Fire TV basic edition on non-basic Fire TV editions - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know how to force a specific built firmware to a fire TV non-rooted? New basic edition Fire OS 5.2.6.0 (587444320) that allows Prime video in several countries it only differs from other firmware in built version as for example with Fire TV stick Fire OS 5.2.6.0 (587444820). Iam in SouthAmerica, own all the Fire TV versions except the basic edition, I deregistered or factory reset them, tests several accounts/countries in Amazon.com but the Fire TV devices still gets the non-basic built in

Hi there. I have the same issue here.
I bought the Fire TV Stick wit Voice Remote when I was living in the US, and now I cannot take into advantage my Prime subscription in Spain, as the the OS/software (not sure actually) of the stick is not exactly the same of the Basic Edition recently launched worldwide.
Any ideas, tutorials on how to flash our device wit a compatible rom, or remove/install any software to make the device compatible?
Thanks a lot for your help!

I'm in the same wagon. I have a 1st gen fire tv stick, and a fire tv, and live in south america. I have a prime membership to use amazon cloud storage, and I would like to use it also for the videos, but I can't without a VPN. This new basic editon gives me an alternative, but is more expensive, and it has fewer features that the regular fire tv stick, so I would like to buy the regular one, and change it to use it as a basic edition. Would it be possible?
Thanks!

I've asked the exact same question over at AFTVnews (sorry, I'm not allowed to post links).
I also found this comment at the Amazon Developer website (again, sorry, I'm not allowed to post links):
"How Basic Edition Differs from Gen 2
From a hardware perspective, the specs for Fire TV Stick Basic Edition and Fire TV Stick (Gen 2) are largely the same except that the Basic Edition doesn’t ship with an Alexa Voice Remote. Fire TV Stick (Gen 2) is available in US, UK, Germany, Japan, and India, whereas Basic Edition is available outside these areas in more than 100 countries or territories (see the full list here).
The user interface for Basic Edition is also simplified in some ways, making it more of an app-centric experience. For example, the “Recommended By Your Apps” rows that is normally populated through Recommendations isn’t shown on Basic Edition. The tabs on the top row are simplified, and you find apps by browsing the available categories rather than using search. Customers can set their default language as Spanish, Italian, French, Brazilian Portuguese, German, or English."
So it seems the hardware is "largely the same", but the user interfaces are different.
As of today, I haven't found how to convert or flash a Fire TV Stick (Gen 2) into a Fire TV Stick Basic Edition.

Any News about that?
Thanks!

I chatted with an Amazon rep, and he said "there's no way to convert the Fire stick into the Basic edition. The basic edition is hardwired to work outside the US (hence the Price difference)."
And he suggested I return the non-basic Fire stick for a refund, and purchase a Basic Fire Stick.

At least we can side-load prime video for androidtv version from play store.
It works, can play fhd. Just the picture stuck until next keyframe come after quality changes. And also it is not integrating into the ui.

one year has passed and I'm wondering if anyone found a solution

I'm using the basic app on my alexa fire tv gen2 stick. And the firmware actually contains it, just it is hidden by default. Maybe the fw in europian region is different, or you need to change your region to an other (in my case to german) temporary to have the app on the stick.
You should read my comments from the other topic, with some adb magic

And, btw, two years passed

[Q] Looking for an XBMC streaming Box. Fire TV or OUYA?

I found out, of the amazing power of XBMC and I found out it's been ported to multiple platforms such as Android, OUYA and recently the Fire TV. I want a box that I can use XBMC on my TV to use apps for streaming like (identities of apps have been changed) SmashDown, FireFilms,MovieY2K, SportsDemon (LIVE Streaming) and that one that has XBMC in the name that you can use for torrents and more.
My question is...if I want to use this box for internet streaming and such..which would be the best?
IF I bought a Fire TV? would it come with the unrootable update? (I don't want a Fire TV if I can't root it) what's your thoughts about XBMC on OUYA? At Least I wouldn't have any issues blocking update servers on my router as OUYA doesn't mind rooting....right..?
Which one would be more powerful in streaming? or are they equally matched?
any feedback would be appreciated
go for fire tv. I have switched from a cheap chinese android tv stick and the difference is huge. i mainly use xbmc for streaming tv shows and movies and it runs beautifully.
you can find all the information about rooting here http://www.aftvnews.com/tag/guide/
read through and make sure you are comfortable with the procedure before purchasing fire tv.
Go Fire TV!
A rooted Fire TV with a dedicated XBMC/Kodi Launcher with access to the KFTV Launcher and Amazon content is an outright beast. I could not be happier with the Fire TV after ditching that antiquated Roku platform.
Hmm... Well would it come out of the box if I bought one now with the unrootable update?.. Is it that hard to block update servers?
Not getting a response from the OUYA community so it's looking like a fire TV (if I can root it)

Only one way to find out.

Grab a Fire TV from either Amazon, Best Buy or Staples and give it a try following the AFTVnews guide regarding root and blocking the update. Nothing to lose except time as you are free to return it within 30 days.
It seems that a war of android boxes is coming soon! I bought an Amazon Fire TV and I'm very happy with it.
Android TV shall be available soon this year and also there is another device

I believe that we shall be many flavors later on to choose, but to tell you the truth? I'd go with something very related to Google that is Android TV, They always have the best support, also shall come with Android L OS
As an owner of BOTH, I can tell you the AFTV is a b_tch to deal with (not that Ouya is friendly by any means, but nowhere near AFTV). Incompatible apps, kooky app install procedure, draconian checks for apps by Amazon so I can't even install the YouTube for AFTV (which I OWN), etc.
For me the deciding factor was Netflix HD with DD+...if that is not your thing or you don't have Prime, go for Ouya and save some money and hassle in the process.
Hope this helps.
For what it's worth, I just ordered a fire tv from amazon last thursday that came with the original firmware....

Uhm... I plan to just use it with rooted XBMC / kodi launcher to stream videos from different live streaming add-ons... How about that?

Ouya removed alt-launchers support a few updates back.
You can fix this by renaming the ouyalauncher.apk/odex files to .old(or remove the files all together), then installing a version of the ouyalauncher.apk that still supports alt-launchers. I.E. the ouyalauncher.apk from an older update.
It's a bit of a hassle.

Wow...
**** move for a struggling console. It's looking more like a fire TV for me. I'm scared of by the time I get one it's going to be bundled with the unrootable update

Just got rid of my ouya and replaced it with fire tv. Love it.

FireTv Stick Gen 1, trying to sideload "Prime Video" any ideas?

Hi All
I am in New Zealand (Thats a country in case you are unsure),
I have an Amazon FireTV stick 1st generation
Prime Video Is available in my country, but is only supported on the newer FireTV stick Basic edition*
I have tried sideloading the PrimeVideo app from my phone to the firestick, but i am getting an error saying the app can't be installed, is there someway or somewhere i can find a log of what is failing, eg if there is a dependency missing or I need an older version, or something?
*Note, its a limitation of the Firestick not a setting issue as Prime Video works perfectly on my Apple TV , and in the prime Video app on my phone (and yes i can send the Video to the stick via the phone) and on my computer, If you look under supported devices on the primevideo site only the basic edition is supported, and i'm a cheapskate who doesn't want to spend more money
** Note, I am talking about primevideo.com which is a watered down version of Amazon Prime.
Any help would be appreciated

Does anyone have the Prime Video apk from the international Fire TV Stick?

The reason I ask is because I bought the wrong fire TV, I bought the US version when I should have bought the international version from my country. Mind you some apps work (Netflix, YouTube) in my country but not Prime Video App, is geo restricted.
I've been using the web version of prime video as a walk around but I would very much like to try the apk.
I've downloaded the Prime Video APK for nvidia shield and xiaomi tv but they seem to work a bit sluggish on my fire stick, and it often freezes.
I hope I'm not alone in this situation and someone found some sort of solution.
when you register fire stick you will get international prime apk with software update, but unfortunately us prime will still be present on home screen.

Amazon Prime on FireStick 4K in the Netherlands?

I've bought a Fire Stick 4K UK edition. I can log-in into amazon prime, but due location restrictions I cannot play 1 video.
The fire stick 4K isn't officially available in the Netherlands. But is there a way to get it work? Fire stick basic edition does work in the Netherlands (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201624360)
Or will the content on the 4k fire stick play when Amazon enables 4K for the Netherlands?
When you have a German fire stick, can you use that with an UK account in the UK? If that works, then the Netherlands will follow. Of that doesn't work, is there a tweak available? Rooting the fire stick and installing a custom ROM?
As we do here in Brazil, you have 3 choices to watch Amazon Prime Video with a NL account in a Fire TV other than the Basic Edition:
1. Install the Android TV app (googleplay armv7a variant), available through Aptoide TV.
2. Cast from the Prime Video app in your smartphone. (It's not mirroring. It's cast)
3. Use the Silk Browser to access PrimeVideo.com.
Each one has its pros and cons.

Sky Go UK APK workarround?

Has anybody looked into a workarround to enable the Sky Go apk to work on Amazon Fire TV Devices?
The app can be installed on Amazon Tablets and other Tablets/Phones and work fine however when it comes to Amazon TV devices it gives an error.
I assume this is due to some sort of Licencing issue or DRM - but it would be nice for those who have it to still use it.
Which brings me arround to the first question, has anybody looked into tweaking the Amazon Fire TV to allow the app to work?
Edit: It is worth noting the German version has been patched before <https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/app-no-root-skygo-for-fire-tv.3776919/> but Im specifically talking the UK version.
