Slow Verizon LTE speeds? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I've been having consistently awful LTE speeds ever since I got my Pixel 2 XL. Anyone else?

Mine is pretty good.

Im not on VZW, but when using any speedtesting app, you should try more than 1 destination. The one the app selects is not always the best, and will give skewed results.

Yup, I have been. Still getting abysmal numbers. Same using the fast.com site by Netflix. Panama City Beach is a pretty big city, Verizon signal here should be great. Not sure what's wrong...

You should install SignalCheck Lite/Pro. This will tell you exactly what band you're on. Most common are 13, 4, and 2. Not that it's easy to change your band, but cycling airplane mode might help.
If you're on Band 13 (700 MHz) with that kind of signal, and live in a populated area, I'm not surprised.
Band 4 and 2 offer higher capacities/faster speeds. These are also known as LTE Advanced/XLTE (old term) (1700 and 1900 mhz I believe).
Cycling airplane mode may put you on 2 or 4. Signal will probably be weaker, but will be faster. The higher the frequency, the harder it is for signal to penetrate through objects, walls, and other stuff. But higher frequency offers more bandwidth capabilities.

I've tried cycling airplane mode as suggested, but it always locks into 700. Never any other bands.

I guess I'm going to have to take it to Verizon today and see if they know what's wrong.

Maybe thats all your area has... 700 mhz. If thats the case, could always look into a different provider if it’s a possibility

I've had Verizon in the past and the signal was really good. It's just an issue on this particular phone. My friends with Verizon have no issues.

I don't think it's the phone, I'm on Verizon and lots of days I get the same speeds you're showing and then the next day I'm getting really good speeds. It's the same way on my Nexus 5X I strongly believe it's just their Network and some days it's just crap and there's no way around it.

I have the same issue. Was averaging 9-10 Mbps and now less than 0.2 always. I think it's the phone. Went to a bigger City where I have had speeds over 40 Mbps( not with the Pixel 2 XL) and no change. Upload speeds are really high always. Even at home I can upload at 20-25 but only download at 0.2. I'm on the new unlimited and only used 5 gb so far.
Was using Droid turbo 2 before switching to the Pixel 2 XL. Was actually faster when I had Oreo 8.0.

Verizon has been limiting speeds for everyone lately due to high network traffic they slow it after 50GB if you have unlimited and that's bs in my opinion I mean hell I pay for the beyond plan

[Q]Wcdma?

Hey everyone, I recently got a new Android phone, Samsung galaxy s2x, it should have dual 4g capabilities. The speed isn't great compared to what others have been getting. I usually get around 3-4mbps, the Telus website says 7-14 should be attained...
My question is basically, in the wireless options, I can choose gsm, wcdma or both. Is wdcma considered hspa+ ?
I live in Montreal, where the Telus network should be fully developed. Highest speed I've got was 6mbps.
Anything wrong, or were my expectations too high when buying this phone?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Also, my girlfriend has an iPhone4 with Telus also, its often quicker than mine on the net...and its a 3g phone.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
see this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306045
there are some from Montreal they are getting great speed
the thing is with cell phones, it depends highly in your location and tower
also in Canada do not believe anything that says 4G it's all fake
our infrastructure is poor compared to the USA, at best we can only get good 3G speed even when you see 4G
even the Rogers LTE are no where near as good they also top out around 15 Mbps at its best, while the USA or other counterparts they get like 30 Mbps on LTE
So i'm stuck with slow speeds lol?
I kinda regret going with Telus, they have terrible reception as well as slow speeds...

I just tested mine and I got 19 down and 4 up on Telus. Most days I get an average of 10. I live outside of Vancouver. Downtown I am lucky to get 3.
Telus has always given me faster speeds than Rogers. I am very happy with Telus's network.

I think you are just not tech savy enough to use a cell like the S2X. Try doing a speed test in your browser and you will see that the speed test.net app is crap. I get 21 mbps downlink on telus in mtl using speedtest.net in dolphin HD (using app I get 3-10mbps). Stop blaming the carriers. People like you are just never happy but its your own fault! Maybe also if you would test your phone outside your basement it would help! Mtl reception is flawless, actually reception in QC in general is great.
I have tried all the different modems from the kj3, vk1 and even the Blaze LB7 and different roms and I still get miserable speed on my phone. I have many friends with different phones even 3G phones that are doing alot better. I am getting speeds of less than 300 k downlaod with with full bars.

I think some people had similar problems as you. I don't remember exactly but some workarounds are using the supercharger script and running those 3g scripts or whatever it's called.
Someone if i recall correctly couldn't get fast data at all, he opted for a warranty exchange and that fixed it for him.
If anything you could try making your own thread in the Q&A area and maybe those people who had similar problems can answer it for you. Obviously it's not because of your location because your friends' phones get fast speed in the same location

3G Speeds Lacking

Hey guys, just got my phone yesterday. This thing is blazing fast compared to my OC'd DINC in terms of processing power. However, my 3G speeds suck! My DINC would consistently be 1.5 mbps down and 500kbps up at my house. With the Nexus my very best has been 600kbps up. I have my friend's Droid Pro right next to my Nexus getting a full mbps faster than me.
This is a big deal for me as I only get 3G half the time I use my phone.
I am on the stock OS and kernel with unlocked bootloader and root. I also have CDMA only enabled.

NOTE THESE SPEEDS ARE IN KBPS
Edited to explain these speeds are not good
So you get 100kbit better speeds upstream and that's bad? Sounds like you are just limited by whatever signal you get in your area as the 1.5 down is still not max for a dinc.
Edit: Sorry I couldn't see your screenshot in tapatalk had to paste the image shack URL into a browser, i was going from what you said. Those are some crap speeds. Try getting a new SIM from your carrier.
Sent from my GSM Galaxy Nexus on TMoUS using Tapatalk
It can be really hard to know if it's better or worse. There are so many variables that come into play like the congestion on the tower/network and congestion on the server your conducting the speed test on.
You don't need a new SIM if your EVDO speeds suck, you just.. are kind of SoL. I'm surprised you see 1.5 mpbs on your Incredible though, my EVDO speeds in Chicago were awful.
This is about the Max speed I can get where I live, Orange UK
Would you say that's a decent speed ??

OP is talking about CDMA on Verizon. Which is never going to do any better than 1.5mbps or so.
Those speeds you're getting aren't great. But I'd just ask other users on the network where you live.

Sorry about that, I reposted the picture. Again, this is from a CDMA Nexus. My friend who has his nexus is consistently over 1mbps. However, his dad who has a Nexus is in the same boat as me.
Really baffled by this one.
I thonk 3.2 mbps is the best you can do on verizon iirc.
Crazy world, ay?
I have the same problem, I made a thread about this on droid forums here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ga...ns/189683-signal-sucks-verizon-you-wrong.html
Compared to my old Droid X and a family members Droid RAZR my Galaxy Nexus doesn't even get HALF the speed and VERY crappy signal with constant dropped calls and trouble with data. Switching from Wi-fi to 3g takes from a couple of minutes to having to reboot the phone completely just for 3g to activate! This problem NEEDS to be fixed, verizon's solution to just increase the bars visually is a slap in the face to us experiencing this problem!

LTE speeds for Rogers users or others in Ontario

Just curious what some of you Rogers users ( and some other lte users on other carriers in Canada) are getting for your LTE throughputs on your S3's?
Rogers used to pretty poor at first launch but I must say that now they have vastly improved and I'm now averaging 30-45mbps in the GTA with peaks in the mid 50's!
Very happy about it..now I just wish they would expand their coverage for lte just a bit cuz it ends two blocks from my new house!
Post your speed test results if u like.

I'm with bell on a GSIII and my girlfriend is with Rogers on HTC One X. I get a maximum of about 25mbps and she got around 30mbps last night. Indoors we typically only get HSPA+, LTE is mostly outside or in the car. We live along the Lake Shore, east of Park Lawn.
I usually get 40+mbs at the minimum. Very happy with a 6 gb plan
Powered by Samsung Galaxy S3 via Tapatalk2
Yeah, I'm hoping they expand the network quickly, I don't get any coverage where I am (approx. 2h north of the GTA). Though it does help my battery life
I'm pulling about 7mb/s with HSPA+
Im on Bell and generally hit 25-30 down around the gta... have hit high 40s a few times...
I'm in Vancouver and the speed is quite amazing as I got 45ish Mbps at home. 25-30 Mbps at office or at the restaurants.
It outruns my home network by almost 3 times.......

Yeah exactly what I'm thinking. I've tried rolling back to stock ROM (from CM 10) to see if that would improve the speed, but no affect.
Not that it affects anything I do on a daily basis, but it's still annoying

Good point! We are comparing speed results that make no difference to how one's device functions (unless one is heavy downloading on the network). I try to download very large files through WiFi only to conserve my previous data.
But yeah, good speed test numbers are cool.

wow, you can get 40ish Mbps on HSPA+ on telus???? I didn't know they are that good??? isn't the theoretical max speed on HSPA 42Mbps???
In Calgary I get on average 16 down, and 4 up. It was only recently lauched here so assuming it will get better (not complaing, this is SO fast). It's better than our old Optik with Telus on a wired computer, lol.
Was using Stock when I did last speedtest.
Using ROGERS Wireless
I'm in Richmond Hill area.. My LTE connection is not exactly stable, sometimes it would just jump back to 3G...
On LTE get around 25-40 mbps down, and 5-10 mbps up
Once it goes back to HSPA, I get around 5-8 mbps (this is pretty slow)...
I too got the $30 6GB plan promo a few weeks ago.. ^_^

Shocker there. Buying a 5G phone right now is a waste unless you're doing it for the cool factor. The rang me for uwb 5g is so short. Consistent signal is just not there. Hopefully that improved. That sub 6 stuff seems the way to go, too bad speeds aren't quite there.

Consistent speed definitely not there even though the signal is very strong. The problem is that anything almost can block the signal and they are going to have to have antennas all over the place (and very close together) to cover all locations. Buying a phone with 5G is not a waste now, frequencies to be used will not change (why would they change after the phones are already sold and they're starting to roll out the antennas and they're already set up in various cities, that's a ridiculous assumption), people on this forum already told me it'll take years do even get the test, and here I am already testing it. The newer version of the antenna and receiver is not some experimental thing that will have to be changed; and in Chicago people already got wireless speeds over 1GB.
Sent from my SM-N976V using Tapatalk
Frequencies will not change but better directional technology will develop that current phones will NOT be able to take advantage of. And frequencies will be added as they expand range. Again, current phones will not be able to take advantage of any of that.
At the moment, 5G NR supports 2x2 MIMO and 64 QAM, or two layers and six bits per symbol. But the technology supports 4x4 MIMO on handsets and even massive MIMO at the base station level, as well as more efficient types of coding. We just have to wait for devices and capabilities to evolve.
So I repeat, pointless to purchase 5g phones that will become antiquated within a couple years. Especially since you can barely use them now.

LOL I change phones faster than shoes here, no worries!
HOWEVER, where I live I don't think 5G will be relevant for a while like a DECADE or more. 700Mbps both ways on wifi is good enough.
Finally, after seeing over 200Mbps on LTE in places, it doesn't really make that much difference to most folks. I'll be interested when I can see 500/500+ on 5G WITHOUT the need for looking for a charger by lunchtime. Guess that's going to be a while.

That's fine but I guarantee you those speeds aren't going to be there every time you run that. Walk a block over and, yep, gone!
The upload is quite slow. And see there lies the chief issue. If I'm out and about taking pics and using dropbox to u/l in the background the 30-40mbps upload I get *not* in non 4G area prevails. And like a muscle car, one sees the fuel needle dipping with every burnout. (5G KILLS battery life!)
TBH I'm kind of fed up with all this push for 5G when there are a lot of areas that barely get enough signal to make a call! I'd rather have solid LTE coverage with BIG backhauls serving cells. Then they can worry about 5G. JMHO of course.

Question 5G data speeds are terrible, why?

Testing results in garbage speed (consistently less than 7 Mbps down, less than 1 Mbps up, 20-25 ms ping, 6-8 ms jitter). Signal strength is apparently 38% (-111 dBm). I noticed it was bad sometimes when I was actually out and not at home on my WiFi, but I had to use my hotspot for a few hours since they were doing maintenance on the internet here at home, and it was just terrible. So now I have to ask.... what could be making it so slow? Is it just me, or are others suffering from terrible speed as well? Is it my modem? The area I'm in (Sacramento, CA)? Or is it actually on T-Mobile's end?
Just ran a few Speedtest app 5g tests in Southern Nevada...

I'm on EU firmware with T-Mobile network in Texas, and speeds are kinda all over but consistently fast. Odd that it used LTE for most of my tests instead of 5G though.
I'm not sure if it's always just been "bleh" speeds for 5G here or not, but seeing as how this is the first 5G device I've owned, it's hard to say if it's on my end or theirs.
Nope, must be something on my end. Their map says my area has "5G Ultra Capacity" so that can't be the issue.

Might just be your testing locations. 5g actually performs poorly in home environment for me, about the same as lte for speed but less reliable. I'd check open network maps to determine if you're actually close to a 5g cell tower (not relying on carrier provided maps that tend to skew positively for them), and if so, check if you get better signal outside. If you are close to a tower, get decent speeds outside, but not inside, then getting a signal booster for faster mobile speeds indoor would be needed.
It is definitely testing location. When I test at home, the speed is slower than 4g by a lot. When I test at work in NYC I have mind blowing speeds. Faster than my IPS at home.

Are they consistently like that? The results I mentioned above were at home. But I tested again yesterday while I was out, at a grocery store just down the street a few blocks, and I got 19.9 up/ 3.98 down (which is better, but still pretty sad).

I wouldn't be able to tell you honestly because I do not live in NYC. I commute there for work. I have one ran speed test there 2 times and both times I had blazing fast speed like that. Over at my house, the 5g is poor and I only use 4g.
@GuyInDogSuit I've been having the same issues lately. Not sure what's been going on. T-Mobile OP9P converted to DA firmware, using Family Mobile SIM connected using T-Mobile APN.
Was surprised to get these results today. Went to download an app update using mobile data, realized it downloaded in two seconds, so I figured I'd speed test it. I live in ****ty Ohio lol.

Holy mackerel!!
Anyway, to update on this.... It would seem it is definitely something in the area, and not just the 5G. I tested the LTE on my tablet and got piss-poor results on that as well. 9.89 down, 0.07 up. Yikes.
They're fine here
I was all over the place today, in at least two different counties, and tested several times. The speeds weren't spectacular, but they were still much better than the sadness I get at home. I should look into some ways to improve that, especially since it will be my only source of internet for a few days next week.
