Who received a Pixel 2 XL with absolutely no blue shift?
from everything i've read that phone doesn't exist, they all have it to some degree. seems like everyone agrees that the shift varies and photos seem to show that. But oddly enough i have yet to see a single photo/video that has two P2XL next to each other having a different tint, so i'm sorta skeptical any are different and the variation i photos can be explained by room lighting and or white balance of the camera taking the photo of the screen.
Ive compared mine to two others in real life and all were identical in shift (which in my opinion is really bad).
Mine is very minimal to the point I can't notice it unless I look really hard which I don't.

That is amazing as most appear to have it. Mine isn't what I would call intense blue but it is a distracting thing starting at 5 degrees and I think I will return it. Love the phone if they hadn't of cheapened out on displays.

I agree;. I wish the went with Samsung screens but since they invested a billion dollars in LG that isn't going to happen.
I constantly run with "night mode" on, I really see no blue shift with it active.

For OLED screens...
If you get the blue shift try the oreo colorizer, it made it so I don't even notice it till the phone is almost at 90 degrees.

I didnt see any different w/ oreo colorizer and my blue shift (does make the colors pop more).
I hardly notice it on mine. It's not there until it hits a certain degree angle, as another stated already, then it's pretty minor. It honestly looks like the screen is just getting a tad darker, like I've seen on other phones (like my s7 edge)... And it doesn't show for everything. I don't see it in videos or pictures or really anything that's not a white or very light color. Honestly, let's be real, how often do you look at your phone from an angle lol.
I can see a slight blue shift when angled but it doesn't bother me because I don't look at my phone from an angle. And the slight blue tint is only obvious if you're looking for it specifically or looking at photos with alot of white color.

off-axis shifting is a hardware issue, not a software one.. no amount of apps or updates will change it.

I look at mine at an angle all the time. If it is sitting at a desk in front of you, it is at an angle. A blue angle, in this case.

Absolutely yes, hardware issue. Google cheapened out on panels with LG. Someone should be fired for allowing these to be sold with these issues. I can't imagine anyone who cares (in Quality Control or product manager) signing off on these as to release to public.

Lol. I thought about that, but, if I'm not holding my phone in my hand, I'm not doing anything like reading something, or FB, or whatever, so I'll really never have the blue hue problem. Videos and such don't seem to have the tint problem for me.

Mine color shifts at a slight angle when watching videos. Straight on it is OK.
I don't notice any at all because I don't look at my phone sideways like an idiot.
Mine is incredibly subtle, especially when compared to the pictures and videos I saw prior to getting it three days ago. Additionally, you have to view it from an extreme angle (greater than 45°) before you noticed it, but again, it's subtle. I'd say the effect is more a cooler look to the screen than a blue tint. The blue does eventually appear and become obvious, but it's only when you're looking at it from almost directly from the side.
In my regular use with the phone, I never notice the color shift - even when viewing the mostly white screen in Chrome.

I have a diagonal line that runs along the width of the display it runs at a slight angel, it can be only seen with the display set a its lowest setting and running a black image in a very dark room. I have taken the phone back to three (solihull) who after 3 goes of trying to see it are aware of the problem and acknowledged it. They checked their demo phone which didn't have the problem. They have contacted their Samsung rep who I am awaiting a call from.
Does anyone have a similar problem?
This is normal with AMOLED displays.
the thing is, my GS2 doesnt have this "problem" on the lowest screen brightness.

That said, i've already accepted the fact that everyone else has some variation of this "issue" but im more curious on what the Samsung rep has to say about it. I'm also curious if its more visible on some devices as opposed to others.
I put my brightness on a static settings so it doenst effect me much (I can see it a bit on dark grey backgrounds) but i'm just imagining people who use auto brightness cause there's NO way you can miss it on whites/greys

It may be a known issue, but that doesn't mean it's acceptable. I've not experienced any issues like this on either of my Fascinates. I'd certainly return mine if there were any screen issues.

I understand the artefacts you mean but this is a single bar about 3mm thick its not dead pixels like the three store suggested otherwise it wouldn't matter about the brightness it almost looks like something is pressing gently against the screen. I have tried to photograph it but my camera/me are not the best.

yeah its pretty much like that
it's like...grainy with weird colours. I wouldnt say i see any thick LINES, instead it reminds me of throwing paint on a wall and letting it slide down. I'll try and take a picture tonight with some high res camera so you guys can hopefully see what im talking about
unfortauntely its not so easy for me to get a return since im in canada and i bought mine through Handtec in the UK - im pretty sure RMA-ing is a huge hassle and wait, plus im not sure if i have to pay for the shipping

Its not like that on mine.
lol i took that pic with my G2x, its not as extreme as that in real life.
An OLED (organic light-emitting diode) is a light-emitting diode (LED) in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compounds which emit light in response to an electric current.
It;s Organic. Each row of organic pixels may have slightly different tolerances to voltage than the next, hence you get dark and lighter rows varying to different degrees on different screens.
By all means take a chance and see if a replacement is all the same tolerances with no darker or lighter lines or if it has lots of them and looks like a striped screen. I don't think its a "defect" as such, its just a "characteristic" of AMOLED. If they wanted Samsung could measure the tolerance of each OLED to a very accurate level and there would be no dark or light lines on any screen. It would be very expensive though, so they fall into a catagory of acceptable or not.
Thats just my opinion by the way.
edit: Im actual glad so many others are questioning this too. I feel less pedantic now. lol

Bear in mind that any replacement you get may in fact have a worse screen. I was lucky when I got my replacement phone (replaced due to volume bug, nothing to do with the screen) and my screen was luckily better. You may not be so lucky.

well i just got my nexus today and as expected noticed a small transparant line running down with screen with auto brightness / low brightness. So i turned it of and manualy set to around 55 60% defintly cant notice it now just bummer cant use auto brightness .... will have to see how battery holds out like this as i luv this phone
I got my G3 today at T-Mobile at 10am. I noticed two things. Once the text in Google Apps, and on websites, where there is a light grey backgroud behind the text it makes the text look more like pre HD days and very over sharpened... Also the screen has a ton of faint 'grayish' lines going through it (it almost makes the entire screen look grainy...) which I usually only notice on white screens or areas with light colors...... I am wondering if anyone else is seeing this at all? So far I'm unimpressed with this screen and I kind of regret trading in my G3. I'm thinking about running back to T-Mobile and see if their display model shows the same things but I wanted to see if anyone else noticed any of those issues above?

I don't have any of these issues at all.. Screen is crisp and bright and I can't see the digitizer at all.. Love this phone! White version here.
I think the color is pale comparing with other phones.
I'm curious if changing the dpi will help with the over sharpening.

Like he said, it's the over-sharpening algorithm they have applied to the display. You'll either get used to it or you won't or.. Some update will make it optional. It hurts more than it helps, but that's what LG chose to go with, so..

I notice the over sharpened text but its not as bad as some guys on here make it seem. I can most definitely live with it.

Don't worry, mine is the same way also..
First thing I noticed right away when I received the phone, almost looks like pentile matrix amoled which I despise.
The thing I enjoy most about IPS LCD especially high resolution ones are the smooth soothing crisp look of text. What LG has done with this oversharpening crap is a travesty, whoever gave the green light to this should be fired. Text on white looks okay, but add in any light background and it becomes a mess, like a low resolution jagged mess.

I'm know now that the text over-sharpening is the problem with the text on grey and light colored backgrounds and that it's happening with everyone. But the only thing that really bothers me is that I can see all of the little lines of the digitizer of the screen on white background and some light blues. Its very subtle but now that I noticed it I cannot unsee it. The two T-Mobile displays both do it at the store so I guess I'm stuck with it... It's kind of lame because it makes some things look grainy and ugly...

Since I tried it at Corp Store, I will take a pic to show.
Generally you have to move the circle in between 1st and 2nd center icons and you should get a bit better color (I tested it with my Note 3 and Note 8).
In addition, I realize the "over sharpening" text issue when the font is wrapped by "shadow". When it shows in webpage, email...etc, the text looks OK. It's like Note 2 when playing video in small window.
I just exchanged it, and then adjusted the color to your suggestion. I also set the animation speed to x.5 and its blazing fast. Screen is much better so its all good. Battery life is better on this one too
That Accessibility setting is meant for colorblind and/or nearly blind people to adjust their screen so that they can actually see it... probably a law that requires it. It is *not* a screen calibration tool and not a solution for fixing an off-color or bad screen.
I have examined some different models in different corp stores (DeKalb Ave, Fulton Street, Madison Ave/42nd, Broadway near City Hall, Court Street, 86th Street near Bay Parkway) and found that:
I compare my Note 3 and used Chrome to open Google.com (desktop view).
The screen looks reddish has more "overly shading" fonts on standby problem, but
The screen looks cooler (blueish tint) looks brighter and "normal".
In addition, the model has "cooler" screen runs cool.

I'm on Verizon and I have the same exact issue with my screen. With the default wallpaper you can see the faint 'grayish' vertical lines, and the over-sharpening can be seen on the Since some people are saying they don't have any issues, I'm wondering if it's a device specific issue and should exchange for another one...
This is literally the only thing I don't like with this phone.
This being my first smartphone, I apologise if this question has been asked before and for generally being a noob, but hoping a recent answer would clarify the situation for me.
I know IPS screens for any type of device/product are prone to backlight bleeding, the reason I have a VA pc monitor. I did consider an amoled screen, but for the price, £300 and my intended uses, the G4 was the best option presently.
Without another phone to test it against and no photographic evidence for you guys my description is the best I can do. There are two points on the screen where I believe there is some bleeding present, but this is still subjective. The first is the along the top edge, where there is a very thin lighter strip of possible bleed, maybe an issue with the panel, where the info bar is normally present, that is lighter than then rest of the screen. I can notice it whilst watching full screen video, not always, when the bar is absent. The second is more minor, there are two spots on the bottom of the panel, either side and just above the LG logo where there is some bleed leakage, but minor.
I guess I'm asking is this common and worth the risk of replacing, or are the odds are I might get the same again?

Some light bleed top and bottom is going to be somewhat inevitable. On my phone it is noticeable if you look for it, but not too bad.
I have another issue with the panel itself not being uniform. The top of the panel (near the earpiece) is all bright and possibly on the touch of the yellow side of white. Lower down the screen towards the bottom left it goes towards pink.
Is yours OK in this regard? It is most noticeable with the phone in landscape reading forums like this.
I have a replacement phone arriving tomorrow to compare it to.

The uniformity on mine seems okay - using your suggested test on 50% brightness on this webpage, I have none of the other issues you mentioned (pink or yellowing), apart from that bright strip along the entire top edge under the front facing camera that is brighter and slightly washes out any colour/images on that edge.

Thanks. Another place it is noticeable on mine is in Gmail or any notification on the notification bar in landscape. Almost as if one side of the screen is a different colour to the other although you won't notice in photos or videos. Only on white/grey backgrounds.
It sounds like all you are seeing is the backlight bleeding through, this will happen to some extent on all LCD's. I tried screen test on the play store and on the black background test I can see a faint bar of greyish light right at the top of the screen. Unless you go AMOLED I think any replacement phone is going to look the same.

Hopefully a replacment will be an improvement for you.
I'll see a few days how this bleed works out for me. Would get an amoled, but the prices plus a lack of microsd card limit any options for me. Since testing lcd monitors, always try to avoid them now because of the panel issues that are inherent to this tech process.

There's been a few good deals on the Galaxy S6 (around £325 unlocked) but all the reports of poor signal puts me off (and of course there's no micro SD). The G4 seems very strong in this regard, only phone I've ever had that works in a few of the blackspots round here (all other phones report no service) Some reviews even mention that it is a bit deaf.
AMOLED isn't without its own issues though.

All true, I've heard complaints about screen burn in on with amoled screens, some mentioned in the reviews of the Nexus 6P.

I don't think screen burn is as bad as it used to be. I had pretty bad screen burn pretty quickly on a Galaxy Nexus.

Yes, definitely around the middle-right-lower portion, pinkish presence even in that picture. You still within the retailer warranty/return period? If so, don't hesitate to return it.

It's not that obvious in real life, looks worse in the picture to be honest but I still can't live with it. It'll be going back when the replacement arrives tomorrow. Hopefully the replacement is fine otherwise I won't know what phone to get to replace it with. I can't get over how good the signal is now on it.

Replacement is way better. It's definitely a keeper. Has the slight 'light bleed' that you mentioned in your OP but the panel is at least completely uniform.

This is one issue that actually affects my user experience. I'm trying to decide between an RMA and switching to a Pixel 2. If black crush is a universal problem, I'll go with the latter but if it only affects a few devices I'd rather RMA and stick with the P2XL. Chime in, black crush/screen bleed - do you have it?

I seem to be finding mixed messages on this. Some report this is not an issue on the Pixel 2 and only the XL. I only have an n of 1 for each device - my P2XL has it, my wife's P2 does not. Ultimately, this is what I am trying to figure out - how widespread is the issue, do I play the lottery or exchange for something new or just keep my original XL, though I'd certainly miss the camera and active edge.

Low brightness, dark videos and images, basically any near black colors get "crushed" to black. I was watching The Croods on a flight the other day and there is a dark scene near the end of the movie where I couldn't make out what was going on because it was so bad. Any dark area of the screen went completely black and/or black and very pixelated. There are a few test images in a thread on Reddit to see if you have it, I'll see if I can link it.

Ok. I only got phone today it's been on auto brightness during the day so haven't noticed anything yet

Ok I do have it. See if on low brightness. Pretty annoying. I noticed it's slot worse with night mode on
I found blacks at low brightness to be quite extreme as well, I'm fairly certain this is something that could be recalibrated in software but I doubt that Google will do anything about it

It's probably the screen. I don't find it to bad.. but extreme with night mode on

See I don't think it is necessarily the screen as the display has a really high range of greys, so I think it could be fixed to some extent. The bigger problem I have is the ridiculous amount of black smear at low brightness. I never had anything like that on my Nexus 6P, it is dreadful.

Yeah same. I've got a decent unit at normal day usage. Once it gets to lower brightness and night mode is not very nice. The black crush is slot worse with night mode
.but black smear is there with or without.
Wish Google just went with a Samsung panel
Yeah, this is kind of a weird one as it seems to affect both P2s and P2XLs, but not all. Maybe its mostly a software issue but is most pronounced on certain screens for some reason? Idk.

It is difficult. Also do you trade in for another one? But run the risk of getting worse blue tint or grain or uneven whites... I'm going to give it a week, see if I find it a big deal or not. 90 percent of the time I don't notice because the brightness is higher during the day

Wow, so I've got a pretty bad unit...
Black Smear: Even on full brightness and slow scrolling. So bad, it even covers Text to the unreadable (It's complete gone and "hidden" under the Black-layer).
Black Crush: Until 40% noticable on Photos. Mostly in Shadows which are normally grey. They turn to a complete Black which looks awful.
Blue tilt: Starting at a very small angle. Pretty extreme and bad, but the other two are more of a dealbreaker for me.
Currently requesting an RMA after resetting my Device. And be sure to be nice to the Support. They did not manufacturer this Device wahtsoever.

I don't see anything wrong with blacks or greys during videos or on pictures whether night mode is on or off or brightness is high or low. Can someone post a screenshot or two? I'm curious.
Anybody else noticing an extremely subtle light purple-ish haze on the edges of extremely low light photos - i.e. where the dark/black areas are in a low light photo around the edges?
It's subtle. It's a reach to see it at times. But this is an expensive phone, so I'm going to nitpick... It reminds me of the old issues with the HTC One M7 and some older Motorola devices, though on a much more subtle level. I'm probably crazy, but I know I'm seeing it at times.
Snapdragon S20+ here (Verizon variant)
Ok, so I realize it would've helped my first post with some photos and additional info. Please keep in mind, I love the camera on this phone 90% of the time, but this 10% is an issue that reminds me of the old days (per my first post). I have two sets of photos... First are the originals, uploaded, and added into Photoshop with a black "frame" to help you see the haze better. The second set is a photo from my iPhone of what those photos look like on my S20's screen. Reality lies somewhere in between the two. The second set over-emphasizes more than what I see on the screen, and the first set mutes it too much. These photos are night mode photos, which I realized after my first post helps to accentuate and show the issue.
Ultimately the problem seems to be how the software and/or sensor are handling the extremes when you have a bright light source as the focal point, and dark outer edges (again, reminiscent of oooold devices). Anyway, the photos are attached. Hopefully that help clarifies it a bit more. It's nitpicky, as there aren't many scenarios where this would come up. But it's a $1k+ phone... I feel like I'm allowed to be nitpicky.
Is it always on the left side of the phone screen? i.e. always on the top of the phone? or does it change to either side when you rotate the phone (could be on the top or bottom sides)? I have not observed this purple thint issue, but your third photo shows that it is extremely bad.

No, it's more pronounced on the left there due to the lighting in that situation. But if you look at the fourth picture you can see it's relatively even on both sides where things start to darken.

I'm not saying it's normal, I too suffered from the HTC M7 syndrome but in those specific photos, is the purple haze coming from a TV light on your left? Is there any tv screen running when you took the pictures?

No - no TV's on anywhere. The purple haze is coming from the especially dark areas.
Just checked on mine s20+ exynos, other than very minor green tint no issues, if i were you i would replace it asap - something isnt right

I bought an unlocked S20 (+ was too large for me anyway) and tested it last night in the exact same spot and exact same scenario, and very little haze at all with no purple. I can see what it's trying to do - it's trying to lighten up those darker areas, but for some reason on that S20+ it was making it purple-ish and just plane ugly. It doesn't look "great" on the regular S20, but it's at least not purple and clearly just trying to lighten it up. S20+ is already on its way back for the return.
