Hey guys, I'm currently on XL and want to pull the trigger for XL2. Can anyone confirm if tethering is working? For some reason, I can't get my XL to tether anymore on Verizon.
I'm on the $80 unlimited plan.

Tethering does not seem to work out of the box. However there are a number of people who have rooted the phone and have gotten it working that way

Just tested it where i'm at (horrible signal and data speeds) but wifi tethering still worked on my laptop just fine.

I guess that's why tethering works for me, I'm rooted. But that shouldn't be the answer it should work without root, unfortunately i didn't think to test that before i unlocked my bootloader and rooted.
I'm rooted on XL with the build.prop edit and it's not working for me. It connects, but gives no data. Any idea as to why?
Are you on the Verizon $80 unlimited?

I'm have the Verizon version of the Pixel 2 XL and tethering works fine out of the box for me.
depends if you're prepaid or postpaid. Tethering won't work on the prepaid $80 plan.

I can't speak to that personally. But I can't see how it isn't solved with root. I am on verizon prepaid but most likely keeping everything as is

On XL when I turn it on, devices connect, but don't have a connection. I have the pixel and pixel XL. One on T-Mobile and the other on Verizon. I swapped Sims and same thing. T-Mobile works just fine on either phone.
Whichever one I put Verizon Sim in can't tether suddenly.

I have it out of the box ....but I don't know why people think the VZ sold product is any different than the G-store item
Uhg..much reading later I think its going back...Seems the VZ version cannot get bootloader unlocked and if so it seems like a hell of a mess. Im just a simple flasher..or please correct me if I am wrong??

Hey there I work for Verizon. So hotspot is disabled on prepaid $60 and $80 plans. As far as postpaid. They made it more complicated.
"Verizon unlimited"no longer available unless you switched to it from the beginning. This plan includes 15gb of high-speed hotspot/tether is included with this plan​ and will slow to unlimited 3g speeds after.You get 22gb of prioritized high speed lte. Now if your at a big event like a baseball game. Everyone who has Verizon there will be on the same tower. Those that are on this plan and have gone over the 22gb if data will experience a slower connection for the time period until they leave and connect to a different tower. Also includes calls to Mexico and Canada whether you're here or there. $85 bucks $80 with auto pay.
"Go unlimited" this plan has no high speed lte hotspot. But you have unlimited 3g hot spot. You are not prioritized, you can be slowed down on a busy tower wether you have used 1gb or 100gb of data. no Mexico no Canada. And 480p restriction for streaming. $80 bucks $75 with auto pay.
"Beyond unlimited" this is much like the first plan I listed. Everything is the same except there's a 720p restriction on streaming and it's $90 bucks $85 with autopay.
Hopefully you jumped on the first plan when u had the chance. All they accomplished by splitting the plan into two was confused the hell out of me. Lol. My understanding is, you can buy both the Google version and the Verizon version from Google. BUT, the Verizon version from Google IS locked and from all that I've read, it's locked REAL tight, like many other Verizon devices are.
I think the confusion stems from those buying it outright from Google presume their Verizon device will be unlocked, and it isn't. It's the exact same device you'd get if you walked into a Verizon store (I'm sure there's a ton of legal wording preventing Google from selling Verizon branded unlocked devices.
I'm not sure why anyone would pay the same for a locked device over a unlockable device. If you're never going to unlock it, get the unlockable one JUST IN CASE you change your mind, if not, it's a selling feature for the future.
Hopefully this clears things up a bit.

I'm fortunate I got a N8 and I have just ordered the same 128 device from G in Panda style hopefully that will fetch more than the just black model when I move on again next year...But I'm Sooo praying to that Beanstown comes to the PXL2 soon. Hell ASAP I ran his PN rom and it was the sh**.
The guy's just a ROM savant

Im considering leaving Verizon and my unlimited Data plan behind for AT&T. Am I crazy? I think of it like this.... We have more options with GSM. Google will sell the Nexus from now on for a no contract price cheaper than the stores. Verizon will probably never see another Nexus. If we like a phone that is ether not coming to the states or coming 6 months later we can still buy one.

You'll lose your unlimited Verizon plan when you "upgrade" your phone anyways... unless you buy full price.
So yeah personally I'm GSM all the way and I buy my phones full price anyways, and I use no contract T-Mobile. So up to you if you want.

Unless the coverage is poor in your area I would recommend T-Mobile over AT&T. AT&T is a rather awful carrier in more ways than I'd like to go into right now. Either way, while Verizon has incredible coverage I never recommend using a CDMA network of any kind, much less Verizon, but that is my own personal opinion.

Is this something that was just recently instated? I didn't buy my GN right away but when I upgraded I kept my Unlimited Data even though at the time they were selling 2gb/4gb/6gb packages.

Yes this is a recent change, it went into effect when shared data plans started (1-2 weeks ago)

Yep, starting June 28 the unlimited data plan is no longer available on Verizon for new contracts or upgrades

Few days ago, actually. We have just known it was coming for that long
GSM all the way. I much prefer the flexibility of SIM cards to..well..hard programming into the phone. There's something nice about being able to totally skip your carrier when you want to change phones.
For example, I got sick of my old HTC Legend. Even though I was only a year into my contract, I got a second hand Xperia Play, swap the sim, boom boom done. A year later I'm due for an upgrade and I'm not even sick of my phone. No matter, hello Nexus!

Yeah it's new. Came with the new shared everything plans. And apparently they're also going to start tacking on a 40 dollar per month service fee for smartphones as well. Really lame.
In my opinion, I'm really happy with ATT. Yeah they're more expensive than TMobile, but their coverage is damn good and my hspa+ speeds are actually faster than VZW's lte where I live. It really depends on your area. But I definitely suggest either ATT or TMobile purely for the gsm phones. Means you can use international versions as well.

Not disagreeing that shared plans suck, but the shared plan and fee go together. It isn't enforced on other plans.

Verizon found a way around it. Sprint on the other hand...they are still provisioned per phone.

When did it change? I remember when my American BF changed his phone a year or two ago (verizon) and he had to get them to reprogram the contacts because of lack of SIM. Sorry for the lack of knowledge here, I live in Canada.

With the addiiton of LTE devices, they brought in the SIMs as well.
Their EvDo devices are simless, but as far as I know, there will be no more new 3G devices brought out. At least this year.

Yeah I forgot about that. I haven't looked at the new pricing at all, just read articles about it. Do you by chance know if the shared plans are cheaper overall for say a family of 4 with smartphones on the shared plan vs an old plan where they all have like 30 per month individual data plans? Seems to me like it wouldn't be much of a stretch for a carrier to pull some BS like that nowadays. Haha.

Me too. I am dying to know what off contract pricing is going to be. Shame about their limited 4G data caps though. I can't wait for truly unlimited data to come back to the carriers.
As I understand Verizon has some grandfathers and I've got it for for Sprint, but I wouldn't call what Sprint offers "4G" or even "data" most of the time.

You can thank T-mobile for being a pricing leader and make other carriers have unlimited data. I get unlimited LTE data on T-mobile.

I've been with Sprint for over 4 years and couldn't be happier! I have unlimited everything and only pay $45 per month! While I only saw Wimax once, I get LTE everywhere. I average 25mbps down at my house, which is 20 minutes outside of Atlanta

I've been with them 11 years. Way before "since the ground up". My Treo 650 got better speeds than by Note 3. Note 2. HTC Evo 4G LTE. EVI 3D. Evo Wimax. Evo. PPC6800. PPC6700. Palm Centreo. Treo 700. Moto Q. I'm sure there were others. I've been Sprint before SERO. I've got a screen grab on HoFo of me using 35+GB of data in a month back when they're 3G was mediocre. I couldn't max out my connection and for 3 months and use that now.
I think my doctorate thesis will be only poor people use Sprint.

I'm on a grandfathered unlimited data AT&T plan. I don't use a lot of data and I think AT&T throttles it if you exceed 5 GB/mo.

Great idea IF you want to appear unintelligent, lol. Based on your thesis, everyone around Atlanta who chooses the best carrier is now poor. You could be absolutely correct, though, and it has nothing to do with the others having spotty coverage and terrible speeds.

Finally, Sprint does NOT throttle their users. I see @mty msi said AT&T throttles, so thought I would chime in. I average 25-35GB each month and my download speeds are always between 25-30mbps.

I have unlimited data on AT&T as well...its $30, however if you have a employer discount that comes off the $30 unlimited plan, or $50 5gb plan, not off the $30 3gb plan. I have a 24% discount on my bill which gives 24% off $60 700min family plan, and 24% off my $30 unlimited and 24% off my younger sisters $50 5gb plan.
I pay $22.80 for Unlimited data. I just reached 5gb my first time this past labor day at my family's cottage in northern Michigan, I have never had internet on my phone up north, but now I get a solid 4 Mbps download H+ speed up there, so naturally I streamed a few Netflix movies and hit my 5gb...they throttle me to .55 Mbps no matter where I am. At home(metro Detroit) I can sometimes pull 40mbps down 5mbps up on LTE, so to be throttled to .55 is ridiculous, I cannot watch YouTube videos, however I can still stream music without buffering. So I view my Unlimited data as a $22 5gb data plan...which isn't bad...but still...that amount of throttling is terrible and a cheap ploy to get us to change plans as everyone knows a faster 4g connection is cheaper to provide than slower 3g.

Sold my current phone and will rock a dump phone on call forwarding to my work smartphone until AT&T launches the Note 4 then Verizon will be reduced to my tablet line which is for work. Suck it Verizon.
AT&T's page says " AT&T today confirmed that it will be among the first U.S. carriers to bring you the Galaxy Note 4" not the first, but among the first so hopefully they will be right on top for 10-10-14 which is the speculated date and the day before my billing cycle.
I will pass on the Note 4...Boot loader will be locked and no root in sight...Not buying a phone you can't root.
im gonna pass on the note 4 for att... but pickup a note 4 on tmobile.. lets hope they dont pull any games with the bootloader :good:

Just to add to this for those of you who are coming from older phones and may not be aware of AT&T's locked bootloader practice the last couple years.
The first batch of Galaxy S4's could be flashed to AOSP if you wanted.
But since then, all premium Galaxy (and maybe others) phones on AT&T have a locked bootloader. And to this day, nobody has broken it and that means you cannot flash a custom recovery or AOSP ROMs.
And, it took a LONG time before root was even available for the S5.

I used to tinker with my android phones in the past, flashing ROM's all the time, but since I use my phone more and more for work I starting going stock and not worrying as much about it. Perhaps if Dish buys T-Mobile they could become the ULTIMATE UnCarrier and kick all of them in the nutz.

I'm thinking of purchasing the TMO phone and using on ATT. I need the ATT coverage. But, I think I'll hold off until it is confirmed that it can be rooted.

Same here. I have installed a lot of different ROMS, most of which typicall have very positive feedback. But, I find there is ALWAYS something, however minor it may be (or not) that does not work right. Always. Now, of course, some of that can likely be attributed to the various phones that are different due to manufacturing tolerances. But I'm tired of it.
But I do want root so I can do effective backups, and use some of the apps I have that require (or work better) if rooted.

I did enjoy the custom ROM's as you mentioned and today for me its really about rooting and getting the features back that were stolen by the carriers. Not sure if that will every happen or not, that said I am waiting for the Note 4 before casting any final decisions.
I just wish Samsung would start holding their press events closer to their release dates. I hate watching the Crapple products get all the press because they get to market faster. I hope AT&T is first (one of the first) to release again.

Same here. I am on T-Mobile, and if it looks like it will be difficult to root, I may hold off till the Nexus X.

Being it's Verizon I would say very likely but I am sure it will get cracked at least until new updates remember this is Verizon your talking about they love to be in control of things that they have no right to be. Easy fix don't buy from Verizon buy from Google or if you can buy from HTC as they will treat you better in the long run like the $100 in free accessories they gave the HTC 10 buyers after we got an extra free USB-C charge cable months before and maybe uh oh protection might be included too but that is hoping lol.

Given the way the past Nexus devices (that included support for Verizon and were eventually sold through them) the answer is no. They use the exact same hardware presumably. But until we start seeing model numbers confirmed it could be a possibility. But the unlocked version will support Verizon and it will have Google as your main access for support (which has been good to some people in the past).

Keep trying and clicking in different orders. Like adding the 128GB before the color, size, etc. I managed to snag one that way. BE PERSISTENT!

The only reason I'd consider buying it straight from Verizon is because it would be added onto my bill in which my job would end up paying for my phone. If I buy it from the PlayStore i'd have to buy it on my own.
I think I'm going to end up with a Note 7.

I'm in that boat as well, work will pay for my phone if I get it through Verizon. Here's hoping that I can in some way sell the Verizon phone NIB and buy the unlocked one.
If you get it from Verizon they are offering the promotion 2 year contract again exclusively for this phone. So you can get the pixel 128gb for like $300....but it might be bootloader locked and you won't get the free vr headset promo the Google store is offering right now.

All I see on their web site is the payment plan and the option to pay full retail price and I looked all over Verizon's web site and I cannot see the contract option for either pixel phone. Can you provide a link to where you found it please, thanks.

My coworker told me about the 2 year promo...I didn't actually see it myself. He is currently at the end if a 2 year promo so maybe that has something to do with it??
Oh that's it. Anyone on a contract can keep getting new contracts like that. But new customers cannot get a contract from Verizon directly. You can still get service through Verizon with a new contract and subsidised phone you just have to purchase the Verizon service through dealers like best buy and target I know they both list new Verizon service with a contract where you get the phone subsidised instead of a payment plan or paying full retail price for the phone.

Someone will probably figure out a way to unlock it. You could just wait it out and you might get a better deal waiting also.

Yeah, but it took well over a year to unlock the verizon S5 (at least. I hadn't looked for another year, so it might have been over 2). It'll be cracked Eventually but how long will it take
I'm not too worried about the bootloader being locked as I've stopped rooting my phones and flashing ROMS but I just need to know if the Verizon model has all the bands to work properly on t-mobile. I have 2 sims and need to confirm this.

Highly unlikely I would guess. I think you can get it from the google store tho and have it activated on verizon network still, from what I have read. That version would come ready to be unlocked.

I am not even on Verizon . lol I'm on tmbile but Google rep said about a month until they go back up for sale. There is one on craiglist for 1,000$ for 32 GB idk if I should make the move or not.

Why wouldn't you buy a "Verizon version with expectation of using it on another carrier"?
I bought a Verizon version last night from Best Buy (im not really worried about unlocking the bootloader at this point. Been doing it for years lol ) and put my T-Mobile sim card in and it worked immediately.
All these Google Pixel phones are carrier unlocked. Every single one. The only difference is that the Verizon version currently cannot be Bootloader unlocked, but I'm sure it will someday.
I would say buy from google if you really want to have an unlocked bootloader. I wont say it will never be unlocked but i think there will be very few working on it for the simple fact that you can buy an unlocked version. I would have bought it from google but it was more cost effective for me to buy it from Verizon.

I'm with verizon but bought it from the Google store. I am thinking about switching carriers sometime soon so I don't want to be stuck with monthly payments from Verizon on a device that won't be used on their carrier. That's why I did Google finance. Plus I already give too much money to Verizon each month. Bootloader being unlocked or not doesn't bother me but some people will want root and one day I may root and I want that option.

Same here. My wife is on Verizon and I looked at adding a line. If I buy it outright (pixel xl) I don't get the big credit for my V10, only fair market value and I don't get the free data bump either. At the end of the day, staying with T-Mobile with unlimited data just makes sense

Yeah man ilove being grandfather in. I scanned a copy of my original contract, and a few times they tried to switch my plans to the new jump and I was like nope I have a SIGNED contract. Lol LOVE IT!! also I can't get throttle after using 20+ gigs of data.
Never buy a phone for what it MIGHT do in the future.
If you need root/unlocked bootloader buy a phone that already has that.

It seems there are too many Verizon models running around now that somehow came with an unlockable bootloader.... makes me think there is a better chance at the devs finding a way. Mostly just a hunch but....

I ask because there seem to be differences between the features offered. For example, my carrier, Sprint, doesn't support WiFi calling or simultaneous talk/surf on the Pixel 2. They just rolled out "Calling Plus", which supposedly does these things but only very few Sprint locked phones are supported yet. Worse still, I've heard that they'll never support the Pixels that way. This makes me want to switch but I like my cheap unlimited plan.
I've been trying Project Fi. I like it so far (it has those features I mentioned above) but I'm afraid it isn't very cost effective for my wife and I at 9.3gb/month average combined usage on Sprint. Fi isn't too far out of line for us and I like it's features but can we do better?
Do the other carriers support these features? Thanks for any insight on this as I would like to keep my Pixel and not have to switch to a Samsung.

Unlimited TMobile has been my go to for years! Including free international roaming, text & data...
I use total wireless at 60 bucks a month for 2 phones with 8 gig data .. on Verizon antennas.. no calling features, but I've read some people can get the tethering to work.. also FYI my pixel xl2 gets a more consistent signal and data through put than my XL ever dreamed about.. htc dropped the ball with the pixel XL radios. My main reason for this purchase
Thx all. Looks like Project Fi is about the same price as the current T-Mobile deal at our level of usage. The advantage with Fi is that you can choose carrier networks on the fly if one or the other isn't working at the moment. But if we use more data any particular month, it could get expensive. It works the other way too though as you pay for exactly what you use. With T-Mobile, in flight internet and Netflix are solid advantages.

Nope, I got hosed on that deal and was pretty pissed about it. Do the deal was, you had till Nov 2nd to get up the line. I ordered my device on the 6th and received it on the 31st. So I had what? Two days to get in and switch my carrier? And some people that have ordered still havent even gotten theirs because of color choices.
Then again the associate didn't even know they had a promo for the new pixels, and took her twenty minutes to find any information about it. So I'm actually going to do some looking around on the **** I saw online to see if they have end dates.
Verizon has a terrible app that can allow texts over WiFi, it always worked like garbage for me, and like two samjunks and all the iPhones offer wifi calling on vzw. But to me, this might as well mean they don't offer it.
I also wanted to get away from having to use a device that can use cdma, cdma is old, and very much outdated, which only vzw and Sprint use.
So now, even if I descided to get a different phone, it opens up more device choices that I normally wouldn't have since all phones offer gsm support, but not always cdma
Also, if you have two lines on the unlimited all plan that I got, apparently you get a free Netflix account too.
If you're an old fogie like me, you can get 2 lines of unlimited everything on T-Mobile for $60/mo if one of you is 55+. If you know someone 55+ who you could share the plan with, it's a great deal.
Wifi calling and textimg works great for me on Verizon.

Tethering is included, but at 3G speeds. You can pay additional for 4G.

Do you happen to have access to one of the Sprint supported phones? With Verizon, I had to setup the WiFi calling on a Verizon branded phone first, set e911 address, and then when I switched my sim back into the pixel XL (og), the WiFi calling options showed up and worked fine.

Same here. I'm not sure what Lawlrus is talking about in regards to wifi calling & texting on Verizon. What he's saying was true a couple years ago, but isn't with any recent phones on Verizon. Seems like his info is out of date. I've been using wifi calling & texting on Verizon for a while now through several phones, including the Pixel XL and Pixel 2 XL. Works great. I'm often in areas with weak signal, and being able to call and text over wifi allows me to put my phone in airplane mode to save on battery life. I've used it while traveling overseas as well.
Ask yourself this though. Is WiFi calling and simultaneously talking and having data really that necessary for you that it would be worth a possible price jump to another carrier? I'm with Sprint an hard actually talk on the phone enough to want or need either of those features.

I was on Verizon for 6 years. I bought the Pixel 2 XL from Google so I decided to try Project Fi. It's ok, but there are too many issues with it that I just can't deal with. Wifi calling on speaker phone echos back the person on the other line to them, Google knows this is an issue with project fi, but can't seem to fix it. Sometime the call doesn't answer when you try and answer the phone, you can't hear the person on the other end. The tower switching just flat out sucks. In places where I get full bars on TMobile (which is like everywhere for me) some times it switches to Sprint which will have little to no service and I will need to force the phone back to TMobile. On my wife's phone which I also put on fi, she would be right next to me and she would be on a different tower. Made no sense. Even restarting the phone it wouldn't switch so we would need to force switch whichever phone was stuck on Sprint. I wanted so much to like project fi, but unfortunately it's just too much of a hassle. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was when I send an mms to someone it compresses the image to just a terrible image the size of a thumbnail. Again this is a known issue on Project fi that other people just deal with. I'm not interested in having a half ass phone carrier just to save some money. I would rather pay a little more for good consistent service.
I am switching to TMobile. I have 2 SIM cards coming. $120 (that includes taxes) per month for 2 lines, unlimited talk text data. Plus you get Netflix for free, so I can cancel my Netflix so I will save there too.

I have asked myself that time and time again. I now do work on a cruise ship and have no cell service but do have blazing wifi. With Sprint, not using an S8 or one of the 3 or so of their other phones that support Calling Plus, I'm completely in the dark for texts and calls for days at a time. These features are semi standard nowadays and are a requirement for me whereas before they we're a convenience. Believe me, I would much rather stay with Sprint.

One final question I have posed, though it is a little unusual, but I'd like to know if my wife's as yet unactivated, Android One (Project Fi) Moto X4 will work on TMobile as well as my Pixel 2 xl...and have all of the features. ??

This is extremely interesting as both carriers are cdma. I don't have one of those phones. I've been told though, that a phone needs a specific software update to enable calling plus, which makes me doubtful of success.
What about simultaneous talk/surf, @Deuces?

Bummer about your experience with Fi. I don't think I've experienced those things yet. But I'm considering TMobile straight away based on our recent average data usage. We've been on unlimited for years with Sprint so for us to reprogram our habits into the hassle of finding and registering for (sometimes suspect) free WiFi networks feels like too much.
I agree, we just want good consistent service. The only downgrade I can see for us at TMobile with ONE plan would be streaming capped at 480p. Am I right?
Curious, why didn't you go back to Verizon, @tacopimp?
