Did you.....
Fastboot the stock boot.img
Then fastboot the new twrp.img
Then flash the new twrp.zip
Then custom kernel (optional)
Then flash magisk.zip?????

doh! lemme try that
EDIT: Fixed! so you have to do these steps each time you want to update twrp?

I skipped the first 2 steps when upgrading and just rebooted into current twrp flashed new twrp, kernel and magisk. Profit

I don't necessarily know if you need to this procedure every time. However, given the fact that recovery now resides in the boot.img, I just think it's a little more prudent to start with stock kernel/recovery before trying to modify it. :good:

Tried to root Pixel XL 2 and it keeps rebooting in twrp
I am a novice at this, but first ran "twrp-3.2.1-2-taimen.img. from cmd prompt.
Then using TWRP installed " twrp-pixel2-installer-taimen-3.2.2-0.zip" everything was fine.
Then installed "Magisk-v16.1(1610).zip" and now keeps rebooting to TWRP.
I can get to fastboot and rerun twrp-3.2.1-2-taimen.img, but then cannot find the zip files to install or flash.
any help greatly appreciated!

If your post is correct, it appears your using two different twrp's?? Anyways, lets try this. Make sure your screen lock is set to swipe or none. Then fastboot twrp 3.2.2-0.img. Once in twrp, flash the twrp 3.2.2-0 installer zip, then flash your magisk zip and see what happens. Flashing a custom kernel is also recommended after you flash the twrp.zip, and before you flash your magisk zip :good:

I just wanted to create an account to say THANK YOU! I had the same exact issue, and your solution worked. I did not realize I needed to reflash magisk zip.
So again, thank you @Badger50

Stuck rooting

Hi all, so I have Verizon's Pixel XL. I have unlocked it successfully and had rooted. I asked on the forums about upgrading the OTA update and was told it was fine. After doing so, I noticed my SuperSU was gone (although I might have lost it earlier and not noticed). So after trying to get it back and keeping getting stuck, I bit the bullet and ADB sideloaded the factory image from google (NDE63X) and got it able to boot up. Yay.
So then I ran the 'adb reboot bootloader' command, then verified my device was connected with 'fastboot devices' and finally I ran 'fastboot boot boot-to-root.img'. And here I am, stuck on the splash screen again.
So I looked around and saw some mentions of people that had used older versions of Chainfire's SuperSU. I tried the newer one (2.78 SR3) and the same thing happened. I do see that there is a SR5, but I also see Chainfire's comment "Do not use the SuperSU ZIP on work-in-progress TWRP releases for Pixel, it will not work - use the model specific links above instead.
I can get it to run just fine without using chainfire's supersu...but then I don't have the supersu app or any real gains from having rooted.
So, I feel like I must be doing something wrong. Any suggestions?
@smokeydriver,
You probably should update your Android SDK package. This problem can also be caused by an obsolete fastboot.

I understand. Here's the thing: I don't know if minimal has up to date ADB and fastboot for Android 7.1.1.

The OTA update I took only got me to a new version of 7.1, not 7.1.1 (from NDE63P to NDE63X). It still shows an available update to 7.1.1 which I have *not* done.
Try using the Unified Toolkit. It saved me from having a bootloop disaster when I tried upgrading from 7.1.1 due to poor instruction availability around the web. It should fix whatever problem you are having, even if that means flashing the factory image first again.

I've tried, but keep getting an error 21 code that it can't install...I tried this with SR5 and SR2.
How I Rooted
Personally, I'd flash to latest OTA via Unified Android Toolkit before starting this process.
Then use Minimal ADB to flashboot boot twrp.img (The Alpha2 Version)
AT this point you should already have 2 zips on your phone, TWRP-RC1 and SuperSU v5.
Flash TWRP, then SuperSU.
Reboot into OS, confirm root, give it 5 minutes.
Reboot back to Recovery and flash Kernel if desired.
Do not flash root with RC-1 (thats why we flashed root while using Alpha2 adb twrp.img), do not restore backups made with Alpha2 using RC1 or vic versa. AKA Backup and Restore with same version of TWRP.

Ok, I must be doing something wrong on a very basic level. It gave me error 21 (signature verification error) when trying to use the unified android tookit to install 7.1. Anyways, I'll just move on and skip that step and see what happens.
Flashing SuperSU SR5 works just fine with TWRP RC1. All you have to do is delete the file you're told to before flashing.

I transferred those 2 files to my download folder on my phone, ran the twrp.img script, and then when I go in...the file names are not normal. Everything is random letters and numbers. Again, I feel like I'm making some stupid basic mistake that I don't understand (and I've rooted plenty of phones).

Ah, I see. I misunderstood. I thought you were just under the impression that you couldn't flash SU with RC1. My apologies.
Ok, so can someone tell me why I am getting stuck with 1 thing. I go to my stock recovery and into ADB sideload. When I tell it the file, it keeps failing to verify whole-file signature. What is wrong with this one step?
Or alternatively...when I'm in TWRP Alpha 2- why are all the files within the sdcard random letters and numbers?

Can I ask you how you fixed this? I'm having the same issue and this post popped up on Google.

trying to flash twrp; it just hangs!

Hi all,
*I've unlocked bootloader
* Have tried fastboot boot TWRP.img, as well as tried flashing TWRP RC1 via the Skipsoft toolkit.
Every way I've tried the phone just sits at the TWRP boot screen and doesn't allow me to go any further..
Any help here would be truly appreciated!
Cheers,
I've been having the same issue tonight. Re-flash the stock image, go through the whole setup process and make sure you add a lockscreen pin, then flash TWRP. That is what worked for me. I still can't flash a Rom though for some reason. It's driving me insane.

You're braver than me. I haven't had my Pixel XL long but this is the first phone I've ever owned where I am afraid to try and install a custom recovery and ROM. With the dual partitions and what I hear about TWRP still being buggy it just seems like Google didn't want people to run anything but pure Android on the Pixels.

Same issue here, but no solution. Adding a lockscreen pin didn't change anything for me. I just get a teamwin image but it just sits there & doesn't actually open TWRP. My bootlocker is unlocked but thats as far as I can get 7.1.2 with May security. I have tried reloading everything and followed commonly recommended steps.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I would love to get this thing rooted and get some ROM flexibility - even to just get rid of the Nav Bar ....

I have never had a problem. Make sure your using the rc1 fast boot TWRP. Should be fastboot boot twrp.img. I change file name to this or copy and paste. Then you install rc1 or rc2 zip.
I know you will have problems if you try to install the wrong file.

That strange. I just flash a factory image from Google
Set up a security pattern
Enable adb debugging
Fastboot boot twrp 3.0.2-0 rc1 IMG
Make sure it asks for your security pattern if it doesn't reboot to bootloader and fastboot twrp again, and keep repeating until it does
Install twrp 3.1.0.0 rc2 or rc1 zip
If your using may bootloader's fish VBS 6 zip
And it should stick, if you flash. Anything else that messes with boot flash that VBS zip at the end again

You keep stating that you just flash the image. Are you flashing it from the bootloader then trying to boot to recovery?
You have to boot TWRP from your PC first. Then from TWRP you can then "flash" TWRP.
Just wanted to make sure that was a step you were taking!
Just wait. It will take little longer

Yes, I have tried fastboot to flash the TWRP img, as well as skipsofts toolkit. I guess I've been using the term "flash" for fastboot, as I haven't been able to use twrp yet.. I understand that you need to flash the TWRP img via pc and then flash the TWRP zip, then SuperSU or magisk, whatever your poison may be !

Messed up with TWRP

Hi all, got TWRP installed OK on my Pixel 2 XL, hit reboot and then it goes straight back into TWRP, but with no Touch. So, thought I could flash a new kernel (Flash?) but... no ADB! I guess the phone hasn't probably booted so ADB can't see the phone.
Any options at this point?!

If your phone boots back to bootloader on reboot, you did something wrong. Reflash system imgs and start over.
Thanks! Is that a matter of following the guides on the official google download page and getting the factory images?

Yes. If you don't want your data wiped, open the install.bat file and take off the -w.
Did you unlock your bootloader correctly? Unlock critical? I believe the pixel 2 xl is the only phone where that has to be done.
Boot into bootloader and fastboot flash recovery.img again, once your in recovery, flash the recovery.zip from your storage again, then reboot recovery.... its happened to me, usually when I switch slots, all I have to do is reflash recovery.
Also note, If I am trying to boot at that point (rather than flash a ROM), I usually just flash the kernel and magisk and I'm good to go.
Thanks all! I flashed the patched boot.img again and it seems to be working OK
OK, this whole thing is confusing me now! I get TWRP installed then I have to re-flash my boot.img before I quit TWRP (a magisk patched version of Flash) or the phone keeps booting to TWRP. Thats fine, but when I've flashed the boot.img I loose TWRP!

Yes you do loose twrp after flashing the boot.img. the reason being that stock recovery resides in the boot.img. So when you flash it, bye..bye twrp! Why not just fastboot twrp, then once in twrp, flash the twrp installer zip, then flash your custom kernel(if used) then flash the magisk zip for root. :good:
Ok! So this is where I'm confused. The Flash Kernel is called boot.img? So I'm flashing it in twrp with the boot option?

No. Flash kernel is just the kernel, the boot.img is from the factory image. Flash the zip version of Flash kernel in twrp, then flash magisk.zip :good:
Ok. So here a shot of my confusion! The file I got from Flash is this one, flashkernel-taimen.v.2.30-boot.img. The three choices I'm being given by TWRP is boot, system or vendor?

I keep hoping Xposed will go die in a fire. It causes more problems than it solves, to the point ROM developers will tell you not to bother reporting issues with it installed. Rovo knows his stuff, but his creation has caused more damage to custom ROM development than Cyanogenmod did in its last three years.

What is the CORRECT way to gain ROOT in PDP3?

I have attempted :
-Fastboot boot TWRP.img
-Reboot Recovery
-TWRP Flash Magisk v16.4
-Reboot into System
Am i missing a Kernel? If so, where is the Kernel for PDP3?
Am i missing a Patched_Boot.img? If so, where is the PDP3 Patched_Boot.img?
What is the correction instruction for gaining ROOT on PDP3?
What else may i be missing from the recipe?
I have searched and asked others via PM or in the Thread, and have received half-ass replies.... So would someone please lay it out, if not, i guess i will go back to 8.1.0....where i had ROOT, Recovery, and Viper4Android... Thank God I made a back-up....

I'm generally curious how many times, and in how many threads, you're going to ask this question.
1) Flash DP3. Let the device boot, log in, set it up, etc.. I do NOT enable a pin/pattern yet.
2) Reboot to the bootloader & fastboot TWRP.
3) Flash Magisk 16.4.
4) Boot into the system & have root.
I've done this process damn near 10x going between dp2/8.1/dp3. There is no special trick to it.

OP didn't ask for recovery. OP asked how to get root. While you are 100% correct on how to get a static TWRP instance it is not relevant to the OP getting root.

Semantics. OP's post, and general boggle, is that they cannot obtain root on DP3. My response was directly related to the OPs post, and last like 10 comments across this sub. What OP had is presently irrelevant since the current goal is to obtain root. If the OP had an additional question as to how to obtain static TWRP I would have addressed that at a later date/time or your response would have been appropriate. Perhaps I took it for granted that the OP had an understanding on how to get static TWRP but, again, the point of this thread is getting root on DP3 which my response answers & yours does not.

No, flash Magisk unless you want to try a custom kernel. If so, flash it before Magisk, flash Magisk, then reboot.
After flashing magisk, the phone will not reboot, instead keeping me in a bootloop and sending me back into TWRP. Any ideas? Im happy to go back to stock if thatll make my phone work again!

Hey,
I was installing from P (9.0 DP3)
I installed TWRP first by flashing the image and then installing the zip file on to the phone.
Next i installed magisk, the installation all went through absolutely fine.
When i hit reboot, it goes onto the white splash screen, then brings up a small progress bar that goes across. This lasts for a minute or two, then dumps me back into TWRP.
I attempted all ways listed, and i end up Booting into Stock Recovery with a corrupt message forcing me to Power Off or Factory Reset or i got stuck at the Loading "G". Ended up restoring my June 8.1.0 Back up. Thanks for trying to help... I'll wait till there is more info on the subject...

A complete wipe when going to P is the best way to ensure there are no problems but what has worked for me is after installing dp3, rebooting to fastboot, booting to TWRP and doing a factory reset in TWRP. You will not lose data but will have to set your phone up as new. Then, boot back to fastboot and following the instructions as stated in the prior posts to gain root and recovery.

Which version of TWRP are you using (twrp-3.2.1-2 is the latest)? Are you seeing errors in the twrp gui while flashing? I'm not sure what you mean by "more info on it" because it's literally just flash the Magisk zip then reboot. The only things I can think of are that you're using an older version of twrp or the magisk zip is corrupt giving you a bad install.

Yes, always using the latest TWRP Official Builds. No errors in the script. What i mean by more info, is just that, when someone posts a thread, and i see it is working for users without issue, i will take the plunge if this doesnt work this time. And im using Magisk v16.4beta...
I think i am so use to Fastboot boot TWRP3212.img, then flashing the installer and rebooting to switch slots. I'm sure i am just not following something. Do i need to reboot after flashing Installer and before flashing Magisk, or NO reboot?

Don't reboot, TWRP installer installs to both slots.
Flash installer, hit back button, find magisk.zip, flash it.

What happens when you just do this:
Get DP flashed & configured. No passwords/patterns/security features.
fastboot boot TWRP3212.img
Flash your magisk 16.4 file.
Reboot.

Help Updating to December Security Patch

I'm running the stock rom on the November patch. I have TWRP installed with Magisk and the Kirisakura kernel. I've read and Googled for a solution and still can't get it to work. I have the latest ADB told installed but I am unable to push the update through. Can someone tell me what I'm missing? This used to be so much simpler lol. Thanks in advance.

From what I understand you can not do ADB in TWRP to install an update. What I did was download the factory images, remove -w from the flash all.bat. flashed the images and let the phone boot normally. Once I knew it was running I went to the bootloader and booted TWRP temporarily. Once that was up I flashed Magisk and then my kernel
I don't install TWRP anymore.

Adding to what hatdrc said, you want the full image, not OTA, and install from your PC in fastboot mode. If you are concerned about saving your data, remove the -w switch from flash-all.bat first using a file editor like notepad. Have the twrp.zip, kernel.zip and magisk.zip files already staged. I personally don't boot to system first (but you can), I "catch" the reboot after flashing completes with the volume down button to reboot to fastboot mode. Then fastboot boot twrp.img, and then install twrp, kernel and magisk zips all in one go using the "add more zips" button in twrp. Every month when you update, you'll lose twrp, kernel and magisk, so those have to be reflashed each time. You'll soon get used to it and can do the whole thing in about 5 minutes consistently. Just make sure to pre-stage the 3 zip files on the phone before you start. Best of luck.
I tried that but couldn't get it to work. I downloaded the ADB tools again just in case there was an issue with that. I'm going to run the flash-all script again to see if I can get it to work.

if whats suggested above doesnt work, you can make the OTA work....download the ota to your PC, boot to Android Recovery (not TWRP), apply the ota via ADB from the menu. Whenever I have "odd" issues applying the Full image, this always works for me. Obviously you need to re-root after.

Yes it does. TWRP replaces the stock recovery.
