizon Advanced calling brings:
VOLTE
HD voice at a higher bitrate which is clearer when using the earpiece or built in speaker.
Offline Voicemail downloaded to device
Simultaneous voice and data using one radio instead of SVDO (which the phone doesn't have)
switchable to video chat while on call, either one or both users.
Dropped calls if you move out of a 4G area.
Thanks - just turned it on.

That's not true. Its a software feature. HTC 10 unlocked from htc.com support wifi calling. CM13 supports wifi calling.

The true findings have not been reported yet. CM13 has "unlocked" through what they call trickery, but has not been reported to work on all devices. This topic comes up at every unlocked phone thread I have seen. It most likely will work on devices that either were purchased at T-Mobile or that have radios with the ability to place Wi-Fi calls (any phone compatible with project-fi). There are reports of the nexus 5 on cm13 not being able to use this, but the 5x (with it's Wi-Fi calling ability) to use it. The HTC 10 has the ability to make Wi-Fi calls natively (the radio supports it) on android N, so using it on t-mobiles WiFi calling makes sense. But, until there is confirmation that the oneplus 3 has this ability, then I'm going to say it probably won't work. I could very well be wrong, but I can't find anything proving it works on all devices right now.

seems wifi calling is still in the settings menu, but it disabled as soon as you toggle it and leave. CM13 on the nexus 6p has working wifi calling, so the device itself doesn't have to come from t-mobile to work. Still hoping this is not radio firmware related. Waiting for a decent CM13 port to see if there's a chance there. If anyone has flashed one of the two cm13 ports on their op3, is the wifi calling option visible in the settings menu?
It is equipped, but 1+ has to pay T-Mobile to test it and approve for use. 1+ says they won't. Maybe we can remind them we want it.

It depends. I wouldn't pay for Wi-Fi calling and I'll be damned if I'm going to be forced to pay it through some price increase just to appease a minority. There are other ways to achieve Wi-Fi calling that doesn't involve carrier support like WhatsApp
How do you call a landline on whatsapp. How do you receive calls to your phone number on whatsapp. There really aren't many full VoIP wifi calling solutions available, and none of them are even as close in integration or as seamless as the native implementation. Cant speak for most carriers, but it's free on T-Mobile. I can relate to not wanting to pay for features you don't have use of, but the same could be said for volte calling or LTE in general.

Most likely not....I have the N6P and it doesn't for work for me. They basically refuse to provision an account with the enhanced services like wifi calling and volte if you didn't buy the phone from them. They are the only remaining carrier that I know of that doesn't allow use of the enhanced services when you BYOD.
I have a theory though.....if you get a phone that they sell that has the enhanced capabilities and have them turn the services on...then you swap out the Sim and put that Sim in your pixel 2xl it should work.....
I thought about doing it but I don't need wifi calling and the VoLte and enhanced sms only work if the person on the other end has the same carrier and capable phone and the features turned on....so didn't think it was worth it try try out.

It has to be a Google issue wether it's certifications or license issue. Someone much more in touch with how it all works would probably have a better answer. Purchased my wife's iPhone 8 unlocked (not carrier specific) from Apple directly not through AT&T. Her WiFi calling works. I'm also on the 6P and upgrading to Pixel 2XL even if it doesn't work? I guess I could try to put her sim into my phone when I get it.

Trust me...I have researched this extensively. I forgot to mention and serveral several rep confined this..... the only non att branded device they allow to use thier enhanced services is the iPhone bought straight from apple....no Android phones.
Yeah pixel 2 xl not working with enhanced voice. From what I heard the only reason it works with the iPhone is because Apple sets their own rules not the carriers. I think it's crap what they do. Verizon services usually work fine and tmobile works great too but coverage is spotty. I switched from T-Mobile to AT&T and love the coverage just miss being able to buy unlocked phones that will work with volte mainly don't really care for Wi-Fi calling.

If you call AT&T and get them to provision your IMEI for HD calling, it does indeed work.
EDIT: I should also add, your SIM card serial number last two digits (digits 9 and 10) MUST be greater than 27.
If they are not, you will need to get a new SIM card from AT&T.

Mine stays on LTE !
Go into the 4636 menu and see if it's provisioned. It was for me on vz. If it is, go into contacts and press on the 3 dots in the upper right corner. In the settings tab, there is a toggle for wifi calling.
I can confirm that VoLTE works. I contacted AT&T Tech Support this morning and specifically requested for them to update the IMEI # and provision VoLTE (HD Calling). I placed a test call and it sounded great, and stayed on LTE.
Additionally, I requested they Provisioned Wi-Fi calling. The Tech advised the Pixel 2 XL is not compatible but said he provisioned it on the line anyway. I don't think it's working though since it doesn't show that it's provisioned on the device information.

Ahhh ok. Yeah my top row on my SIM card ends with 27. I already had AT&T swap my IMEI on the SIM card since I moved it to my P2 XL from my old Pixel XL. I guess I'll have to ask them to provision VoLTE on my account now too.

I'm giving this a shot too considering they're advertising the welcoming of the Pixel 2 lineup. It's simply all about whitelisting so they should make this happen!
https://www.att.com/plans/google-pixel.html
The hardware obviously allows it. It's just a matter of AT&T adding the IMEI to their advanced calling lists.
Got them to add this to my account and I'm good to go. I wonder if we'll ever get WiFi calling

Verizon Advanced/HD Calling on Unlocked S9+

I currently have an Unlocked Galaxy S9+ directly from Samsung running on Verizon's network.
I can't seem to find a way to enable the HD Calling/Video Calling/Advanced Calling features.
Some rumors suspected if you installed the MyVerizon app it would enable the advanced calling menu, but that didn't work.
Is there any way to enable these features?
Is there a command through ADB to enable this?
Would I need root access?
EDIT: Model Number: SM-G965U1 - Snapdragon
No way to get Video and WiFi calling to work (yet), but go to Connections, then Mobile Networks and you can turn VoLTE Calls on or off, which is HD voice. It was there by default on my unlocked S9+ on Verizon. If you don't see it, you may need to add HD calling to your Verizon plan (it's free, but you have to login to the website and add it as a feature).

Yeah, I know that they support video calling, along with a ton of other apps, but there is a native video calling option.
They got it working on unlocked S8, using some of the APKs and CSC from the Verizon phone. See below:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...to/how-to-video-wificalling-unlocked-t3615027
Or just by flashing the whole Verizon firmware on the unlocked phone (kinda defeats the purpose of getting the unlocked phone):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...axy-s8-unlocked-version-wifi-calling-t3699806
So I'm hoping it's just a matter of time, as I also need the WIFI calling to work on my unlocked phone. I think that's what is needed in order to send texts over WIFI via the Verizon Message+ app, which is what I ultimately need when in poor signal areas (sending texts over WIFI, without getting a second number with Google Voice or asking people to install secondary apps like Allo/Duo). Or I could just switch to T-mobile I guess, where all these things work with the unlocked phone without the additional hassle.
Here is to hoping we can get wifi calling and native video calling working on the unlocked s9/s9+ phones for those of us on verizon.

I just got my unlocked S9 what do I need to do to get everything working on VZW I mean HD Calling, and video calling etc.? I've never owned Samsung Phones, I've always had unlocked bootloader HTC phones that I could do anything I wanted with. I don't know anything about Samsung accept "Odin". I still havn't put the sim card in cause I was thinking of returning the phone.
Thanks for the hint Dudeman456! I found WiFi Calling under system apps and went to its settings and activated its permissions. Now I can send text messages over WiFi using Verizon Message+ app (and not the included Messages app or Android Messages). I still don't have WiFi calling through the default phone app on S9. I wonder if there is a different phone app that I need for that purpose (Verizon Phone app?).
Same issue as my unlocked Note 8 I got from Sammy. You can enable video calling in the *#*#4636*#*# menu. You will not be able to activate WiFi calling though unless you flash the Verizon firmware. You also will not be able to use any Verizon features such as watching NFL games (but I think that is changing and won't be a Verizon exclusive) and premium visual voicemail. Really is a deal breaker for me.

What in the world does this mean "*#*#4636*#*# menu"????
All,
This is a KNOWN issue with Verizon.
I got my S9+ on Wed 3/14 from pre-order and could not get video calling to work. Went to Verizon store on Sat 3/17 preparing to wage war with them. The Verizon tech stopped me in my tracks and said it's already known. An email sent from corporate to all verizon stores indicating the problem with video calling. It is an issue with Samsung software which they are "diligently" working to correct and will push an update soon.
Notice this.. go to either MyVerizon app or the website and login. then go to devices/manage devices...then go controls then to adjust service blocks and you will see the video calling is blocked and cannot be unblocked. Apparently this is done for "our own good" until Samsung fixes the issue.
No date from the tech on when a fix will be issued.
DONT try anything crazy to enable video calling..just be patient and wait for the fix. My S9+ is unlocked too and i was assured that video calling will be enabled once a fix is issued.

That is odd. I am using my G965U1 on Sprint and my Wi-Fi Calling app is in the regular app drawer with everything else. I did not expect it to work, since it is Sprint, but it did. The Wi-Fi Calling app was available before placing a sim card inside.

I don't think it will unblock. If you didn't buy the VZW branded phone you most likely won't get video calling. I assumed this from the start. I spent a good portion of the day speaking with a VZW 2nd level support engineer supervisor with 20 years experience. He asked is there anything else that could be done besides unblocking video calls to make me happy, because that at this time it is impossible as the phone is not a VZW phone. Look in you phone profile on their website, does a picture of your phone show up? My profile is blank, that means the phone is not in their system of phones, even though I flashed the full VZW package with bloatware and all after first a full reset. My Phone has VZW splash screen and all the advanced calling menus, in about phone it says SM-G960U, but that block cant be removed. Maybe I screwed up somewhere and alerted them by booting with a sim card in? Maybe they flagged my IMEI? I don't know but the rep said point blank they can't unblock video calling on that line, and unlocked phones are not supported.
Are you all seeing LTE+ (carrier aggregation) on your Verizon S9 devices? I'm in Vegas and my device appears to sit on B13 (700mhz) and does not hand off anywhere else.

My S9 does not show LTE or 4G. I think there are a lot of bugs still.

That's a whole other issue then. Is your device an unlocked device?

Yes - unlocked on Verizon.
You need the right apps for Wi-Fi calling and some in framework. I don't own a s9 but that's what you need to do to get it to work. Along with some csc edits

Three Super-Voice VOLTE

Hello, does anyone know if Three's super-voice will work on a Pixel 3 XL purchased from Google directly rather than from Three? Three list the Pixel 3 as supported for VOLTE but they only do the 64gb models and currently have no plans to offer the 128gb which is what I need.
I am hoping that it is not the Three ROM which enables this feature. Would someone be able to confirm please?
Thank you

These days it's not the ROM on the phone which enables these features it's mainly the network. So if the network allows this feature by putting their sim into the phone will give you the option to select this feature. I'm on EE but got an unlocked version pixel 3 XL as soon as I take the SIM out of the phone the feature disappear from the settings.
Not sure this would help but I got my pixel 3 XL from Vodafone directly and WiFi calling and HD calling is working fine. I don't think any pixel phones have a "branded" firmware so these features are baked in. But either way order it online or over the phone and you can test and if it does not work just return the device back under 14 days rule.
Thank you for the information. I hope it is the same on Three as it is on EE for you. Maybe someone on Three can confirm for me before I commit to my purchase ?
It doesn't work with three uk
I'm having to use their three in touch app on the device. I've got pixel 3 XL 64gb version

Really, that is so annoying. I was hoping that as the Pixel 3 is on their list of devices which are supposed to work with Super-Voice then it would work like the others mentioned on here without their own Rom. Have you tried contacting them to ask why it isn't working as the device is listed on their website as supported? Have you checked the VOLTE settings or are they missing in the menu?
yeh, you can test any phone to see if wifi calling is available
switch on airplane mode
switch on wifi
if you can still make calls via the dialer then you have wifi calling, if you can't then you don't
if you try this with pixel 3 xl on three it tells you to turn mobile on
Also noticed though when I did make a call at home yesterday while on 4G it showed HD next to the call timer

I am on 3 UK, bought my 128gb 2XL unlocked from CPW and it does 4g HD calling no problem. WiFi Calling however requires use of the three app.

No sorry I am not referring to using Wifi calling. I know the Three in Touch App will work, what I am referring to is Three's SuperVoice service which allows your phone to make calls using 4G otherwise known as VOLTE.

Thank you for this info. I am really confused now as walkerx said he tried it and it didn't work lol. Do you get the settings in the Network menu for VOLTE as seen here? https://www.tech-recipes.com/wp-con...-Internet-Mobile-Network-Advanced-Calling.png

No WiFi calling does not work with three uk, you must use their outdated app that's not been updated for 2 years.
4G supervoice is different and uses the 4G network and you can tell with the HD symbol that appears you are on their 4G sulervoice.
I have asked three about wifi calling and they reckon they are working with Google to get it working. Tbh it is Three that nerd to sort out their end as it is a common format and configuration.
From Three
we know Wi-Fi calling is important, unfortunately the Pixel 3 doesn't support this right now ? we’re working hard with Google to have this sorted asap though so watch this space ? >DD

I can confirm on three UK you 100% get HD calling, but as previously stated you don't get WIFI calling, you need to use the app for that. I can screenshot an HD call icon if you want

Yes please, I would like a screenshot.
I have a Pixel 3 XL and have never seen 4G calling work, I always observe the phone dropping the "4G" and moving to "H / H+" next to the signal strength icon when a call is made.
I do live in a 4G area

As far as I'm aware 4G calling (or '4G supervoice' as they like to call it) only works on band 20 with Three. If you're in an area where there are bands of 3G signal available, it will use them. If you're somewhere where there is only 4G on band 20, then it'll work. - This signal travels further and penetrates buildings better - so is there when other signals aren't.
All the other operators seem to allow 4G calling on all bands of frequency now. Three only allows it on band 20.
I assume at some point they'll roll it out to all their 4G signal.
Was hoping January update may enable Three wifi calling but it has not.
Can confirm that volte is working on three and pixel 3xl.
I've just made a call and it stayed on 4G. First time I'm actually taking notice so not sure if this has always happened or just after January update.
Now we need wifi calling. Who do we approach about this?

VoLTE has been working for a good while now - if not since launch?
I was hoping WiFi calling would appear after the update too. All they've said on that is that they're 'working with Google' to get it out as soon as possible.
I don't see why it's so hard for them, it's on the iPhone, the S8, the S9 and all the other big brand phones they sell.
I want WiFi calling, but I'm not as bothered about it as I was about 4G calling- VoLTE gives me a usable signal at home where there was none before.
I've now seen a couple of calls where "HD" appears in thr phone app next to the call timer.
It appears, to me, to only work on other calls to mobiles in the three network.
So I'm not experiencing a true VoLTE experience as I understood it could be.
It's sad when my wife's phone which is a Huawei P20 pro from the Vodafone network (unlocked) supports WiFi calling on 3 network!
Come on Three/Google.
