Google Phone Update bug - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

So...I updated the phone app on my Pixel XL2 128 unlocked. (ver. 15.0.178328112, Dec 8)
I wondered why I had missed calls today..it turns out for me at least- once I updated yesterday that when calls came in, the Always on display turned off when it rang. (And stayed off!) You never see the screen turn on when a call comes in.
I uninstalled and it works again. Maybe this helps someone..I'd be curious if anyone else see's the same problem.

I've had some weird issues like this as well, but from the start. I found that using WiFi calling with Fi is kinda buggy. After I disabled WiFi calling under the IMS settings, all my incoming call issues went away.

I need to update my signature...I moved to T-Mobile. (not on Fi anymore...that damn data is expensive!)
Is your phone app updated? Does it do the same thing I was seeing?

Ah, my issues may be specific to Fi, but yes I am on the latest Phone App version released yesterday and all good here. As long as I keep WiFi calling disabled under IMS settings, everything works perfect.

You can change it in one of two places:
1. Goto Settings->Network & Internet->Mobile network->Advanced->Configure IMS calling->Turn off WiFi calling.
2. Open Phone App->Goto Settings->Calls->Configure IMS calling->Turn off WiFi calling.

thx for the reply, i am on Fi network and in network settings i don;t have that option but in the phone app i do but it's just called configure wi-fi calling not "ims"
And since the phone app is a system app you can't just uninstall but if you go to playstore youbcan uninstall the update, just didn't know if you all updated it again or not.

Not sure if my issue is related to yours, but ever since I got my Pixel 2 XL, if my phone is plugged in, my display turns off when a call comes in. I never had this problem with any other phone. Thankfully my Huawei watch shows who's calling or I'd be answering spam calls all day!

Here is a Tasker with Secure Task workaround.

Wifi Turn Back On Automatically Not Working?

Has anyone else noticed that their device does not automatically turn on wifi on their home network anymore. With WiFi off, it used to automatically turn on shortly after entering my home. All settings are checked under wifi settings.
Yeah I have noticed this in the past day or 2. I have had this working in the past but no longer seems to auto-reconnect.

Are you on the stock kernel?
Yes, stock kernel - Oreo 8.0
Mine stopped working after upgrade to 8.1. Any idea how to make it working again?

I think we're the only people in the world w/ this problem. Can't find squat after searching everywhere except this thread.
Somewhere along the way it started working again for me. Not sure how or why but you might try using the smart lock and reset your home location or add a few other locations around your home that would unlock it.

After a few months, mine started automatically connecting to WiFi again today.
I updated Waze beta and Android Auto, so that may have been the problem for me, because I think it started after installing one or both of those in previous versions. I highly suspect one of those two since I have them set to only use data when either is started.

T Mobile wifi calling not working on Pixel 2 XL? Is it a setting?

Hi, I just switched from Project Fi to T Mobile and wifi calling is not working on my Pixel 2 XL. If I'm in airplane mode, turn on wifi, and make a call, it gives me an error that says "turn off airplane mode or connect to a wireless network to make a call."
My searches on the net seem to show varying results with it seeming to work for some and not others. Please help! Please respond if you have a Pixel 2 XL on T Mobile and if wifi calling is working for you in airplane mode. I assume that a true wifi call on the Pixel will show a wifi symbol on the call screen, as it did for me when I was on Project Fi.
Thanks!
Just tried. Haven't used the wifi calling as I have a T-Mobile LTE hot spot and haven't needed to at home since. Worked fine though on stock 8.1 no root. Airplane mode active, WiFi on.
Never turned it on until I tested it out, I'm on 8.1 stock unrooted March patch and it works just fine.

You guys are giving me hope. Thanks so much for responding. I need to find out what is different about my setup than your two.
Did you get your Pixel 2 XL from Verizon? Mine's straight from Google/Project Fi. I don't THINK there's a difference, is there?

I don't feel like there's anything significant in here. Any ideas, guys?
When you were on a Wi-Fi call that you placed, did you have the little Wi-Fi symbol on the call Page above the name and number? That's what I remember when I would make a Wi-Fi call using project fi on my pixel 2 XL.

The key for me back when i had tmobile was to register a 911 address on My T-Mobile. (Note: If you skip this step, a REG09 error may be displayed.)

Great suggestion, thank you. As I just started my T Mobile service yesterday, I had not entered an e911 address yet, which the store rep had asked me to do. However, I just added it and still have no wifi calling ability. That said, I'm not sure if this takes time to work, in other words now that I've put in the address if it takes 24 hours or something?
The other thing is that based on the error message I get, which I posted on page one of this thread, "turn off airplane mode....", it does not suggest a problem with the e911 address. It feels like a settings issue to me. An advanced settings issue. All I've got is a gut feeling and nothing to back it up. I've asked T Mobile for help on this and they are only somewhat interested because my phone is not a T Mobile device.
And that link you've included is GREAT because it officially suggests the Pixel 2 has wifi calling capability on T Mobile. Not the Pixel 2 XL but...it still might be good ammo for me when asking for help when they're not so interested.

Thank you for posting this picture! This is exactly what I'm looking for and what I recognize from successful Wi-Fi calling on Project Fi recently. I can tell that you feel my pain here and I appreciate it.
Another indication I'm noticing is that when I'm in airplane mode and Wi-Fi is on, I get a "no connection" indication bar in Android messages. See the attached thumbnail. That should not be happening and further indicates something is amiss. I think when that goes away I will have with Wi-Fi calling capability.
I had to enable the wifi calling within the phone app and it worked.

I've definitely done that, and gone through all of the menus.
To add insult to injury, my wife's MotoX4, on the same account and also brand new to T Mobile, has perfectly functioning wifi calling.
Thanks again for all of the responses. I may try going back to the store and having them re-provision my phone, in case something didn't get done right initially.

Whatever you don't, don't let any T-Mobile idiot try to lie to you saying you need a T-Mobile branded phone for wifi calling. When I was having issues getting this setup, one of the Tier 2 IT techs tried selling that line of bull****.

I know, I've received that one already. But there's way too much evidence on here and other forms to suggest that it absolutely works with the pixel 2 and can be done. I just need to find someone at T-Mobile who's willing to work on it with me.
If anyone has a contact at T-Mobile who they like, PLEASE let me know.
Would anyone who hasn't already specified please let me know if your phone is a Verizon specific device as opposed to the Google Store Pixel 2 XL? No one has said that their Google version has wifi calling working yet and that is the only thing I can think of.
Thank you!

hi can someone help me get my screen call working.

I have a pixel 3 xl with the latest December firmware, I'm on T-Mobile and I live in Florida. As I said everything is updated I have the call screen option in the phone app, I even have dark mode. Now when you go to change the voice selection in call screen, the voice part is greyed out and says "ACTIVATING CALL SCREEN REQUIRES WIFI " I connect to both wifi and hotspot and still not activating.I contacted Google like 15 times send bug report, still no help.

Are you a beta tester of the phone app? I was a beta tester and I had an issue slightly different than yours. I was able to activate it but it didn't work. I opted out of the beta testing and then uninstalled and reinstalled the app and it worked. Maybe try to become a beta tester if you're not one already. Just throwing some suggestions out.

RCS went away?

A few days ago RCS randomly stopped working. I also got an update to Messages later in the evening but it was hours after it stopped working. I have rebooted, uninstalled updates and reinstalled, etc. No dice.
When I first launch Messages after updating to the latest version it has the popup to enable messages clicking enable goes straight to "ready to go" (or similar) and I can tap the link to Chat settings and see the options but after exiting the app and coming back Chat is gone completely and I only have SMS.
This was present before and after Q beta 3. Verizon, Pixel 3 XL.
Anyone else experiencing similar? Any ideas on how to fix?
May need to check with Verizon, since it's activated from a carrier level.
They may have disabled it with they're most recent backend update, not from Google.
Not sure what happened, or is happening, but even T-Mobile states the Pixel no longer supports it.

They never have, because the Pixel was not officially sold by them and had not gone through whatever hoops they have for devices to get that feature.
Prior to I/O, I was trying to figure this out but there's such a lack of knowledge that actually calling tech support got me info.
The Verge just released an article about this issue with RCS on Pixels on T-Mobile, due to the release and availability of 3A on T-Mobile.

I contacted VZW on Twitter and provided screenshots showing what happens. If I uninstall updates and install the latest version, the first time the app opens it says it's ready to go and I can tap to see Chat settings toggle them around, etc but it doesn't actually work and the Chat settings disappear from the advanced menu after closing the app.
They told me everything appears correct and I should contact Google. I explained this started without any changes to the Messages app but they just told me to talk to Google again so I gave up on that.
This weekend I rolled back to two releases ago (4.2.069 fairie) and got the same prompts about it being ready. Went to the convo with my fiancee and it was still SMS. BUT, I had Chat settings in Advanced, so it was at least different than before. I rebooted the phone and RCS worked. But if I updated to either of the newer versions, it breaks and I have to uninstall and go back to 4.2.069, reboot again and it works. So I guess I'll wait and see if they release another update and try that, but for now I'll stay on this version.
The more annoying part is that Q beta 3 doesn't allow you to change any notification settings for Messages, so I can't turn the damn vibration off every time I get a text.
Yea it's broken for me too. I got a random pop up that RCS wants to be enabled which it already was so I hit accept. I still can't get it to turn on. reboot, turn off, turn back on reboot and still can't get it to work. Pixel 3 xl on verizon here.

That's exactly what happened to me. It randomly said enable chat features after they were on for months, and quit working after that. If you want it back you can uninstall updates and go back to 4.2.069 and it will work again. Thinking it must be something in the way Messages is talking to Verizon.

Outbound audio not working over phone calls

Did you double check your apn settings for TMobile? Side question, is 5g working for you out of the box on TMobile?
Thanks
5g working, and actually the whole phone thing just started working too. I disabled the native dialer, made Google dialer default, and restarted. I'll leave it here in case someone has the same issue.
But also - how do I change apn settings I can't find it on this phone?

I had this happen yesterday. I also had the patched google dialer installed. I think thats what the issue is.
BTW, your not getting 5g, its just the icon.
To change the APN settings, you go to Dual Cards and Mobile Networks -> More (Under the active sim card) -> Access Point Names.
That said, I changed dialers, changed my APN settings, and restarted. No luck..

I just paired my wireless earbuds to them and I am able to actually hold a conversation with someone with no problem.
I don't think it's a mic issue either, as I was able to test it successfully through Parrot and Discord with and without the earbuds. I suppose this is what I'll be rolling with for the time being until this can get figured out. :/
EDIT: Made a new observation! After pairing the bluetooth earbuds to the phone and then disconnecting them, I was able to use the phone normally. However, turning the phone off will essentially cause the same issue as before. One step forward, I suppose.
I dunno guys it's working on mine, make sure you give the phone app all permissions, make it default, and disable the nubia dialer..

GUYS THE FIX IS COMMON TO DUAL SIM ANDROID 10 DEVICES - insert the SIM card into slot #2 (the bottom one). Reboot. Magic, it's fixed.
Thank me now that your phone works properly please. I'm the ONLY developer on the phone at the moment and that really sucks. If I could get ANY help from anyone in this community I could move mountains...
If you guys having issue with the mic during call, hit the hands free button 2 times that should fix your mic.

Thank you. Made a quick call to MetroPCS and swapped my SIM. It's working successfully now.
Fixed, partially some how
I had the same problem, when i call, i can hear the other person very well but they can't hear me. Sometimes also the call drops automatically. I tried the fix of switching the sim to slot 2, it did not work but it solved another issue where some of my other devices could not connect to 5ghz hotspot although they support 5ghz band. Now back to the mic not working during calls, the problem does not occur if i recieve calls, and it happens with some outgoing calls, not all. My 5g is enabled and working fine. It only happens with iphones. It did not happen with any other phone. I tried with some friends iphones to disable the VOLTE and problem solved. So every time i call someone and the mic dont work, i ask if they r using iphones and the answer is always yes. I tell them to disable the VOLTE everytime. I hope there is a common fix from the Red Magic side as its not practical to keep asking iphone users to disable VOLTE. I hope this helps.
