Audio quality in 5T? - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

How is the audio quality from 3.5mm jack?

I use my Oneplus 5T with my V-Moda LP2's and they can surprisingly power these head phones better than my previous phone (iPhone 6). I tried turning on the equalizer but a lot of distortion takes place. The EQ should be ok for in-ear earphones but for high impedance headphones running it without the EQ is best. I even have a pair of Anker Bluetooth Earphones which play very well as well. I am getting a much better battery life on my bluetooth earphones with the 5T and I'm using APTX HD with it, but that depends if your earphones can support it. Well its android and if you want some more power u can always use Viper4Android or A.R.I.S.E sound system

hmm i find that my anker bluetooth headphones (soundbuds surge) max volume is much lower than when i pair them to my razer phone actually. i find bluetooth on boh the OP 5T and OP5 much quieter when paired with any headphone or speaker etc

Only tested briefly with a pair of RHA MA750s and was very impressed. Clarity and detail seem to be on par with my HTC 10 which was very good. Very similar sound signature without any equalizing.
Not really sold on the stock equalizer. Default enhancements seem to just bump every frequency up and sacrifice clarity a bit. The 7 band EQ will be nice to play around with though.
Overall, surprisingly very good audio out of the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Never even thought of using the stock EQ, as the first Magisk module I installed was viper4android, but the output from the jack is excellent.

I use Neutron Player with HiRes Enabled and the Sound is great.

Somewhat related to audio: how does the 3.5 mm port keep headphone jacks? Is it through mere friction like on the 3/3t, or does it now click/ somehow lock it?

Appears to be a pin or some sort that works by combination of friction and clicking into place. All I can say is it is by far the most secure/snug port I have ever experienced on a device.

I thought I was the only one that thought the headphone jack was held more tightly than on other devices ive used. Such a great thing to have.
Atleast now I don't have to worry about the jack snapping out often during train travel.

In the download section of Magisk. Make sure you get the one by Ahrion....all of his sound mods are designed to and can be used together without conflict plus he updates them quite regularly. Before installing V4A I would recommend downloading and flashing Ainur Sauron sound mod (even though it is Magisk Module it must be flashed from TWRP), which Ahrion is part of the team. SAURON MK I.IV.II
More info on Ainur Sauron https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/soundmod-ainur-audio-t3450516

Plugged into my car. Sounds phenomenal. Just as good as the dac in my i7+. A step below V20, but still, very impressed!!!

I am new to the OnePlus family coming from years of using Samsung. In the past I have found different mods for increasing the headphone volume. Is anyone aware of any such mods for the 5T?
Thanks again,
Brian

Better than my Galaxy S6 which was my primary music player. Everything is nice, loud, and makes sh*tty headphones sound decent

Have you installed viper4android yet? If not I would start there so you get the most out of your audio. The gain adjustments may just provide enough increase for your liking.
If viper isn't enough, the easiest way is to download and flash the kernel from the following then install kernel adiutor from the play store and use sound control to increase the volume.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/newkernel-t3710363
....or you can use a root explorer to open system/etc/mixer_paths_tasha.xml and look towards the bottom for the following.
Code:
<path name="headphones">
<ctl name="SLIM RX2 MUX" value="AIF4_PB" />
<ctl name="SLIM RX3 MUX" value="AIF4_PB" />
<ctl name="SLIM_6_RX Channels" value="Two" />
<!-- #ifdef VENDOR_EDIT-->
<!-- [email protected],2017/3/14,use 24bits to get rid of 16bits innate noise -->
<ctl name="SLIM_6_RX Format" value="S24_LE" />
<!-- #endif VENDOR_EDIT-->
<ctl name= "RX INT1_2 MUX" value="RX2" />
<ctl name= "RX INT2_2 MUX" value="RX3" />
<ctl name="RX INT1 DEM MUX" value="CLSH_DSM_OUT" />
<ctl name="RX INT2 DEM MUX" value="CLSH_DSM_OUT" />
<ctl name="RX1 Mix Digital Volume" value="78" />
<ctl name="RX2 Mix Digital Volume" value="78" />
</path>
Change the RX1 and RX2 Mix Digital values to your liking. I have mine set at 84 and have not tested higher because there is no need. I love volume and it is more than ample for me.

Is it a better DAC than the 5? Pocket now still hasn't done a audio comparison and I would like to know if they have made some improvements.

Better than my wife's OP3 but not a good as my HTC 10. It'll drive basic headphones and whatnot but something with higher resistance like my HD600 don't play very loud. It's okay levels but it can't push much past that

[Q] [B]About EXACTLY what boomsound is[/B]

Hey everybody,
so I wanted to get down to what means exactly the Boomsound system employs. I heard it has a general run of the mill DAC as seen on the Note 3, but it does have a dedicated amplifier unit. I'm wondering if this amplifier unit is used to amplify both the headphone output and the "boomsound" speaker output.
Also, Beats employs an equalizer, with
Beats ON = amplified highs and lows (exciting)
Beats OFF = amplified mids (supposedly boring to the average listener) and recessed highs and lows (which are supposed to sound exciting)
and this is obviously a strong marketing ploy made to make people think that anything without Beats sounds boring because when people listen to music w/ "beats off" it has strong mids and weak highs and lows. So really on Beats devices, the music sounds unnatural regardless of beats on or off.
I'm hoping that HTC doesn't employ this tactic, and that with Boomsound "off" it really means its not adding anything extra like amplified highs and lows while amplifying mids; WHILE, still getting that greatly needed amplification from the dedicated amplifier unit. I recall that HTC One phones get >2 volts going through the headphone jack while every other phone gets <1.5 volts.
If anyone knows what exactly is happening with boomsound please let us know!
If you untick BoomSound when using headphones it's just the stock back sound like in aosp roms...

Does the headphone jack makes hissing/ static noise?

Coming from Lenovo p2 which has similar designs ( both are from lemoto and the headphone jack and antenna seems to be in similar position). Lenovo p2 has this annoying static noise while using in-ear headphone, yes I say in-ear headphone because it won't happen on earbuds, only iems. I guess that's because earbuds have higher impedance? It's extremely audible when playing music at low volume. Anyway back to my original question, does such issue exists on moto z play? I did some Google there seems to be people complaining about this but I want confirmation from you guys. Try listening to some music at low volume using IEM and tell me if there is any hissing noise please. Thanks in advance
Yes it does - more so if you enable the stock equalizer. It is quite obvious if you listen to audio book or speeches in low volume.
Nougat update does have minimized it. Listening to music in low volume is cleaner.
However - the sound signature thro' audio jack is excellent - deep n solid feel to it
No static on any of my IEMs at volume steps 0,1 and 2 playing through Apple Music and PowerAmp.

These are my work arounds:
1. Installed Poweramp app
2. I use Poweramp in-built equalizer
3. I don't use default equalizer while using headphones.
My headphones:
1. audio technica ath-m50x (headphones)
2. shure se 215 (in ear type)
3. jaybird X3 ( blue tooth)
If you root it (I have not rooted this moto) Arise viper4A is an excellent option.
Please note the sound signature and audio output via headphone jack is excellent. It can even drive audio technica ath-m50x, which has heavy drivers with ease. If you don't use the system equalizer, post nougat update the hiss is almost not there.
This phone is an excellent value for money. I am using it for more than 6 month. It has a heft to it but feels solid in-hand. Buttery smooth, insane battery and zero heating (except while charging). I am very happy!

Which ROM has the best audio quality from the 3.5mm headphone jack?

I have been trying a lot of custom ROMs recently on my Z2 Plus and I noticed the audio quality from the 3.5mm headphone jack is not particularly good on any of them. When listening to a piece of music or a podcast with quiet sections, a crackling noise is audible that makes it hard to hear any detail in the audio. The problem is most notable at low volume levels of just a few notches. I tried disabling any audio enhancements like the 'AudioFX' app that comes with Lineage-based ROMs, but this did not make much difference.
I listened to the same MP3 files on my ZTE Axon 7 and the audio is crystal-clear with no crackling present in the slightest. I'm using a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50 monitor headphones.
I know the ZTE Axon 7 has a Hi-Fi audio DAC which might explain why it sounds so much clearer, but I didn't expect the difference to be this much... Is the bad audio quality just a limitation of the ZUK Z2's hardware, or is it something that the custom ROMs are not implementing correctly?
Which ROMs have the clearest audio quality from the headphone jack?

Thanks, I actually tried both of these tips before making this thread but I wasn't overwhelmed by the difference in audio quality... When playing music I still hear the crackling/static kind of noise during the quiet parts. I think it's probably a limitation of the hardware more than anything else.
Do you guys think using a 3.5mm to Type-C adapter with a built-in DAC would solve this problem? Then I could play music through the Type-C port instead of using the headphone jack.

You can always use a external dac via usb c port. Someone from zukfans.eu said it is working. But external dacs are expensive. Type c to 3.5mm jack adapters wont do anything if it does not have any dac inbuilt

Okay, thanks. The reason I mentioned the Type-C adapters is because I thought some of them were marketed as having an inbuilt DAC. But that could be wrong and the ZUK might not have compatibly to use it anyway.
Yeah, I don't like the thought of buying an external DAC since I don't intend on keeping this phone much longer anyway. I'm just having trouble choosing my next handset since the smartphone market is so stagnant at the moment. LG V30 would be good for audio quality but it uses PWM which hurts my eyes too much.
try paranoid rom nougat version, it was the only rom in which I felt the audio quality was better. ZUK 2 clearly have poor hardware, my old moto g3 sounds much better.

Headphone Volume Boost

I'm editing the mixer_paths but the volume is not getting louder has anyone had any success boosting type c headphone volume on pixel 2 xl ?
Use a different DAC dongle.
The supplied one only puts out 300mV on low impedance headphones.
Mixer paths won't affect external sound card gains as far as I know.

[DISCUSSION] Headphone Jack performance

I wanted to start a thread discussing the performance of the headphone jack. I'm a bit disappointed considering Sony's audiophile history with their walkmans and LDAC codec.
Yes, I'm nit picking about a $13XX dollar phone but for this price, I was expecting a bit more that just average performance.
For comparison I do have a LG V40 with it's quad dac and it powers my audio technicas perfectly fine with High-Impedance mode.
On the MK ii, I don't get the full sound with out an external dac coming into play.
I'd like to ask other MK ii owners if having just a headphone jack is enough to power your earbuds/iems/headphones.
Going to do a bit more in detail research within a couple of days but I think Sony just wanted to slap a headphone jack just to say it has one.
Ps- I'm no audiophile but having a full sound for the headphones I have is a must.
Thank you! This thread is very interesting.
I have reduced hearing and I badly need a smartphone with high-output. My LG V30 with it's QUAD-DAC has no problem giving me enough volume even on my favourite pair Hifiman HE-4xx.
I was hoping that Sony 1 mk2 was an alternative, but maybe not................ ?

You may want to make the distinction between headphone jacks that can and cannot drive high impedance headphones as a headphone jack that can't can still be good as in clear, little to no distortion with good response and sound reproduction.
In this case its more like LG's has gone out of their way to include a dac that can power high impedance headphones (which is rare in the first place, in addition to the jack being rare) so if high impedance headphones usage is a top priority, then sticking to LG would be recommended.
I have a Meizu Pro usb dac which has a good reputation. The volume of the Meizu is a bit higher, but the audio quality of the Sony is equal. You just have to increase the volume 2 or 3 notches. The Sony uses the Qualcom dac and excellent Cirrus amplifier chips. I use my Beoplay H6 over the ear headphones for listening. The volume being a bit lower is no problem for me, I still can get serious hearing damage if I want to.
The audio is detailed, excellent channel separation, noise is undetectable.

Yeah LG has done the headphone jack justice, but I was expecting a bit more out of the mark 2 for it's price point.
Like hi-res audio. I get it's mainly a photography oriented product. I mean I guess I got used to only using half of the volume steps provided by the LG phones.
I just had high expectations out of Sony in the audio department. Great camera. As for the dac mentioned above, i have a couple so I'm not too worried about getting any more of them. I have a couple of headphone I can try out besides my audio technicas.
The audio capability of the phone is lacking
Bluetooth volume is pretty poor even though it's decent quality
The 3.5mm Jack absolutely doesn't have that much power to drive much more than basic iem 8 to 16 ohm level. Can't push my 150ohm cans at all
Definitely louder than the previous phones. I'm just happy that the jack is back. I did notice a difference with bluetooth vs wired on WH1000XM4. Volume was definitely louder on bluetooth, but can really notice the difference in quality despite LDAC. But that's just me.

But it does have Hi-Res audio. Volume is a bit lower, but is also the curve of the volume control. With the LG the volume control is linear, with the Sony starts to increase real slow, until over half of the volume.

Yeah volume has to be over half way to start making decent sound. Regular buds are fine though. I have some kz iems and it's fine with those. Just higher impedance isn't for this phone.
My Beoplay H6 headphones have an impedance of 30 Ohms. They work great with the Sony. I can't compare, these are the only wired headphones I have.

Try to dm peter. I didn't have a chance to save this.
Sony Xperia 1 II most probably uses a Qualcomm audio codec. Can be their flagship Aqstic WCD9341, a dedicated audio chip. Only a proper tear-down will reveal the details. As I found out this audio chip contains a very good DAC section and can produce nearly 1 Vrms at headphone out when implemented in high performance mode.
