Pixel 2 XL poor audio quality when record video? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Im surpised that not many people talk about this. I guess because of the screen issue. Imo, this is another big issue specially on 2 xl. The audio is terrible with bad noise cancellation. Pixel 2 doesnt seem as bad as 2 xl though.

I wonder when this issue will get the attention it deserves. It's the only thing that might make be return the phone. Especially now that the display is under a 2 year warranty. I've got 15 days to figure out if it's a deal breaker for me.

Check my video. Seems great to me. 4k recording as well. Not sure if that makes a difference lol.

Horrible
Damn....it's actually REALLY poor. Like- VERY BAD. I was at a show @ Tropicana Atlantic City over weekend and although it was a loud venue, I was at the next to last seat very far away from main speakers. The sound is VERY bad. I looked at the audio properties- it's recording mono(!!!!???) @ 96 kb/s. What the actual *uck?!
Sample- some very weird crap with the sound going on. I was holding the phone steady and not covering the microphone or moving at all. Apologies if you don't like OAR....lol

Yeah...I saw that. I can only hope they bump it to at least 128 or maybe 160 kb/s would be even better. Can't this thing record stereo!? There are 2 mics on it, you would think that would be set out of the box. I'm REALLY hoping their patch isn't just decreasing the recording levels.

For whatever reason Apple and Google are doing mono recording with videos. Pretty sad.

I have to say that I am extremely disappointed in the audio recording quality of the Pixel 2 XL. I go to many concerts and often record them. Last night I recorded a set for the first time on the Pixel 2 XL and it was horrendous. Could barely make up any of the sound, the bass is totally distorted and clips the audio. All of my previous phones (Pixel XL, S6, S7) blew the Pixel 2 XL out of the water when it came to audio recording. I really hope this gets resolved as it's a pretty big issue for me.

I'll be returning mine due to this issue alone. I make a ton of home videos with my family and recorded audio is very important. It really has me bummed. I love everything else about this phone. Display issues don't bother me. Maybe they will fix the audio issue with a patch but that will be aftery my return period had expired. I won't take that risk. I'll be giving the LG V30 a trial run. Then the oneplus 5T. Maybe by then Google will correct this issue and I'll pick up the 2XL again.

The November patch made quite the improvement!

Ive returned mine already. Screen was really bad but this issue was a deal breaker for me since i got 2 xl for camera. Its got amazing pictures but video is not good. Instead i bought iphone. If google can fix this i am willing to buy it again though hope its sooner.

I installed the patch last night and did a quick check. There was some improvement but it still has an unnatural sound. My V30 arrives today. 2XL is going back to Google.

Looks like Oreo 8.1 solved this issue, according to some developer preview reports.

I find the slightly raspy sound is better than the quiet recording on other phones. At least you can hear people on videos on this phone.
As for concerts, the smaller pixel 2 handles this perfectly, so I would say an update will fix it.

Pixel XL trade-in for Pixel 2

Hello! I currently have a Verizon (bootloader locked) Pixel XL 128GB and am on the fence of trading this in for an unlocked Pixel 2 (not XL) 64GB. I believe I can fully utilize the $100 store credit and that home mini could be used as gifts for friends/family. In short, my upgrade costs is $115.
So I'm just wondering, is the upgrade worth it? How are people enjoying their phones now? I've read numerous reviews and reasons to switch but this still puts my on the fence. I think the main reason being the resolution downgrade. I love watching movies/tv shows on my XL and it might be the deal breaker.
Let me know what you think and thanks for reading!
Are you going from an XL to a regular pixel 2? You might not like going down in screen size.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
Yeah, I was thinking the same but is the processor speedup worth it? I also might consider the Pixel 2 XL.

This is good advice. I have a 2xl and it is awesome. Controls my tv, stereo, lights, home temp, navigates my car, does my christmas shopping, plays music on phone or home or mini or car or denon 5.1 klipsch/polk audio rock & roll system or any of my bluetooth speakers, keeps me up on the news, puts me to sleep, wakes me up, takes very awesome pictures & saves them all, no matter how many I take. I've always been reluctant to buy a new phone because every new release was missing something. The new pixel is a nice investment, not missing anything at least for me.
And insane battery life, I've never had a phone that sleeps for 9 hours and stays over 97%
My 2xl stays at 100% and can easily last me 2 days moderate to heavy use

I went from a Pixel XL to the 2XL then a Note 8 and now the Pixel 2. I chose the 2 over the XL and 2XL because the screen is super nice. As for the Note the camera is just not that good in comparison. The smaller size hasn't bothered me much at all, the screen is crisp, vibrant and readable. Performance wise the Pixel 2 and 2XL win hands down. I would do the trade.
Go for all of the above! ??
Thanks guys I really appreciate the advice! Most likely I'll trade in!

Anyone used both pixel xl and pixel 2 XL thoughts please?

Has anyone used both, any real life differences between the 2 phones. Currently have a pixel xl and it's been a smooth experience so now wandering how much more better the new pixel xl 2 would be.
Bluetooth is a huge improvement. Pixel XL Bluetooth just sucks, very broken.
Screen is a decent size increase which I really like. Black crush is a little worse but liveable. Off angle blue exists but is liveable.
Battery life is amazing.
Stereo front facing speakers are nice.
Camera keeps getting better.
Fastest phone I've ever used.

Was mildly interested, but I don't like their track record of software updates plus recent missing crypto libraries and discoveries of old software versions in current 8 release. Tells me there are shortcuts under the hood.
You should check out the HTC U11+ though. It was almost the Pixel 2 XL. Great hardware but won't be in US. No clue what HTC software is like these days though, I just recently started browsing them.

Not that I have ever seen. I even set animation scales to .5 and it still doesn't stutter switching between apps, just goes faster.
HTC has been "in trouble" for years. Business decisions it seems, by all accounts the flagships have been really good for past three years. Just so has everyone else too.
Course everyone says Samsung has fixed their lag issues this/last year. Not sure I believe it but I might at least try one in 18'.

Wasn't aware that oneplus was behind the curve in software updates. I found the opposite to be true, especially when beta releases were offered in two flavors (h20 and 02). Not to mention any weakness in the official release we're more than offset with a vibrant dev community.
But then again I was only actively monitoring the oneplus forums during their oneplus 2 and 3 product cycles.
Are things different now?

It's not that they are behind(which would be fine), but that details get missed like they are rushed (bad). I can't find the thread about nougat libraries or something still present in Oreo, likely not a big deal anyway but why?

I'm with them on this one, there is a solid history of partition changes messing up phones.
Anyway my interests moved on and I've never touched a OnePlus, try it is you want.

I think at the moment if price isn't an issue the oneplus in spite of all the shody bussiness they get up to is a much better device. The headphone jack, the extra ram makes it a very worthwhile contender indeed.

Pixel 2 XL or OnePlus 6

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've been on these forums. Currently on my Nexus 6P but looking to upgrade.
I've loved the use of stock & clean android. As well as regular updates and a decent camera. I'm interested in the pixel 2 XL but have seen a lot of bad press about issues.
What is the general consensus on the phone? Would the OnePlus give me a similar android experience? It's supposed to be getting a decent camera too and cost £499. Was interested in people's views!
Cheers!
The only real difference is if you want a really good rom community or if camera is more important.
It's simple If you want better camera with some rom support or root. Get the google 2xl..if you want rom support then go one plus 6

There's a thread on this somewhere on XDA if I'm not mistaken. The opinions I've seen are kinda like the ol Ford vs Chevy debate back in my day. The best summation I can give would be.....
If you want fast, regular security updates and arguably the best camera out there, then the P2XL is the call.
If you want more development, larger ram capacity, and an OK-good camera, then the OP6 is what your looking for.
Again, this is a very short synopsis

Along with horrible QC, the avg replacement device being 4 (not for blue shift either) lol(I'm on replacement #8). It's no longer the best camera. Stereo speakers are pretty meh, stock has it's pros but a crap ton of cons. Op gets fast updates as well lol, squeeze google assistant isn't a deal breaker. Google photos is like 3.00 a month for 100gb, the "free" isn't that impressive. No doubt pixel 2 xl isn't the obvious choice anymore lol. Also OP is 300.00 less lol and better build quality.

Well I bought 1 and I'm happy, there's blue shift but hopefully not so much. To me it's the best on HDR and that's why I bought it too. Well the best stereo speakersare those from ipx and i8p , and to me those on pixel are ok . Fast updates it's on the same week to me. Squeeze isn't a deal breaker but a nice feature. No Google photos are free and the full quality. Don't get me wrong I got op5t too,
But to me the pixel it's much "smarter" then the others mobiles

Interesting to see some of these replies! Pretty much the debate I'm having in my head haha. I love my Nexus as it's as great now as it was on day one... No bloatware and up until Oreo 8.1 fast updates.
I think for me the camera is hugely important. If one plus can release a camera that is better than the pixel 2 XL ... Then that may do it for me! Good to here they have fast(ish) updates too. Rumours are OnePlus 6 will have a triple digit dxomark I think!
Im the guy who keep buying a new phone in 2 or 3 months, I switched back and forth from any flagahips on the martket but there is always a few little things that keep bothering me to change a new phone until i got pixel 2 xl last week and its the perfect one.

Pixel 2 XL now
All of the above pros for the Pixel XL 2... it's a gold mine of goodies!
both phones are great, but the pixel 2 XL is definitely a bit better in several ways
Loved my Nexus 6p and if it wasn't for the battery issues I'd probably still have it however I do really like the pixel. I don't really see the issues that have been reported. If you can afford both phones then the pixel is the one for me

Dxo mark rating doesn't really mean that much it is same as running a performance benchmarks like antutu etc
See, pixel has only one camera and still scored the highest but all these phones s9+ p20pro have 2 or 3 camera henceforth the triple digit figures
If pixel had secondary camera such as telephoto then it would also had a 100+ score
If you want to compare the dxo mark ratings then compare the main lens rating on their site
P20 pro vs pixel 2xl on youtube evry video in the end says they would go with pixel because it is consistent

I think the same and all the videos that I saw the HDR it's always better on pixel 2,
Better portrait on the market
Better HDR on the market
2nd or 3rd on low light, even though I still think pixel got it better.
Better color accuracy
Etc etc
The only one thing that the pixel camera doesn't do it better, it's the zoom , well that's normal with only one camera
---------- Post added at 08:10 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:08 AM ----------
I use to change roms every week but now I do prefer stability and security.
One plus got 8.1 and I'm already on 9.0 that's a huge difference, and Will be always like that.
If oneplus 6 support VZW...bye bye Pixel 2 XL. The oneplus is a quality, low profile/thin bezel phone with great dev support from their company and online on XDA. They won't say if they are going to support VZW yet, but heard they are looking for a US partner in the coming 6 months. The Pixel 2 XL is so bulky, thick top/bottom space, and the features of the OS are lagging behind a few things that the OnePlus Beta 5T phone currently has that the 6 will have baked in, like fling/nonav bar gestures like iPhone. They've had it for months in the beta, all the apps are scaled to use the screen space without the bar...not such thing in the standard Android/Pixel OS builds, and then, not done at all or very well. I know devs try their best, but it isn't proper.
Only thing about OnePlus is the camera, next one should be much better hopefully. But then again, unless it works on Verizon...doesn't really matter, and my choices are limited for modding/bootloader unlocking etc..to the Google phone really, or HTC.
Thanks very much for all the advise guys! Great to see arguments for both phones haha!
Currently can get the Pixel 2 XL for £600 from carphone warehouse. The OnePlus 6 is likely to be £500.
I think the make or break for me is going to be the camera. I'll wait and see what the camera is when the OnePlus 6 is officially announced on 16th may. If the camera is better that may sway it for me, if not I'll get the pixel 2 XL!

OEMs for the displays...

has any info leaked out on who is making the screens for the pixel 3 and pixel 3 xl? last year wasn't it LG for the XL and Samsung for the pixel 2? does that trend continue this year? I know LG needs to step up their game on many fronts for the mobile displays, especially OLED tech, but wondering if Samsung is making either display for the Pixels. the power consumption for Samsung OLED is great and less likely to burn in.
Lg again... Apparently
Where do you get apparently from? Many reasons Google should go for Samsung on the XL version but corporations and their pennies. If I had image retention right after I bought the phone, especially not using high brightness often, I would not be a returning customer. LG LCDs apparently are very bad too. You should see the ridiculous burn in and image retention on the V20. That kind of IR is hard to do with LCD but apparently LG aced it.

I honestly don't think Samsung has time right now to build another screen for another phone. They are building s9, s9+, note 9 and all the iPhone screens right now. I'm not sure they can throw a pixel device into the mix now. I'd be willing to bet they are behind right now on screens

Samsung is an absolutely super mega insanely massive company. I'm sure they have the resources to make screens for their phones plus many others.
techradar was one site that reported that the pixel 3xl would have an lg screen. That is an old rumor, haven't heard otherwise though. I'm betting it will be a good one who ever makes it. We'll know soon.

They said in the event that the screen would self-optimize for better viewing at all angles. Some other thing they said about it too. Hoping that means the screen will be a lot better than the 2 xl.

Didn't they also think the previous/current pixel screen was great also?

You are correct. The smaller pixel 3 does not have the shift. It funny how everyone who says the PXL3 does not have the shift is not angling the phone while on a screen with a white background so you can check the blue shift !! Thats the most telling way to see the blue.
There was no shift so how do you know there's still a problem?

Query to those who upgraded from OG Pixel

Hey fellas. I have been using a Pixel XL 2016 since December, 2016. While the phone is good (and I just got a brand new device as replacement from Google because mine had a faulty mic.) I would like to use something which is better. And while Pixel 4 will be released soon, the lowest priced upgrade I can see is up to the Pixel 2 (XL or otherwise).
Now I was reading the GSMA review and I was disappointed to see that despite having stereo speakers the Pixel 2 has a low loudspeaker output decibel. Well I live in a country where loudspeaker does matter as there's too much chatter so a loud loudspeaker would be preferred. As it is I have never been able to hear the ringtone from my OG while outside, now I see the Pixel 2s have even lower ringtone dB! Have you guys found a problem with that? Please don't care to comment those who don't receive any phone calls.
Secondly I saw that Dpreview said that the Pixel 2 has inferior video quality to Pixel 1 (when the site's built-in comparison tool was used), is that true? And as for the still camera, how much better is Pixel 2's camera over the OG's, be in day time or night time? I thought OIS should make a big improvement, does that hold true in real life?
If there's anything else then please let me know. I just don't want to upgrade just for the sake of it. I know I will get a better SoC (821 to 835), better battery life, at least one more year of official support, but at the same time the display will be ****e, the video quality issue remains concerning, and then there is the loudspeaker loudness concern as well.
Those who have used the OG Pixel long term and then moved on to the Pixel 2, kindly bother to comment, I would appreciate it. I will be using the Pixel 2 for at least couple of years.
