Battery charge issue... - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Phone was at 98% battery. Did a reboot as I do every morning, and when it started up again it showed 91% battery. I know reboots don't take 7% battery, so what gives?

My Pixel 2 XL has been having some battery reporting issues, I noticed that when I took my phone off the charger it would lose 15% very quickly then stabilize. Rebooting would also cause a drop in indicated battery %. That's my guess. Investigating to see if it can be fixed by doing a full charge/discharge cycle.

I've also been seeing this issue! I will also be letting it do a full cycle today to see if it helps since it only started a few days ago.

My battery seems to be okay but my charge port when I place the cable in it doesn't feel like it fits snugly it almost has a slight wobble to it. Have you guys been noticing that as well?

I've actually been experiencing this as well for a week, I called up Verizon and they shipped me a new phone. So far no charge issue anymore on this one.

I have experienced this too

Tested this again this morning. Had the phone charging overnight.
Unplugged it, it showed 100% battery.
Immediately rebooted, and it dropped to 96%.

With a lot of phones, battery stats reset on reboot. Also- the percentage isn't a perfect science. Just let the phone do its thing. Run the battery down and recharge it. No need to reboot the thing every day.
The battery has been great for me. I use my phone extensively throughout the day, maybe 3-5 hours on time, I always make a day of use without needing to plug in. I had a light use day yesterday, and had 30% left @ 11pm, after pulling off charge the night before @ 11:30pm.

Pleased to announce that (in my case at least) doing a full cycle reset the fuel gauge and it is now working properly. I've never seen a device come with a miscalibrated fuel gauge from the factory, so that was odd. I usually keep my li-ion powered devices between 80% and 30% SoC(state of charge) to reduce cell degradation so we'll see if the fuel gauge becomes uncalibrated over time (which would be somewhat unusual) or if this was simply a software fluke.

Yea I have noticed that in my case, my phone says 100% on the charger so I will restart the phone while still plugged up and once it's booted back up it says 98% so it lost 2% while hooked up to the charger lol. Doesn't seem to affect the battery life. I'm still able to get 5 hrs of screen on time but I will try to kill it completely and charge fully today and see if it fixes it.
This morning I didn't do the restart and didn't use the phone or even turn my screen on and within fifteen minutes I turned it on to 98 % remaining.

Fully charged battery drops 10% charge for unknown reason

Hey people,
I've noticed this strange effect (which I notice using the Battery Graph app to observe how my usage drains the battery). When charging the phone, the phone will increase in charge constantly and gradually as expected. However when the phone is charged, I have seen it drop approximately 10% of charge. I've seen this in 2 situations:
1. When I disconnect it from the charger.
2. On on instance before I disconnected it from the charger when I had left it for an overnight charge. However, according to the graph, it had dropped 10% charge from full while connected to the charger then simply gone back to 100%. When I took it off the charger it stayed at 100%.
I should not that neither situation happens all the time. But situation 1 is a bit more frequent.
This is also not a Froyo issue as I only upgraded to Froyo yesterday and it happened to me this morning, but has happened before Froyo. The Battery Graph app takes a reading every 5mins and it is within this 5min period that the charge has dropped 10% which would probably rule out most apps. And again, this can happen the instant I take it off the charger.
Any ideas???

your asking to get slapped asking this question its been discussed in so many threads lol heres the score, when charging with the phone on, when ur charge reaches 100% it then discharges to 90, it will follow this cycle untill you unplug it, this is called exercising the battery, and i assume it a preventative method to stop you damaging your battery by overcharging it
I will consider myself duly slapped for not checking it up. I normally tell other people they should have checked!

[Q] Strange battery percentage drain in 10 minutes.....wtf

This morning after I got ready I took my phone off the charger (it had been charging all night and was at 100%) and walked upstairs. About 10 minutes later I turned on the phone and it was at 67% and going down. I had flashed a new rom yesterday and as quick as I could I did during the drain I did a NAND restore. Could this have been actual battery drain or is there something wrong with my phone/stats. Could my phone have stopped charging at 50% and then just said it was 100%? What should I do? Is there anyway to avoid this from happening again?! I cant go to work with a battery at 50%! lol
-.- Searching is your friend.
The Evo has never trickle charged properly. Trickle charging is when you hit 100% battery while charging and the phone will continue to keep the battery charging and maintain this 100%. So 100% > 99% > 100%.
The problem is the Evo doesn't do this. Once it hits 100%, it switches to battery. It will run off the battery till it hits about 90% and then charge again. Some even say it will NEVER charge again after it hits 100%. So when you unplug it in the morning, you end up dropping extremely fast from 100% to 90%.
There are kernels in the development section that fix this issue but there are people who say it will break your phone or burn your battery out faster over time. When trickle charging, your phone will get hot as its constantly draining and charging. That can lead to a burned out battery as time goes on or a damaged phone. I personally have three batteries. I still tried to use this and noticed a drastic improvement but my phone was also pretty warm when I picked it up in the morning. Its up to you.
Also you might want to see if you have your 4G radio on. That is probably the only thing I can think of that would drain it that fast. Either that or your GPS is on and theres an app running thats using the GPS receiver.
i'd say a 30% drain in 10 minutes is unnatural. it wouldnt be myns rls4 that you flashed, would it? this is experianced by some as a "first day side effect". just fully drain and fully charge the battery a few times and you will be fine.
It could be that it just needs a couple drains and I don't want to quickly point the finger at an app that you are using. A lot of times if I actually charge my phone it will be on 92% when I wake up. 67% is a stretch unless that was 10 minutes of a game or YouTube..but still. Drain the battery a few times and see what happens.
i was thinking maybe its some kind of battery stats problem? Could that have caused it?

[Q] Battery charging regimen?

Is there a preferred battery charging regimen for the One X battery?
That is, is it better to, say, always let it drop to 15% and then recharge to 100%, or can/should I charge whenever possible, or in smaller increments?
Also, are there disadvantages to using the phone while charging (as I tend to do quite a lot )?
Thanks!
i normally let mine down to about 10% then just charge it too 100%

Right, but do you know if this is actually the way to go with the Li-Po battery or are you, like me, just winging it?
When i first got my phone i let it run down till it asked for the charger, then left it on charge over night.
I did this for the first 3 or 4 times as i found this yields the longest battery life, since then i charge every 2 days regardless what percentage is left always over night though.
Going to leave it tonight & see if it will go till tomorrow night, its been off charge since 7am on Friday morning so far & is still on 46% a total of 39 hours so far.

You get two days on a charge? Are you a wizard? Although, having just got the phone (and possessing the patience of a 5 year old), I've done a lot of start-stop charging, which I suspect isn't optimal.
I'll try to refrain from trickle charging for a while, see how much difference it makes. Thanks.
Another battery charging thread? Just plug in the damn phone! It will take care of the rest.

I have noticed that the battery does drain in strange amounts.
I have my wifi & gps on constantly, my phone went for 2 days 5 hours & i received a text at which point the phone was at 34% battery.
The phone was put back in stand by & the phone went totally flat in the next 4 hours, this i find strange as over night in stand by it only uses 1 - 2%.
There is obviously a bug in the way the phone reports its battery state, by my reasoning this must be some 10 - 15% lower than what it is reporting.
It does seem to have some difficulties reading the battery level correctly. I've noted a couple of times that it shows a significantly higher charge level (+5-7%) after a reboot. Which is hardly likely to recharge the battery. (Unless I got me one of those perpetuum mobile, in which case, yay!)

Phone was 25% battery, But 50% battery after reboot?

Hey guys, I've had my phone for 4 or so months now and I always charge it while my phone is off and never had any charging/battery issues until today, I decided to charge my phone while it's on and it charged up to 25% and I restarted my phone without removing it from the charger and after it booted back it it's showing 50%, I restarted a few times, tried a cold boot, it's still 50%.
Is this a known issue with this phone? does anyone know what's causing this? I've never had this happen before.
EDIT: After this happened I ran my battery to 0% so I can attempt a battery calibration and when I poped it on the charger it showed my battery was actually 0% and showed a yellow hazard triangle thing (normally it only drops to 1% and there has never been a yellow triangle before)
Sometimes the Android system can incorrectly report a battery charged. I have had it happen to me on my Nexus by about 10%, but have not had it happen to me on my G3. I would not worry about it too much if it only happened to you once. If in continues you to jump around in battery percentage, then I would suggest getting a replacement battery. Keep in mind to try not to leave it charging for very long after reaching 100%, from my experience it can effect a battery's ability to hold a charge if that is done repeatedly. Which means do not leave it charging overnight while you are sleeping. Also I would not suggest running it until 0%, I would imagine a sudden shut down of the Android Operating system is not a healthy thing for it either. Just like it is not good to go up to a computer and just pull the power cord.

Thanks for the input.
I never leave my phone on the charger while I sleep since it only drops 1% while I sleep. My phone actually only goes on the charger like 3 times a month
I know it's not good to fully drain the battery very much, I was just draining it to attempt a battery calibration in the os. And when I do this my phone usually only drops to 1% then dies, but all of a sudden it dropped to 0% this time and showed a big yellow triangle with a big exclamation mark in it
Anyways I reflashed my rom in hopes I can flush the problem out. In 4 months of owning this phone I've never seen this warning before.
This is almost exactly what happened with my old phone (Samsung Captivate Glide). If this continues to happen, it is one of the first signs of the battery failing. But if this is a one time thing, I wouldn't worry about it.
In my case, the battery was going bad. It started going from any % battery, down to 0 instantly, forcing a shutdown. After rebooting, It would show a decent charge (~60% most of the time), but would do the same thing within 5 minutes. At first it only acted up like this once a month, but it became more and more frequent that it happened every day, after using the phone for only 15 minutes. The only fix is to get a replacement battery.

tyvm, This is extremely helpful info to keep in mind. Now that you mention it I have seen the battery kinda swollen up a couple times when it got hot, only ever so slightly but I did notice it.
If my issue persists i'll defnitly try a new battery, thanks for the tip

Poor battery since 6.0.1?

So I updated my phone tonight and after it used 30% in an hour or so. All I was doing was using FB on it. Prior I played PAD for 15 minutes and it hardly used 5%. I've wiped cache, cleared app cache, and now I'm working on a full discharge from 100%. The battery is brand new and it was getting better life prior to the upgrade. So much for 3x better battery I guess?
After clearing caches I left it idle ofer night. It used 13% for 20 minutes of screen time. and then it used 3% idle over the 5 hours I slept. Still seems a bit high on usage for screen time but idle is great.
So I discharged it completely and now its losing power fast again. The battery was 100% unplugged it and turned it on and its 97%. So I turned it back off and checked it and its also showing 97%. Charge it back to 100%, turn it on, its on 100% but loses 1% in a second. Plugged it in while onand it took like 3 minutes to charge that last 1%/ No idea why. The battery is brand new and got 2 or 3 days on idle before, now it reports 20 hours. what happened to that 3x better battery? What else can I do to sync the battery properly? I also noticed 100% is not 100% until the phone tells me battery is charged.
Again this battery is brand new and my life with 5.1.1 was pretty good.
I've been having poor battery calibrations in EPH7, though my battery is still what came with the phone.
There are days I can get to about 5? left before the phone dies, and there are days it dies at 15?..
Already tried charging all the way till full while the phone was off, still the same. It's random, but I just generally expect the phone to turn off as I come close to 15?.

That sounds like a bad battery. I can get my phone to drain down to 0% before it dies, but the battery usage can be erratic.
After some testingm the first 5% (95-100%) does down fast but after that it can go a pretty good while. Not sure why. I left the screen on with max brightness, turned on NFC/wifi/bluetooth and just left tons of apps running and it took 4-5 hours to get the battery down to 20%. the life is in fact great just not properly synced. No root makes it more of a pain to calibrate.
So I charged the battery offline and it got to 100%. I switched it on and it shows 97%. What the hell has marshmallow done to my note?
last post. If I charge the phone formt he OS it reaches 100% seemingly properly and doesn't discharge quickly. Not sure what marshmallow screwed up.
I had the same issue with my battery draining quickly after the upgrade. I backed up all of my data and then performed a master rest of the phone and then went into recovery and cleared cache as well. Once it booted back up I reloaded all of my apps and reconfigured all my accounts and my battery acts normal once again. It was a pain in the ass to do all of that but it did work for me so hopefully it works for you too.
