Any hope for an unlocked bootloader? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

It's been more than six months since release. This is the first phone I've owned where the bootloader wasn't unlocked within a month. I don't mind being on stock, as I like some of the built-in features (just not TouchJizz) like the fingerprint scanner and so on. Would be nice to have custom ROMs, though.

It's verizons bs

[Q] Why was Evo 4g's bootloader locked?

So, I've searched and not been able to find an answer to a question. Why was the original Evo's bootloader locked in the Gingerbread OTA? It seemed like HTC was beginning the process of keeping the bootloaders unlocked, then WAM. We get an update that broke more than it seemed to fix and killed my battery life. I was not rooted, but my phone's overall performance was so poor after the OTA, I was ready to root it. Then, I find out there is no way to do so.
It is annoying that they do an update that hurts my phone's performance, and at the same time, block any chance I have of improving the performance.
So, have we got an answer as to why it was locked?
Thanks!
Because Sprint has the final say so on it, and they wanted it locked....
HTC stated they would be locking the bootloaders on their phones. There was a small public outcry, and HTC said they would have an unlock solution for their future phones. At this point the GB update for the Evo was finalized, and was too far in the game to make a change. Maybe the Evo will be on the "list" for HTC to unlock the bootloader. But it really only has about 5 months left on its support cycle (18 months for updates), so who knows.
Thanks!
So, it was a Sprint thing and not HTC that locked it. That makes more sense. Thank you.
I emailed HTC referencing their decision to not lock future devices and requesting help unlocking my bootloader. Here is the response I received:
I understand you would like the bootloader unlocked on your EVO. While the statement notes that locked bootloaders will not be occurring on future devices, the official policy is still being reviewed as it pertains to existing devices. Please keep an eye on htc .com and twitter .com/htc for the latest news.

I guess that enough for a little hope. We'll see what happens...
I just want to point out for those new to the Evo, that the Evo's bootloader has always been locked since Eclair on launch day. This is not new with this update, after each ota update a new root exploit has had to been found to get past the locked bootloader.
wfrandy, thank you for that clarification.
The 4G's bootloader is not locked like the 3D's. The 4G's bootloader still isn't unlocked but it is a lot easier to circumvent. This article explains it better than I can.

This is not true. HTC controls the bootloader on their devices. Sprint just gets the img file from them and they add it to their own updates, They don't get the source or the ability to change it in any way, aside from switching to a different version.
Besides that, look at the release date in the bootloader menu... it says March 8, It was developed and released BEFORE that announcement. And THAT is the real reason why it's still locked. The only reason the update came out in June was because Sprint took forever to lock down everything that they COULD and put in all their crappy bloatware and whatnot. In the future when HTC develops and releases the next version of the hboot, I would guess that it would be unlocked from that point forward.
But again, nothing Sprint can do about it, other than choose not to release it.

[Q] I'm thinking about buying this phone.

I'm on verizon's network, and I was wondering where the roms are for this phone? I have a gs4 (mdk version), and If I buy this phone I will root it. After is rooted, is the bootloader unlocked? This phone has been out for a while, so there should be alot of roms for it. Thanks

hello my friend. this phone as locked bootloader(only t-mobile doesnt),if u root your phone u wont unlock it just root.
about roms they start shownig up as soon someone manage to unlock the bootloader install the custom recovery and so on.
What the poster before me said is true. However, even the T-Mobile ROM section is pretty empty. The ROMS we DO have are all dying as well. As in, scarce or no updates.
If you are buying the phone, just buy it for what it is. I'm not keeping my hopes up that the bootloader would be unlocked and even if it is all or most of the devs would have moved on to other devices. As a stock phone which is just rooted, it is a fine device. big nice screen in a small-ish form factor. I use it easily with one hand and my hands are average size. Battery life is also great for me, I usually get 4-5 hours of on screen time with varying levels of usage. It also comes with some nice software features such as the dual app on a screen thingy . The camera is also good (to me) it really does focus faster than any other phone I have before. On top of all that it is one of the more unique looking devices out there.
It is a great phone. I am running it without any root for one and a half week. Superb camera, great display and satisfying performance. Just someone said above me, use it for what it is.
Thanks for the info. What the hell is up with all the locked bootloaders? I know it has to do with security, but come on. Anyway, thanks again.
I bought the note 3 before I bought this phone I have. It was just to big for my hands. It was a two handed phone for me. I had it for two weeks, then got the gs4. Thanks for the info

Ignorant

Been doing this for years check my start date I probably installed 300- 400 roms, rooted over 60 phones, so I know how to search with out being a dumb ass but is there a guide to root att note 4 edge? I tried google, you tube and this site. Obviously if roms are offered then there must be a way to root. I applaud developers for making roms, I'm just shocked at lack of rooting. Since my gf's s5 seems lack of info, my s4 has tons of ways to root, I get technology get harder but seems less people care. I supported so many developers during the years for their great work and time both on forums and with $. Id love for one of the developer of current offered roms to tell us how they installed it. I know its not their job but we need to know to enjoy their works of art.
No ROMs on the AT&T version. Root is temporary. They are still working on it (last I checked a few days ago). It's a tight secure phone. There's an app called Kingroot that only works on 4.4.4 and if you've updated the recent update, you can't roll back your device from 5.0.1 to 4.4.4.
AT&T has the bootloader locked and the write protection so tight its just not possible (at the moment and some could argue that it may never be possible).
I gave up on it awhile back. And I don't think it's an arguable point to say that it'll never happen.
it'll never happen, move on.
honestly it not tight or secure. I kinda left the whole rom thing since s5 because of all the issues, but recently (this is off topic) my gf gained a female stalker, she could dump our phones, get EVERYTHING off our phones and WIRELESSLY , so my only option is to keep switching os till cops catch her. She uses a cellebrightg device and a femtocell devive. she clones our phone, we changed numbers within a week she has new ones. Only way to keep her out of our phones would be to keep changing roms or just to restore a rom that has not been infected with her software. This would eventually tire her out having to drive within 150 ft of my house to install software daily, when I could do a simple restore with all my apps and settings in place
Don't think you read the above posts. The AT&T version of the Note 4 doesn't have permanent root which means you cannot put custom ROMs on it yet. You can't change the OS on it. Several people are supposedly working on it, but with it being almost a year ago that this phone was released, many believe permanent root for this phone will not be achieved.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
ONe option would be to sell the AT&T phones and get a T-Mobile one which has several different ROMs available. The TM phone works on AT&T, except for band 29. I don't know how important band 29 is. I've read there is very little use of band 29 on AT&T, but where it is used, it is suppose to be quite fast, from what I read.

Questions about bootloader unlocking before I make the purchase.

Hello all, I'm interested in purchasing the RN5 Pro, and I've seen a lot of bootloader unlocking related problems. I would like to flash Lineage OS on it. But, how long could this unlock process take? Could they deny me unlocking forever? I apologise for the ad nauseum, because I know that this question has been circling around quite a bit.
Thanks!
as i know, it takes 15 day to grant permission to unlock bootloader (now it's 2months, im not sure)
Then the unlock process just takes about under 15 mins
dont be worry too much about it, it's really simple and ez
I tried to unlock the phone yesterday and the unlock tool showed 720 hours waiting period, which is 30 days, and I retried today and it was still counting (708 hours or so)
I heard some people getting 1440 hours, but don't worry, once you unlock the bootloader everything becomes available, and by the way, you could like MIUI, it has most of the root functions without rooting (Restricting wifi/data from specific apps for example and many many customizations).
I would say get the phone, as soon as you get it apply for the unlock, and try MIUI until you can get to unlock the device.

Thanks for the info! Appreciated. As far as MiUI goes, I don't dislike the look and feel much, but there are advertisements and spammy notifications everywhere, and that to me is unacceptable. On top of that, I'm a privacy conscious guy, so I don't know the kind of background tracking. So I'll most likely switch to Lineage if I get the chance to.
That really depends if your account has authorizations previously. if you have got authorizations previously for any of device. you can unlock any device without any wait. some times device association can take a little time. only if said device was associated with any other account previously

Never owned a Mi product personally before, I don't have an account. And will be buying a new device if I decide to do so.

i have owned multiple xiaomi devices and i was easily able to unlock it without any delay. may be because i activated devices only with the same account is already authorized to unlock.
whatsapp Acts funny on all custom roms / AOSP, that seems like whatsapp has made sure to be this way!
of you wana enjoy AOSP roms, buy A2 6X
you can stimply root it and keep the rom for good!
Hey there! The general bootloader unlocking wait time is 30 or even 60 days since the 1. September. It can be shorter, or there is no wait time at all if you have used a Mi account to unlock other devices before. But it depends on their mysteriously mysterious system. From what I read, it can make a difference if a phone number is associated with the account. But I wouldn't count on it for new accounts. Better expect the full and brutal 30 days unlock period.
As you mentioned privacy, it needs to be said that MIUI - the stock ROM of nearly all Xiaomi devices - is quite talkative and sends back data to their servers. They hide it in their terms of services, except that you are prompted to accept these terms of services once you set up your device. If you don't mind it, it should be okay and you can use your device normally until you can unlock the bootloader. After all, Google is also there in form of their Play Services and watch your activity as well. Buuuut, if you truly want to preserve your privacy, it's best not to use the device normally until you get to unlock your bootloader. Personally that is what I did, but rather because I really need and like to have root access on phones I own. In my humble opinion, the increased bootloader unlock time is there to force users to use MIUI. Previously normal times were 3, 7 and 14 days. In conjunction with the ads they want to force onto their users, and the data they collect, this just makes sense if you ask me. Despite this, and to mention positive points again, their phones are still really great value for the money. The Redmi Note 5 has excellent battery life, good mid-range phone performance, takes nice pictures as well and is basically just a pleasant device. Though, if you plan to use LineageOS, you will need to install one of the Mi A2 camera or Google Camera ports if you want to use LineageOS without having to sacrifice camera quality. Actually, with the Google Camera port the pictures of this device get even prettier than they normally look like with the MIUI camera! Might be a matter of taste after all, but I tested it myself and can just confirm what others said about the awesome picture quality.

Question Unlock/Root questions

What's up guys? It's been quite a while since I've been on here. I've switched back to Android from iOS. Picked up a Oneplus 9 Pro today. Trying to figure out what in the **** is going on in Android now. Seems things have changed drastically since I was last here (Oneplus One)! I feel like I'm in /r/jailbreak! I have a T-Mobile Oneplus 9, so I guess I have to submit to Oneplus to be able to unlock the bootloader??? I've done it, but do I really have to wait one to 2 weeks for them to reply before I can root!? Is this how Android has become now?

Welcome back.
I'll just address the bootloader thing.
Normally, you can unlock instantly the bootloader, no need to wait for anything or request for anything. But in your case, T-Mobile, well, provider locked, so you need to request an unlock from them AFAIK.

I haven't heard of any way around the wait time. This whole mess is the reason I bought this phone from OnePlus even though I have T-Mobile. Last phone I bought from T-Mobile and I had the same frustrated reaction you're having now. Hopefully they get back to you faster than expected.

Yup. It’s very frustrating! I guess I should’ve done my homework a little better! I probably wouldn’t have gone this route!
