Phone not charging or stopping charging - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

As the titles states, my phone doens't want to charge the first time I plug it to the original charger. It can stay for hours without charging 1%. I have to reboot and then it'll charge fine. I called google support and they told me it will be fixed in the next updates. Anyone else is having those problems? I just return it if it's just me.

I've had weirdness with charging for sure. Seemingly mostly with the charger that came with it. Mine will say "5 minutes until charged," but I'll be at like 86%. If I unplug and let it settle for a second, it will go back to 84% or whatever, then seems fine when I plug it back in again.

I've been using this Magqi charging dock and magnetic pad and it's been hit or miss. Sometimes just fine, other times won't charge at all. Wife is having the same problem. We both have a Pixel 2 XL.

ok it happened to me before (you clicked something by mistake )
just go to settings -system- developer options -select usb configuration- charging
if this doesn't work
maybe it is something else

I didn't turn on nothing by mistake, it's just not charging. I did a factory reset and seems to work fine until now ( charged just one time ). I'll update the thread if it happens again. I think something was messed up during the November update. I hope it's just a software bug because it's really annoying to reboot the phone Everytime

It happened again after factory reset. It's quite annoying

I've had mine 4 days and it happened to me the first time this morning.
To fix it I turned the phone off, started charging whilst off and then turned back on. Luckily it was back to charging correctly.

I today I now have the slow charging issue (on the supplied charger)
I ran the battery down fully last night and put it on charge at 2 am.
When I left for work at 6:30 am the battery had only charged to 67%, that's 4.5 hours.
Given all the other posts concerning this subject it does not seem uncommon

Yeah just got my phone last night and its happening for me too. Will charge for a minute or two then stops. Going to try the charge while off deal mentioned above and see what happens.

It's quite annoying for me... I hope Google is going to fix this soon. Seems like a software bug

Here is what happens with me.
I have the stock charger with a 6.5' Cable Creations C to C cable.
Any charges that happen with my battery lower than 30%, I have to constantly watch it to make sure it's charging.
If not, I have to unplug and replug. This happens several times between 0-30%
After 30, it seems to pick up fine..
Edit: Forgot to mention, when below 30%, it stops charging because, I take the power off it and all the sudden, it loses 2-3%

Not sure I've seen a situation where the supplied charger didn't charge the phone at all like some have mentioned, but it definitely seems a lot slower than the charging time for the Pixel XL. It's offset in a big way by the much improved battery life I guess, but it certainly doesn't feel like quick charge, at least by 2017 standards.
However when I use the charger that came with my Pixel C, It charges noticeably quicker. I know the Pixel C never sold in huge numbers, and I haven't run any comparison tests here, but has anyone else that owns one noticed better performance with its charger compared to the one that was bundled with their Pixel 2 XL?

Tried Nexus 5x stock charger and it didnt do anything. Not sure whats wrong with our chargers, my Pixel 2 XL always goes to 98%max maybe 99%. Another weird thing that happend. I decided to fully discharge my phone until it shut off for the first cycle(first day I got it to calibrate battery). When I plugged the OEM charger in it showed the symbol that it doesnt have enough power to turn on(needs to charge to 5% or whatever it is), waited 1 hr, 2 hrs same thing. Unplugged, plugged back in, hard reset, bootloader and nothing. Same symbol. Only way to get it back charging was to use a cheap USB A to C cable I got from walmart, plug that into my Nexus 6 charger base and it finally started charging...??? WTF

Same issue
Looks like this is an issue with the November security patch.
Same thing has happened to me on my Pixel 2 XL and i have three different official Type C wall chargers from google (6p, XL (1st gen) and they will not work, however it will work with the quick charge connector in my car (Type A to Type C).
Reviewing the internet other people have the same issue and all seem post November update. I did a factory reset etc to troubleshoot with no luck.
Only thing i have yet to attempt is enroll for the android beta program and force update to 8.1 to see if it resolves the issue.
i live in Dubai and i don't have official support from google nor am i able to contact them, if some one could kindly post an update if they have tried contacting google and got a confirmation that its a S/W issue.

Bump.
Sooo, I woke up last night and saw a message on my phone that said something like, your device is corrupt, etc. Now my phone will not charge... The phone seems fine otherwise, everything seems to work, no more errors or anything, but, two stock pixel 2 chargers and neither charge the phone. However, if I plug it into a computer, it charges. Anyone have any idea of what is going on? I've rebooted, cleared cache from apps (not from twrp though), nothing seems to help.
About my phone: April update, unlocked, rooted stock. The only things I'm running are substratum with the swift dark theme, pixel launcher mods for Virus icon pack, viper audio mod, adaway, greenify, things like that. Nothing major with the exception of the theme. I even disabled/uninstalled the theme and rebooted. The problem is still there. Unless I get this fixed ASAP, I guess I'm calling Google for a replacement...
Please help!

Almost sounds like a hardware/port issue. About the only 2 things I could suggest is...1. Fastboot the factory image again with the -w flag removed. 2. Factory reset, which, as you know, bites because you have to set everything up again.

Ugh, I thought I might need to try one of those. I'll see what fastbooting the image does. Thanks!

Your description exactly matches my issue with a week old Pixel 2. It won't charge using OEM charger below 30% battery. I have to reset the phone, sometimes reboot works but not all the time. Even safe mode won't work done times. It's frustrating.

I'm having charging issues that started when I installed Android P. At times when the phone is plugged in either to wall charger or car charger it indicates it's charging but actually isn't. Only solution I found was to reboot. I should note this only an Android P issue for me, Oreo didn't exhibit this problem. Battery percentage doesn't matter, it could be at 25% or 95% so I'm thinking my issue is just a P beta bug.

Anyone got a solution to this issue?

After updating to Nougat, Fast Charge works intermittently. Kinda.

Greetings all, I've been a longtime reader of xda, but never a poster. As this is my first post. After upgrading to Nougat I now have issues with fast charging. 98% of the time when I plug in my charger, it will switch between fast charging and charging in one second intervals with vibration. If it does decide to "fast charge", it will charge at regular speed while displaying fast charge. HOWEVER, It fast charges as normal with the phone powered off. I tried new high quality micro usb's and trying different fast charging samsung adapters, and doing a factory data reset. I have tried toggling fast charging in settings too. It seems to be software related. I am assuming there aren't any custom Nougat roms yet, as I cant find them here. Has anyone heard or experienced this, and have any tricks to try? Thanks in advance!
I've been having issues after installing Nougat where occasionally it will go from charging to not charging back and forth about five to ten times intermittently, though I have noticed some issues with fast charging as well.
@grandomegabosses That is exactly the issue I am having. When it does finally settle down it will tell me ridiculous amount of time to complete full charge, like 1.5 hours when I'm already at 20%. If you see the same, try charging with phone off... It should be WAY faster... Thank for your reply.
I had issues a few times where my phone was really hot after being on the charger for an hour or so just to find out that it only charged up 10% or 15% more than it was when I put it on the charger. This happened to me once with it powered off...my phone only charged to 79% when it should have had plenty of time to reach full. Powering off the phone before charging seems to help 99% of the time. Hoping my S6 gets updated again, or they'll forget about us and it'll catch on fire one day. Sad we still can't get updates from directly from Google compiled in a cloud based server @ Samsung with appropriate kernel and have a flashable package of Samsung Apps and interfaces, that could be downloaded from your Samsung account and verified by Knox. We'd be on Android Oreo already if it were setup that way...
Okay, so I did have this issue, but I've easily solved the issue by flashing stock via Odin. Nand erase all, I did an efs clear just because. Also, checked the phone bootloader update. But after that, everything worked perfect.

Pixel 2 XL Stops Charging Randomly

This happens every now and then, but my pixel sometimes will charge for say 2% then stop charging entirely until I replug the charger. This has been happening since the second day I got the phone and it doesn't happen too often. I'm just wondering if this is a known software issue or is this an issue with the charging brick? I really hope it's not a phone issue since I got a pretty good screen and don't want to RMA. I have also tried factory resetting the device, recalibrating the battery, tried different outlets
I have actually had this problem on my first xl, I've had to send it back after 3 months because sometimes i'd plug it in go back half hour later and noticed it's either not moved at all or charging slower than it should be, like you say doesn't happen often but it shouldn't do it, I've never owned a smartphone before that has exhibited these weird charging behaviours, had my replacement about a week, so far so good, but time will tell, if it does it again it's going back again.
I have the same issue

Fast Charging Stop working after latest Android P update

I was wondering if this is a temporary problem, (before it appends sometimes) but now, my phone never "Fast Charges".
I'm using the cable and charger that's in the original box.
Is there any solution to this?
My phone: No root, security patch June 5, latest beta update.
How many different outlets have you tried it in? Also, I had an issue with fast charging as well on the P beta so I came back to Oreos.
I only have the issue with the pixel on the beta, the other one that I have in the normal build works like a charm (same charger).
Have no idea if this is a known bug...

I'm sure everyone would be reporting it if it were. Very strange though. Why not try another charger out of curiosity to see if it works with it? I'd be interested to see if it did
I am having the same problem since the latest Android P/9 upgrade. Charges slowly with different OEM chargers.
May be placebo. Just because you don't get the notification doesn't mean it's not fast charging. Only way to really know is download ampere and compare charging rates to a phone that does report fast charging.
My phone doesn't get any type of message anymore after certain mods, however, my phone still charges at roughly 3.0 amps
Hello,
I can confim this issue.
Google Pixel with Android P Beta 3 is not fast charging.
I tested it with a power meter and it showed 8 Watts, which is very low compared to fast charging which uses 18 Watts.
Before I joined the beta program it worked just fine.
Using default power brick btw.
Can also confirm it's not working on DP3. Doesn't matter charge level, cable or power block it's only drawing about 500ma to 800ma. It is agonizingly slow. Fell asleep waiting for some power. Woke up from the nap and thought, "Alright, it's gotta be at 100%." Nope just 53%
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
No problems here, both before and after DP3 OTA and then a factory reset to clear up some fingerprint scanner issues.
EDIT: Try a backup and factory reset...
I figured mine out, I think. I'm assuming there is some type of thermal throttling in the Quickcharge spec, I haven't looked.
It's hot where I live and the aluminum back on the phone seems to absorb every bit of heat when I go outside. It's about 100°F (38°C) at 8:20PM so it never really cools off. When I'm back inside it takes a while to cool off especially if I put it on a charger.

So the only solution it's a factory reset? :/
Can anyone confirm that the factory reset does in fact bring fast charging back? I've had about enough slow charging.
Seriously considering getting out of the preview program to get fast charging back. As someone said, it's not just slow, it is excruciatingly slow!
I'm curious myself if a factory reset fixes it or not. The regular charging is way too slow.
Can confirm this on DP4. Has anyone figured this out? It's driving me nuts. I'm about to flash back to Oreo despite P being the most meaningful Android version upgrade in recent years.
Factory reset didn't solve it for me either.
Fast charging works while charging from my wife's pixel 2 charger. And her phone Fast charges too while using my charger.

Same boat here... Last week with my wife charger started fast charging, but not with mine...
Flashing Android P DP5 has not fixed this. Admittedly, I have flashed using flashall.bat without the "-w" in order to avoid a complete wipe. However, I can't imagine this is relevant to this issue as this isn't a dirty flash, but cleanly replacing the prior OS. So what's up?
I read on another forum booting into safe mode and charging will restore the fast charging. I did it and it worked for my Essential phone. Boot to safe mode and charge for a bit and reboot and it should be working again. The post said if not leave it in safe mode till fully charged and then reboot.

I figure you got it already so before anyone else asks. From the very first search result on Google.
With the device powered on, press and hold the*Power button*(located on the right-edge) until the Power off prompt appears then release.
Touch and hold*Power off*until the Reboot to safe mode prompt appears then release.
Tap*OK*to confirm.*The restart process may take up to 45 seconds to complete.
Upon restart, "Safe mode" appears in the lower-left of the unlock/home screen.
Now you're in Safe Mode.

Pixel XL3 wont charge at all. Turns on/shuts off

Hello im new to the forum, a friend of mine suggested this is the best place to post this so here it goes:
I bought a used Pixel XL3 from ebay, it arrived today and i immediately turned the phone on, it had about 25% battery in it, i used it for most of the day, when i got home i tried charging it with the original charger and when i connected the phone it didnt show it was charging at all. I tried 2 other charges/cables and the same result. I know the phone did detect the cable was being connected because every time i connected the usb cable the phone kind of blinked, but it didnt charge.
I researched on Reddit and someone witha similar problem suggested i completely drain the battery and then try and charge it again. I drained the battery and now when i connect the phone it shows a gray battery icon with a lightning bolt in it for a few seconds, then it boots to the google logo and then it shuts down again. It does this over and over again.
Im at a complete loss of what to try or do next. The phone did work when i took it out of the box! I cannot RMA it to Google since im not the original buyer of the phone and im also out of the US.
Any assistance would be really appreciated!
Try a wireless charger?
If you plug it in when off does it charge? Leave it charging for as long as you can then boot up.
I've had this problem and although it seems like a software issue there's no solution in sight and many people experiencing it.
Once you have the phone on check for a notification that says "Charging connected device via USB" - choose that - select "This device" (instead of "Connected device") Not a fix, but I"ve been getting by doing this and it allows me to charge. I am close to getting a replacement.

Welcome. Both ideas of turning the phone off and charging from there, and wireless charging are good ones. Once you get a decent charge on the battery, go into Recovery and do a factory reset. If the problem presents itself after a reset you may have a hardware issue like the USB port itself or the battery. If the phone is bootloader unlocked (or unlockable) you may have a few more options. What are the first 2 digits of your IMEI?
I'm having the exact same problem with my Google pixel 3 XL. I don't know if it's the charging port or it's because I'm running Android Q beta 4 and it's been happening for 2 days now. I'm going to try a factory reset tomorrow night if nothing else works then I'll update it here.

Ok, so have you tried wireless charging to rule out the USB interface? Hopefully a fresh install with latest P will get you back up and running.

General Wireless Charging - No Longer Working

Has anyone had the problem where wireless charging just..... Stops working? Completely?
Phone charged fine wirelessly for a few days, then this morning I woke up and it had stopped at exactly 70%.... Strange, I thought maybe it got bumped or something at some point ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Fast forward to this evening and the phone will no longer charge on any of the wireless chargers I own. I've restarted, checked settings, etc. The phone doesn't detect when it is placed on a Qi charger now, it's just as if I set it down on any other surface.
I saw a few Reddit threads with people running into this but nothing conclusive or comprehensive. Someone posted that they were in touch with Google support and that they are aware of the issue and claim a fix is on the way "soon".
It doesn't *sound* like a hardware issue, but wtf, why would that functionality just totally stop working at random? I really don't want to try a factory reset but... I may just do it for science.
I have not had this problem...yet.
Been a few days now, anyone else having this issue? Driving me nuts

Did yo utry the reset yet? You have to try the reset device to rule out software problem. If it persists, then it's entirely possible that a chip or component failed.
I had the Soli chips go bad within a month of getting my 4 XL and I had it replaced under warranty. You shouldn't have to put up with no wireless charging - that's a key functionality. I would let Google replace your P6P.

Yeah..... I factory reset today and it still doesn't work at all. Time to start the replacement process. Bah humbug :-/?
Please post an update if a software solution presents itself, like if Google provides a fix before you RMA. I don't own a wireless charger, it's mad sketchy to read this and not be able to test mine
I never had any problems with my wireless chargers. It should also be noted that the phone doesn't charge full on purpose if you have adaptive charging enabled (you need a wake up timer for that).
But since NONE of your wireless chargers work anymore - AND you did a factory reset, it sounds like a hardware issue.
Wtf. Just after a couple days of owning the device.
Go RMA.
---
In case this is a compatibility issue, can you tell us which chargers you used? Name, model?
Maybe this will happen again. You never know.
Mine will, on occasion, charge for part of the night and then decide to stop at some point. I'm pretty sure I'm not moving it in my sleep, since I don't sleep that soundly.
I did notice for the first time last night, though, that it finally decided to enter the "adaptive" charge cycle where it does the "full by alarm time" thing - which was cool.
Thankfully, I generally still have about half battery left at the end of the day, so even if it isn't charging to full for me it's not a huge deal. That, and working at home helps too.
So it's pretty interesting, there are a non-trivial number of folks on Redit with this issue.
Battery share does not work either.
After effing around for a few days the phone now actually recognizes that it is on a wireless charger again, but, it never charges. In battery settings it simply states "Connected, not charging" and FREAKS OUT, that message flickers on and off crazy fast.
So..... I guess this is better than not recognizing a charger at all? Lmao.
As for brands I'm using, the Iniu 15w charger on Amazon, I've tried the og Pixel stand and a couple generic pads. All of these charge my other devices without issue, it's just the Pixel that won't work still.
I am likely going to rma this weekend. I got super excited when the random update dropped the other day but it didn't fix my charging issue.

The one time my phone stopped wireless charging in the middle of the night (at exactly 70%) was the last time it ever wirelessly charged. So weird that it worked just fine for several days.
I feel like it's a tossup between a hardware issue and software/firmware at this point. Either way, it sucks!

Did you contact Google about this? (not RMA, simply "I have problems with that, can you help me with that?") - maybe it's just Google being Google and sabotaging third party wireless chargers. I have one small 5 Watt charger and it works.
It might be worth a try for you to get ahold of a Pixel Stand charger (1. Gen or sth) and see if that resolves your issues (maybe a friends?) - or, of course, just RMA it.
Now this issue has hit my phone, a Pixel 4, see here!
